Two months in Dallas, culture shocks series.
Posted by HighlyPossible@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 676 comments
Background: I just moved here from a small city in the west (Not CA lol) 2 months ago.
Here are some of the culture shocks I've experience living in the DALLAS DOWNTOWN area. ( This MIGHT NOT apply to other areas of Dallas and surrounding towns/cities.)
- On the hwy: I was a ten year safe driver, not even a tix in the past, then I rear ended someone day 2 here in Dallas. Then on week 6 someone else T boned me. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YALL PEOPLE!!!!! Now my auto insurance went from $650 to $1300!!!!! I seriously developed some sort of fear every time I'm getting on the hwy! My palm be sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. there's vomits on my sweater already, mom's spaghetti!!!! And people rage drive!!! Like honking and flashing their light at me when I was only on the left lane to pass a big semi for like 15 seconds..... And most of the cars honking and flashing at me are people driving big pickup trucks. Driving used to be so relaxing for me, now it's not anymore. I try to avoid getting on the hwy at all cost.
- Everyday convo: Strangers asking personal questions like " What do you do for work and where do you work and what position?" Where i'm coming from we don't ask these "Status defining, income defining, social circle defining" questions. I am sort of warming up to these questions now but at first it was quit strange and I took it as being nosy.
- Traffic: Ay dios mio..... What else there is to say about this? It's bad. I've learned to put two empty gatorade bottles in my car just in case.
- Weird roads: Some roads in downtown are One Way traffic, but somehow there are no signs in plain view! I found myself making left turn into the wrong way traffic twice already, but thank god none of them were in rush hour. Another thing is that I have no idea which path I can drive on or not, there were times a narrow path looks like a pedestrian path, like an alleyway, like pathway made with red bricks, I had to circle around cuz I wasn't sure and don't want to drive on somewhere i'm not supposed to drive on. But then the other day while i was walking my dog, I found that people were driving on that brick pathway. ( If you want to be exact, I'm talking about the pathways/alleyways around at&t building in downtown.
- People dress so nice in downtown. I wore raggedy t-shirt to the gym and I almost turned back and drove home... Most people in the gym dressed up like they were on a fitness date or something. So lesson learned there. Where I'm from people be wearing university hoodies and shorts to the gym.
- Outdoor activities: None, over and out.
- Jobs: They are so easy to find. As long as you ain't lazy, you gonna survive, at the very least you can work at the oilfields.
- Options: Coming from a small city, we got like 3 chinese restaurants and 1 of them is panda express.... And you have to order most things from Amazon cuz the physical store will very likely not having the item. Here in Dallas, you can find anything you want! Each with countless options for you to choose! Like wow!!!
Conclusion: Dallas is too big for me. I def made a mistake moving here. Should have started with a smaller place. I miss the big desert, endless mountains, the loneliest hwy, the lakes, the ghost town where I can shoot my guns in any direction without a care in the world, bonfire in the woods, fucking under the moonlight on top of a hill with a city skyline view.
Sewageliving@reddit
I relate to you on so much of this. I moved from to Dallas 5 years ago after only living in small agricultural towns and had such a hard time adjusting. The driving was certainly a big one, but the largest by far is the culture.
Having spent a lot of my life in the Midwest, and prior the northwest mountains, I miss the genuine kindness and friendliness of the people there. I miss shooting the shit with neighbors, someone stopping to help you change a flat, or a random box of cookies “cause we had extra.”
Even people in New York, although brisk, are far more genuine than a lot of the people in Dallas and it can be extremely lonely when you don’t know anyone.
Eggaloney@reddit
Phoenix is way more unfriendly than DFW. I say this as a former Arizona resident.
Sewageliving@reddit
I have never spent any time in the true west states but I believe you. Phoenix is also a wealthy transplant community just as DFW.
Eggaloney@reddit
Phoenix I feel like has even more transplants than DFW. Try saying hi to someone in a neighborhood in Phoenix or on a trail. They'll just look you down. People stare you down a lot in Phoenix. They get angry so easily over small things. Employers are abusive. I was written up for something so small that it was overblown. Hostility in most places. People say, "excuse me" when your not even in their way. I remember at a park in Chandler, this lady got behind me and said, "ring ring I need to get through." Then being ignored at fast food places when you try to get the workers attention because you need ketchup or they forgot your cup. And forget about making good friends. The vast majority of people I encountered and met were all jerks and really aggressive. I met some nice people, but not so many. Twice I've almost been hit by someone opening a door and no apology at all. Attitudes in customer service. I jokingly called it the Phoenitude. They say there is the Dallatude, but I've never experienced it. People here have been so so so much nicer and more helpful. Maybe DFW is not the friendliest metro area, but by far friendlier than Phoenix or anywhere in Arizona. Arizona was just horrific in regards with the rudeness, but it does have some beautiful scenery and Phoenix as a city is super nice and clean, but people are not nice or kind.
I actually found California to be one of the friendlier states compared to Arizona. I'd travel to California and I was treated way better there. People just seemed nicer. I would have moved there in a heartbeat, but I would have been homeless because my income would not be enough to afford an apartment there. I just wanted to leave Arizona, so I chose Texas.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yea that's me, I came here knowing no one. And I'm a guy too, so makes it even harder. ( Girls can find friends, dates a lot easier than guys. IMO)
Sewageliving@reddit
I would agree with that. I have a tight-knit group of girlfriends now that are almost are from out of state as well. I could only imagine being a guy.
Eggaloney@reddit
Phoenix is such a better city than DFW. Why on earth did you come here. Even Houston is a nicer city.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Are you being satire? I really can't tell.
christydtx@reddit
This thread is a good argument for thorough research before moving. Perhaps even visiting beforehand.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
I visited Dallas before I moved here. But it was around last yr July, it was soooooo hot I was so irritated cuz I didn't sleep the night before the flight and when I arrived I was already tired, so I only explore the malls( which were awesome! 50 times bigger than the mall we had.) ; I LOVE country music so I went to bars in stockyards( awesome as well), then I ran out of energy, so I ended the exploring.
christydtx@reddit
The Stockyards are in Fort Worth, which is a whole world away from Dallas, culturally.
PokemonMimi1921@reddit
You sound like you should be north of Denton (referred to as Little D here in North Texas). Just have to deal with college drivers if you come into Denton itself.
pgbcs@reddit
So half of these are related to driving and the other half are positive. 🤷🏼♀️
lentils4life@reddit
The outdoors here likely won’t hold any comparison to the outdoors im imagining OP moved from. Very flat. Mostly man made stuff. Not saying it’s bad, just doesn’t compare. The airport is central, so there’s that
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Can you enlighten me on what are some of the outdoor things I can do that is not in the city? I usually love hiking (moderate to hard 2-4 hours hikes); hunting; target shooting, dirt biking, off roading, geocaching.
anonymousladyhi@reddit
Lots of fun at White Rock Lake! You can run, bike, chill, take your dog. It’s a Dallas gem!
zekeweasel@reddit
Lots of good lakes for water activities and fishing nearby.
There's some hiking at Mineral Wells state park, and an easy trailway as well.
TStetzer28@reddit
Lived in Dallas my whole life, you’re not wrong. There are tons of outdoor opportunities, if you know private land owner. Otherwise there is no public land and all lakes are locked in by homeowners and need a boat or kayak. Have a gf who is traveling nurse, laughed when she moved here with the expectation to ride horses and be in land of the free. Hahaha only if you own the land.
Geoffrey-Jellineck@reddit
You can do all of those things here...
pacochalk@reddit
What 2-4 hour moderate to hard hike exists around here???
Key_Astronaut7919@reddit
Cedar Hill State Patk
drunnkinpublic@reddit
Since when is that moderate to hard? It was a Sunday stroll when I did it.
supersaucer123@reddit
I gotta second that it’s a park walk and hiking is a big reason I’m leaving Texas plus you can’t really do long hikes in 110 degrees and in the winter the trees are dead so the few actually challenging hikes I have to drive far to and they can only be done in spring or fall if you want them when greenery is out
TheThreeRocketeers@reddit
I think he means cedar ridge preserve. Great hiking there.
drunnkinpublic@reddit
Still not a hard hike at all.
toodleroo@reddit
Doing it in August is Hard Mode.
ChloeDrew557@reddit
Doing anything outdoors in August is hard mode.
awkward_mallard@reddit
No lies were told.
justonemom14@reddit
A 30 minute drive away and literally not in Dallas.
Ferrari_McFly@reddit
30 minutes from Dallas? Does Oak Cliff or anything south of 30 exist 😂 it literally borders Dallas proper and there’s Cedar Ridge which mostly falls within Dallas city limits. Then there’s Big Cedar Wilderness which is also Dallas proper
PurposeUsed7066@reddit
Can’t live in Dallas without being comfortable driving at-least 45 minutes to get to where you’d rather be lol. Most of the hood stuff starts at-least 20 minutes out.
Key_Astronaut7919@reddit
It's more like five minutes and in the metro. You must be new here? Welcome to DFW.
metrodfw@reddit
Downtown to Cedar Hill State Park google says is 18 Miles and 20 Minutes, so count on at least 30-40
synchronizedfirefly@reddit
lol
Key_Astronaut7919@reddit
Too bad one city can't be all things to everyone at the same time, right?
Eagle0913@reddit
Cedar Hill is fine... It is not hiking tho
Overall_Plum_9884@reddit
I’ve joined a walking group. Walking North Dallas, that does moderate walks at least 4 days during the week and at least 1 excessive hike on the weekend. There are plenty of parks and trails if you know where to look.
Appropriate_Ad_7022@reddit
I walked all the way around white rock lake recently. Just over 3 hours without stopping.
Technical-Tea-5668@reddit
Walking on pavement with minimal elevation changes is not hiking
Appropriate_Ad_7022@reddit
How many cities can you go for a hike on mountainous terrain?
Technical-Tea-5668@reddit
In Texas? Austin.
In California, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, Montana, Arkansas, etc? Countless.
Appropriate_Ad_7022@reddit
Even in those cities, you’re looking at a 1/2hr drive to get to those trails. That’s no different to getting up to the trails near lake lewisville & ray roberts. I haven’t been here long but i’m not struggling to find ways of getting outside yet. Going to try cedar hill this weekend too.
donutgut@reddit
Those trails exist in la city limits
Sf and san diego too
synchronizedfirefly@reddit
Phoenix too (not in California obviously, just thinking of other major cities with decent hiking)
donutgut@reddit
Thats true.
Appropriate_Ad_7022@reddit
As much as i love san diego, it’s nowhere near the size of dallas & so it’s an unfair comparison. For the vast majority of people in the LA metro, there really aren’t many hiking trails that are quick & easy to get to. It’s an amazing place to be if you live up in places like pasadena, northridge & santa monica, but most people in LA don’t live there. For those south of places like inglewood, it can be a massive pain to drive up to those areas.
Technical-Tea-5668@reddit
I’m not arguing that it’s hard to get outside here, I’m just clarifying that a paved walk is by no means a hike.
Appropriate_Ad_7022@reddit
Yeah okay fair enough, agreed on that. I’m not sure why some people obsess over that though. As long as i can get out in some nice scenery & burn some calories, does it really matter if it’s technically a hike or a walk?
tauzeta@reddit
And therein lies the beauty of preferences: it matters to some people and that's totally fair and their prerogative.
Appropriate_Ad_7022@reddit
Oh absolutely, i’m totally with you on that. I just don’t think it should be a negative for anyone genuinely considering living here. Most wouldn’t move to north Texas & then get disappointed that there aren’t any easily accessible mountainous areas near the city to hike in.
tauzeta@reddit
Totally. For me, I knew what I was getting into and am completely okay with it. There was an adjustment period since I'm used to using what's on the horizon to know where I am and what direction I'm heading. No option for that in north Texas.
Thin-Career-530@reddit
Get over yourself throw 80 pounds on your back and go 12 miles I bet you won’t be complaining about the scenery then.
Soggy-Bedroom-3673@reddit
Agreed, white rock is a biking/jogging path, not a hiking trail.
Thin-Career-530@reddit
Some people can just never be satisfied, maybe some more people will go lay their lives down for freedom and that will make her hikes better, maybe instead of sitting around complaining you do something.
always-latte@reddit
Seattle and SF if you’re willing to live in a cardboard box
always-latte@reddit
I used to skate White Rock specifically because it was flat and paved. It doesn’t count as a hike, but it is a nice way to spend some time outdoors.
screamingfrommyeyes@reddit
well timing is different for everyone but cedar ridge is pretty fun, and the 12 miles of DORBA trails at cedar Hill are pretty lengthy. Even Boulder Park has a bit of elevation change.
The *hard" part of a hike in the plains is very much a choose your own adventure? is likely going to be a fair amount of flat walking through prairie grass, sure because that's the region we live in but if you bring a weight, experiment with pace, or yunno in general take a sense of responsibility for the level of effort you can still work pretty hard.
Trunk-Yeti@reddit
Tad bit farther than 4 hours, but Ouachita National Forest in Western Arkansas has some pretty good hikes.
https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/arkansas/ouachita-national-forest
beautamousmunch@reddit
Most beautiful, peaceful forest EVER by Dallas standards. Every now and then I’ll sneak out to go fishing there and stick up on their spring water. Trips help fix what Dallas has undone.
civil_beast@reddit
Shhhhh!
drewbiedoobiedoo@reddit
Agree. Quick talk about the viscous mosquitos and bugs. Unruly high schoolers out of school etc.
Trunk-Yeti@reddit
I was hesitant about posting it, but I’m tired of people saying there isn’t anything to do within driving distance 🤐
wholelattapuddin@reddit
It's a drive, but Palo Duro is definitely worth it.
Geoffrey-Jellineck@reddit
Go to any park and walk around. If by "hard hike" you mean elevation changes, yes that is naturally going to be more difficult to find in the plains geography that is much of Texas.
Soggy-Bedroom-3673@reddit
I think they mean a hiking trail. Like, an unpaved path through a wilderness area. Clearest example I can think of is the Greenbelt trail in Austin.
