Is there a job where you don't have to be quick?

I've tried warehouse, factory and shelf restocking, shop assistant and stock counter but I'm not cut out for any of it. Got a new job I started last month cleaning the passenger area of planes but I'm not sure I'm gonna stay long cos I'm not as quick as the others and I'm nearly always the last one to finish and on this other team I keep being told to speed up and I'm like I'm trying 😭 so I'm probably either gonna leave by myself (planning on it before the summer as I definitely probably won't be able to keep up as the number of planes is gonna double) or be sacked. The only job I'm alright at is agency jobs where I just clean schools but it wasn't paying enough to keep on top of bills and debt payments 😓 Honestly don't feel like I'm cut out for any job. 😓

I was the same when working on farms, I was always told I wasn’t fast enough at cutting the leaks or whatever. You just haven’t found your sweet spot yet. The fact that you posted this topic tells me a lot about you. You’re obviously conscientious enough to care, and for an employer that is highly sort after. As others have said, speed comes from practise. Perhaps you could work on your own perception of yourself. You are as good if not better than others. Stick at the job. Dont give up just because you aren’t #1 straight out of the gates. It’s good that you want to strive for perfection, but no-one ever starts out perfect. It takes persistence and many many failures. You only need to succeed once. If I look back at my career I have failed more times than I can remember. Now I earn a good salary and I am neither quick nor particularly intelligent. I just have a good attitude, I am always interested, I befriend people and I always bring something no-one else brings - no matter how small. Do those things, keep being you and you’ll get there. Most importantly, don’t give up based on what you think of yourself. Good luck ❤️

Thanks :) To be honest this job is alright and the money is like miles more than I got from agency and the people are nice, it's just I don't think I can keep up with them. It's only been 12 shifts (4 on 4 off) so it hasn't been long. The first group I'm in that I prefer to be in (as far as I know) don't mind me being a bit slow, sometimes I can keep up with them, it's just the other group. And everything I hear about the summer doesn't fill me with confidence. I keep thinking I should do what my brother has done and start a car cleaning side job cos I like cars but then I doubt myself again.

Have you identified the reason why you're alot slower than the others? To be honest it doesn't sound like a hard job just manual. Are you struggling to keep up because of fitness? Are you a perfectionist when it needs to be cleaned to a minimum level? Why are you slower.

It's probably just practise. During COVID I worked in a factory and warehouse doing all kinds of different roles and at first I could barely keep up but then after a while you just get good at it. The most egregious example was stacking boxes on pallets as they come off a conveyor. The company made many different products and they boxes were stacked in many different ways so just as you got the hang of one pallet it would be changed but after a few weeks it was a doddle. When I started I was sweating my tits off just trying to do one and having to be helped now and again. After a few weeks I could easily keep up with my line and after 6 months I could look after two lines, the new girl next to me, talk to my mates and do other bits and bobs. It was just purely practice, everyone is the same. Lots of these repetitive type jobs are the same. You've just got to stick at it. Good employers will expect you to be slow at first, while shitty employers don't give you any leeway. It sounds like they are just leaving before they have chance to improve at all these roles.

Yea on jet2 planes we gotta organise the magazines in a certain order whereas on other planes we just put the safety card at the front. Everyone else does that quickly and is already several rows down by the time I've done a few. On the planes I just put the safety card at the front I'm usually good at keeping up but still behind them. I also pick up a lot of rubbish like sweet wrappers off the floor that might get stuck in the vacuum whereas the others that I noticed yesterday just leave it on the floor and the person doing the vacuuming picks them up. It pays compared to my agency job which I got £180 a week and this job I'm getting around £1,700 a month and live with my parents.

You could start the car cleaning business on the side. For example only do it one day a week on a day off so you get an idea of how long it takes, how many customers are interested, and how much money you could make before fully committing to making it your main income.

The car cleaning is a great idea - you can work at your own pace which is what you’re probably thinking. And in time you’ll improve/speed up. What do your colleagues say when you ask for tips to improve? Best way to approach it is to just forget about it. Head down and don’t best. Give yourself a target and measure yourself to that target. So “I want to drop 30 seconds per bathroom cleaned per week”. But mostly I reckon it’s about not over-thinking it. Get your head down. Once it becomes muscle memory you’ll be doing it without even noticing and that’s when you can kick the ass if it and speed up. Also, we started a business for my wife after she had had our kids. My advice is just do it. It takes time to get customers so it’s nice and slow. But the secret is to start it. Right now. Spend your free time creating a basic website and maybe knock on some doors or print yourself some flyers. It only takes one to say yes and hey presto you have a company! My wife now brings in £50k just doing a similar job to cleaning cars. It’s her business and she loves it. Her secret is: not being the best or fastest, but she’s the loveliest! Her customers are now all friends. Some even paid her through the pandemic despite the fact she could do work for them! They pay her more for the chat at the door than the job she does. I learned a lot from her about how to treat people. If you are free today go and order the book “How to win friends and influence people” (Dale Carnegie) it’ll teach you more about cleaning bathrooms than you ever thought possible! Go on, today’s your day! The second secret is to just start it. No matter how small, do something that gets you closer to your car cleaning idea each day. A month from now I want a reply telling me how well you’re doing 😉

