This should be illegal. Surely it contravenes the EU legislation?

Why are Microsoft allowed to override the default browser setting within office applications? https://i.imgur.com/S0CNNT7.png

Please take your childish responses elsewhere, they contribute nothing to this discussion about Microsoft contravening antitrust laws that came about as a result of various class action lawsuits that they lost.

Man makes fair point. I agree its a shitty practice but 'made illegal' is a somewhat overly strong reaction.

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

it was literally made illegal.

Yeah, it was, 30 years ago. Game is different now.
View on Reddit #22751997

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

it's not - that's why Apple now have to offer a default web browser selection screen on iOS to comply with local laws: https://developer.apple.com/support/browser-choice-screen/#:~:text=To%20meet%20the%20requirements%20in,opens%20Safari%20on%20their%20iPhone.

Let’s say I use multiple browsers for my day to day work (mostly because I do). Edge has all my default work credentials. Therefore, I want to open anything work related in edge. But I don’t want edge to be my default browser, that’s Firefox’s job. Chrome is the browser for parent company credentials. Why would this be illegal? It gives you choice.
View on Reddit #22750299

xxbiohazrdxx@reddit

It actively takes away your choice and forces you to jump through hoops to get it the way it was before.
View on Reddit #22750875

Tw1stedDimensions@reddit

Hoops? Lol
View on Reddit #22751579

Jumping through hoops is a saying that means a task requires many steps to complete, it is not known for being a compliment :P

I'm aware of what it means. But it's very strange for someone in this sub to say that about this process, almost seems like a gross exaggeration to try to make a point.

My technical skills have nothing to do with the fact I'm having to change a default browser for hundreds of users every few months
View on Reddit #22752503

xCharg@reddit

Weird, my technical skills were enough to set default browser once in 2018 or something and it's literally been unchanged since then with zero issues.
View on Reddit #22753149

tankerkiller125real@reddit

Microsoft Edge is also the only browser with the fancy pop out things that bring the context of the link into the browser sidebar thing. And the only one with Co-Pilot baked in if your org has that licensing.
View on Reddit #22750522

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

additional features doesn't excuse them undermining the antitrust laws
View on Reddit #22750568

Sasataf12@reddit

How is that anti-trust? If you don't want to use Edge, then you can choose to use your default browser.
View on Reddit #22752994

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

If you can't see how it undermines the legal rulings on default browsers like the majority of people in this thread are able to, I don't think my answer is going to help you.
View on Reddit #22753116

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

the default setting should be your default browser If I wanted it to default to a non-default browser, I would go out of my way to change the setting All of my credentials are in Chrome, not Edge.
View on Reddit #22750549

Eviscerated_Banana@reddit

Correct, it should. I also \*should\* be getting bedbaths from Maisie Williams but sadly just because a thing should be doesn't mean it will be.

Maisie Williams wasn't instructed by a judge to give you bedbaths - that's the difference

Why are people storing credentials in their web browsers
View on Reddit #22751541

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

because we're not all paranoid individuals and we appreciate the convenience
View on Reddit #22751589

HEONTHETOILET@reddit

I'm trying to reconcile this... so it's convenient to store your credentials in your web browser but the convenience threshold is crossed by some extra mouse clicks when the non-default browser is used. Am I understanding that correctly
View on Reddit #22751960

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

I store credentials in my browser for convenience Having to change the default browser in 2 separate locations is the opposite of convenience Clearly, as someone that likes convenience, I'm going to take issue with something that is inconvenient. It's not rocket science. Why are you here to argue? You disagree with the thread - that's fine, move the fuck on.

1Password is pretty solid. They've been around since 2006. None of their data was compromised during the Okta breach. Beyond that I don't think they've ever been breached. Personal accounts are really reasonably priced at $2.99/month; business accounts run $7.99/user/month.

View on Reddit #22753049

ImPackingMyJorts@reddit

Personally I feel that as IT professionals its our job to be "paranoid" (read: cautious) about security. Credential theft is a legitimate threat and a half decent password manager is just as convenient and a million times more secure.
View on Reddit #22752230

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

Swapping one password manager for another password manager isn't a million times more secure - go on HF and see how many people are selling bespoke tools that target all of the main players in the password manager space You're putting confidence in something that already has a huge target on it's back

Can Microsoft control what way a 3rd party browser deals with links within office documents, and how it handles credentials etc.? of course not. So it makes sense that they have created a method where they allow you to choose edge for links and resources within MS office. Your indignation at having a choice seems over the top ?
View on Reddit #22752244

anonymooseantler@reddit (OP)

> created a method where they allow you to choose I don't have an issue with this. I have an issue with them setting Edge as the default, unprompted.
View on Reddit #22752404

CyclicRate38@reddit

Then you need to get over it. Seriously, Office is their product, of course their default browser is going to be Edge.
View on Reddit #22753029

p4ttl1992@reddit

Dunno but it's fucking annoying and it constantly resets/changes with updates randomly so I get people chasing me about things opening in edge all the fucking time.

In a way it at least gives you the option but it should be set to default browser instead of their stupid Edge that people only use because they don't know what else to use or because they want to download a better browser
