I think it looks alright. I don't really take issue with any of Subarus design at the moment except for the WRX. Front is fine, rear is bad.
I think the Subaru cladding is at least passable due to them having the outdoorsy/ruggedness associated with the brand.
It made me unreasonably mad the first time I saw the rear end of the new WRX. Why in the motherfuck would Subaru redesign their most popular car to have fuckin Honda civic taillights from like 10 yrs ago? Had a similar reaction back when the Dodge Durango had the same taillights as the caravan.
Agreed. Subarus look decent these days, but the rear of the WRX is meh. What really destroys it for me is the wheel well arches. If they just made them round it’d be *soooooo* much better.
If I got a WRX again, I'd have to paint the plastic cladding I think. If you haven't seen pictures you should definitely look it up. They look 100% better body color painted.
I agree it looks better but the back end of the VB just is just sad. The back end of the VA wasn't great but man the VB is bad. I also have mixed feelings on the new VA hood scoop like the sleek low profile is interesting and all but it's a WRX that thing should be sticking out the hood and screaming this was my dream car as a teenage boy. Like a good old blob eye.
Plastic cladding isn’t bad on the Crosstrek, although it’s on far too many cars that don’t need it. However, this new one’s cladding (and Subaru’s new design language in general) has far too many angles and lines that clutter up the design and don’t flow.
Yeahhh... Honestly, I'm a BMW fan and I agree it's a bit disappointing. The F80 gen M3, M4 and M2 comp were peak BMW design. I've gotten over the G80 M3 and like them okay now but the XM, iX, i7 and new M2 are all still pretty gross to me.

I actually quite like the look of the Alltrack, which is a similar genre of car (although closer to the Outback) and came with a 6MT. In fact, I own one! Sadly they are no longer produced.
There are lots of good-looking cars on the road today. Hyundai has some real stunners in its lineup, VW tends to do a good job, the new Prius is hella sexy, and Mazda's offerings are all very pretty even if they do all look kinda the same. I think Volvo and Hinda have some great stuff these days, too. Lots of great cars out there, design wise.
There are no Subarus that I think are remotely attractive, though. Not that they're bad cars—before my Alltrack I had an Outback, my sister drives her family around in an Ascent, and her husband rocks a Forester. All solid cars, from a practical standpoint. I just think they've lost their way in terms of design, not that that's ever really been Subaru's strong suit.
Not hating your opinion just explaining the marketing reason. That's a wilderness edition. It's subaru off-roading trim and suspension package, that cladding is to help protect the body from rusting. That is a very common problem with off-road vehicles is paint easily gets damaged especially at the bottom. If you live in the sault belt for example you notice cars with rust around the bottom and fenders. So for people who want that outlander lifestyle it might look more appealing because they can just buy the car and go. And for a off-road vehicles the Crosstrek (XV) wilderness edition msrp is about 33k today's economy isn't a bad entry point. But don't expect to do any hardcore rock crawling unless you do some serious suspension modifications
I'm aware of what plastic body cladding is for. In my opinion, it's like covering an expensive leather wallet with duct tape in order to protect the finish. Like, OK, technically it works but now it's ugly from the very beginning instead of after several years of abuse. In order to save it, you ruined it.
Also, like you say, Subaru doesn't make off-roaders. If anything they make normal cars that are a bit more capable in inclement weather than most, although their trick of putting AWD in everything is a lot less special now than it was in the 90s.
It is perhaps the substanceless-ness of Subaru's recent cladding fetish that annoys me the most. It's pure posturing, with nothing to back it up. They've got more plastic and more aggressive plastic than a goddamn Raptor, in what is really just a normal-ass hatchback with a slight lift. Even if I liked it aesthetically, the lack of authenticity is annoying.
I feel as though this kind of marketing insults my intelligence. I'll admit though, it seems to work very well. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions there.

Nah. It looped so far into ugly category that it actually became kind of awesome. Saw one in person for the first time yesterday, actually kind of cool looking.
All of the SUV’s, no matter the brand, are the same basic body shape. They change the windows and some minor things to make it look like their brand. They are all very bland and boring.
Believe it or not this applies to sedans and even pickup trucks. Not counting the drivetrains, it's all the same shit under the badging. Very uninspiring lol