I spent many years in civil service. I had many tearful moments where the pressure to get everything out the door. One was memorable as I just didn’t have time to breakdown. I just had to do it. Since then I have worked for charities and private companies. Including one where I was a delivery driver and each drop had to be within a 5 minute period. I just laughed at that as I could only go as fast as traffic and laws would allow. I have not felt the same pressure as I did in the civil service.

Ugg, charities are so inefficient that even if you HAD a time pressure, something else in the charity would block it anyway. If you can get a job at a charity, go for it, it's likely going to be the least stressful job you will ever have.

If charities didn't have paid employees they wouldn't be able to function, and certainly wouldn't be able to do all the good would they do. Volunteers are great in certain roles but you need professionally skilled people in many roles and you aren't going to find all of those skills offered for free. Most people need income to live on.

Working for a charity was one of the most stressful jobs that I ever did. Tbf the stress came from the boss who wanted me to do 2 peoples jobs. It got to the point where I wasn’t taking breaks or lunches cause there was that much to do and I was having sleepless nights. I left after 3 months and they wondered why they had such a high staff turnover. That boss was a right cow

My experience in the civil service/public sector is that they make their own stress by just wildly, insanely nonsensical processes. Private sector can be bad but nothing like I’ve seen in councils and DWP.

Part of the problem is that public sector is denigrated so much, and told they're wasteful and lazy soooo much, that they spend 2x as much time following "process" and "evidence" for "accountability." So this is very much a vicious cycle. People demonise the public sector -> So the public sector implements a load of bureaucracy so they can be held accountable -> That bureaucracy is wasteful and expensive -> New people enter the service, see how shit and wasteful it is, and then go out and tell everyone -> Rinse and repeat.

It does not help that the application process is so long and things like the competencies you have to provide evidence for catch lots of good candidates out. My cousin works for the civil service and says the application process seems to do a goo job of filtering out the better candidates.

Part of the problem is people ending up in positions entirely through learning how the process works at just that one place. One department decided should all really have professional qualifications to at least the minimum level you would need for private. In came the level 4 profession specific apprenticeships. People struggled, a lot. Basic concepts were entirely new information to people who were in advanced conditions. Someone with title along the line of senior strategic whatever lead failed the first exam and immediately left to go somewhere else. They put the job up and it now required a level 6 which is mostly takes 5 years but can be done in 3. Tho requires 3 years of working experience at the end regardless.

Level 4 was easy enough, I actually was made redundant just before the last exam so was completed in 12 months since I passed everything. There's usually a load of YouTube videos on whatever that's at least as good as the teaching and learning stuff with a clear financial reward was much easier than not. Especially when working in the area. Chances are most with a level 4 wouldn't apply. It's likely lower than they can get elsewhere and you can do inwork apprenticeships and keep your salary, I did. I can get well over 40k with a level 4, I'm not dropping to NMW to get a level 5. So it will come down to other skills, qualifications and experience you have v other people. My second requalification now lol so that works nicely for me as they all dovetail. Also apprenticeships require a lot of extra work v a course I could just self fund and job skip for way more than the difference.

I worked in the civil service for a year (nuclear) and sadly all of the tropes were true in my experience. Yes processes are slow but they are created by people and can be changed/updated. Nobody in a position of power cares enough to actually make a change and everyone seemed happy to use poor processes as a crutch for poor performance. What I saw was every manager calling for "more resource" at every opportunity and not spending time challenging how things are done. Managers tended to be lifers unaware of how much the outside world has moved on in working practices and technology. Their underlings were happy for a cushy position that was actually very well paid (in nuclear at least). Left after a year to rejoin the private sector as I couldn't face 30+ years being assimilated into mediocrity.

Yes, I was working twelve hour days and not having any time to eat or go to the toilet when I was in the CS. It was completely manic. I'd write whole reports in a single day and then immediately start on the next one, all while juggling constant meetings and changing Government priorities. You'd spend all day on a report, only to have the Minister change their mind over night and the work you'd done to be useless. It was completely impossible to do my job and have a happy family life, so I left.