jadedarchitect@reddit
Cedar Ridge preserve has close to 10 miles of trails iirc
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Elevation changes would still be Cedar Hill. Hike up to Prayer Mountain.
mikeval303@reddit
Prayer Mountain is at Big Cedar, not Cedar Hill
toodleroo@reddit
A well-kept secret is Boulder Park. You can walk in there for hours.
quasi_retro@reddit
Second that, just don't get lost.
toodleroo@reddit
First time I went in, I didn’t realize how hard it was to get out!
_khanrad@reddit
Cedar Ridge Preserve
vegancreampies@reddit
Can confirm, plenty of amazing trails with a lot of elevation changes. Some of the most amazing views here too.
mikeval303@reddit
Go to Cross Timbers in Gordonville. It is gorgeous and will thrash you!
Gorgon_Savage@reddit
You must have never lived anywhere with actual public land to explore. There are no serious outdoor pursuits in TX unless it's one of the nat'l parks out west.
SkiFun123@reddit
People in Dallas don’t resonate with the scale of outdoor activity in the West. There’s outdoor stuff here, but it doesn’t compare and is just on a different level out there
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Exactly! It's absolutely on a different scale. Not even comparable. I miss my 3 hrs drive to the sand dune and just off roading for the whole afternoon! Oh shit this REALLY makes me miss where I moved from ns regretting my decision of moving here. But thats the just trade offs I gotta deal with for a bigger city like this I guess.
btkats@reddit
Maybe El Paso is more your style then
SkiFun123@reddit
You definitely could move to larger cities with outdoor options like Seattle Denver Portland SLC…. Dallas is one of the worst cities for outdoor rec in the US. We left the city 4 years ago for this exact reason.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
I got offered a few jobs all over the state, denver ( too fucking cold and isolated from any other big cities, too hipster too), Phoenix (too fucking hot, scientists saying it's gonna be not livable in 10 yrs), Florida ( emm too humid), SF ( too liberal, too expensive), Nashville (another small city), then Dallas. I just LOVE country music, and yall got all the awesome country singers coming to do concerts!
VapureTrails@reddit
You love Fort Worth!
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
A dozen people mentioned that too! Why is that though?
PurposeUsed7066@reddit
Big cowboy culture, Les’s fence, more open lands probably some good for hiking. Overall it’s definitely a better fit for what you’re looking for. Could also move closer to Oklahoma can find hood outdoor spots just a an hour or less past the Texas/Oklahoma boarder which isn’t far.
SkiFun123@reddit
I don’t know what to tell you, do you prefer outdoor recreation or country music? Any of those places would’ve been better for the outdoors.
dogpaddle@reddit
Shh, Denver already has too many people flocking to it. Let them think it’s nothing but hipsters and liberal woke minds
mikeval303@reddit
No disrespect, I'm enjoying this thread . . . but what did you expect? DFW is one of the biggest urban metroplexes in the world. Did you think there would be buffalo roaming around?
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Idk what I expected tbh. But one thing I didn't except is double my auto insurance cost in less than 6 months...........LOL Did not see that one coming!
Dr-Alec-Holland@reddit
Well to be fair it does seem like you have some more learning to do when it comes to driving in dense traffic. Not sure I would want to insure you right now either.
MightNo4003@reddit
Pro dfw strat is have your address be out of city limits so you can drive like a maniac without the insurance cost.
35goingon3@reddit
Can confirm $140/mo for a car, truck, and motorcycle.
SpoolOfYarn@reddit
probably shouldnt have wrecked your car twice then
notamyokay@reddit
If it makes you feel better.... I had three at fault wrecks in two yrs... then a fourth bc a woman filed a claim when I tapped the back of her car (I am still salty bc there wasn't damage and the first thing she said was 'my back' even tho I wasn't even going 5mph.... anyway lol) and my insurance went up 150%. They will start falling off this year thankfully..... but the insurance thing resonated lol
mikeval303@reddit
Hang in there . . . You'll find your groove
Nearby_Session1395@reddit
I always have to laugh when people make these claims of Dallas. It’s usually just Texans who’ve never gone anywhere. And yes DFW feels huge in how spread out it is. But…. https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=ranking%20of%20world%20metroplexes&tbm=&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5
mikeval303@reddit
Since you were here: https://worldpopulationreview.com/world-city-rankings/largest-city-in-the-world-by-area
I assume you saw DFW is 10th in the world in area, like I said, dumbfuck.
synchronizedfirefly@reddit
I don't think the size has anything to do with it, I think it's elevation and prioritization of outdoor space.
For instance, Austin is a large city and has much better outdoor activities than Dallas. Phoenix is bigger than Dallas and has some decent hiking very nearby. San Diego and Jacksonville also have great outdoor activities though they're kind of cheating because they're coastal. San Francisco has really good hiking very close.
Dizzy_Pack_2915@reddit
You want bison roaming around you only have to drive 2.5 hours north. Lawton Ok, Wichita Mountain Refuge
RApsych@reddit
Well we do have ppl riding horses on the side of the highways, cows and horse farms mixed in with urban homes and businesses, stupid ppl thinking they live in Texas now in a urban neighborhood, man I even saw a guy going through Starbucks drive thru on a horse a couple years ago. First for me tho and took a picture of it 🤣
KingHenryXX1@reddit
I’ve lived in Dallas for about 6-7 years of my adult lives but took a break to go to San Diego for a job for two years but am back now. It’s not the city in the same way Dallas is, but it is big and there are plenty of outdoor things to do. Same for the Bay Area or LA. I miss the mountains and the beach. You can have the city and outdoor things, just not here in Texas. I’m ok with that. Love being here, but doesn’t provide everything I need.
ChickennRamen@reddit
Perhaps give Seattle a look. It seems to have the majority of the stuff you're looking for. I moved from DFW to Seattle and stayed in Seattle for a decade before moving to LA. I love the west coast and all the amenities and I'll never move back down to the south. Different things that I prioritize and the west coast hits all of them for me. If ya moved then ya can do it again. Sometimes it takes a minute to get use to the new change of scene and build community. I've found that comparing where I was at from previous places I lived prevented me from really immersing myself, enjoying and exploring the new place.
mideon2000@reddit
Drive 5 hours west and there is monohans state park. White sand dunes out there
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yes!! Believe or not, although I've only been here for 2 months. I've made that drive twice already. And every time I pass them small town I feel like I belong there lol. 😂 Like midland, Odessa, big spring. Etc.
passwordistaco30@reddit
I’ve lived in big cities in Texas, east coast, and west. What you’re describing isn’t a big city issue. It’s a big city in an area that’s flat and hot! Try a big city out west. I go on hikes all the time. 15 min from my city apartment. You’ll find your place ❤️
saintsfan342000@reddit
Ok - if you have a 3 hr radius for finding outdoor stuff, then there's nothing to complain about. You can easily get up to the Arbuckles, down to the hill Country, and out west in that time
roomtotheater@reddit
There are hiking apps that show trails. I'd download that.
capuchin_43@reddit
No sand dunes around here, but Bridgeport is around is 1:30-2hr North and has an excellent off road rock crawling park. Oklahoma has Cross Roads which is another fun rock crawling park, roughly 3hrs. . And I'm slightly unsure, but there used to be a small off road area in Irving.
OopsAllTraffic@reddit
it's the heat. no one wants to be outside May to September/ October here
Tenpoundtrout@reddit
Why would anybody move to Dallas and expect anything close to the scale of outdoor activity that exists in the west. Like going to Montana and being pissed there’s not enough beaches.
SkiFun123@reddit
OP said they moved to Dallas because they like country music, so that tells you where their head is at…
synchronizedfirefly@reddit
Or East. Or far North
Dizzy_Pack_2915@reddit
Drive north 2 hours 45 min. To the Wichita mountains. Tons of hiking, nature, mt Scott and the coolest little town Medicine park where Bonnie and Clyde would hide out. Also Lake Lawtonka. Definitely worth checking out
roomtotheater@reddit
I didn't until I visited Portland and Seattle on a trip. Went on a long hike through tall ass trees and then it was like a 2 minute walk out of there to some breweries and restaurants.
PurposeUsed7066@reddit
Your only real problem Is moving downtown. Dallas is surrounded by so many different smaller cities that it would be impossible to find a perfect spot for your hobbies. It sounds to me like you should have headed a little more towards fort worth or towards Denton.
If you do your research there’s even private hunting grounds. We’ve been hog hunting a few times. You can download the “Texas Outdoor Annual” app for related public info and licensing.
Some neighborhoods around the area have miles upon miles of trails, and there’s some cool hiking locations in between.
My suggestion is to join some Facebook groups, and find your people.
And yes I admit. Dallas people, typically the 9-5 group don’t know how to drive. Any amount of rain will result in people being too scared to go over 40. You’ll end up with bumper to bumper traffic with no accident. A highway entryway that feeds straight into the road will also result in bumper to bumper traffic cause of all the overly cautious drivers not knowing that maintaining speed is faster, or the impolite drivers who can’t zipper merge to save they’re own lives.
The best way to drive down these roads is always fast and calculating. It’s also the only way to get anywhere on time. But I wouldn’t do that till you’re used to it. If you’re in the fast lane going the speed limit you’ll definitely get bullied out. Just maintain the speed of the car in front of you and you’ll do fine. Forcing drivers to pass you while you’re in the fast lane will add to your anxiety.
Safest place to be is the Express lane or middle lane.
The cautious drivers are equally as bad if not worse than the distracted drivers.
pizzabagel3311@reddit
Yeah no, there’s nothing lol a “true” outdoors person would see this. There’s white rock lake and some random trails here and there, but you’d have to go into Oklahoma to do any kind of “real” hiking or camping. Love Texas, hate Dallas.
pgbcs@reddit
Download the AllTrails app for hiking, dirt biking, etc. Also some outdoor gun ranges in the Carrollton area for shooting stuff. If you go east of Rockwall you’ll be in the country real quick.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yes, i do have that app, and the hikes I found were all so.... how should I put it, they are 10 "trails" in total and they are more like a walk, not a hike. Shooting indoor has too much stupid rules like no rapid firing etc, and it costs money. But I would check out the area outside of Rockwall though, thank you for your input!
ratcheting_wrench@reddit
Homie I’m a huge outdoors person like you, you unfortunately are gonna need to go to west Texas or Oklahoma or Austin to get your fix.
But, please go check out the Wichita mountains in Oklahoma, 3 hour drive but it’s beautiful country, high desert/ grasslands/ small Rocky Mountains similar to socal. Lots of beautiful wild animals like elk and bison. Fav place near dfw for outdoors stuff
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Really? Hell yea!!! Thank you so much!!! You have no idea how much I miss the mountains and the high desert!!
Bbkingml13@reddit
You mentioned you missed being able to drive 3 hours and be in the sand dunes - Austin is 3 hours away!
Some other day trips that sounds within your driving range are:
•Caddo Lake, TX/LA state line, near Jefferson, TX (3hr drive, largest Cypress forest in the world)
•Mineral Wells, TX (1.5 hr drive, hiking, camping, rock climbing)
•Turner Falls Park, Davis, OK (2 hr drive, lots of trails, a waterfall, camping, and caves)
•Broken Bow and Hochatown, OK (right around/under 3hr drive; beautiful nature and there are hiking trails)
•Ouachita National Forest, Oklahoma/Arkansas (right around 3hr drive, lots of hiking and amazing adventures through, and also go to Hot Springs, AR!)
•Wimberly, TX (3.5 hr drive in the Texas hillcountry , natural wells, natural reserves, hiking trails)
Honestly I could keep going, but I definitely think you should look at roadtrips from Dallas under 4 hrs. There’s a lot for you to see and experience in TX, LA, OK, AR. And while it’s a longer drive, don’t sleep on New Mexico!!! Carlsbad caverns, White Sands (absolutely unlike anything), lots of mountainous hiking and adventures, etc. A lot of people think of NM like it’s Arizona and all desert, but it’s more like half Arizona, half Colorado. Tons of ski towns and villages, tons of state parks, and so much to see.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
WOW! Your reply is AWESOME! I truly appreciate your efforts for giving me all these info! Wow! I guess I got lots of exploring to do!
And yes, I've made that drive to white sand twice already, close to 10 hours of drive though, I would rather just push through to 14 hours so i can be in Sedona which is absolutely what I mean when I say hiking! hahahaha.
And also, I explored A LOT of NV, and AZ, only passed by NM a few times, but never paid attention to it, maybe I should start explore NM a bit more since now that's closest desert view i will get!
Thanks again for your input!
synchronizedfirefly@reddit
Second Austin, I grew up near the Appalachians so it doesn't compare to that, but Austin definitely has some nice hilly areas and fun outdoor activities
Bbkingml13@reddit
I’m so glad this helped! We’re in Ruidoso, NM right now and it’s an affordable place to travel to with tons of outdoor adventures. Probably one of the most difficult hikes I’ve done (I haven’t done a ton of hiking though lol) was taking the lift to the top of Sierra Blanca in the /spring/summertime and hiking DOWN! But yeah, still a 9 hr drive lol.
Definitely look into some of the parks in the border states! It’s surprising how easy it is to get to some of them.
Happy exploring!!!!!
ratcheting_wrench@reddit
I grew up in north Texas and after leaving for Virginia I really missed the mountains, idk how I had never heard of them but it’s easily my favorite nature area near Dallas.
And there’s only really one proper huge mountain but the rest are big enough! Charons garden is especially beautiful.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
By any chance you know any big hills for dirt biking within 3 hrs of drive from here? The dirt biking side of me has been itching badly.
ratcheting_wrench@reddit
But in terms of hills I would look in Oklahoma or Austin
ratcheting_wrench@reddit
I grew up riding dirt bikes here. There are definitely some tracks and trails near Dallas but they’re mostly privately owned so you gotta pay. I would imagine some public land out east but not sure
CommanderSquirt@reddit
It's definitely not a 2-4 hour trek from here, but if you get a weekend or want to experience some Texas high desert I suggest the Big Bend area at least once. That and the true west Texas on the other side of the state are great escapes.

