Is royal purple a gimmick or does it truly have
significant advantages over other brands of motor oil?

Royal purple is crap. I worked at a machine shop building race engines for 6 years and every time an engine came in with spun camshaft bushings we asked straight away are you using royal purple. Loads of engines stud bushings with Royale purple. Stay away!
Prototype-Poor-Man@reddit
I rather think that the amount of times you saw vehicles come in with damaged engines running royal purple had a lot more to do with the fact that people who beat the crap out of their motors daily, especially those in the race community, use royal purple oil a LOT more regularly than your average consumer. It has been tested and found to be better than your standard engine in those applicable situations wherein a person is running really high RPMs pretty consistently, but that doesn't change the fact that these engines are, in fact, getting the ever living stuffing beat out of them by the people driving them. Not to mention, a lot of people cause their own engine damage by running outside of the engines parameters, such as revving beyond the limits of the parts within the engine, pushing too much boost or nitrous, or the infamous money-shift taking out the old powerhouse. There is a lot more to consider when talking about people who beat the brakes off their cars. But I, personally of course, don't think running royal purple is necessary when talking about normal people and their daily drivers, as it probably doesn't benefit them in any way under those light conditions.

Your machine guy and am mechanic and see more of difference than any other oil other than AMS Oil , especially with turbocharged vehicles. I have seen seals hold up more than that crap GTX
Gullible_Reach_9690@reddit
What would you recommend? Genuinly curious. Have a high mileage 180,000k 01 s10. It’s my cousins and hasn’t been taken the best care of. Anything specific or extra stuff I could maybe add in that may help in run better?
ChickenDickJerry@reddit
I concur, I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for my previous oil change and have nearly eliminated my oil “burning” issue.
Fearless_Wrangler659@reddit
Depends on what you are using it for. I use my car to go to work and come home. I have used pretty much every oil brand you can think of. Honestly in my 20 years of owning cars I have always used the cheapest I can find, and change my oil every 4500 miles. I even used dollar tree (college was rough on my old Scion), but I never really noticed a difference in performance on normal use. Currently my car is 160,000 young and still runs like a dream. Clean oil is more important than the brand. Royal purple would be better during High RPMs, but even if you use the cheap stuff, just change it more often.
phate_exe@reddit
Its been tested to have far higher film strength than most other synthetics (Mobil 1 isn't especially good in this regard). I'm going to run it in my new motor after I build it. I'd just rather be on the safe side of things. In a stock motor, there is no reason to use it though.
If its a motor you are going to rag the shit out of (like I am), or a motor you personally built by hand, its not a bad idea to use expensive oil.
Lumpy-Goal7817@reddit
I used it in my 98 dodge ram. I had water leaking into my oil and I had a hard time finding out why. Eventually I discovered I had cracked heads in the water ports. It was my only vehicle, so I had to use it regularly. It was bad enough that the water and oil mixed in my pan and was emulsifying, it turned white. All this time I had been using royal purple, it was expensive but worth it! I mean it took a while to find it, yet when I repaired it, flushed the engine and put royal purple back in it. That was somewhere around 80,000 miles ago and the engine is still going very strong! I believe this is because this oil works very very well.
DeaJaye@reddit
vote 1 royal purple is bullshit. It's an old argument and royal purple actually had to rescind some of their advertising because it was categorically false. I use mobil 1 in my ls1 and that holds fine revving to 6250 rpm. A friend also swears by Motul in his supercharged 2Jz supra.
jimmyjamws1108@reddit
$28 in 2025 . Was $22 6 months ago
VeterinarianNo1732@reddit
I disagree, i tried all kinds of oils and only buy most expensive oils in the past 30 years and Royal Purple XPR gave me best performance and gas mileage out of all of them including Amsoil, pennzoil platinum, castrol edge extended performance. On RP XPR all my cars run better, but its expensive unless you buy the 5 gallon drum.
CheckLow6092@reddit
I run RP in my little 2013 Nissan Juke NISMO with a 1.6L DIG turbo engine. The engine and turbo performance is top notch, especially at higher RPM's and when the turbo spools up and kicks in. At 80-90 MPH it will fly and be smooth like butter. For raw power and performance, it's hard to beat RP! 😁
1AJeremy@reddit
I have heard fellow gearheads say that their engines "seemed" smoother when running royal purple, and also heard of better gas mileage. That being said, I'd say unless you have a really, really, really nice engine, regular oil changed at normal intervals would be perfectly adequate.
goochsmooch69@reddit
Mine feels smoother and I just changed it. My chick was riding on the car and I asked her if it felt smoother and she said yes. Idk 🤷🏻♂️
VeterinarianNo1732@reddit
This is exactly what I noticed when I started using RP XPR which is the most expensive royal purple XPR it added my gas mileage by 2-3mpg and cars ran smoother and feels like it added a little bit of horsepower.
Independent_Piano938@reddit
I ended up putting it in my 3.5l accord. Turned off the vcm on that car and now it always runs on all 6 cylinders. I noticed I got better gas mileage running all 6 cylinders with royal purple oil vs running an 4 and using valvaline. Fuckin crazy