Particularly in the private sector. You may find more joy in the public sector where time CAN be less important. Equally self employed could work where you quote on jobs not time. Public sector outcomes are slow for the same reason conveyancing is - unrealistic workloads for the number of staff. Nothing to do with them as individuals being on easy street. If you care about your work at all, an ever growing stack of work to do is stressful. In my experience, much more stressful than having a queue in a shop.

My experiences working alongside and in the public sector for decades could not be any different. Processes are antiquated yes, but 80% of the reason for that is because there are people working in higher up roles that have been there for 30 years and they have absolutely no idea how the world has moved on since they started becoming complacent. They constantly call for more headcount where a simple operational review would be way better. When they don't get those people they simply throw their hands up and "give up". The amount of "well it's not my money" from public sector procurement, especially NHS is also disgusting. They're just throwing money away unnecessarily.

Was involved with adult social care procurement, fucking hell is it expensive. People get that care homes are expensive, well sort of as they know they are but it still feels like a scam somehow. Now its completely ruining councils budgets and people blame the councils. Can't speak for NHS as I'm barely adjacent but looking after people in general is expensive. Look at nursery costs, people quit jobs to look after their kids themselves all over the place now while the funded bit waits to kick in. Also lots of care work is done by women, so they lose some career progression while the caring industry also loses a worker for at least a few years. Same for children's services, getting kids to school, anyone with complex needs etc. Even prison is expensive to keep someone in for a year. Then the NHS is dealing with the sick ones from any of these populations. Plus its far more urgent by nature and i imagine requires high spec everything so I'd expect the costs to be high. Can you give any as vague as you like examples? Can see how a high cost, high risk if it goes wrong thing could mean people just want it solved and preferably with a risk transfer to someone else if its wrong. Really all this shit should be funded centrally and far more than it is.

It seems like front line suffers while back end is completely overlooked from a budgeting perspective. Simple examples that I've seen personally were a hospital's cleaning department wrote off and threw away around 30k worth of mop heads and microfiber cloths to ensure that they had space to place a large order so that they could keep their budget and not have it questioned the next financial year. I've had hospitals pay for expedited shipping on really inexpensive and unimportant parts because they just can and they'd "rather have it here now, it's not my money anyway". I know of equipment sabotage in order to get replacements just because the equipment is old, despite it working perfectly. We're talking £30 shipping on £5 parts which are going to be spares, not even immediately required. Waste, overstocking, expiration dates passing... It goes on. This is just what I've seen in 10 hospitals. If this is widespread, which I don't see why it wouldn't be, we're talking extraordinary amounts of misused funds.

These random examples are really not a reason to condemn any civil service manager as incompetent. If you know a way to get into that 30 years in dinosaur role where your poor performance is not challenged without being also 30 years in, I’d love to hear it. They progressed at a time when things worked differently. I certainly have encountered a few but I’d never have been allowed away with that level of performance when new into my roles.

I don't agree. I know loads of people I'd consider incapable of working in a private corporate environment who are comfortably moving up the ranks in public sector roles. This is my direct experience working in both for a reasonable amount of time. I also know of many incredibly capable individuals who are at the end of their tethers in public service roles being hamstrung continuously by inept management and feeling powerless to change things. They'd absolutely fly in the private sector.

Fair enough I’ve been in and out a couple of times as well and not had this experience. There is quite a bit of bureaucracy no doubt about it and the pace of movement can be infuriating. I’m in a specialist profession where you get a lot of external hires and not many career CS so maybe the culture is different but top of my list of worst managers I’ve encountered would all be private sector. If you talk a good talk, you can work your way up anywhere because all it takes to be appointed to a new role is a strong interview. You can move on when shit starts catching up with you - and probably move up again while you’re at it!

My friend works in the NHS and they're constantly downsizing her department. She's in a white collar job on 60k but regularly works 80 hour weeks. I was in teaching, same shit. Workload has increased at a steady clip since the 2000s, but headcount is frozen or falling. I'm in another public sector field now. There's definitely not an excess of staff. There is definitely a problem with boomers, but it's usually a problem of them hoarding knowledge, it not getting passed on, and then they retire, or move to the private sector for better pay because the public sector pay these days is an absolute fucking **joke**. I'm not saying the public sector doesn't have issues, but I think a big part of it failure to treat people like adults and give them the resources they need in the really important areas, while allowing waste and stupidity in other areas as outlined by others. But listening to my friends I can't say the private sector is necessarily so much better. Elon Musk anyone? Also my brother works in a mobile phone company, in corporate, and the stuff you outline is happening all over it, if not worse.

Can also just be poor management and systems. Friend is a junior data scientist for the nhs, they fired his line manager a couple weeks in and 4 months later he still has a temporary line manager who contacts him once in a blue moon. He works fully remote and rarely gets given stuff to do. I dont think you would see stuff like this in the private sector.