I personally would love it if we went with less painted areas like this. Once California and climate activist ruined car paint for everyone and the water-based crap they all use now chips when you look at it wrong, areas of the car that are most prone to road debris should be a more durable material. Especially since we live in a world of higher-riding trucks, SUVs and open truck beds constantly causing rocks and random crap to fly around even if you never take your car up a mountain or off-road.
No low range gearing, little articulation, and the low point of the vehicle being the rockers makes a pretty poor off-roader.
These things are great at keeping you on the road but not great at taking you off of it. Unless your idea of off-roading is graded fire roads.
Depends on how you want to define off-road. The kind of off-road that a Crosstrek is intended for won't be hampered by a CVT. If you're trying to keep up with your rock crawling Jeep buddies then yeah, the CVT will give up by programming design before it can even overheat.
I'd imagine he meant all cars, not just the crosstrek since he said. "The manual transmission is done," not "The crosstrek doesnt have a manual option anymore."
I used to be a big Subaru fan, but I've never thought they were particularly good looking. I've always believed that cars should be beautiful or ugly, but NEVER boring.
More specifically they look like shit. They are still reliable as hell. Also I feel like everyone is forgetting this is the same company that came up with the Baja? (I personally think the Baja is great, but it is pretty obviously butt ugly).
I’d be down for the wilderness edition if they ditched all the plastic fenders and orange decals / badging. I imagine a lot of people will black out all the orange as one of their first mods.

I've destroyed multiple fenders off-roading my Gladiator and I'm happy mine are unpainted because it means replacements are not too insanely expensive. Though how much that'll matter on something that's more of a dirt road cruiser and less trail rig... Who knows. But it's at least functional in theory.
Honestly it's grown on me. The plastic cladding serves a very important purpose: corrosion protection. The taillights....yeah still not huge on. But could be worse

Then it rusts out invisibly, and you finally find out when suddenly it won't pass inspection.

It's not a looker, but at least it is functional. You could actually take this thing on some fairly serious offroad tracks and do alright, vs. the typical CUV which are essentially just bloated family sedans.
See, the problem is that it isn’t about function. In that case, it wouldn’t have all those damn angles and edges on the cladding, and it would be normal like the Crosstrek and Outback of the past.
Safety is always overtaking style by a larger and larger margin as mandated standards become ever higher. Just look at the way the edges of the cars made today look different than in the 60s-90s.
Now the edges are rounded, smoothed, they’re a bit higher up. Lots of jelly bean shaped cars now. They’ll jazz them up as much as possible with tough looking cladding like on this Subaru.
They have been around for a while. But there is definitely a new kind of ugly, it seems to be the target segment for EVs for some reason. It's not a crossover, it's just a sexless tankass sedan. I think it all stems from the Tesla Model 3 and for some reason no car manufacturer can risk entering the electric market without competing for the exact same segment.
I fucking love it. The side rearview mirrors on Mazdas? Those things are ugly and the fucking suck. They have 30% the visibility as most cars because of the stupid teardrop shape.
It’s designed for off-road capabilities with the every day comfort of a standard crossover. It’s part of the Subaru wilderness lineup. The forester & outback versions look nearly the same. The Crosstrek just offers more colour options.
There's been ugly cars for a loooong time now. This looks a lot better than the old Subaru Baja, now those are ugly. Also the Hyundai Aztecs and old Hyundai Sante fes come to mind.
I think this is better than EVERY suv on the road looking exactly the same. The crosstrek is ugly but at least its somewhat unique. Toyota, audi, acura, honda, chevy, Ford, nissan, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, BMW they all make the same damn suv and there's even a few I felt too lazy to list

I think they look fine and are loaded with features that hadn’t been even thought about 30 years ago. Actually the last good looking cars were in the 1920’s and ‘30’s .
Car makers traded distinguishable shapes and unique designs for crossover hell. hatchbacks, sedans and wagons are a thing of the past almost every single new vehicle is a brick.
20 years from now this will come around and be cool. OG Honda Elements, Pontiac Aztecs (mainly for BB reference), Old school Subaru Bajas with those high silver panels. It all comes around.
Yeah I have to agree with the OP here. New Subarus are butt ugly. I saw an Outback today with the hideous orange plastic trim pieces. It’s like they’ve run out of styling ideas.
What I hate about Subaru is they reuse all the designs for every car. Ever seen an Outback and a legacy next to each other? Same head/tail lights, same interior designs. There’s no creativity whatsoever. The Impreza and crosstrek are the exact same car with different body styles. I do like the commercials with the dogs tho

Depends on where you look. Porsche, Hyundai, and Lexus lineups are the best they've ever looked imo. Plus Rivian is killing it with their retro-future designs

I can get behind this design, my gripe is with honda hyundai. My two favorite companies are starting to get either lazy af in the design phase (honda), or letting the entire design team get high on pcp and then letting them free (hyundai).

I put it at about 2014 was the start of the decline, but it didn’t get too bad until 2018. Now even the outliers are starting to look terrible like Honda. I really liked the previous generation Civic, Accord, Etc. But this new thing they have going on is one of the worst out there.

