This is one that came up randomly on my shuffle the other day, and I was blown away by it. I'm shocked that it didn't become a big hit. It's got all the ingredients for it - especially that absolutely massive chorus. I'd encourage everyone to give it a listen.

One of my favourite bands in the world is Augie March, from Melbourne. Really melancholy indie with beautiful harmonies, rich instrument arrangements and lovely archaic lyrics. The problem with threads like these is - one person says 'I Like the song 'Sadie' by 'Newsom'' - and you have no idea whether its 'Heavy Metal' or 'Alt. Harp Music' ... unless you're a fan already, and - if you're a fan already - then you probably already know if it's a banger or a dud. and, of course, a large sub like AskUK is going to attract people who love music from a hell of a lot of different genres and tastes. so, yeah, I LOVE the song, 'Sadie', by Newsom... and I can guarantee that a hell of a lot of people have never heard of it... and I can guarantee a hell of a lot of the people who are going to look at this thread will hate it

I like grunge and most people have not heard of most songs outside of some of the more popular Nirvana/Pearl Jam songs. Maybe by Alice in Chains is from the post Layne Staley era but has also been my most played song on Spotify every year since the album came out. People love to dismiss Hole because of Courtney Love but Jennifer's Body shows why Hole deserve more recognition. Finally, Screaming Trees have loads but if I had to pick one (which is a struggle) then Shadow of the Season is infectious.

It's actually incredibly uplifting and really resonated with me while I was going through the same thing. U Love U by Subcircus. They were a pretty good post brit-pop band that felt like they were just on the cusp of making it, but just fell short. They were around at the same time Placebo broke through, and had a similar vibe. They supported some pretty big bands in the late '90s and had a couple of singles out, but I don't think they made the top 40.

My one from way, way back is Stupid Guy by The Paranoids, a track that made airplay but wasn't otherwise successful. I desperately wanted to buy the single but nowhere had it in stock. Funny thing is, I recently found it on YouTube and it doesn't hit as well now – must have been of its time – but it's still a great “wall of sound” effort. Much more recently, a couple of tracks by Swedish trio Dirty Loops. Next To You and Follow the Light are instantly accessible pop songs but the musicianship is stratospheric. Henrik Linder does things on the bass that should be illegal for mere mortals, but all three are shockingly talented.

It hit top 10 album charts. It also debuted at number two on the UK's Official Record Store Chart, which consists of the UK's biggest albums of the week sold through 100 UK independent record shops, based on sales of CDs, vinyl and other formats The whole album has had an average of 40k streams a day. ( not including just individual songs from it )