lol this comment is 13 years old dude
sskeetinshot24@reddit
Thx for pointing out how old of a post I was looking at lol
Dasmitch@reddit
Don't think I want to spend 9 bucks a quart for synthetic. I'd rather pay the ~20 for the 5 quart mobil 1 jug at walmart.
Better-Lengthiness24@reddit
In thirteen years oil has gone up +4 dollars per quart that’s crazy
ChickenDickJerry@reddit
And royal purple has gone downhill fast. Switching to Pennzoil after running RP exclusively for over 8 years completely fixed my oil “burning” issue.
Mean-Ear-3694@reddit
The frequency at which you change your oil is more important that the brand of oil you use. Obviously a cheaper oil will cost less to produce which mean either:
a.) They invented a cow that lactates great synthetic oil or
b.) They don't add nearly as many additives that help your engine.
That being said, if you change your oil every 3,000 - 5,000 miles, you should be set.
I like Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W-30 for my 2011 F150 5.0, but I'm sure any old oil will do it. She's got 280,000 miles and still going strong.
manhooknorth@reddit
Unless you are running a top fuel dragster, you probably don't need to spend $9 on a quart of oil.
As far as motors running smoother or getting better gas mileage, I really don't buy it. For better performance claims, most of the racers (dirt super late models) that I have helped use Valvoline racing straight weight. Which is not a fancy high dollar oil.
outlaw-1929@reddit
I just realized this is 14 year old thread I was going to say vr1(which is valvaline racing formula) isn't super economical anymore , and the formula has reduced the amount of zinc in it . Alot of guys are still running vr1 but they are replacing a quart with Lucas's high zinc additive
ViolinistIntrepid566@reddit
I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic paired with the Mobil 1 oil filter and haven't had any issues.
crkoehler@reddit
There are a couple different Tiers of motor oil, and Royal Purple, along with Redline (which i used when I had LS1 cars) and a couple others, are considered top-tier oils. That being said, most of us don't really have a need for this quality of oil. While they'll sure hold stronger at high-rpm applications, i sure as heck dont go running my cars at red-line all day long. For the average driver, just get whatever's on sale.
Just keep your oil clean. Oil/filter change at regular intervals and all is well. Certain synthetics can go longer intervals without oil changes (Amsoil claims 10k miles... i dont think i'd want to test that out!) But the cost of those oils $/qt it's cheaper to do two oil changes oil non-synthetic.
It's all what you feel comfortable with.