It's like rolling a ball the length of a football pitch, sure you give it a push and can get to the end quite quickly with 1. Now try doing it with 200 that need to all end up in the same order on the end line and they have names not numbers plus here's this chart of the way points to hit so it must follow this path on the field and sometimes it will deflate and need pumping up by hand to get moving as they all have leaks.

People expect me to drop everything to deal with a silly question “what day do the bins go out?” Followed by a phone call because you’ve not responded quickly enough. (GO TO YOUR AGENT, YOU PAY THEM £2000 MORE THAN ME FOR A QUARTER OF THE WORK). Then you’re dealing with “conveyancing factories” where 95% of the staff aren’t qualified nor know anything about conveyancing in general.

I had a car accident 2.5 years ago. Used the solicitors through my insurance. It’s only a fender bender. My appointed solicitor has left 3 times. Each time I had to contact them to be told & that they would appoint me someone new… Now all my emails etc… Have been lost & I have to start again?!! FFS!

Have you tried contacting the Insurance Ombudsman? Make sure you contact your insurance company first, just in case that prompts them to kick the solicitor up the butt, but I would definitely escalate this.

Any entry level office job, I went from high volume bartending to being involved as inventory controller and purchasing assistant in an office before retraining into SWE. My office role in inventory was excruciatingly slow and boring, but also incredibly easy so if you fit in with your team it’s a bit of a laugh as you talk a lot. Marketing was also incredibly slow but they did have deadlines that they used to get stressed about, not sure why because they worked at an absolute snail’s pace and they only had two launches a year 6 month apart same time every year. They also spent more time talking about box sets and movies than anything else. The only busy person on our side of office (inventory & marketing) was the graphics designer, albeit he started as a part time marketing assistant and the company spent tens of thousands on courses to get him into graphics design so I suppose they were entitled to their pound of flesh.

Night audit in a low capacity hotel (100-200 rooms). Your job is to essentially push a button at 2am and deal with any complaints etc. It's the least stressful job you'll ever have but comes with the caveat of doing night work. It’s more that people only want to pay a certain amount for conveyancing, in an already expensive process. Conveyancing costs have to be “low” which means workload has to be high, unfortunately. It’s the same across the board. I’ve worked in large conveyancing firms known as “conveyer belt conveyancing” and I’ve worked in smaller firms and it’s the same all over. You might think increasing prices would mean less work but roughly the same fees coming in, but you just end up with no work when the costs get too high. The whole market of conveyancing is competing with everyone else and it gets to a race to the bottom for fees while keeping case loads high to earn decent money. its one of the reasons i left the industry.

I worked for HTB South which stuck to SLAs really well. We only had bad hold times in the peak of covid. My understanding is HTB Midlands and HTB North were awful for that stuff. Some people would ring us because they couldn’t get through, but we had no access to their data. I worked on the forms so I didn’t really have to deal with people on calls an awful lot at all. Loved that job. Working with the gov side of HTB was always a nightmare though.

Well the first time I did good as a few months later I asked if I wanted to go back. But the second time I only did half the shift because I was sent home for pausing between stocking shelves for a few seconds to rub my arms cos it was freezing in the shop. The manager was like "I know you're agency and you probably don't care but do you mind being a bit faster?" something like that. 😒 Then I got sacked basically cos a few boxes were not not perfectly lined up. The other jobs I had have been voluntary at poundland and poundstretcher and they went alright.

I’ve had some shop jobs where speed isn’t important at all, but I even the ones where speed is fairly key they’re usually more lenient than that. *voluntary* at Poundland and Poundstretcher?? OP, do you know why you work at a slower pace? Do you have physical difficulties or pain? Or is it more related to your thinking and organisational processes? Some people are fighting constant distraction or just much slower processing whilst being of normal intelligence. I sympathise because after many years of being criticised for my 'time management' it turned out that I had been compensating for the effects of undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD my whole life. Although I am still not fast, I am less slow and regarded as the safest and most knowledgeable person in my team, purely due to the cast iron routines I have to set in place to ensure all steps are completed, and the checking routines I use to make sure I catch any errors. I would urge you to discuss this with your GP. They may be able to refer you for dyslexia/dyspraxia/ADHD assessment with a psychiatrist. It will likely be a long wait, but you do have the right to an assessment and can appeal if your GP refuses to refer you.

