Are canned fish such as Herring, Sardines a good source of extended food nutrition wise?

I love smoked Herring in a can as well as others including mackerel, is canned fish enough protein, etc, etc?

I always keep smoke fished stocked and rotated. I love the stuff. Even if it's not super nutritional it's just going to be a good moral booster

It’s super nutrient dense

Did a little research to confirm my instinctive answer of absolutely, yes. Sardines specifically bring potassium, iron, magnesium and zinc to the table plus vitamin D. Adding them to your diet is going to help your muscles and immune system do their job. Omega-3 is the heart healthy oil, they contain it. And they don't have the same mercury contamination as other fish, since they feed exclusively on plankton.
Eating a couple cans a week is going to make a huge difference in how you feel on a calorie restricted, meat poor diet and also improve your sleep.

If you had to choose between canned sardines or tuna, which would you pick?

Youre not supposed to eat too much Tuna so Sardines are preferable

Thanks for the heads up. I was not aware of that!

I know I'm two years late here but I want to explain why.
Tuna is a high on the food chain fish. They don't have many predator's and they eat fish smaller than them, a fish smaller than a tuna is still a big fish, and that big fish eats a smaller fish, and that smaller fish eats a smaller fish, all of the fish have mercury, the smaller fish has the tiniest amount, the bigger fish has a moderate amount, and the tuna has a large amount. I eat tuna here and there, but mostly from sashimi as tuna tastes way better raw than cooked, a little bit won't hurt you but if you're eating 2 cans a day you'll eventually get Mercury poisoning and from what I've heard it isn't fun. Eat all the herring, sardines and mackerel you want, they're a very cheap source of nutrients and a healthy choice for protein and omega3.
