Why do left lane drivers block the right lane before a merge?

Just home from a longish drive, part of it led up to some roadworks which meant the motorway lanes merged to the left. There was a queue in the left lane a mile out from it, right lane clear so I used that rather than add to the queue. Had two separate cars swerve out as I passed to try and block (or just annoy) me, I merged into a huge gap near the merge into the flow of traffic as it was moving fine at the end causing zero delay to anyone.
What’s the thinking here, put yourself, me and others at risk as we haven’t joined a pretty a long queue for no reason? Genuine question as to what the logic is?