I think it's first. The team leader likes to get the planes done quicker where the other team like to take their time and not rush and just chill and have a laugh and everything. I haven't quit any of the jobs apart from some agency jobs. Most of the the time they let me go cos I looked tired (the actual reason they said) or they just don't call me back but sometimes don't tell me that until I turn up. 😒 They never lasted more than a month, though 2 jobs I had lasted 3 months. Have you thought about seeing your GP in case there's a medical reason you are slow? Are you physically less able or do you think it might be because you're not as focused as others and get distracted? Are you a perfectionist when everyone else isn't. Try and see what the difference is between how you work and others work to identify the issue. Best of luck ... I think the issue needs further investigation. I have a government administration job and it requires thing like note-taking (which you do have to do quickly on the spot) but then it's typing out those notes, answering calls, sending emails, setting up documents, ordering stuff. I work in an industry where you don't have to be quick but you have to be accurate like 99% accurate. You start going as slow as you like but you got to be right, in certain areas you practice on broken parts for up to a month as part of your training. People start and leave usually within 3 months as the attention to detail can be stressful some people feel like there never going to get it and give up. Trust me we have all had that I'm never going to get this moment.....That said the above poster is right you only get better with time. Quitting will only put you back to square one having to learn a new job with new routines. Look for something else if you must but don't limit yourself it's all part of a learning curve.

To be honest I doubt that aerospace engineers need to be any more accurate than most other engineers in their professional day to day.. generally in engineering design you start with the assumption there are inaccuracies "because humans" and then you put systems in place to mitigate against it, like approval processes, peer reviews, software tools and of course a lot of testing.. I rarely need to stress a lot about getting something wrong in my job even though mistakes can be costly, because I have easy ways of validating and testing my work.. I think accuracy is more of a stressor for jobs that require manual skill like surgery or manufacturing.. where you don't really get to have another go and there can be more of a time pressure

You get to rotate the plinth by hand so your own speed. Paint was white you really see how far over the edge you go with this colour, paintbrush is a 00 size so quite fine. Probability question draw a line with a ruler using a chunky pen. What is the Probability you can draw a line using a standard bic pen that would fit within the confines of the chunky mark without a ruler. Introduction Question, is it probably, likely language Introduction. Hypothesis prediction, limits, deviation, limits of accuracyand why we need them. Test the hypothesis using a standard lighbox each student can practice and then draw 10 lines team test what Probability each group comes to. Class probably answer.... Fill as needed

I've worked on these contracts from the councils side for one of the largest non London ones. They do look into complaints etc and we might get some penalty back or whatever but the problem is there's so little spare capacity that its hit emergency provision a lot of the time. So anything comes in it goes to anyone that will take it and is on the approved list. Also they can't really kick companies off the list without then needing to place all those people with another provider, which doesn't exist especially if it a larger one. Problem is there isn't enough options because care pays like shit despite paradoxically costing a bloody fortune. Anyone travelling is dead cost as they are not earning the company anything. Obviously the fraud side is bad but there's also a good lack of experience all round cos wheres the money? Might as well upskill and go get paid better or pick another industry that's equally as badly paid but less hassle.

This has been going on a long time, sadly. I was a care manager back in 2008 and would have to book people back-to-back or overlapping visits, which led to hundreds of our people we "cared" for receiving far less help than what was in their care package :( I had to investigate some of my staff when there was a serious incident because of this and the company tried to blame the staff rather than its own policies. I left the social care sector for good after that.

But they do all speed. I imagine Uber has incredible internally held stats about routes, speeds and speed limits and would prove they are all speeding. They slow down for the speed cameras to keep their licence, but I have never seen an Uber driver who actually complies with a 20, despite virtually the whole of London being 20 zones these days. All the efficiency stuff is done by algorithms. These days no taxi driver is thinking about routing and where to go for a fare.

I used to work at a horticulture college, so we had a lot of former students who ran little gardening businesses. The one who did best was actually a pretty bad student, they were OK at plant knowledge, but not great, and they were slow, easily distracted and they didn't want to do any of the hard labouring bits at all. What they *were* good at was talking to people and making friends. They managed to build up a whole network of bored, wealthy little old ladies who were happy to pay for a gardener but wouldn't have even considered paying for a 'companion'. They did a bit of weeding, cutting the grass, pruning, and spent most of their job gossiping and drinking tea.

If you don't stick around long enough to gain the skillset necessary to be quick then you're making a rod for your own back. Outside of being self employed id expect that you'll find every job you do will want you to do things in a timely manner, nobody expects you to work at the speed obtained by 10 years experience overnight but quitting every time someone comments on your speed seems very self destructive from an outside perspective. Maybe look at doing gardening for older folks as they're never too bothered at how long it takes so long as its done but again the longer you take the less you get paid as the work will be price work.

