r/AskUK, Why do some people hate Nish Kumar so much?
Posted by JOLT_YT@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 78 comments
Look, I also am not really big on being overpolitical in a public place, but Nish is a funny guy! People hate his guts and then attribute their hate to his comedy, why is this?
Different_Usual_6586@reddit
On taskmaster he was just annoying, pretending to be stupid
Maleficent_Abies5316@reddit
Taskmaster made me go, oh this guy is a fucking idiot who pretends to be clever.
ashmasta27@reddit
His incessant laugh and laughing so hard at himself was unnerving.
tallcatman@reddit
See, I quite liked him on taskmaster. He was so bad it was amusing. I think he's the only contestant Greg has ever pulled aside because he was doing so badly.
Maleficent_Abies5316@reddit
Because he would’ve been better suited as an intellectual, not a comedian.
Banditofbingofame@reddit
I align with him politically but find his comedy punches down a bit/is condescending.
He's like a lite Ricky Gervais for the left.
sshiverandshake@reddit
Comparing Nish to Ricky is an insult to Ricky in my opinion.
I'm not the biggest fan of Ricky's comedy and I found his Golden Globes hosting pretty cringeworthy, but I think his writing (The Office, Extras, The Invention of Lying, After Life, etc.) is brilliant.
Nish simply doesn't have the brains or talent to write anything remotely as good. He's a stupid, talentless hack who's only bit consists of wailing 'white people' over and over again.
Foxington_the_First@reddit
After Life as an example of 'brilliant writing'. For a high-schooler, perhaps.
sshiverandshake@reddit
OK I'm happy to concede that maybe it is a bit on the nose, but can you point to anything that Nish has done which even comes close?
Go on, I'm happy to wait...
Foxington_the_First@reddit
Sorry, I missed this! You're right, I can't cite anything Nish has done that is better. I hate them both.
sshiverandshake@reddit
No need to apologise! I tend to give Ricky a pass for The Office and Extras. Extras in particular was brilliant to be honest.
Foxington_the_First@reddit
I agree that they're wonderful - it's just that their brilliance, for me, only brings into stark contrast the abysmal quality of Derek, Life on the Road and Afterlife.
Banditofbingofame@reddit
I'm talking about his style of stand up
Few-Butterfly-2703@reddit
You think Nish Kumar is in the same league as Ricky Gervais? I appreciate and acknowledge that appreciation of art is subjective but that comparison snacks of cognitive bias.
Melodic_Doughnut0@reddit
If you look at British food it's bland, just like their big schnoz comedians.
Hopeful-Wash-3881@reddit
I don't find him funny at all. He laughs at his own jokes in the hope that we will laugh along with him. Jack Black suffers from the same problem.
eastendswede1@reddit
He is just loud.
Personal-Pea-5964@reddit
Guys a wanker will rant about better more successful comedians than him because he's so bitter about the fact that he's not funny
Substantial_Spot3429@reddit
I can’t remember exactly where I saw this exchange? It might have been on Twitter, or it may have been Nish recounting in an interview… but it went something like
“People say they don’t like my Jokes, but it’s not my jokes, it’s my race they don’t like,
And the other party responded with …. “If that’s all there is to it. How come Romesh Ranganathan doesn’t attract the same level of dislike”
To which Nish replied “Oh my god, why are comparing me to another Asian comedian, that’s racist”. 🤦♂️
Absolute race baiter.
FirefighterLocal3845@reddit
I don't hate him, I just don't find him funny at all.
Zophin22@reddit
He’s like an arrogant baby. Just dull and unfunny. Got to be in my top 3 worst comedians
JOLT_YT@reddit (OP)
Above or Below David Walliams
PiemasterUK@reddit
He seems to be exhibit A of 'clappter' comedy. Basically saying things he thinks the audience agrees with to get applause rather than actually being funny.
Training-Pair-3914@reddit
Bang on
He’s playing to an audience and nothing else - in the worst way
Training-Pair-3914@reddit
He’s not funny at all. He’s lowest common denominator student style humor. The main problem being - lack of any self awareness.
Whole-Lime2551@reddit
Racist and is an absolute cancer to the stand up community. That's probably why.
Whole-Lime2551@reddit
Absolute cancer.
springheeledjack69@reddit
I mean, is there a celebrity that the UK doesn't hate?
Unfair_Original_2536@reddit
Bubble from Big Brother
One_Independence6661@reddit
he was a teacher at my old school lol
CaptainPedge@reddit
❤️
JOLT_YT@reddit (OP)
James Buckley? But yeah, I get that everyone gets hate, I just see a lot of negative things being said about Nish.
No_Success851@reddit
Plus he tried getting Gervais cancelled any comedian who tried to get another cancelled over a joke is no longer a comedian in my eyes
Necessary-Try-9387@reddit
Hate just isn't a strong enough word for him and his stand up. I could watch him being raped and not show a flicker of emotion. Ironically, that's the same expression when watching him try comedy. He is sadder than the Aids quilt.
Ok-Parsnip-9242@reddit
I find him too predictable and forced, rather than genuinely witty. Harmless, but irritating and not as clever as he believes he is, like Ed Byrne (saw his "Different Class" tour/rigid performance, then noticed he re-used exact same "craic" on panel shows for next year or so). Nish seems liked by fellow comedians he came up with though, so may be a decent guy irl.