I just used RP in my rear diff. (not by choice just available nearby) I can feel smoothness in the car. It is better than the dealer's "oh we use premium so you will feel the difference" I actually do feel the difference. Will see how long it'll last but I would say it isn't just some snake oil. some dude who tests stuff (tools and such) did and by that test Ames? Ams do perform better tho...
VeterinarianNo1732@reddit
I used Amsoil engine oil and used Royal purple XPR and RP was better I just feel like all of my 8 cars ran the best on RP XPR. I will just keep using that.
Trolodrol@reddit
My car seemed very happy when I swapped out whatever quicky lube shop oil and Mighty filter with a Wix XP and some RP. I also swapped out the Amsoil Syncromesh with the Valvoline Syncromesh and the gear box is like a knife through butter
FirehawkLS1@reddit
Wix XP filters are great. I've been running wix filters in my cars for past 25 years and the XP once I switched to synthetic oil.
ccarr313@reddit
It doesn't not work.
300k on my Civic, I get purple 0w20 for it because I like overdoing shit.
cmorgan145@reddit
Same, new tacoma. I was going to go with mobile 1 because that's what toyota put in there. But at walmart and the auto parts store they have 4-6 different types of 0W-20 mobile 1. Truck.suv, high mileage, high fuel efficency, hybrid, all this crap. Royale purple just flat out says 0w-20, no BS. Went with that and will do so going forward. The price difference wasn't that much.
ccarr313@reddit
If you do it yourself, it is hardly even a price hike.
I just look for the monthly oil / filter sale and get the 5 dollar filter to go with it. Save it for when I need it.
You seem to have figured that out, too. I would never pay someone else to change my oil. Used to.
Too paranoid now. I trust myself at least.
FirehawkLS1@reddit
Came here to ressurect an ancient post. Walmart near me sells it for 33$ for a 5qt jug. My engine takes 5.5 quarts, so I always buy 2 5qt jugs. That way the next 6+ oil changes I only need to buy a single 5qt jug. I buy my wix xp filters online in 2 or 3 packs depending on what is cheaper for the each price breakdown. Last time I paid someone to do an oil change for me I temporarily lived in an apartment, and they had a zero tolerance policy for doing ANY work on your car in the parking lot. Luckily that was 19 years ago and I was only at said apartment for 7 months. I get being paranoid. I do all of my own car maintenance and repairs short of welding and engine out repairs (single car garage and I don't have a welder, an engine lift, or the space) Plus I enjoy working on my own stuff and have tons of tools to do it.
VeterinarianNo1732@reddit
I would not use 0w20 piss in any car its like water and just made for better MPG but they don't really care if you motor gets worn out after your warranty runs out on your powertrain. I would only use 5w30 nothing less full synthetic....
Trolodrol@reddit
One year after your post, but I’ve switched my 2014 civic si to the purp as well. I was running Amsoil but it’s just a hell of a lot easier to find RP near me. RP was the most expensive option at O’Reilly’s but wasn’t really much more than Mobil 1 or Castrol. People do dumber shit than spending extra on oil like buying fuel and oil additives
Turbulent_Can2174@reddit
Me too. Save cost in labor for better supplies. Better to overdo than half ass
Designer_Inspector59@reddit
So here is what I’ve noticed, 2017 Chevy camaro 3.6l lgx v6, regular 5k oil changes and new filter every change: castrol 17-18 Mpg, Rotella 17-19 Mpg, Mobile1 18-20 Mpg, Royal Purple 20-22 Mpg. These were all run in my car for at least 5k miles. Royal purple has given me the best mileage and a nice engine smoothness. I have also noticed that the engine is cleaner using RP.
Tattoo_steelhauler@reddit
Royal purple is in fact better oil then most . But you don’t have to take my word for it just google the testing results. It has more protection film then most oils it’s runs cooler then most oils and last longer then most oils. Amsoil redline also are high performance oils. Mobile 1 is not as good but decent then u have ur penz Castrol etc that are just regular oils. Unless u have a blower of some sort pushing big power moble 1 is your best bag for ur buck . If u have big power I recommend royal purple it’s what I run in my 1000 hp car

Doubt it's a gimmick, rather they're just doing what everyone else does and claim their product is the best.
Fit-Yak-4535@reddit
You mean like a gimmick? Lmao 😂🥴