I have live here for 30 years moved here from a small rural area I understand culture shock. The traffic here now is terrible it’s butt clenching to commute anywhere around DFW. But on a positive note a close and fairly nice hike can be found north of Dallas near Wylie on Lake Lavon it’s called the Trinity Trail. The Giant Sycamore tree on the trail is in contention to be the oldest tree in Texas.

For shooting, if you want a BLM experience you are shit outta luck. You can make friends with someone who has land and shoot there or you can pay to play.
Inside range - if you’re shooting long guns, Rifle Gear (way the ass up in the Colony) is probably the best thing going. Mind you, I say that as someone who has a Vet discount for range time so that does help.
Outside range - TDSA is probably the closest to shooting on public lands, but it’s $700 a year. You do get access codes and if you want to night shoot all they do is check you out for competency before the say go for it.
B-Tac is a close second to TDSA but without a membership option. There’s also ETTS but last time I checked they had banned bi-metal, which eliminated all my AKs
There are other outdoor ranges but they do involve more driving. That’s just price of admission in Texas and something you get used to. When I lived in Phoenix, trying to get friends to drive 40 minutes across the Valley was like pulling teeth. You’d think I was asking them to abandon their lives and go on the gotdamn Oregon trail with me.
For shooting handguns, most indoor ranges are pretty similar but I do like Rifle Gear and Lake Highlands as my go to for inside action.
As for hiking, everyone here is basically wrong. Dallas has great CEMENT TRAILS, but it’s not hiking. There’s a lot of cement trails, but you’re still walking on a giant sidewalk. It’s not like hiking Camelback Mountain before work at all.
Even out in “the wilderness”, there’s just no challenge or elevation change here. You need to be up in West Texas to get real, desolate hikes.
willsimpforazula@reddit
I shoot at ETTS all the time and they don't check ammo. As long as you're not being a dumbass they generally leave you alone. I bring my AKs out to shoot there regularly and it's great.
Riflegear is okay. Not the greatest but for getting stuff zeroed, they have a 100 yd indoor range which is like the only good part. Everything else is meh (i don't care that you can draw from concealment or do gamer splits, it's still an indoor range)
SensualOilyDischarge@reddit
Duly noted, but I prefer not to blatantly ignore the range rules.
Rifle Gear will allow rapid fire and whatnot if you aren’t being wildly unsafe. One thing I do like (strictly as a nerd) is the camera at the 100 yard range. You can pull the trigger and look at the monitor and see impact
But yeah, it is indoor and that does have a certain amount of bummer-ness to it. It is my go-to for a quick zero when I swap optics or futz around with my rifle though.
willsimpforazula@reddit
Imma be real and say some of the guys who shoot at ETTS are a bigger hazard than steel case ammo. Like, some of the richochets sound realll fucking close.
The only real downside to ETTS in my book is that there really isn't enough bays for non-members, so you gots to wake up at the asscrack of dawn to secure a spot.
As for Riflegear, yeah the 100yd bay is really their only redeeming feature in my book, I've been spoiled by ETTS and the ability to shoot on the move and just having a 50/100yd bay to myself vs having to share lanes with some numbskulls who thinks running a fuck off brake, frt trigger on a shorty is a great idea.
SassySorciere@reddit
Garland Public Shooting Range is outdoor and you can keep your brass.
SensualOilyDischarge@reddit
Yeah, but they require hollow point, soft point of otherwise frangible ammo, so that ups the price if you just want to blast cheap milspec ball ammo.

No problem! Don’t get me wrong, I love Dallas with the fire of 10,000 suns but I accept it has limitations. I miss living in AZ where, when the summer was making everyone crazy, I could zip an hour and change North and be balls deep in mountains (and hippie dippey wooo if I made it to Sedona) or I could go East into mountains or south into deeper desert… Dallas doesn’t have a good analog.
It’s still a great place to be though. We have a shitload of art and culture stuff that AZ did not have. Way better food scene and way better diversity.

It'll be a bit of a drive, but Fort Worth has a lot of really nice hiking places. Mineral Wells State Park is really nice, and while I haven't been there, my coworker recommended Eagle Mountain Pass just north of FW. There should be plenty of dirt-bike and off-road areas as well, although I am not really knowledgeable about that myself. One of my former coworkers was really big on ATVs and motorcycles, and he always seemed to be able to find places to ride.

screamingfrommyeyes@reddit
any of the DORBA trails in the city are hikeable as well. there are also nearly 200 miles of urban trails that cut through the various parks in the city. they are mostly flat, because this is a relatively flat region but you can still very easily spend 10+ hours on a trail in Dallas proper with a ruck and work pretty damn hard.
Cedar ridge has some elevation changes.
As for hunting, sure you can't do that in downtown but if you think you can't drive and have a really, really good time hunting you truly must not recognize where you are. Texas is an absolute blast for hunting and fishing.
Dirt biking: there is an entire, fantastic organization called the Dallas Off-road Biking Association (DORBA referenced above) that maintains a series of really fun, often long bike paths. there are volunteers who spend a lot of time doing it.
If you have found zero outdoor activity it is because it wasn't a priority to you. Sure, this is the plains, so it is flat but there is truly plenty to do outside.
Omnibuschris@reddit
Cedar creek preserve has a 5 mile loop that is a decent hike for this area. I use it every year to train for peak hikes in CO, CA, WA etc. Good for trail running as well.
Lake Lewisville trail is pretty good as well.
cochi1280@reddit
I love the mountains and hiking but nothing here can even get close to that so I kinda stopped trying to find that in Dallas. Instead, I got into indoor rock climbing and bouldering. Movement Gym in the Design District has a great community and amazing space. I’ve met a ton of cool people there and lots of them know great places to climb outdoors too. I also try to plan at least one out of state hiking camping trip per summer.
NoCoversJustBooks@reddit
Given what you love, why did you even move to Dallas? Why not Denver or SLC?
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
I actually gave some considerations to Denver, I even stopped by to tour it. It is too far away from ANY major city. And winter is too long, there's nothing to do in the winter other than snowboarding which I dislike. I don't do winter well.
I guess I like country music way too much, and i thought dallas's got lots of country music venues, i didn't think the outdoor scene will be THIS lacking.
alpaca_obsessor@reddit
I actually thought Denver had a surprising amount of the same ‘cowboy culture’ as Texas has, just with a bit of a hipster flair to it (granted a lot have gotten priced out at this point). I also just visited a couple times this winter and fell in love with winter hiking. Even took one of my friends who hates the cold and converted him to liking winter hiking haha.
It might be isolated but I can’t say I spent any significant amount of time in Austin or Houston back when I lived in Dallas. Like tbh the smaller cities around Denver are 10x more interesting and beautiful imo.
uncomfortablesmile@reddit
Check out dorba.org, it's an off-road biking and hiking group that has created tons of trails around the city, I've found some great hikes through them. Just make sure you're yielding for bikers
christydtx@reddit
If you’re from out west, I have bad some news. Well not that bad - Cedar Ridge Preserve and Cedar Hill State Park. You can only dirt bike at the latter but I favor the former for hiking. Big Cedar Wilderness is good for bikes and hikes, mostly bikes. That’s all in Cedar Hill/SW Dallas County. Outdoors near downtown is basically Katy Trail and the Trinity River levee, I think. Sorry about that.

