Absolutely fucking not. I've been quite a few places in the world and I wouldn't even consider the UK in the "Top Tier"

And where is just out of interest?

That's subjective, Mexico or Brazil would be my choice

Varied, yes. Quality, no.

Sometimes a good range of average (and very much still enjoyable) things is more desirable than a small range of great quality things

Absolutely, although having lived in cities around the world where a bad meal would be hard to come by I'd say the UK food scene, albeit varied is by no means of a high quality. Average mostly with a smattering of good places, IMO.

I would say where it's good it's fantastic. London in particular, but also other cities have great quality, varied food from all sorts of different cuisines. Outside of that, I think it leaves something to be desired. You obviously get the odd gem, but if you live in a random 30k-100k town like much of the country does, then the selection (both variety and quality) can be pretty dire.

There are just as many shitty restaurants in London as there are across the rest of the country. London is a centre for great food but the majority of towns throughout the UK have at least a couple of highly rated restaurants - towns of 100k will have a decent number to chose from. There are loads of small towns across the UK that have Michelin star restaurants

That's bollocks. There's loads of great restaurants all over the country.

12.5% service charge is creeping in in London tho.

London and Bristol are great. Aberdeen's supposed to be good? Many seaside towns have good food. Not sure about northern towns tbh.

Yes, thanks to the immigrants

Variety is great, but quality is very patchy. The countries where one reliably eats best tend to be ones where things grow most easily.