Tramping lorry driver, sit around for half an hour getting loaded, strap up then drive for 4 hours to delivery and sit around for an hour getting late. As long as the company you work for isn't run by cunts then being late is a non-issue, just call them and say its cause of an accident or traffic and they wont care and will just eta the delivery. If you can deal with being away from home all week and working long hour (up to 15 hrs a day) it's piss easy and pays pretty well.

I went from my only job having been retail for 14 years to admin in an NHS community team. Big up those "transferable skills", you likely have more than you think. Having used till systems meant I knew how to use technology. Helping to schedule the home deliveries meant I knew how to plan routes to schedule the home visits and travel time for the clinicians. Customer service experience meant I knew how to talk to people to take calls from patients on the phone. Stuff like that.

Then one day I saw a job on Indeed that hit one of my hobbies head on. I applied despite having no real experience and sold myself on my informal training and passion. I got the job. I'm actually over qualified for the task, but job ads always ask for the moon. Think laterally, what are you good at? (Writing, art, IT, cooking, etc.) Look for jobs that use that skill and see if you can get in the ground level of something completely different. Good luck, you'll find something.

I think working in a kitchen would be a good shout. Because you won't need to be quick. You'll need to move at lightning speed. Maybe a Lidl checkout? Just kidding; I'd recommend looking into first line IT support if you've got some basic IT skills because there's a perception that resolving IT issues is complicated (not really, certainly not most first line office stuff) and that'll give you time to go at your own pace to resolve the issue. Generally, first line needs to be friendly and personable on the phone rather than a tech genius whilst they email you a password change link or something. But really, don't worry about it. Speed at doing your job comes from familiarity, confidence and experience. No one walked into a professional kitchen on day one as a total beginner and worked at the speed of Gordon Ramsay.

My god of the best things to ever happen because of how chill it is. No managers, no employees and you can watch things on your phone for most of the night. After that I looked for only night jobs now I'm working corporate security at amazon head office. I love it so much that I would rather stay here then get a higher paying day job as a security guard. Even if it 12 hour night shift it is so calm and peaceful and out of the 12 hours 8 of them you are alone and either on your phone or computer but you do have to be alert if something does come up.

Before i had to leave the industry due to a violence conviction, i used to work security, mainly close protection but then went into management and training etc. If you want a cushty job there's nothing easier than night site security. Walk around site once an hour, maybe scan a couple of deister points (little tags) to say you've attached patrolled, call control once an hour to say you're awake/not dead. If you're not working the Job Centre the also fund your training and match you with a training provider so you can get the accreditation needed for an SIA license. Just be aware in low level night time security there's little chance of progression, the hours are long, the pays less than great and your social life will be non existent. And you'll meet plenty of bellends who'll swear blind theyre basically a mix of anti terror cops and special forces 😂

If you’re old enough and have a clean license, try home to school transport. There’s very little pressure to get thing done on time, and you have plenty of time to do the route. The downside is the pay is shit, you have five to ten peoples lives in you4 hands for multiple hours a day, your employer will likely try and cheat you out of holiday entitlement and sick pay and if things go wrong, you’ll get them blame. But other than that, there’s not much time pressure. The policy at the company I work for is if you’re late, you’re late. Better to get there late, than not at all.

Did that when I worked for the agency. I was a cleaner in a hospital and it was the top 2 jobs that was the most boring I've ever done. I had to go around a single ward cleaning everything and once I've done, do it all again until I had a 30 minute break. This was for 10 hours. My cousin started working for a large hotel group cleaning rooms/making beds - he got sacked after a few months for being too slow, after the training period they were only allowed 15 minutes per room. He moved on to be a gardener for the local parks which he loved, could work at his own pace. The council subcontracted the gardening work. The subcontractor took him on but the job had changed, they drove the gardeners from Park to Park giving them only half a day at a Park. He hated it so went self employed as a gardener which he quite enjoys. He said you have to be very careful about who you work for; avoid retired people particularly old ladies, they have the time to watch you and criticize and argue about every penny and minute you don't appear to be working. So a self employed Gardener could be an option if you don't mind the outdoors and can select the right clients.

If you have practical skills, setting up as an independent tradesman, gardener or similar might work. You can make good money if you pick up lots of jobs, but if you want a slower pace you have the option to take fewer jobs and still make a decent amount. Individual customers usually want the job done well, rather than fast. Apprenticeships are something to consider but speed will be an issue if you're not working for yourself. If you're sociable and have the ability to deal with lots of people politely, that's a skill in itself. I would look at jobs like customer service, high-end retail, concierge services, etc. where quality of service is more important than speed.

