the beauty of sureendering an illegal, secret arms stash is that they just have to take your word for it that you surrendered everything. It’s also known that CIRA/RIRA operatives that disagreed with the peace process fucked off with some of the weapons.

The official IRA and the Original Loyalists had a large consignment of Imperial German rifles delivered just prior to World War One in 1913/early 1914 1,000 Mannlicher rifles 9,000 Gewehr 1888s and 4,600 Italian Vetterli-Vitali M1870/87 rifles were delivered to the Loyalists The Republicans got 1500 semi-obsolete Manlicher M1871

Most were destroyed by the good Friday agreement. With the destruction being witnessed by a priest (make of that what you will) It would have been interesting to know what was in some of these as there would have been some seriously valuable weapons there. Such as serial number Thompson's. But at the end of the day it's better that they were (probably) destroyed as it advanced the peace process somewhat

My understanding is that late 1960s through to the end of the 1970s arms were predominantly domestic American weaponry (the Provos were famously big fans of the AR-15 and AR-18 of course). After the feds broke up that network at the beginning of the 1980s, most weapons were coming in from the Eastern Bloc via Libya. I actually doubt that there is/was many "museum piece" type finds in these caches. The Provos didn't have access to Official Sinn Fein (Worker's Party) caches and pretty quickly managed to set up channels to receive more modern arms (such as the aforementioned Armalites).

Aye they were big into the Armilite. Remember A is for Armilite. And really rusty Aks. They were still using Thompsons into the 1980s and I remember in the 2000s one being seized then. Although I can't remember what model it was. I will disagree with you on the museum piece comment. The conflict was over a very long time and having seen some the weapons seized a number were 60/70 years old so anything could be possible

Depends what you mean by "the conflict", the Provisional IRA of 1969 was significantly removed from the original IRA it claimed the mantle of.

I'm talking from the start so from around partition not the troubles. As I've said there were plenty of 60/70 years old weapons destroyed as part of the good Friday agreement, and I've seen old gear as well. I'm not getting into the politics of it all. Just speaking from experience

Yeah that’s what I was assuming would happen to most. There very well could be some undiscovered caches still hidden, just have to hope that those won’t meet the same fate when found

The captured ones are in military museums or were used for training. Certainly the ones from the North. We as Army used to have all sorts, including Dshk and a Barrett to play with and fire occasionally as part of the WIS (weapons intelligence section) in Northern Ireland. The RUC/PSNI had a huge collection in one of their stations too.