CommonIsekaiHero@reddit
The same reason I don't like certain American comedians on the other end of the spectrum. Most of his jokes come down to im loud and white people am I right? And while some of those jokes can be pretty funny it seems like that's his whole bit.
TheNotSpecialOne@reddit
Reddit hates him, not a true representation of the real world
Shubalafic@reddit
I would have thought people outside reddit would hate him even more as reddit is generally woke
PuzzleheadedElk2039@reddit
It's just a bit out of date imo. I saw a bit of his live set at a very middle class, predominantly white festival and it was all "white people this, white people that" and his set with that particular crowd made me cringe so hard my arsehole turned inside out. I never really liked him much before but that just tipped me over, it was so weird. It was a nice open accepting, but well off crowd mainly at this festival. So equating all rich white people to being racist just kind of pissed me off. I think he's racist himself.
Adanar01@reddit
He did this exact set in a town near me then got all pissy when people weren't laughing and starting to heckle him. He basically started having an argument with half the room, then threw a strop and stormed off stage.
TopShagkerr@reddit
Loser
TopShagkerr@reddit
This is it. He's a massive racist and thinks he isn't because he targets white people.
OrdoRidiculous@reddit
Because every time I see him on TV, he's just being a massive racist and having a go at an audience he clearly hates, using punch lines a 5 year old would come up with and pretending it's comedy. That and his sanctimonious "current issue now clap please" routine gets old on the first punt.
OwineeniwO@reddit
He has an over the top laugh, is he funny?
Ok_Computer_3003@reddit
Best standup I’ve seen in many many years. So yes.
OwineeniwO@reddit
Is that saying much though?
Ok_Computer_3003@reddit
Yes. I’ve seen a lot of stand ups.
sshiverandshake@reddit
Have you seen any good ones though?
Ok_Computer_3003@reddit
Yes.
Loving the downvotes for finding someone funny. Not at all psychotic. 😂
sshiverandshake@reddit
Which comedians do you consider good though, other than Nish?
Do you find fart and poo jokes funny? I just want to understand if I'm honest, I've never met anyone in real life that finds him funny so this is fascinating.
Ok_Computer_3003@reddit
You didn’t see his show did you.
I find lots of things funny.
sshiverandshake@reddit
The Mash Report? I did see it and it was fucking awful. Clearly I'm not the only one that thinks so too, if you'd care to look at the ratings and viewer numbers.
Who else do you find funny?
OwineeniwO@reddit
He must be funny then.
Ok_Computer_3003@reddit
Well, I found him funny. Very much so. As did a lot of people in the pretty large theatre I was in at the time. I’m sure some people don’t, which is fine. There are popular stand ups I don’t love.
stack-o-logz@reddit
I agree he’s not funny and his constant comments about his/others race are tiring.
But I’ve worked with him several times and he is one of the nicest most delightful people to engage with.
PipBin@reddit
He seems to need to say his name all the time. I don’t find him funny because of that, just like I don’t find Isy Suttie funny because she has to say she’s from Matlock all the time.
CilantroShamrock@reddit
Because the Mash Report got hyped up as being best new comedy show and then ended up being pretty bad I think, it got really low ratings and got cancelled. It was quite lazy.
lyfthyco123@reddit
He’s not very funny and his material is quite dated.
EriadorsDoorstep@reddit
diversity hire
jimian30@reddit
Because I saw him live and I wondered if I could go to his parents country and say that they all smell and lived in shanty towns.
blind_disparity@reddit
I don't think he's funny, I find him cringe. But we can have different tastes, that's fine. I don't hate him though.
Discombobulationiser@reddit
He's a racist for a start and I've never really found myself liking a racist before. So I just avoid him.
Soft-Put7860@reddit
Why is he a racist?
imtheorangeycenter@reddit
Do they not? I remember one question here was about celebs and who was an arse. Someone wrote back:
"Nish Kumar, in the park having a proper loud, shouty sweary argument on the phone while he walked past me."
"He was totally in the right though."
Bug_Parking@reddit
Because he generally comes across as heavily sanctimonious.
Omega_Warlord_Reborn@reddit
I cannot fucking stand him!
But let's be relative.
It's not Mrs Brown Boys hate. Satan has a special place reserved in hell for that abomination.
osmin_og@reddit
Who?
Ok-Status-235@reddit
Because a six-year old can hear his punchlines coming. It’s such simplistic, predictable “comedy”.
Aggravating-Rip-3267@reddit
You can't just say, that you are funny \~ To be a comedian you have to be funny to at least a few people.
Ok_Computer_3003@reddit
This is very obvious and also seems to make people irrationally angry. 😂
charlie_boo@reddit
Don’t hate him, but don’t find him funny. Everything just feels fake and forced.
ButItIsMyNothing@reddit
Not funny but thinks he is.
ClassicFMOfficial@reddit
I jist don't find him funny
Mdl8922@reddit
Just don't find him funny.
Whole-Sundae-98@reddit
He's not funny
ResponsibleLeave6653@reddit
He's funny?
Hot_Air3005@reddit
He’s a solid standup. You’re right. But I understand he could be seen as dislikable to many, as he covers the liberal elite stereotype and speaks quite condescendingly. I like him though.