Mineral wells is the nearest climbing spot to dallas. The hiking is pretty ass but northshore out by fm/grapevine on lake grapevine is a nice trail for mtb and hiking, no dirtbikes though :(
twitteringcockatiels@reddit
Look for horse trails too. There's a huge one on roanoke that people will walk on as well
always-latte@reddit
You seem to come from a place where there’s actual nature, so this may not be as nice as what you’re used to, but Dallas has a pretty active off road bike and MTB community and they also do a lot of trail maintenance together.
Organization is called DORBA and their website has stuff about trails and trail maintenance.
For hiking, you’re not going to find anything here. Cedar Hill is an afternoon stroll. Your best bet will be to plan trips to places like Broken Bow and Talimena in Oklahoma and the trails in southwest and northwest Arkansas. Dallas puts you in a 3-4 hour drive of those, and it’s a gorgeous and underrated part of the country for outdoor activity. Camping there in the fall is always great.
Nearby_Session1395@reddit
Dfw is HUGE gigantic so you have to drive pretty far out either direction to find the empty areas you’re looking for, but they exist. You’ve probably already googled? There are really some beautiful lakes around here also, even some hilly neighborhoods with trees. And re:trees (and hills)… that’s what I missed most when I first moved here. I couldn’t believe that there were not trees that were so tall they formed a canopy over the streets, which was common where I grew up in the Midwest. But Oak Cliff Kessler Park and old East Dallas are the closest I could find to those beautiful neighborhoods.
wholelattapuddin@reddit
You will need to find a gun range for target shooting. There is no place in the metroplex I would feel comfortable just "shooting my gun in any direction". There are a lot of ranges though, just Google. There are a lot of state parks within an hour or so, that can give you great camping and hiking.

These are always my fav questions to answer! Hunting and target shooting you can absolutely find if you go an hour plus outside the city. Lookup DORBA trails for mountain biking, there are tons! I like the Cedar Hill and Grapevine Lake ones at the moment because when it rains they tend to dry up quickly. River Legacy trails are awesome too. We may not have mountains but definitely give our state parks a chance! Dinosaur Valley is my favorite one close to DFW, but there are tons with more extensive trails if you’re willing to take a weekend trip.

Trinity Forest Trail in the Great Trinity Forest. It's the largest urban forest in America. Nearly 17 miles long with an elevation gain of 193 ft. Lots of wildlife. Maybe bring a firearm just in case.

If you live downtown, get a bicycle. When I lived downtown I got a bike and a I rode that thing everywhere. There’s tons of bike lanes that lead to trails and vice versa around the city. One ride I did a bunch was ride to Whiterock lake from Downtown (look up Santa Fe trail), ride around the lake (10 mile loop) , then stop to get a beer or two in Deep Ellum on my way home. You can ride to Greenville avenue from downtown too, I would go via the Katy Trail a lot. Downtown to Klyde Warren park is a fun ride too. So many great rides starting from downtown tbh. It’s just a great way to explore the city.
Aggressive-Ad-522@reddit

So there isn't as much as out west but Cedar Hill would work (preserve/state park/Audubon) and there's a fair amount of mountain biking.
GarthVaderBlarts@reddit
Cedar Ridge Preserve is like twenty minutes south of downtown and it takes me several hours to do all the trails there. I can’t remember how many miles it is total but there’s decent elevation changes and views. You’re not going to have any majestic views like being up in the mountains but it’s a nice respite from the concrete shart that is DFW
RandysTegridy@reddit
Cedar Hill Park/Cedar Hill Preserve are pretty nice areas for hiking. LLELA Nature Preserve close to Lewisville is also nice.

Telling people from further west and further east that there's outdoor activities in Dallas is like telling someone looking for fine dining that there's a Golden Corral around the corner. I've lived a lot of places and visited a lot more and Dallas does not have good outdoor activities compared to essentially any other place I've ever lived.
FanngzYT@reddit
telling someone from the west there are plenty of outdoor options is a sick joke. let’s face it, we don’t have shit here. 97% of our land is privately owned
dogpaddle@reddit
It’s all comparative. I grew up near Memphis where there’s even less. There’s one good park in the city there and maybe 2 or 3 within a 2 hour drive. I’ve lived in Colorado and it was absolutely amazing, but Dallas is acceptable considering where I grew up.
2013traphouse@reddit
as someone who grew up in a very different place than dallas i can say white rock lake and a few trees doesn’t count as outdoors most of this city is concrete and i went home recently and forgot what it was like to have trees around
always-latte@reddit
There’s lots of stuff to do outside if you’ve never lived somewhere with real outdoor stuff before lmao. OP seems to come from such a place.
Our parks are lame as fuck and our lakes are shit compared to parts of the US with actual nature. Our “hikes” are lower quality than your average greenbelt in Austin/the Austin suburbs. And Texas has way less public land than other places.
Like, am I going to “hike” at cedar hill because it’s outdoors and it’s a gorgeous day out? Of course. But I’m not going to kid myself that it’s a high-quality version of an outdoor activity.
playballer@reddit
It’s also one of the few things that always get mentioned. If you live here more than a year, you’ve literally been there done that on all nature within a day trip drive of Dallas
playballer@reddit
Easy to say right now when we’re in the sweet spot of the year weather wise. Just look at the map, there is no interesting things for hundreds of miles. That’s why people say there’s no outdoorsy stuff here. We are in a prairie/Great Plains. No water, no elevations, our acclaimed urban forest is basically a swampy river basin, we are lacking some things

For the rear ending, he and him ( the car in front of me) were driving from a road to merge onto a hwy, but there was not much car on the hwy, at first we both speed up to like 45 MPH then out of nowhere he stopped for no reason........ There was no car in front of him nor merging into him, he just stopped for no reason..... So I ran into his car although I swirled right so it wasn't too bad of a damage, I damaged his right side bumper. And the second incident was because we were on a 4 lane road, so from the left to right: Left turn only, left and straight only, right and straight only, right turn only. I was stopped on the right and straight only lane waiting for green light to make a right turn when this lady drove STRAIGHT into the right side of my car on a right turn only lane.

Yeah some people do not know how to merge at all. Dallas has made me so good at predicting other drivers actions.
SgtBadManners@reddit
Being an aggressive drive at the same time you are predicting everyone is trying to kill you is the best way to drive in Texas.
zekeweasel@reddit
Best defense is a good offense?
Semper454@reddit
The first one, I mean, that’s still your fault. It doesn’t really matter why the guy stopped. You’re supposed to be prepared and with enough space to react.
Wide_Guest7422@reddit
Learn to drive defensively. Never assume the other driver is a good one.
WinifredBrooks@reddit
Also sounds like OP cut someone in the left lane off in order to pass the semi. Super dangerous and warrants a good honking. Weird to complain about the driving here when two of the “incidents” are squarely OPs fault.
TarryBuckwell@reddit
My first year here I was rear ended FOUR TIMES
flowersanschampagne@reddit
You sir, are probably the problem.
Without having information I low key want to make my own story up here.
I would probably put myself in the “more aggressive” group. Honestly, as the driving has go more aggressive I have too (like keeping up with the jones). However, I’m also aging, as I am aging my patience is so low. That’s also contributed to some of my aggressive driving.
Just the other day I was on a road and in the far right lane (minimum you must be going max the speed IMO). Anyways, I was in that far right lane and had become Sandwiched in with two semis, so I was stuck in the far right lane under the max limit. I rode him a little bit. It was night I’m sure he saw my lights. After about ten minutes I decided to honk at him (tactic I learned from another dallasite) to tell him to move. HE DID NOT. That made me angry. Within the next 3 minutes the semi to the left of me slowed down and alerted me by flashing his lights.
DO YOU KNOW HOW BADLY I WANTED TO PLAY BUMPER CARS?!?
Very often I wish I could just tap (rear end) a person because I don’t agree with their driving. However, I realize that is not safe and I’m actually a reasonable logical person. But it still doesn’t stop me from doing it.
I’ve been in dallas close to two decades. I have had one wreck. It was my fault. Blind turn out of a back alley way from my apartment to one of the most traveled roads in dallas. Got T-boned. It was my fault, but honest accident. Wrecks happen there all the time do to this 5x10 electrical box deal that blocks the view of the traffic coming at you.
Just being forthcoming- I’m not some driving saint.
But how in the world do you get read-ended that often?! Just baffles me.
I’m on the road quite frequently. I just looked at my car inspection report don’t at the end of December and I’ve already put 9,000 on my car for the year. I’m driving and seeing it, but I’m also reacting to it.
Long rant.
It’s the dumb drivers, not the aggressive ones that really bother me. Unless, it’s a sport bike riding the highway “dashed lane” at like 110.
TarryBuckwell@reddit
You have no idea how wrong you are lmao. I’m from Jersey, I have a masters in road aggression. People there do absolutely insane shit like throw shoes and pace you for miles so you can’t get into a lane out of spite. Ask me how I know. Still, Dallas is the worst place I have ever driven. Pull up a fucking chair.
1st time: hit while stopped at a parking lot exit waiting to pull out. I inched out, person on phone behind me on phone inched and gassed, just never stopped!
2nd time: hit hard on highway while stopped in traffic. Phone.
3rd time: clipped by someone making a lane change behind me, hit and run
4th time: this one is completely unhinged, not even sure if this counts. I was stopped at a light and this guy comes and stops behind me. After a minute, he just accelerates and slams into me. I look into my mirror to see if he’s ok, like maybe he’s had a stroke or heart attack or something? But no, he’s cool as a cucumber, just peeling out against my rear bumper and fishtailing. I quickly put on my emergency brake so he wouldn’t push me into the car ahead of me, and called 911. While on with 911 he backs up and slams me again, peeling out and fishtailing, maybe 5-6 more times. There’s tire smoke all around us. I was terrified and thought I was like a gang initiation mark or something. Several other people on the sidewalk also called. Then abruptly he drove off. I was stuck there for an hour waiting for police and nothing ever came of it.
Dallas’s problem is not dumb drivers or aggressive drivers- it is lack of accountability. I was pulled over for speeding 3 times back east, for going like…82. Here, anyone can go 95 and nobody will ever stop them. It takes cops hours to respond to actual emergencies and nobody is ever taken to task. It’s literally just the Wild West but with expensive cars and terrible driving infrastructure. I am not joking when I say that we are quite literally one rung below Saudi Arabia.
flowersanschampagne@reddit
O yes, I could go on with dallas PD
I’ve called after being physically attacked and assaulted. I didn’t have a phone after the attack and people who found me called from 1:00am to 8:00am multiple times. Never showed.
Recently my home was broke into and dispatch took close to two hours.
Yeah not the biggest fan of dpd.
That last one bumped attack is absolutely outrageous. Sorry you went through all these.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
I do not agree with "It’s the dumb drivers, not the aggressive ones that really bother me."
Sometime I drive on the far right lane so I am not slowing down anyone that needs to pass me. Because I am new here, and I don't want to get into car accidents, so I actively drive slower esp when the GPS telling me an exit is coming up in a mile or two. If you are hurrying, then just pass me, I'm already on the far right lane..... dude just pass me. I am not gonna move or hurry up and kill someone just because you think i am driving too slow. Esp here in Dallas the hwy are so too complicated to react on a glance without having had driven on it before.
flowersanschampagne@reddit
I haven’t even finished reading and I already just died laughing.
Words for context are everything. LEFT lane!!!
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Right lane made better since they were semi lol. Semi should never be riding the left lane.
flowersanschampagne@reddit
Unless they are truly passing. I’m more patient with them than 4 wheel vehicles.
How tight that pass much be and being responsible for that large of a vehicle and its contents. I always give them a pass. I know something that heavy can’t nor safely speed up the way a car can. But it was a ford f150 that was in front of me, semi to my right, and semi in the rear.
IMO the f150 guy should have moved, not the semi.
I understand maybe not wanting to speed, but if you’re holding up people, you’re not in the correct lane. The consequences of such a move should be dealing with having to speed for ten second or so and get to another lane to allow the traffic behind you that’s grown to all pass.
Don’t get me started on people that are in the right lane on main roads approaching a light that is turning red (like in the current state of yellow) and then NOT TURNING right. GTFOOH!!! Also, especially negative in my book during rush hour. If you see the light turning red and aren’t planning to turn right, move over!!
I’ve kind of become an ass about this too. For instance, if it’s clearly a dead intersection and can tell from the cross walk timer there is still a lot of time before the light turns green, I’ll hop into the adjacent lane and turn right on the red while they are still there. I try to only do that if I’m in a hurry. Otherwise if I’m on no time lines I don’t mind grabbing a text or changing music. Just irritating and something that has become more and more problematic.
Another rant - clearly, the driving in Dallas gets to me too! 😂 Just in many other ways than OP as I know the entire MSA inside and out (with the exception of interior residential streets), so it’s not the directions or roads that get me upset- well maybe outside of pot holes on certain streets.
PhannyPaqued@reddit
I was rear ended here twice in the span of less than a month! The first one someone in a company van ran into me on 30 when no one was stopping and we were the only cars around. He just hit me dead on while I was going 70. I was flabbergasted.
Ironman_Bolted@reddit

