Hello, soon to be trucker here. Was wondering if this was a good pay scale as a company driver
Hoping I can get some experienced eyes on this and opinions. A few things to consider, they’re paying for my CDL training, I only had to pay for my own CLP. Apparently the company works with 90% no touch freight and pay extra for any loads going to Canada and New York. Also they pay address to address.

With the way the economy is shaping out, a bit of both would be helpful lmao

Fair enough. I’m not an experienced driver which is why I can’t speak to the pay scale. However I was told that my CPM is quite high for a newbie driver. I make 45cpm flat rate no scale. They pay shortest distance so any detours, lot driving etc is cut out. I make about 1200-1400 every two weeks averaging 5-650 miles a day. But I pay for it with no personal time. Idm though, my wife is in the road with me so it’s way easier to manage it. But I get tons of miles and experience. Just finished my first solo trip on the northeast (downtown DC, Baltimore, Philly.) surprisingly I actually really enjoyed it. Not as bad as people make it sound but I didn’t go very far into either city except DC and I avoided NYC. Just find your balance, accept that this is what you’ll make (for now) and you can always come back to it later. I plane on getting a better job later as well in about three-five years. You have what I don’t though. Opportunity for raises. My company is small and family owned. Very few raises are given. They just raised it from 45 too 50 for the experienced drivers and that’s the first raise in 10 years.

If the company you work for hasn't given raises in 10yrs, then what the hell are they spending money on? Not employees that's for sure.
View on Reddit #23619937

Savagemocha@reddit

New trucks, upgrading facilities, training new drivers, also it’s just drivers not getting wages, paying for permits, tolls, etc.

Every company is doing those same things and providing raises though. That company sounds like a trap brother.

What bullshit is this? A scam inside of a scam like a scamsepetion , first off avoid cpm at all. But a steady rate cpm is the barest of minimums for this career field. Don't walk, RUN!

If I already had my CDL, I would definitely take this advice. But they’re paying me to get my CDL and at this point in time that’s not an opportunity I can pass up easily. But I’ll definitely keep this advice in mind when I go back on the job search afterwards
View on Reddit #23596731

Jolly_Macaroon8268@reddit

I was paid to get my CDL about 10 years ago, and I’ve only worked hourly rate CDL A jobs since, with 3 different companies… I’ve always made the decision to remain local. If I ever did decide to do OTR driving, I would laugh at anyone who offered a CPM pay scale like this. Keep looking… This is a joke!

Problem is that u took cdl course from them. This is known scam that shitty companies were doing since forever. U dont have a choice but yo accrpt those rates. Although for next 1-2 years u will be out of home for 5-6 weeks making 1000$.

Yep. I started off with Pepsi Bottling Company in Lubbock, TX. I only worked there for about 6 months when I decided to move back to my home town in East Texas, so I transferred to the Pepsi there to finish out my year. They had a very loose requirement that you work for them for 1 year if they helped you get your CDL. Not long after I moved back to ETX, Coca-Cola offered me a job paying more per hour for a bulk route (just had to unload pallets out of a 53’ dry van trailer into Walmarts and Sam’s, etc.). I’ve since moved on to local flatbed work…

I started at .58/mile with 100/tarp pay day 1. Lots of places seem like they have their entire business model based on desperate/stupid kids taking any job to get their foot in the door. Not a good business model; the SECOND dude gets 6mos/1yr experience accident free he is OUT, and many much sooner than that. Seems very short term gain/long term loss and I dont understand how thats sustainable, but then again Im not a degenerate psycho running these companies, so...

Just keep in mind the federal minimum wage. If you get dispatched for a 150 mile trip and it takes you all day to do it, which it could, you’re agreeing to work for less than minimum wage. You’re gonna starve to death.

The hell company is paying you that low? Schneider or Western Express? I would say try and find a minimum 0.50cpm per mile flat rate because that's real low.
View on Reddit #23597013

reaperslayer20@reddit (OP)

I’m going to work with Roehl. I’m trying to find a company that will pay me to get my CDL training being that I only have my CLP at the moment
View on Reddit #23597284

SirArchDuke@reddit

Personally I would still look into trying to find something that's a minimum of .50, there scale seems to really benefit small/medium size runs especially if 350+ miles is at .45 - .43. A fluctuating scale instead of a flat rate is kinda odd as well. I wish you luck though man, going with these guys or no.
View on Reddit #23597506

reaperslayer20@reddit (OP)

They call it a “Dynamic Pay Plan” Thinking about it, it could have its pros, also its cons. A pro could be if I drive out to another state 200 miles away from my current position rate could be 0.45cpm but if I start working within that state with multiple loads it’d be 1.06 dpm. 200 x 0.45cpm = $90 and let’s say I run 5 loads in state at 37 miles between each other 37 x 5 = 185, 185 x 1.06 dpm = 196.10 A hopeful scenario I know, but a scenario.
View on Reddit #23599506

