Why do some people use elipses as punctustion?

"punctustion" sounds like a really obscure process in manufacturing something. It involves chemicals and sprockets. But on a serious note, I think while messaging on the mediums you mentioned is technically written text, people treat it very much like spoken text. So if someone were to pause when speaking, they reflect that pause in their text. There are other things like this too: Things. Like. This. Where it's obviously not supposed to be three separate sentences, but rather emphasizing each word as if emphasizing them in speech. Considering we don't have specific punctuation for these kinds of speech patterns, it makes sense that people adapt what there is. Excluding linguistic markdown which can cater for micro pauses and even interruptions. They say English is a living language, but at times it seems more like a rabidly mutating language. I like that though.
