I would dearly love one of these. There are a number of vendors building them now. The last ABILITIES EXPO I was able to attend had three different vendors showing their equipment. I was able to test drive one. Fantastic technology. I just wish they didn't cost as much as a small car! I guess I could always try "Not A Wheelchair", they look like a more affordable solution.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.

That’s a treadchair

I actually have me of these. It is made by Action Trackchair, and the model I have is an STS. They go about anywhere. You can drive on the beach and actually straight into the water up to about 18”. I use mine off-road and in the snow where I live. Not so good in powder though… https://actiontrackchair.com/models/

Trackchair… much cooler. The fact that it can actually go off-road instead of just looking the part is awesome.

There are at least 22 wheels on that chair.

And yet

These things are really useful, but upsettingly expensive. If that's an Axis 30 trackchair, it looks like it retails for $19,400.

Wonder if this is one that's designed by Zach of Jerryrigeverything?

When I was in highschool they came out with a wheelchair that could balance the occupant upright, and could traverse stairs. IIRC it had like two Pentium 4 CPUs in it or something similar that gave it the processing power to sort its gyros, motors, and sensors.

billysugger000@reddit

Was that the same one that could lift the person to an almost upright position? Where did it go?

The iBot wheelchair, invented by the same guy who came up with the Segway, Dean Kamen.

With the state of the pavements round here something like that would suit us.

I believe this, or something similar, was created for a disabled war vet so he could still go hunting.

IIRC one of the first tread chairs was indeed made for that reason. But the fabricator who made it got swamped with inquiries and went into business making them. Last time I looked into them for my son, there were two companies making them, but neither were compatible with the seating system he needs

That's very cool, but I'd hate to waste those treads on cement. Beaches and back woods!

You’re getting wrong, put some off road lights on it and you get the ultimate mall conqueror
View on Reddit #22902226

Old_timey_brain@reddit

Yeah, that *would* work! The mall floors aren't too abrasive, and you could probably do some cool slides with it.

This was in front of an appropriate store for this thing: REI. We have beaches and hundreds of miles of trails nearby that maybe they cruise.