The reason it looks like this is cause it's intended to go off road. If the driver is going somewhere that has rocks or anything rough on the side then the plastic will take the brunt of the impact instead of the body work. It is kind of odd you chose this as your example when there cars that are meant to look good look like pure ass such as the Tesla cybertruck that looks like a vehicle that hasn't loaded into a game correctly

I cannot emphasize enough how much I prefer classic cars over modern. They almost all had such unique and great looks. It’s wasn’t all about fitting into the same safe looks as every other brand (excluding sport cars but even some of those are becoming lamer these days). Cars developed unique and established vibes and styles for the brand. They had personality and class. Attention to detail put into not just the mechanical features, but into appearances. Fine details like silver detailings on the outside and wooden paneling in certain parts inside. Cars had unique looks thanks to brands often trying new things.
These days, innovation seems less common and even when it is seen, often quite safe. People play it safe. Not just in cars but in almost anything. The iPhone is a prime example. Minimal changes but constantly “new” versions released, more and more expensive each time.
I hate wondows being so thin, especially at the back. It feels like they want everything to feel like a coupé or something. It feels sonfresh when ai see an older csr with more glass.
The world is continuously changing as it did back then. Who knows the future right?

1990s: we have both black plastic and body coloured panels
2000s: we’ve embraced modern life, body colour is the standard
2010s: you know what would look great? Black bits sprinkled around
2020s: black grills and mirror caps aren’t enough, you can have half of your car covered in shitty black sticky out bits with comedy ride height to boot
Subaru is out of control with the cladding. Used to be a massive Subaru fan, but they’ve totally lost the plot. The seemingly random notched out sections of the cladding is so weird. The mid 00s were peak Subaru in the US.
The wilderness trims keep a lot of unpainted parts because it’s supposed to be for off road. It’s not really that capable off road, but it’s not a bad idea to have less parts that can get scratched if you are going to take it off road. I’m not calling it pretty, but I believe that is the justification for all of the unpainted parts.
I’m talking about the sections where they have removed cladding. The section between the rear fender and the rear door lower. Same with the front door and the front fender but they have the cladding nearly to the hood line. Why the gap in cladding down low and the excessive cladding up high?
100% agree. A lot of people are getting the black plastic bumpers paint matched on the 2022+ WRX, it looks a lot better with the body colour instead of black.
I need to see some ID’s on these Subaru designers….think we may have found some of the design team for the Pontiac Aztek trying to get back in the industry to finish their unholy mission…..death by bulky plastic body decor.

Some Wilderness edition Outbacks look good. Not that one. My local dealer has a red one like that on the lot. It’s listed several thousand dollars cheaper than the other similarly equipped Outbacks. The yellow stuff is weird.

I'm going to be that guy. I like these plastic clad designs. My biggest complaint about this particular car is the engine. Subaru really needs to come up with a new engine solution. Every other car maker is slapping a turbo on their engines and still making CAFE averages. Subaru has pissed off enough of their enthusiast base at this point, I don't think going to a transverse 4 will matter at this point.

SUVs/Crossovers generally dont look good. Name me a manufacturer who produces better looking SUVs than its sedan/hatchback counter parts. i personally cant think of any
The main issue is that environmental and crash safety regulations have really pushed automakers to build larger, heavier vehicles. Platform sharing and having to check a lot of regulatory boxes mean that cars are converging on the CUV blob shape. It's a fundamentally unattractive design and it's difficult to put sufficient lipstick on a pig. If the US moved to a tailpipe emissions system like Europe cars would likely become more attractive.

The main issue is that a lot of these newer vehicles are overdesigned.
Lines are a dime a dozen on these cars and tend to cross over often enough that the outsides look busy. The inside of modern cars have way too much electronics, gadgets, buttons, overdesigned panels and dashes that you feel overwhelmed.
I really like the how the Outback Wilderness looks, this one looks a little squished, but i wouldn’t call it ugly. I think the biggest problem is that in the US we have all of these crossovers which are mostly ugly. I wish we could get nice looking estates/wagons like the European get.
Have you driven one? A lot of people wanted to lift their Crosstrek for light off road duty and subaru has answered the call with an off the shelf option. It might be ugly but it isn't without soul, commitment, or purpose. In fact it might be too purpose built.
Funny you say they because we took a crosstrek to a hunting lease where "only 4x4 trucks would make it" and effortlessly waded through inches of Florida muck on all seasons. To each their own.
That's a good way to put it. So fugly! I wish they would stop shitting out so many of these SUVs. Give us sedans and wagons again. Make more warm and hot hatches again.
The worst part about these shit plastic panels is they can still scratch and you can't wipe it out. you're either going to make it look slightly better or buff through any texture on the piece making it more obvious.
