Some scale masters will park you on the scale for a while just to see if you get nervous, start fucking around on your phone, etc. Gives them the reasonable suspicion excuse to pull you around back and tear your shit apart. Source: 30+ year veteran DOT officer buddy.

I haven't had to pull into a weigh station since I've started driving. I always get a bypass on the eld cuz apparently the company has a good reputation with the dot 🤷

Iveseen a single cop sitting at a mobile inspection site just pulling people in to let them roll through. He was still sitting in his car 3 hours later when I went back that way. Honestly I think they find it funny

North dakota was this one, but yeah I did hit one in PA, but it was at least a few cops at a rest area, this was a lone guy, looked like he was playing on his phone hitting whatever pull in button they have

They get all of the trucks in so that they can give them a cursory look over as they slowly roll by. They're looking for obvious things, bad load securement, wobbling wheels, serious rust, lights out, no dot or IFTA on the door, etc.

Yeah pretty much seeing when the last time your truck was inspected and to see if they want to inspect it. Also for fuel taxes so it shows up that you went through the state.

I’ve been pulled in 4 times as an o/o in the past 6 months lol. I have a clean driving record and passed all 3. I was pulled in 2 weeks ago and then a week later I got pulled in again and when the guy came up to me I said, “I was pulled in a week ago for a lvl 3. Why do you guys keep pulling me in so much?” “He goes, you did? Oh, you can go” and walks away. So idk what the fuck they look at if anything. My guess is they just pick random trucks for the most part.

They've been going hard on the small fleets (1 or 2 trucks) around me. I've been driving for 6 years, but got my first "random" inspection 6 weeks ago, then my second "random" inspection 4 weeks ago, and my third "random" inspection this week. Two level 1s ans one level 3. Here's to hoping my insurance likes to see those clean inspections.

My best guess is that they say something like, "today we're pulling in every 10th truck," or maybe, "pull in every truck over 75,000 pounds." They can't see the truck ½ mile away at the sensor. My question was why did they have me sitting on the scale for a few minutes this morning. Other times I get green lighted almost as soon as I stop. I understand they run my DOT number and maybe the internet was slow. Or maybe they were looking at my tires or brakes on a thermal imaging camera. I got inspected once when my EDL wasn't working, so I wondered if they can see that an EDL isn't putting out a Bluetooth signal.

In my very limited experience as a sand and gravel daycab driver it appears to me that the scales are stricter depending on the economic status of the area you’re heading into. For example, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the scale open on the 10 East in Riverside/San Bernardino CA, heading towards rural Riverside and Imperial County and AZ. But I’d bet money the scale is open coming the opposite way, the gateway to the greater Los Angeles area.

My input will have little to do with actual truckers but I drove a 26ft box truck for a moving company for 6 years. We always got stopped leaving Texas going through Oklahoma or Arkansas. Kinda hinted a question at an officer about why we always get stopped. His response was they have to preform random inspections and if they have a new trainee for the next month or two there will be a lot of random’s to train the new employee. He also hinted at the moving company I work for and they always get hit because we always fail in one way or another. lol I guess the company trucks were never able to pass so it was an easy ticket.

If it's the va ones on 95. The tower is on south side which controls both sides. Sometimes they will have you on scale for like5 minutes. One night I straight up said into the two way mic. "Hey am I good there's five trucks behind me now." The light changed green no one responded lol.

My company has very good CSA scores, so we hardly ever get pulled in, much less inspected. But two days ago, on I-57 in Illinois, I got the "bypass" signal on my box (using Drivewyze). I saw flashing lights behind me a half mile later! The officer said right off the bat, "You didn't do anything wrong, I'm just performing a random inspection." Gave him my license, permit book, and BOL. He returned a few minutes later with my "passed" Level 3 paperwork. No idea why I got picked! But I left happy. My company pays me a cash bonus for passing an inspection 🤑

My guess has always been 1) to fill quota 2)if they detect something like your company score is crap your tire is leaking obviously have lights out etc 3)pull trucks in to break up traffic.