On jet2 planes we gotta organise the magazines in a certain order whereas on other planes we just put the safety card at the front. I also check the booklets for any major rips and toss them if so. Everyone else does that quickly and is already several rows down by the time I've done a few. On the planes I just put the safety card at the front I'm usually good at keeping up but still behind them. I also pick up a lot of rubbish like sweet wrappers off the floor that might get stuck in the vacuum whereas the others that I noticed yesterday just leave it on the floor and the person doing the vacuuming picks them up.

Have you thought about becoming a butler or doing domestic work for an estate/household? Depending on the client with those sorts of jobs attention to detail and trust are more important than speed and they often come with accommodation and sometimes even catering too which could help with some of the other stress points you have mentioned? The skill set wouldn’t be too different from what you’ve currently described.

Yea a little bit. It's kinda like a perfectionist trait like if there's a spot someone missed then I get it and if there's sweet wrappers on the floor I pick them up so they don't get stuck in the vacuum even though everyone else leaves them on the floor and the person doing the vacuum picks them up. I also quickly check the booklets when I'm organising them (you gotta organise them on jet2 in a specific order) and bin any that have major rips in them.

Health and safety. The money is really good depending on your level/qualifications too. If you go in as a trainee somewhere you can get all your qualifications paid for, then just stay there for a couple years so you don't have to pay it back and move on to somewhere better paid. That's what I did. It can get stressful when people have accidents, but when there's no accidents to deal with it's just writing risk assessments and ensuring the business is compliant with the standards to pass external audits, coming up with ideas to create a safer work environment, testing the fire alarm. Of course it depends on what kind of industry you're doing health and safety in, I work in manufacturing. Construction is probably a little more complicated. In general it's relatively slow paced.

It is and it isn't but healthcare. We have timed slots for people for appointments but sometimes running over by 5-15 mins really makes a difference to that person. In both care work and my dental nursing job (especially when it comes to face to face work in reception rather than on the phone) I love having time to talk to people. But that causes delays and queues. My favourite part of my care job was talking and interacting with residents in a social way not just in their care. I got to laugh and chat with them and find a connection others might not find, but time was money and there was not enough staff to give all your time to one or 2 people, I had to share it over 12 or so at a time as well as the admin and randomly being called elsewhere. The same goes to dental nursing (which I love). I like to answer questions and discuss treatment as well as what the patient's plans are that day. I also have to do the rest of my job but those rare times we have an extra 5-10 mins planned in that appointment can be great. I hate working in reception as honestly I despise answering the phone and getting caught out in what to do for certain appointments as i rarely work there and they constantly change how things work. So when I take a call or have a patient at my desk I do everything I possibly can do to help. As a nurse I am particularly good at advising those with problems what to do in the meantime before they come to their appointment when they have a problem, that and giving advice to those who can't find a dentists so what to do and who to call. I have had many complements of gratitude for the time I spend with them rather than leaving them just a number to deal with it. The time helps but then I get side eye for how long it takes, but then I don't want to be there in the first place so its either my way of helping or they are a staff member short

I used to do disability support and it was lovely. There was a degree of time pressure, but only for short bursts, and generally it's pretty relaxed with the ability to prioritise your own tasks and work at your own pace. Unfortunately the pay isn't amazing and management tend to be kind of shite.

I did on-site security at a factory for for a couple of years. 12 hour shifts. hour 1 - patrol for 20 odd minutes, then chill for 40. hour 2 - sit on front desk, deal with maybe 4 people in a busy hour hour 3 - control the gate, ie if you see a car press the button, if you see a lorry get a couple of details then press the button. repeat 4 times. It is well paid for what it is.

Looks like you are mostly getting jobs that need to clear the same tasks repeatedly fast. You probably have some undiagnosed disability that makes your weakness processing short term planning quickly. Worst job for that is anything that requires multitasking in manual work like cartering or cleaning. You'll probably do better in project work which requires more complex, bigger solutions. For now, if you need something that may not require much experience, there are seasonal jobs during the summer for kayak or aqua sports equipment rental that requires you to sit around in a tent next to the water body until a tourist comes along. You sign some papers, give them a safety talk, and move the boat. Also try check out small gym or fitness clubs for a receptionist role. To get these jobs, you do need to physically go in and give your CV to raise your chances to get noticed before a job opening arises.

Nothing medical as far as I know. I've applied to places like primark cos it looks like a chill job whenever I go there but never got past the interview. I'd like to move on from cleaning as I've been doing it 4 years now but don't have experience in anything else. Think I might have to go on apprenticeship or something. OP, aside from the fact you're new and therefore supposed to be slower, is it possible you're trying to do the job too well? In my experience I've always been slower than others at work but on closer inspection my colleagues were cutting corners and just rushing the work. This has been the case at every single job. They weren't doing a high quality job but also as it turned out that didn't matter to the people in charge.

