And the way things are going before long we'll have the Sanctuary Districts as seen in the Deep Space 9 episodes Past Tense 1 and 2. At least we get to 'stare into the nightmare rectangle black mirror and watch society collapse in realtime.' [memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Past\_Tense,\_Part\_I\_(episode)](https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Past_Tense,_Part_I_(episode)) Copy/paste of some quotes for the non-Trekkers: >"By the early 2020s, there was a place like this in every major city in the United States." "Why are these people in here? Are they criminals?" "No, people with criminal records weren't allowed in the Sanctuary Districts." "Then what did they do to deserve this?" "Nothing. They're just people without jobs or places to live." "So they get put in here?" "Welcome to the 21st century, Doctor." >"If push comes to shove, if something disastrous happens to the Federation… if we are frightened enough, or desperate enough… how would we react?" \- Bashir

Pfft compared to the religious, the stupid, and the Star Wars children? Almost everyone has had at some point a kind of delicious delusion for an afterlife, chance at immortality, or at least a distant future better than the present and past. Can we really blame people for keeping their hopium IV drip considering the intoxicating addictive properties?

Look how the latest Star Trek shows explain how they got to their current point. Nuclear war that almost wiped out all life, then they rebuilt from there. That's pretty much the only way we come out the other side and survive as well at this point.

star trek never accounted for human-induced climate change the effects of that, once modern society collapses, is going to take many thousands of years for the planet to rectify. there's no telling what kind of climate patterns the world will ultimately settle into.

Humanity is not one entity. It’s 0.05% the true geniuses that actually move civilizations forward, 0.95% the assistants to the geniuses and 99% plebs that have as much input and control over their lives as they do when riding a rollercoaster. Just like every species of organic life that ever evolved on Earth, the vast majority of people were always meant to die and have no meaningful impact on the gene pool. There’s estimated to have been 100 billion humans that’s ever lived and most do not have living descendants today. Going back to your statement, some offshoot of humanity might very well become interstellar. Your descendants, if you have them, will almost certainly not be part of that group.

This is actually an absurd idea to me. I bet there are many geniuses stuck in sweat shops or doing something stupid while idiots move civilization “forward.” And by move forward I mean ruin everything for short term gain. Our technological advancement has cost nearly everybody and everything on this planet EVERYTHING.
View on Reddit #23395808

Illustrious-Try-3743@reddit

If they were stuck in a sweatshop doing something mundane and repetitive, then what is the indicator that they were a genius other than a being your made up point? My point is vast majority of the population is entirely inconsequential. That’s why 99.9% of the species that have ever lived are extinct. Without the technology that’s alleviated the burdens of food production, there wouldn’t be close to 8 billion mouth breathers on this planet.

I’m not in this subreddit all that often, but I certainly know Reddit well enough, so I imagine most of the complaints about humanity in this subreddit is under-researched bellyaching based on emotions and the need to feel you’re important. What I’ve posted is actually how this planet and evolution works, which is, it doesn’t care about you or any organisms, for that matter, at all. Survival is pure happenstance.

There was some Russian made (I think) B-movie that explained this neatly. This alien lands, he looks almost human but he's bald and has no mouth. So they take him to this military commander and he explains the whole thing. There's a colony ship on the way. They do this to habitable planets on a schedule. They take a clone of themselves, remove the telepathy, a quarter of the intelligence, cut the lifespan drastically, and increase aggression and mating drive to epidemic proportions. They then set these clones loose on a target planet. Purpose: bioweapon. Meant to sterilize the target planet of all indigenous life, then go after each other until they either kill themselves off or are at a manageable level that the colony ship can kill off from orbit. "Our weapons never fail..."

There was a short time period between when I thought this was possible, and when I realized it *shouldn't happen anywa*y. Because the future of an interstellar humanity is literally the humans of Avatar. Continuing to destroy and consume the resources of the Universe for no reason than to just keep growing like a cancer. The only end result being, instead of ten people who are trillionaires and 10 billion of the rest who are in poverty, there are now ten people who own entire planets, and 10 quintillion of the rest who are in poverty. Literally multiplying human misery by millions of times, and for what? So the people in charge can have a few more zeroes at the end of their bank account??

I feel like people often get this idea that humans are unique in this regard and use it as justification to be anti human. Not saying that's what your doing don't get me wrong. But the same thing happens if you place deer in a place with alot of grass and vegetation but no wolves . The deers eventually over populate till there's no grass left and then they all die out The problem isint that we conflict with nature, the problem is we haven't ascended past it

true but humans are unique that weve evolved away from pro sustanible limitations. other species havent and mostly reach a equalibrium with its enviornment . our species in the other hand evolved the intelligence , cooperation and etc to counter and overcome predators, short term resource limitations and etc. therefore causing humans to expand extract and etc to such unsustaniable levels. the problem is we are natures systematic flaw. nature has survived so far because it created species thst counter each other or are countered by the enviornment. thus allowing sustaniability. but at the same time natures laws of  evolution and adoption would eventually create a species intelligent enough to overcome the limitations. which is what caused the breakdown of the current world. nature contradicting itself

Escapism and hopium. Let’s face it, our best bet is life extension or something resembling immortality. This may sound like a bad idea to some, but upon deeper consideration, granting people longer lifespans or something that resembles immortality would change how we perceive death. With extended lifespans, we may come to value humanity and being alive more, leading to better care for the planet. No longer feeling the pressure of time ticking away like a candle burning up, we could shift our focus towards sustainable living and preserving the environment whilst we find new meaning in this world and face the direct or indirect consequences of our own lives on the environment.

God that looks weird in 1080P. I'm assuming it's got some level of enhancement as well. It has that uncanny camcorder look to it. How to explain that. Like all the grainy that made it fictional is gone. It looks like if there were wires controlling the people you'd be able to see them. View on Reddit #23377009

PatchworkRaccoon314@reddit

Honestly it's not even a recent development. Thinking that this is just a problem with modern globalist capitalism, that can be done away with, is another type of hopium. Complete destruction is baked into human DNA; being murderous monkeys that cannot be satisfied ever is the one trait that gave humans dominance over other lives, and allowed them to outlast (read: rape and murder) the other early hominids. The pre-industrial world almost hunted whales to extinction for their oil. Medieval Europe burned and logged all its decent forests. Ancient civilizations so thoroughly ate themselves dry that it caused the entire Bronze Age Collapse. And pre-historic Americans hunted megafauna to non-existence. Yes, things started an extremely rapid downward trend as soon as people organized and put the bankers and landowners in charge. But this isn't exactly *new*.
View on Reddit #23364505

tonormicrophone1@reddit

while this is true idk if that would be comparable to the destruction we see today. yes we were exactly as hungry parasites as we are now today compared to the past. but all of those ancient destructive tendecies were limited by the technological levels of past human societies to the point that even with the damages, the damages were limitrd enough to the point  the earths overall enviornment could survive. while humans could still survive the catosphres caused by their own actions and still exist. its only after the industrial revolutions thats when  humans destructive tendecies reached a zenith. and where we are not only seeing the extinction of the human species but also extreme long lasting damages and destruction to the entirity of the earths enviornemnt