In some places when you put your blinker on to merge in the freeway they give you space, in some places they accelerate to close the gap and let you merge behind.
I can definitely see some instances where someone would normally just merge, and someone is closing the gap off and they’ve never seen that before. Tons of places have different driving cultures.
WuTangBatman0615@reddit
It happens, especially if you have to drive a lot. I drive a lot for work and my first year at my job, I got in 6 or 7 accidents. Every single time, I was stopped and not moving.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
And you didn't get in trouble for it? How's ur insurance doing?
WuTangBatman0615@reddit
I didn't. 1. None were my fault. I wasn't moving in any of them. 2. Most of them didn't really hurt me or my car, just little fender benders. My work car at the time was an 04 Impala with 200k-ish miles, so it wasn't worth reporting over a small bumper scratchs. Most of the people were super apologetic and made a mistake. No point in raising their rates for something so minor. The only one that involved insurance was when I took my truck to work instead, and a guy rear-ended me. I was stopped in heavy traffic on George Bush and the DNT and the guy hit me hard enough to bend the frame, knock my stereo out, and hurt my upper back. The guy had actually gotten in a 3 car wreck on 75 about 20 minutes earlier as well. That complicated everything because insurance knew about that one and thought that's why I was involved in that, not a separate incident. Guy was a dick. He never apologized or asked if I was ok. Thankfully, his insurance covered everything. No effect on mine.

I’m new to Dallas too. Been here like 4 months now. This subreddit seams to overreact on the driving at an insane level… Getting into 2 accidents within 2 months is NOT a normal “cultural” thing in Dallas… your insurance going up seems highly justified.

Seriously, all the locals talking about how Dallas has the worst driving. Just, no. Dallas has traffic and assholes for sure, but compared to pretty much every other big American city, Dallas ain’t that bad. Hell, it’s not even the worst in Texas, I’d much rather drive here than Houston or Austin!
Y’all need to get out more.

I’m from Dallas, moved away for a decade and then came back. What in the actually fuck. People here drive insane! I wonder why….
stonedladyfox@reddit
Hahaha seriously! While reading OPs complaints about driving in Dallas my first thought was of driving in Costa Rica, THAT is terrifying. Like half the people on the roads there don't even use their headlights and those roads are fuckin dark. I grew up in Dallas, and I always tell people that learning to drive as a teenager in Dallas made me a better driver, taught me to be a very attentive driver.
kingbendo@reddit
Yeah honestly Dallas traffic has seemed pretty tame to me. I grew up in the Denver area and even to this day I find that traffic is worse out there because the city hasn’t adapted to the amount of people living out there. Versus here in Dallas, sure there will be stop go traffic once in a blue moon, but almost always the traffic lasts about 10 minutes at most and then you get through it and it’s fine. In Denver it was almost a weekly occurrence to be running into traffic where you’d be sitting in park for 40 minutes to an hour.
julienal@reddit
I drove in New York. Dallas is terrible. New York is terrible by necessity. Dallas is terrible by design.
obamasrightteste@reddit
Having driven in a lot of the cities that people consider to have bad drivers, dallas has mostly pretty good drivers, just extremely aggressive. Houston has a good mix of idiots and aggros, ny is a different planet different world I do not ever want to go back. Pittsburgh was a scary town, but mostly bc the roads are intensely confusing. Miami is maybe the worst, worse than central american driving for me, bc I'm kind of expecting no rules down south, but in a large American city I was not.
Practical_Ad_9756@reddit
Houston is worse. That experience will scar you.
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Oh 100%!!! Houston makes Dallas look quaint when it comes to driving.
imboneyleavemealoney@reddit
Learned to drive in NYC and moved to Dallas later in life, though originally native to FW. Dallas is worse IMHO as you might expect NYC to be difficult so you prepare yourself mentally to be overwhelmed, Here in Dallas you never know what to expect from the traffic conditions on any given day, whereas in NY it’s at least a constant stream.
I honestly think the lockdown contributed to this effect nationwide, at least more than any other singular factor. People now drive like they act on social media and it’s no surprise to me that folks behave like lunatics from the ‘safety’ of their captain’s chair.
Verbal_Combat@reddit
It’s true, I’ve lived in both places and I almost died in traffic more often in Houston than in Dallas
Kmblu@reddit
I learned to drive in Houston, when I moved to Dallas I was like oh this is easy and there such little traffic!
Practical_Ad_9756@reddit
Yeah, everyone complains about Los Angeles traffic. I’ve driven out there and can attest — Houston is much worse.
My theory is that Houston drivers are so used to it all that they just give no fucks. For them, braking is for pussies. Everyone else sees brakes as a safety feature. Houston drivers see brakes as an obstacle to progress, or at least as an unnecessary accessory. It’s terrifying.
Txbucsfan@reddit

I think people asking what you do for work, what your parents do, etc. is a southern thing. Prior to moving to the south, as a child, I was always told not to ask people what their dad did because it might make them uncomfortable and it was impolite.
CrownedClownAg@reddit
It was a common opener when I lived in Seattle too so I think it is more of a millennial thing
Friendly-Jury-8153@reddit
Is this a woke thing or something ? Because I have lived all over and locals have always asked me “so, what brings you here ? Work ? What sort of work you do?” I could not have imagined that people get offended by getting to understand someone’s line of work. I always find it so fascinating to understand how stuff works by talking with people in a different field and never mind to share what kind of work I do. I mean if anyone wanted to, they would judge you more on your “raggedy t-shirt” than what you do for living. You know right that it doesn’t really matter how much you earn but what matters is how much money you have! You can be a broke ass Tech CEO who lost all money on bad investments and shiny cars or a driving instructor who made good financial decisions and have a decent net worth.

Bizarre. I can understand your experience driving but this seems to be your biggest concern. Dallas, it’s cosmopolitan, but seriously people like to look good; In the city. It’s different in the suburbs. You seem landed in downtown which many of us locals think of an island of sorts.
The outdoor activities, this stumps me. There are so many trails and bike paths in this city. We also have one of the largest urban parks in the US, white rock lake park covers like 1500 acres and connects to a greenbelt linking parks all the way up to Richardson. If you head south or southwest you can get lost in endless acres of the Trinity forest or cedar ridge. You have access to ample recreation downtown; via Katy trail or even Clyde Warren park. To the west you have the continental bridge park and then you can access oak cliff to the southwest.
Maybe open up your radius on foot or on a bike. You’ll be surprised what this city has to offer. Living downtown and only driving is really restrictive if you don’t know where to go or how to get there.
Suitable-Swimming363@reddit
I can say being born and raised in Texas, and now living in CA for the past 6 years - the Texan version of a hike is actually a joke lmao. In Texas, we have hills and some changes in elevation but it is nothing compared to what I’ve experienced here on the west coast. OP said they are from the west, so depending on where they are from I can understand how OP feels the outdoor life is lacking if hiking is what they are referring to.
dubstep_is_music@reddit

If you need elevation, why did you move to the downtown area of a major metropolitan area known for being flat? I mean, one of the largest suburbs of Dallas is Plano, which is literally Spanish for flat. I’m so confused by your life decisions.
IntroductionNo8738@reddit
I agree with you and the other poster. As a Texan who moved to Seattle, what we consider a hike in Dallas is laughable. There isn’t anything that will get you winded, but there are some beautiful natural areas in the Hill Country… but there is jack crap around Dallas that could even reasonably be considered a “hike”. To your other points, funny enough, even Seattle felt “small” and “slow” compared to the urban cosmopolitan pace (and crazy traffic) of Dallas.
calm--cool@reddit
If you ever get the chance to make the pilgrimage out to Big Bend, you will not be disappointed - it’s so remote, but so so worth it.

MarieOnThree@reddit
I empathize with your culture shock, but complaining about the geography of an area is sort of on you. That’s like dating someone that’s not your type physically and complaining about it. They can’t help how they look. Texas isn’t known for its hills and mountains. I come from the Great Lakes region and that’s a really hard feature to replicate. Regular sized lakes or man made lakes just don’t have the same impact. But I don’t complain about it, I just take more time to appreciate it when I’m back in that region. If hiking is that important, you should live somewhere that’s known for hiking.

