Thank you for this answer: it worked. Tow truck company didn’t respond to my service request and I would have been sitting all night without your solution.

My 08 ranger did this before. I tried checking the battery, the gas, the spark plugs, even the fuse boxes. Turns out, I only shifted into park just enough where it would lock. But not enough for park to be fully engaged into gear. This freaked me out.