Most employers will demand more speed until you or the job breaks. They either want more money from your work to the point of collapse or the work load is increased until, again, collapse. I briefly did audio dictation in an office. Their 'minimum quota' increased more than 600% in the three months I was there. I did the calculations. I hit close to 160 words a minute at one point and was told I was unacceptably slow. We were measured by the audio minutes we transcribed. 60 seconds was 60 seconds whether there were 10 words or 100. On the flipside the staff submitting the recordings were expected to add more and more detail in less and less time. When someone is tripping over their words to get their dictation down fast enough it becomes harder to understand the recording and yet we were expected to type faster. The answer is to find a job where precision and flawlessness are the goal and speed is an also ran. Those are rare.

My job now is 12 hour night shift and I get around 5/5 and a half hours of sleep. I don't eat great cos I need to take sealed packages of food with me cos I have trust issues and don't have a locker so I have to leave my bag in the staff room so I take biscuits or pack of chocolate. I don't drink or smoke. The only exercise I get is at work 😅 Yea there's a lot of changes I could make.

All jobs are a combination of speed and quality. You want your hairdresser to get it right, but you don't have all day, and they would go out of business if they could only do one person each day. If you're cleaning an operating theatre it's more important it's done right than a school classroom, and as such the person goes slower. This doesn't mean they are working less hard - they are taking longer to do a better job. So no, all jobs include an element of speed, otherwise you aren't doing anything at all. There is a balance of the importance of speed and quality that differs between jobs.

See if you can speak to.someone at the job to get some advice on being quicker. It may well be that you're being too thorough or taking more care than is expected, which is slower. Or it may be that you don't have the technique of an experienced member of the team, and they can teach you. You're always going to be slower than people who have been doing it for years. But what you really need is a supportive team or manager who both understands that, and helps you grow. Do you know what it is that makes you slower? If it does come down to experience, you won't find a job you're already experienced at. If it comes down to a physical inability to do certain things, then that would perhaps lend itself to other types of jobs instead. Lots of the jobs you've referred to are very physical, you could look into an office job. Some places like call centres can be hell when it comes to working quickly, but I've worked in a few offices that were much more chill and people were just expected to keep busy rather than having their output timed.

I apply for a Christmas job at royal mail every year and been employed there 2 (or 3) times and applied through an agency that's partnered with them but they literally take forever. Went through so many hoops only to be asked to do it again after no response after a year then there's been nothing again. I would apply for a post person but the ad asks for a manual licence and I've only got automatic. I had to switch cos I couldn't get the hang of manual. Don't think I'd be good as a police officer cos I'm kinda shy and introverted and have to build up courage to speak to people sometimes.

From personal experience it's an easier process to get hired directly through the Royal Mail website for the Christmas temp jobs instead of going through their agency links, but the pay is lower. I would suggest that this isn't the ideal position for you if you're struggling with speed, the workload is constant on your feet and the only breaks people took were if they smoked they could go outside for 5 minutes. I saw people quit after 2 shifts because they couldn't handle how physically demanding it was.

On the back of this. If you feel like you can get over the issues of being shy, consider applying to be a PCSO with the Police. I've done that for years now and it's a job you can very much take at your own pace. I come in, look through my emails and job list and pretty much structure my day how I want to, at my own pace. Other than a road traffic collision or a high risk missing person I can generally take the day at what most would consider a 'slow' pace but that's kinda the point as I'm there to be available to speak with and be a part of the local community.

Every job you do is a balance of time vs quality. You can have it fast and low quality, or slow and high quality. So in your cleaning role are you treating it like your own home and cleaning 100%. Can you do a faster job by lowering quality to a level that is acceptable to the company? Best bet is ask someone else at work - just tell them you're struggling to keep up and can you watch what they do, and then copy it. Even if you think it's not clean enough, if it meets the needs of the business you'll be fine.

Speed comes with time and experience. When I started my job, I was told how long it takes an experienced person to make one item. So my goal was to get that time, too. After I learned how to make it, I started on the speed and my quality plummeted. They didn't expect me to hit that time frame immediately. I'm sure your job doesn't expect you to be super quick immediately. If you're concerned, talk to your manager and explain, I'm sure they'll reassure you.

Depending on your circumstances, maybe look into apprenticeships/further education etc and invest in a career you actually want to do. Having said that, as others have mentioned, you're not going to be upto speed off the bats with manual jobs, muscle memory with kick in eventually and you will be faster.

I feel the same way. I was given eight weeks to hit 85%, and in week eight, I was only at 60%. I almost got fired, but they gave me another four weeks, during which I managed to hit those targets. I still struggle now; it's brutal. I don't think I can keep it up, I'm going to try and stay for another 6 month, get my driving licence and look for something easier.