Emm, I'm from the high desert, mountain range place, a walk at the Katy trail isn't gonna cut it. Because I'm so used to hikes like yosemite, grand canyon scale of hikes. Most "hikes" in Dallas that I know of are all paved and flat, so they are quite boring for me.
WinifredBrooks@reddit
What exactly did you expect when you moved to the Great Plains? Did the name not give you a hint about the physiography of the region?
It seems your issue is that you’ve moved to a new region and, instead of exploring what the region has to offer, you’re trying to replicate your experience in an entirely different region. Dallas isn’t going to be wherever the hell you came from, it isn’t supposed to be.
Also, driving here absolutely suck, but seems like you’re not too great a driver, either. The first accident was clearly your fault. Doesn’t matter if the other driver stopped short, you shouldn’t have been following so closely. THAT is why your insurance went up - you were at fault for an accident. And, sounds like you cut someone off in order to pass the semi. Completely unsafe and definitely warrants someone honking at you.
Honestly, figure out what Dallas has to offer that you like or start planning your exit plan. Nothing worse than someone moving to a new place and complaining that it isn’t like their old city/town. Go back home if home is what you want.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
And you seem like to really good at projecting what you " seem" into other people. Thank god u ain't a judge.
WinifredBrooks@reddit
I’m not projecting anything, hence my use of the word seem. I did not say you “are.” I don’t know you. Reddit is not a court of law and my response isn’t a judgment.
Super bizarre to post on Reddit and tell people they’re “projecting” for responding based on the impression your words gave. But, you blame others for your at fault accidents, so it tracks.
pratermade@reddit
Someone earlier talked about the Wichita mountains in Oklahoma which is about a 3 hour drive. I saw you mention 3 hours for the dunes so it seems fair game. I'm from that area and I've spent a lot of time exploring that area. Or you want to actually climb up some mountains, the Quartz Mountains about an hour west of there has some decent ones. Areas with and without equipment. Both places can easily take multiple days to fully explore. I totally agree about the lack of hiking trails. I have yet to find one local that scratches that itch.
warrior-of-wonky@reddit
Yeah, you ain’t gonna find shit like that here. Sorry. You could maybe go on a weekend trip to the Guadalupe mountains or Big Bend. Yeah, both are on the other side of Texas, but those are the closest to what you’re talking about.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yea for now that's all i can do for some taste of mountains. And even then they are they not high desert mountains.

The complete lack of outdoors threw me when I moved here too. I’m from a tiny town in the middle of a national forest, and it still hurts every day to not be able to go out and be in nature without driving ten hours.

Get out of uptown. It's just a bunch of 20 somethings making 30k pretending to be millionaires.
Traffic is bad everywhere because of the huge influx of people from Covid.
Try living in a suburb like Addison. Still close enough to downtown but a different vibe.
purplskylr@reddit
Your problem is that you moved to downtown Dallas and are complaining about the traffic, the way people dress fancy at the gym and no outdoor spaces. There are more chilled out places and smaller towns - it’s called the suburbs. I’m born in raised here. I’m older but would never live in downtown or close to it. I can’t stand the concrete jungle that is anything north of I-30 to Allen. We live in the suburbs in a smallish town. Love it. Traffic is great. Live on an acre in a subdivision surrounded by farmland. Wouldn’t change it for the world. Except to maybe move further out into an even smaller town with more land.
Ok_Basil_8162@reddit
Moved to DFW area a little over a year ago and while Fort Worth isn’t as “ritzy” as Dallas, god I feel the same way about the traffic and people. Don’t get me wrong, super duper nice people but maybe it’s a cultural thing that here people are a bit more invasive, I don’t think it’s malicious but yeah it can be a bit much.
Driving wise….the absolute worst and petty as fuck! I don’t get the huge gaps between cars in the city, it seems like everyone makes a full stop before turns, nobody seems to understand basic traffic law, and for gods sake use a damn blinker! They literally drive like they are the only people on the road and when you honk or try to motion, they dig in and just get worse.

Coming from Dallas to San Antonio, I also feel I've made a mistake. Everyone's different! Don't sweat it. We'll both end up in the right spot at the end of the day. The best part of Dallas is the music scene. It's one of the strongest in the country, up there with NYC and Chicago. So there will be world class live music available for free every night if you look at the right venues.
Check out Revelers, check out Steve's wine bar, check out the free man, and then there's the symphony. One of the best in the world right there on Flora st. That's just off the top of my head. There plenty more in and around Dallas. UNT being up there helps a lot

There is this thing called Google, that you can type in “outdoor things to do in Dallas” or “hiking trails dallas” or “outdoor things to do near me”. Im outside 7 days a week doing shit. HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
And your point is?
Phallendoor@reddit
So I see where you're coming from with all of these points. I will say with #2 that it's just regular small talk mostly in Dallas. For the vast majority of encounters at least. As much as Dallas emulates aspects of LA, it's not mainly to figure out status stuff, it's just to have an interesting conversation. Have you looked at some of the outer areas of Dallas? Don't know where you live right now, but I had a blast in the Carrollton/Addison area.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
I work in downtown, so I picked to live in downtown to avoid the long drive, but man i'm just not vibing with the downtown vibe.
Phallendoor@reddit
I don't think you chose poorly honestly. If you're going to live in a big city, live big. But just from the context of your post, you may actually still find a happy medium for yourself in one of the not so distant suburbs like the area I referenced. And maybe not, I think part of my plight was hoping that it can work out for you in some way. I think most of the major cities in Texas operate similarly. Downtown or at least those main areas are not always for everyone, but because of the vast area and opportunities, you may be able to find something you can work with at least.
gyromonorail@reddit

Dallas Ft Worth SMSA is going to surpass the Chicago SMSA in population in a few years and it will be the 3rd largest behind NY & LA. And collectively DFW is feeling it might and stretching to be a world class city. This will be an exciting place to be for those folks who understand how to compete in a very hot competitive market. I'm proud of my work in the formative years here, but it's now too big for me, too, and I've lived here 40 years. 1, 3, 4: these are all related to driving so I’ll do them together. Any chance you were a bad driver in a small town and got away with it for years because traffic wasn’t as bad? I grew up in a small/mid sized town. I never had an accident there or here. Drove 10 years there and been here almost 10 years now. the roads can be wonky, but it sounds like you don't know where to look having not spent much time in a city. The Traffic does suck.
2: You’re mad people want to get to know you and who you are and what you do? Heaven forbid!
5: Dallas is a vain city. I don’t know what else to say. People in that area generally dress nice, as most downtown areas. Most city centers are like this in most cities though.
6: The one I agree with you. Try going to white rock lake. It’s 9 miles around. Good for biking, walking, running, etc. Katy Trail isn’t too bad.
7: most big cities have jobs. That is why people want to move/live in them.
8: you either haven’t done your research on Chinese food here or you’re stuck in a small radius of downtown. There’s TONS of good Chinese food within a 15-20 min drive, as well as Viet, Thai, Japanese, Korean, etc. The Asian food here is fire. Dallas (and its northern suburbs) HAVE IT ALL. Unless you grew up in a small town outside of SF, I can’t imagine a small town having a plethora of Chinese food options. Stores? Bruh…. Rent is expensive. That goes for businesses. They’re either selling a ton and minimizing inventory to keep extra costs low or they’ve turned into an online warehouse. It’s 2024. Box stores have been dying since like 2016. Amazon doesn’t take 4 days to deliver your stuff. Almost anything you order shows up the next day.
It really sounds like you just did no research before coming here and have done no research since getting here. I’d really like to know why you came here in the first place?
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
You got my entire point 8 wrong...... lol I was saying the town where I came from doesn't have much options for food; and here in Dallas you guys have endless options. Same goes to the store.
And I moved here because (1) a job (2) country music (3) no state income tax

Well and you expected downtown Dallas to be outdoorsy too? I mean really? C Mon now. You gotta gtfooh with that bull shit. I bet you expected to see cowboys on horse back too eh? If that's what you wanted to see then you should've picked ft Worth funky town near Billy Bob's not downtown Dallas. If you're homesick either deal with it and get over it or move back. Too many new people coming here over populating our city cause worse traffic conditions and accidents because y'all unfamiliar with the city roads and that's just me being polite about it. Nothing personal against you my friend but if you were from here and noticed the flood of people coming from everywhere messing up everything you know then you would understand what I mean. We know when you're not from here right away we are different people with different backgrounds so if you trying to blend in then do your homework. Oh and welcome to Texas.

Aky114@reddit
When you’re passing someone especially a semi, don’t take forever. 15 seconds is way too long. Hurry up and pass them. I’m a commercial driver and one of my pet peeves is when people take forever to pass me. Our trucks tend to walk on the road because of how big the tires are. It’s not fun having cars right beside us taking 5 business days to pass. I go Mach Jesus past any commercial vehicle if passing. If one of our tires explodes next to you, it could very well be a death sentence. They become missiles and you don’t want to be next to one if it explodes. Don’t stay next to 18 wheelers and don’t take forever passing anyone. Virtually everyone will leave you alone if follow my advice. Choice is yours 💋
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Oh trust me I'm also nervous when driving right by a semi, so believe me when I say I want to pass yall as fast as MY CAR ALLOWS ME to. I drive a grand Cherokee... Not a Mustang, as much as I want to just shooooooo passing a semi like a beam of laser, my car just isn't going fast enough to blazing through like a race car does. I was already driving close to 78. It's gonna take my car a while to kick into gear. And it certainly doesn't help when the asshole behind me is riding my ass whole honking and flashing at me while ur semi is towering over me.... I'll get very sensory overloaded and I just wanna stump on brake out of survival instinct to make everything stop.
Aky114@reddit
If you need help learning how to drive in DFW, I would be more than happy to help. I’ve had to help a few friends when they moved here and now they’re just fine. Nothing wrong with asking for help. DFW is an animal when it comes to traffic compared to other places. I firmly believe if you can drive in DFW with no issues, any other city is cake walk. I actually do drive a mustang though lmfao. I drive a 2014 GT500 so it easy for me to zoom places. It sucks driving my civic as my daily because it takes 10 business days to get up to speed to pass someone.
captainn_chunk@reddit
I’m sorry OP but these are the most basic complaints that literally everyone has living in literally any large city.
Read this post again and imagine yourself 20 years from now. Your entire professional career success hangs on the balance of these specific complaints you have made here.
Did you give up and move back to your shitty little town or did you get over yourself and realize caring about what other people wear to the gym gave you a mental breakdown.
A day in NYC would leave you with diagnosable ptsd.
Maybe move like 20 minutes north of downtown and stop going to gyms and places filled with plastic people.