Sea-Radish3964@reddit

You'll rarely see those short loads. Most of those short runs get lumped in with another longer run so they can pay you less. I was here back in 2021 and was making a flat .67cpm and the checks were pretty damn good, ended up leaving for local work that didn't work out and came back to this dynamic pay crap and my checks I shit you not are half off I'm lucky of what they used to be the first time I was here. Like I was averaging $13-1400 take home before with occasional $15-1600 checks and now it's more like $6-900. My advice is get your time in and find better. They truly are a good starter company but not much beyond that anymore tbh.

View on Reddit #23600836

2017Fatbob@reddit

All miles should pay the same, loaded or empty. Your responsibility doesn't change with any of the miles driven.
View on Reddit #23595954

youngmoney2299@reddit

Why should a 50 mile load with the same load/unload time which is unpaid be the same as a 500 mile load? You should get paid more for shorter loads to offset the unpaid time of getting loaded/unloaded
View on Reddit #23600336

2017Fatbob@reddit

You should get paid a fixed amount for a stop/unload and a fixed amount for the miles driven. This scalable pay leaves a LOT of room to get scammed, short changed, or other calamity. Your paystub is going to be impossible to check for errors.
View on Reddit #23600729

Sir_Uncle_Bill@reddit

I'd tell them if they can put in writing that I'd get 5-6 loads a day under 75 miles per load then deal. If not then you need to look elsewhere. This is a horrible deal
View on Reddit #23600319

youngmoney2299@reddit

Yes thats pretty good considering they’re paying for your cdl. If you get it yourself not only will it costs thousands of dollars, but many companies won’t hire you and the ones that do will have similar pay to this. You should be netting at least $1000 a week with that pay scale.
View on Reddit #23600252

_FearMose_@reddit

I had the same mentality as you 3 years ago. Company was willing to pay for my CDL and I thought how bad could it be? Well, it was bad. Take out a loan or check out other companies. Theres plenty out there that will pay for your CDL
View on Reddit #23597241

reaperslayer20@reddit (OP)

Damn, how bad was it? If you don’t mind me asking. I’ve been with some shit companies before in other jobs, so I’m trying to rank it on my bullshit job scale
View on Reddit #23597395

_FearMose_@reddit

There were so many issues at that company. Wait times to get a hold of anyone on the phone could range 45 mins to 3hrs. Long wait times for load assignments. One time I sat for 4 days waiting on a beef load just for the shipper to cancel the load. I had to fight tooth and nail for every single layover/detention pay. At one point they owed me $600 in just layover/detention. They claimed I would make $60,000 my first year easily. I made it 5 months and could no longer financially afford just to work for them. I wont even go into all the disrespect and nonsense I dealt with because the only thing I cared about was the money. As long as they paid me, they could call me a fucking clown for all I cared. I was literally making more money as a pizza delivery driver working for $3.75 + tips AND I was in my own bed every night After those 5 months I applied to 3 different jobs. Cried myself to sleep and when I woke up I had 2 offer letters from 2/3 I applied for. I quit the next day and never looked back. Fuck Stevens Transport
View on Reddit #23598142

reaperslayer20@reddit (OP)

Jeezus, I’ve never heard of that company but fuck Steven’s Transport 🖕🏾that experience sounds terrible. I’m honestly only using this job to get my credit back together and eventually get one of my business ideas off the ground. It’ll be the highest paid job ive ever had which sucks to say cause I’ve been working since I was 16 and I’m 22 now. Hopefully my tenure doesn’t end up like your experience. And I hope your current company is taking good care of you.

I started National refer . And was making 54 cpm I believe then switched to Kraft Northeast Regional and went down to .53 but you ran so hard on that fleet that it was a pay raise.
View on Reddit #23599663

reaperslayer20@reddit (OP)

That’s probably why, they’re going to put me on the national dry van fleet. I heard their fleets get paid differently
View on Reddit #23599903

JusgementBear@reddit

Bro what the actual fuck, I hope they run more than my friend in National refer, even at .56 cpm with a wife and child on medical insurance through roehl and after taxes I was making 700 on average (sometimes more) a week. The drivers in Roehl are all blue falcons who lookout for themselves and leave shitty trailers that force you to not make money

There’s usually state grants that will cover your schooling. You don’t have to go company sponsored unless you don’t mind being tied down for at least a year.

Most higher paying CDL jobs in my area want at least a year of experience. I’ve seen companies offer 0.32 - 0.35cpm flat rate for no experience at the low end.
