Did Ford's choice to stop selling cars in North America pay off?

A few years ago, Ford announced that, except for the Mustang, they would not be selling cars in the North American market anymore. Most people I talk to think it was a bad decision, but did it/is it paying off? I'm not a market expert, but I know not everyone wants a crossover/SUV. Was this a risky move that paid off, or is Ford hurting badly due to customers turning to other brands for the cars/hatchbacks that Ford no longer offers?