Are you living in the downtown area because that's where you work?
If so, maybe living north of downtown near a train station would solve the driving in downtown issues?
mideon2000@reddit
I got to ask, did you do ANY research before moving? There are millions of people in the area, you ain't finding and lonely highways. Geographically, there are no mountains in the area. Some nice hills in palo pinto, otherwise, about 7 hour drive west to see any. I don't know any city that is going to allow you to shoot your guns, you got to drive outside the city limits. And even then, you have to know someone with property. There are gun ranges though. There is one by lb houston golf course.
No mountains, flat land, not much to do if you are expecting mountain hikes. There are plenty of trails and preserve areas. Best imo is probably cedar ridge nature preserve. Plenty of nice elevation. In fact it might have some of the highest points in the area.
Driving? My suggestion is to always stay out the left lane. 15 seconds is a long ass time to pass a truck. You got to pass and get the hell out of the way unless you are flying. It sounds crazy, but it isn't polite to timidly drive in the left lane when you have people behind you.
People dress up, but nobody gives a shit about how you dress. Just don't smell.
Just some observations from a native dallas resident.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)

having lived in downtown dallas for over a year now everything you said was odd. except for all the driving related things, i don’t drive, and i don’t know why you would living in downtown.
that doesn’t really happen too often, it happens as much as any other ice-breaker. either way it’s just to get to know you, not compare status. especially in downtown everyone knows that having a certain job doesn’t mean a certain pay. nor does it having anything to do with a social circle. it’s not unique to dallas either. happened in seattle and the suburbs of seattle.
this one is the most bizarre to me. the building i’m in is fairly posh and i see people in old sweatshirts all the time. i have no clue where the hell you hang out where everyone is dressing to the nines. maybe uptown? but when i’m walking around there i definitely still see people dressing down.
yeah there isn’t anything anywhere near close to what the west coast has, but no activities is a lie. you have the katy trail, it’s pretty expansive. you don’t have to drive to it if you live downtown. people also have group activities from time to time, like a weekly bike ride around downtown. i forget what it’s called, but it’s out there.
i don’t even want to live in dfw much longer, i’d rather manhattan/brooklyn/toronto, but this post is so car-centric and weirdly inconsistent with reality that i can’t help but think you’re lying about not being from california. that’s a very california thing to do.
nihouma@reddit
Regarding the gym attire downtown, just wear what you want. While lots of people downtown do dress up, that's because there's a lot of office workers downtown. Trust me, nobody at the gym cares (or downtown really), I just put on a modal shirt and some gym shorts and workout, and I've never noticed anybody else at the gym who seem extra fancy
Unless you're going to a place with an explicit dress code, don't sweat it

I moved here 20 years ago from the west coast, and I'm moving back this summer, but #2 gave me flashbacks to when I first moved here. Not entirely. I lived in NYC for the last 20 years. With a lot of people, it’s just a conversation opener. Otherwise you’re stuck with talking about the weather
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
I mean there are many other things you can use as convo starters, the perfect question for Dallas, a mega city with lots of transplants, is that "are you local? (if not) where did you move from?" and then if u know the city then that's even better, if not then just them talk about it. There are so many things to start the convo without conducting a census survey LOL ( that's what i call it)
acorneyes@reddit
how is “where are you from” any less of a “census survey” question? which i’m asked that constantly around here anyway.
just as i was asked where are you from and what do you do for work in seattle.
maybe you notice the work question a lot more because it bothers you, so now it seems to happen a lot more than it actually does. keep an ear out for other conversation starters you might be taking for granted.
SouthernWindyTimes@reddit
Depending on what you do for work easily defines if someone wants to keep talking to you around these parts. Dallas can be pretty classist and even more so put emphasis on corporate/law type jobs. And some people who are in a higher position simply won’t consider being friends with someone at the bottom of the totem pole. It’s weird.!
d3ut1tta@reddit

I moved to Dallas from a town of 200 in Kansas in 2013. I'm more comfortable driving now and have had the opportunity to move to a smaller city but I love Dallas (most of it) because of all the different ethnicities, cultures, food. I do miss seeing fields, cows, horses! I will probably move somewhere smaller and less expensive some day though.

Traffic is not bad here at all lulz
Ppl just don’t know what real big city traffic looks like. Try LA or DC then get back to me.

Ab4739ejfriend749205@reddit
That’s all true until you find your clique of people then Dallas is fantastic as it’s really a collection of 200 cities to explore.
The highways will always be scary and avoid them at all costs except Sunday before noon.

If you want to shoot your guns in any direction just head on over to oak Cliff. ..sounds like you meant to move to fort worth
username-generica@reddit
You can’t shoot guns randomly in Fort Worth either. While the traffic isn’t on the same level as Dallas, I don’t think the OP could handle it. The Forth Worth Nature Center and Refuge does have some good hikes though.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yes, def fort worth. But i got a job here....

metrodfw@reddit
Come over to Ft Worth, all the benefits of Dallas with shopping, food, art, and lots to do cheap or free around town and the people are sooooo much more laid back. Traffic is a bit better but lots of construction going on so it can be hit or miss at times. Began working in Dallas around 1980 but never had any desire to live there. IT was enough to get a feel for how fake the people can be traffic etc.... Jobs are also plentiful just like Dallas. Honestly the two cities are truly worlds apart. Used to be pay was a ton better and I am talking upwards of 25% better in Dallas but it isn't much different these days. Oh, and a lot less one way streets! lol
ImpressionOdd1203@reddit
Yeah I agree with most of your points. Came here from Maryland last year. Shitty roads and traffic organization. Most people are strange and pretentious and don’t seem to realize it. The nature and outdoors sucks unless you travel a few hours.
tyingq@reddit
> People dress so nice in downtown. I wore raggedy t-shirt to the gym and I almost turned back and drove home... Most people in the gym dressed up like they were on a fitness date or something. So lesson learned there. Where I'm from people be wearing university hoodies and shorts to the gym.
Are you maybe near Turtle Creek / Oak Lawn? It's a predominantly gay area, and perhaps that's driving some of the gym fashion.

mrequenes@reddit
This could be any “guy from small town moves to big city with unpleasant climate (much of the time)” post. Not specific to Dallas at all.
semper-gourmanda@reddit
As a lifelong Texan we were never ones to honk and flash our lights. We tailgaited for sure. But we weren't honkers UNLESS you're sitting at a green light, and then it's a tap, or like a real strong lunge into the lane. But I'd say by the early 2000's you'd begin to hear the rare honk cause someone crept over 4 inches because they dropped their fries. You'd begin to see the flashing lights. Sitting at the green light resulted in a person laying on their horn. And it's just gone downhill from there. To the people who drive 40 on I-35 to the people who drive 90 on the Tollway, the honking, the signal-less lane changes, to no one letting you over, etc. etc. Dallas has basically become like everywhere else. It's just some big generic mess of sprawl and disgruntled people.
We'd happily go back to the way things were, but we probably can't because Texas has become 50% "the rest of the world."
GueroCochino@reddit
Please don’t judge Texas by your experiences in Dallas. Dallas, Houston and now Austin are raging dumpster fires and not true representations of the relative normalcy of Texas. Just as a test, drive west about 40 minutes to Fort Worth. I think you will find the people, traffic and overall atmosphere there is much more human.
xSGAx@reddit
I felt that. OK was way more timid. However, being in Dallas has made me vigilant on the road and I've adapted. Now, I seem to speed anywhere I drive and I don't even mean to lol
These are normal questions when you don't know anyone and you're trying to make "small-talk" convo. This seems normal to me.
i hate the traffic
agreed
it's the gym, don't let it stress you....unless you're there for a date too lol
bruh...what?! White Rock, all the bike paths around it, Spring Creek Nature Reserve (plano), and lots of other places to do stuff. This means you're just not out there. You def need to get a bike
jobs seem tough to find all around, but it depends your field. HR seems impossible these days
I grew up in small town OK, but then moved to OKC. Dallas is infinitely better than anywhere else i've lived. My suggestion is get some hobbies. If you love music, Dallas has an awesome scene (one of my fave things about it).

1 - you’re just not used to driving in dense urban areas. It’s not only Dallas. Every big city can be difficult to drive in if you’re not used to all the stuff going on. You coming from a small city is what caused this. I’d go out on a limb to say you’re probably the bad driver, poor awareness of your surroundings and slow reactions because you’re just not used to it. Not trying to be rude but I’ve driven in many places way more chaotic than Dallas.
esquirlo_espianacho@reddit
You left out 1. The strange u turn lanes (which are helpful once you figure them out) 2. The super tall overpasses and 3. People immediately asking what church you attend and trying to drag you to theirs if you say “none”

And if America ends up being the problem since you like to not take responsibility try a different country.

On Number 2, I like to ask what people do for fun. Here in Dallas it nearly always throws them for a loop. It is very weird that everyone asks what you do for work but if you run into me, I will ask what you do for fun.
RLSLLS@reddit
So as a lifelong Dallasite, if someone I just met asked me what I do for fun, my first thought is going to be “why? Why do you want to know that? Are you a stalker? What I do for fun is none of your business.” Yeah, I’m going to assume you are a stalker. 😀
But I’ll tell you about my job all day long, cause well it’s just my job, it’s not personal. We don’t believe your job is your identity, but it is part of who you are. And as someone above said, there are a million people in this city, and everyone knows everyone. So yeah we probably know your company or know or knew someone at your company.
“What do you do” is the stage 1 icebreaker in South. Well after “so where’a’you from…”
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yea.... see, the difference. I would love it if you asked me what i do for fun. I'm weird out by "what do you do for work, what company, what position?" cuz that's too personally for me. Like why u wanna know what company i work for? stalk me? lol

StarWarsPlusDrWho@reddit
I’ve been rear ended 3 times (never at fault) in the last 7 years of living in DFW, resulting in two total losses, and had two theft attempts on my car, one of which was successful. All in all I’ve found that living in DFW means my car will be in the shop for at least a month every year due to other people’s BS, so for the time being I’m choosing not to own a car. I live close enough to downtown that I can walk to most places I need, and there’s always dart/uber if I need to venture out further.
The-grave-cave-ate@reddit
Living in Dallas turned me into a shut-in. I’m not exaggerating. I literally got diagnosed with agoraphobia after living there for two years.
Honestly, it never seemed worth it to leave the house (and I worked from home) due to the traffic and the way people drive. It took forever to get anywhere.
I learned to drive in Memphis, which has some of the most aggressive drivers on earth, but there was something about the way people drive in Dallas + the constant traffic + the never ending roadwork that made me not want to interact with that city during my time there.
I still like visiting. Just don’t think it was a great place to live.

Most of what you wrote about would apply to any big city, Atlanta, Chicago but dressing up to go to the grocery store or to work out is soooo Dallas. Many singles meet or want to meet others here. Prioritizing a luxury car or discussing your luxury cars is also soooo Dallas. Asking about your job and position is also so Dallas. They want to figure out which cubbyhole to stick you in (how much you earn) and where you are in their mind’s hierarchy.
In many countries is distasteful to ask someone you just met about their profession. It doesn’t define them. Meanwhile it’s very American/Texan to assess someone starting with such a question.
Wa-da-ta-mybaby-te@reddit
Yeah dallas is one of the most corporate and competitive cities in the US. I've seen classism everywhere but you'd definitely find it there. And yeah it is the craziest driving atmosphere. Definitely a place for the "city" life.
ebal99@reddit
Move out of downtown and to one of the many other communities around the area. There is something for everyone here just have to find it. If you work downtown might consider a location close to light rail so you do not have to drive. You will also find places to shoot and do more things outside than in downtown.
dopplestranger@reddit
I moved here 5 years ago from a small town in the southeast and your experiences/feelings are very similar to mine when I first got here. It takes some time to settle and get used to it. I never felt like it wasn’t for me tho, just learned how to manage and now it’s “normal”. The roads/traffic were definitely the most shocking.
The string of accidents is unfortunate; that didn’t happen to me. My truck did get stolen twice tho lol. Id recommend driving very defensively. Like give it a few seconds after the light turns green to let the traffic clear, it’s almost common place for ppl to run a red light for the first few seconds.
Good luck, hope you eventually end up liking it here!
RScottyL@reddit
Big city living has its advantages, but also disadvantages if you are coming from a small city!
Traffic has been getting a lot worse lately because of all of the people moving to the area, and the roads can't keep up!

I have a theory - if you grew up riding bicycles on city streets, weaving in and out of traffic, learning early on how to gauge the speed and intent of traffic, etc. then city driving is a non-issue. But if you didn’t and then learn to drive as a late teenager then it is hard to ever get comfortable. Thoughts?

Might be harder to see downtown but people do dress nice here. People have money so they spend it. But there's a ton of people that don't dress nice either. I either dress and look nice with decent clothes or look like a raggedy mess because I just didn't bother. I make pretty good money. It's not like a caste thing, lot of doctors and real estate and execs and stuff and they just spend a lot of money because they can. Most of Dallas is very blended neighborhood wise (until they finish gentrifying the whole city) so one street is super nice and the next over is apartments. You get low income earners going to the same place as people with mcmansions. People are use to it and afaik don't heavily judge someone for wearing a hoodie. Honestly if amything they might assume you are in tech lol.

Signage? Awful! GPS? It often gets confused/lost giving you bad intel too late to use it.
As for things to do? I play pickup soccer when I visit Dallas...loads of meetup groups. There's also loads of disc golf--it's a disc golf mecca! If you haven't played, go to youtube, learn how to throw and understand some of the physics--and PLAY!!!

Terrible_Shake_4948@reddit
Do what you do don’t be too stand off-ish when strangers talk to you- you might come across some money, it’s just southern hospitality. I understand how you feel as a city minded person- in from San Diego but I’ve lived here most of my life and my family out here is straight cali (all my elders).
Gym wear is a phase in America but if you’re around north park, university park, highland park (off 75) yea it’s like that.
Texas traffic is what it is and they were drink when they made the roads lol kidding but I wouldn’t doubt it- E35 is DALLAS W35 is Fort Worth- it’s the only interstate in America that splits into two cities and has the same highway name/number. 35 used to be cattle drive path to Kansas. They drove cattle in Dallas and ft worth
many roads and highways in DFW are old cattle drive paths which is why they meander. Driving here has gotten WORSE with people coming from cities that do. It have as much personal transportation but someone w no license and insurance will crack your shit IN DALLAS!
DFW is suburban capital of USA. You live here to save money get they your pockets up. The benefit is that travel from here is cheap because it’s middle of America. cost of living is cheap so it can help with your entertainment budget or however you want to do your finances. It’s not a night life party city.
You have the small Dallas uptown faux city vibe and kind of the same in Forth worth. I prefer FTW— feels more authentic.
Outdoor activities or here coming from the west is a let down but you can find some stuff it’s just not as beautiful up here, you may line hill country better ( San Antonio, Austin way)
Move to the tar rant county side of things HEB (Hurst, Euless, Bedford) avoid Arlington if at all possible it’s not bad bad but compiles with it being the entertainment center of DFW it’s gonna get worse with traffic. I’d advise anywhere in northern tarrant county
Downtown Dallas is cool to visit but I wouldn’t live there. It’s not a real city city — so to pay for that mark up and not get the real city is a no go for me.
KelleyDallas@reddit
welcome to Texas. Yes most of us drive aggressive just to avoid getting rear ended. But, I agree there's so many that drive too fast. such as 90 on the Sam Rayburn every damn day. I white knuckle it. To be honest, I am thinking about giving this place for a whole year ( i am contracted in for work for a year) to vibe with it. If not I'll prob move back to mountain range states like AZ, NV, UT again. Having moved to TX made me realize how much I NEED the red dirt, the mountains, the pine trees.

Come to one of the suburbs. Less traffic, more laid back gym apparel. Less nosy neighbors.
BlackCrow1225@reddit
Man.. this is wild. It isn't this wild in Far North Dallas
CompetitiveAttempt43@reddit
I miss the desert too my friend. Been longing for it for some time now. I am blessed here but my belonging is elsewhere where the honest, hardworking people belong.
Terra88draco@reddit
Dude Covid killed texas drivers’ skills/brains. They played too much GTA and forgot in real life you don’t respawn in the last intersection.
For outside stuff in summer; drive south and do the cave tours. You get a lot of steps and it’s cool underground. My friend outside San Antonio and I have gone to several caves over the years.
And you can always shift to another town and the big city amenities without the chaos. Dallas is unfortunately expanding outward but some places aren’t so bad.
LittleChanaGirl@reddit
A few things: people move to Dallas to work, so the “where do you work” question will almost always be number 1. Get used to it. Also, to that same point, a lot of people are terrible at small talk and that’s the easiest place to start. (But if you’re at a networking event then of course this question is fine.) As far as traffic, yes! It’s terrible! Change up how you get home, when you leave, where you live (eventually). And the first rule of Dallas traffic is: 1) Don’t trust 635! And a close second is 2) Always pee before you leave work. If you can’t make it that long, you should see a doctor and have your PSA levels checked. Once you find your tribe, you’ll be good. (I like to suggest MeetUp.) And I hope you enjoy the wide variety of cuisines! You can find almost anything here.

Been there
Cute-Gear-6774@reddit
Yeah you haven’t been here long because downtown is not well maintained and people do not dress nice there. Nice would be uptown, Knox Henderson, highland village, Preston hollow, university park. Downtown is dirty and run down. Whoever let you move to downtown either wasn’t a Dallas resident or they wanted to do you dirty. It’s gross there.
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Your info is out of date, my friend.

It’s not an opinion. It’s facts. The joule is nice…you could move into the Mosaic and have your car stolen I guess?
Bishop9er@reddit
From the sound of it looks like you should have moved to Tyler or Longview instead of Dallas.
ElectricZ@reddit
Redman_Goldblend@reddit
where were u coming from before? traffic is bad but the drivers are better than out west.
StronglyHeldOpinions@reddit
Please understand the highway/tollway rules:
Right lane = speed limit
Middle lane = speed limit + 15
Left lane = unlimited
6teen5@reddit
Ummm how do I say this politely… PLEASE DO stay off the highways. Welcome to the big city neighbor. Maybe visit a park or two.
BrainRude1329@reddit
Try Austin. Totally different experience in terms of outdoors stuff.
BewilderedParsnip@reddit
What oil fields are in downtown Dallas? There aren't any oil fields anywhere in the DFW area.
Unless I have no choice whatsoever or I'm going to Austin / Houston, etc I don't take the freeway because most people drive stupid and reckless.
This makes sense if you came from a small City and you moved into a larger city but also into the downtown area, which is of course going to be more congested. You probably should have moved to the suburbs first to get used to the difference in size/population etc.
Alternative_Program@reddit
I can’t remember the last time I was honked at on the highway. You need to stay out of the left lane if this is a regular thing for you. Just being real. It seems like a lot of transplants are uncomfortable going the speed limit (at a minimum) on the highways. That’s fine, but you shouldn’t be on the highway then. If you want to drive 45-55mph stay on the frontage road.
Alternative_Program@reddit
I turned onto the DART tracks once. Which really confused me that it was paved and that that was even possible. I figured it out after a few feet and backed out but yeah. Felt like an idiot.
Bussman500@reddit
My welcome to Dallas moment was almost hitting getting in a head on collision driving on I-20 going to Arlington.
FraidyCat1212@reddit
I agree with so much in this post. I moved from the east coast and am overwhelmed by the sheer number of people and cars everywhere. Where do people go to get away from it all? I’m in the process of moving to somewhere with natural beauty and a slower pace. Life is too short to fight traffic and all the republicans.
Key-Kaleidoscope7859@reddit
Love your conclusion. I’m already looking for my next contract out of Texas soon - before the summer heat hits.
Utah, Hawaii , Cali (maybe) Alaska even. Literally anywhere but here. It’s so flat- no mountains and yes!! I miss getting fucked in the moonlight out on the beach !
FormerlyUserLFC@reddit
Outdoor activities: If you like mountain biking, check out Dorba.org.
Indoor rock climbing has a solid community here as well. That’s the best I’ve got
No_Bend8@reddit
Dallas driving is not for out of towners
lost_in_trepidation@reddit
I don't think there's any getting used to Dallas driving. There's no norm or controlled chaos, it's fairly normal traffic until some idiot decides to randomly kill you.
radiant_lamp@reddit
Lmao we don’t care about your take and don’t want you in our city. Go cry elsewhere!
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Jesus. That was rude.
radiant_lamp@reddit
We get sooo many posts in this sub about how much Dallas sucks. It gets tiring after a while
doink992000@reddit
That sounds like a great place where you're from.

I’m crying at “fitness date” it’s so true

Couldn’t be further from the truth
_GrimFandango@reddit
i have NEVER had someone honk or flash lights at me while driving...
perhaps you are going too slow because you're not used to it? Also seems like you're not used to driving somewhere with lots of people.
AnastasiaNo70@reddit
Oilfields? Those are fairly distant.
Amy city this size will have traffic and accident issues.
Number 2 is just a southern thing. Not necessarily a Dallas thing. In fact, if you think Dallasites are nosy, move to a rural area anywhere in the south. You’ll be very politely GRILLED to within an inch of your life. 🤣 (I’m from here, but I lived in Goergia and Alabama small towns in my 20s.)
cowboysmavs@reddit
The oil fields??? That’s not even close to here.
shoshana4sure@reddit
We warned you, lol. Enjoy! 😂
RookieRider@reddit
Sorry you had a rough start to your stay in Dallas. Just curious, how did you get Tboned on a freeway? They are specifically designed to avoid that kind of collisions
alexdallas_@reddit
I feel like asking what you do for work is a great way to get to know someone without asking a deeply personal questions.
Economy-Candid@reddit
Definitely from California lol
Friendly-Mousse-8822@reddit
I moved to Dallas a few months ago also coming from a small town and it’s definitely different. I say that once you’re here a little longer you might end up liking it, but I agree i miss all the same things you mentioned lol
GeorgiaBlueOwl@reddit
I’m with you on highway driving here. Yikes! People drive fast and very aggressively here. I avoid the highways completely unless I can’t get where I have to go any other way.
HighlyPossible@reddit (OP)
Yea, I've turn on the "avoid hwy" setting on my Google Maps. I just can't......
Civilengman@reddit
You rear ended someone.
longhornmike2@reddit
2 wrecks in a week, but one of them was on you. That’s on you as much as it’s on Dallas.
lapsangsouchogn@reddit
Driving is a competitive sport in Dallas. You lost some points early on, but you can make it up with a little effort.
traw2222@reddit
It took me over a year to not be “home sick” after moving to Dallas but roaming the city and meeting new people becomes fun and adventurous. The no outdoor activities is a tough one though.
mobueno@reddit
Big cities suck anywhere if you’re used to the freedom you can experience in the sticks. I work in the DFW, but I live an hour away from Dallas where I grew up and could not live in a big city.
OpenEyz2016@reddit
Welcome to the metroplex. It's not so bad, once you get used to it. Think defensive on the roads. Oh, and if this is going to be your first summer down here, YOU BETTER STAY HYDRATED.
secondsawayfromchaos@reddit
There isnt much here, I would def reconsider somewhere else asap. Its only going to get worse.
Ferrari_McFly@reddit
It’s true folks, can confirm. Not much to do in the 9th largest city and 4th largest metro.
secondsawayfromchaos@reddit
lmao besides eating or drinking, tell me how far I have to drive to see some nature that doesnt include white rock toxic waste lake
Ferrari_McFly@reddit
I knew you were one of those eating/drinking folks 😂 how about catching a concert at The Arboretum? Maybe a play or show in the Arts District? Yoga or movie nights in KWP or Griggs Park? Deep Ellum concerts, comedy shows, art galleries? Cedars or Design District art galleries? Hiking Cedar Ridge, Cedar Hill State Park, Dogwood Canyon, you know, the geographical start of the Hill Country that this state loves so much?
Some of y’all are just boring bro lol
