300-500 is still significant. Since Google maps let's you use there maps as long as you don't profit off them maybe we should just crowdsource a trucker Google maps. Surely the coding wouldn't be that hard and then everyone can update their local roads for weight/height/truck restrictions.

it's not that Google couldn't do it, they don't want to for liability reasons. A car makes a wrong turn because of google, its not that big of a deal as long as you are a driver with common sense to not turn onto a one way or something. A wrong turn with a semi could result in thousands of dollars in damages and or tow fees if he can't get back out of where he is and God forbid they hit a bridge or something because they followed a gps.

Would google be any more liable than Garmin or Rand McNally? I don’t see how a GPS company can be liable for user error. A GPS is a tool and used as a suggestion. Relying solely on any GPS is just bad pre planning but I’m sure you know all this. Any mistake taken by a driver due to following a GPS is 100% driver error. Not like the GPS forced someone to take the wrong route or forced them to hit something.

there has been cases where people have sued and won against GPS companies because the GPS told them to turn onto a one way the wrong way or take a street that ended onto a dead end resulting in them going off the road. most of those cases were drivers driving at night and so on and so on... the GPS manufacturers have gotten a bit smarter about their user agreement since most of those cases, but none the less, if there's a good enough lawyer, there's a big enough loophole! lol. I also think it's about all the extra data they would have to manage. With a car GPS, it's pretty straightforward, with good trucking ones you can put custom truck dimensions in, whether your hauling hazmat and all kinds of neat features. Yes this also leans on the GPS is not perfect even an actual trucking one so you still have to use your brain. So ultimately I believe it's just more hassle than it's worth for google between extra data and possible legal crap.

Have you not seen the average driver? Death by GPS is/was a thing.

Im a google beta tester and I can confirm that google is working on a vehicle specific maps update for 2025 that will let you program height, length, weight and hazmat information into maps….much like garmin… It has taken so long to roll out because the ground view cars haven’t driven every road yet…it will be complet in first quarter of 25

It’s not even a bad price you’ll have that device for 6+ years anyway.

Not a bad price? What are you talking about? It’s $200 over retail.
View on Reddit #22215630

TallInterview7942@reddit

It is overly priced but the investment will be worth it.

K, I’ll sell you a share of Apple today for $350. It’s overpriced but worth the investment.

Is it a necessity, do you need it immediately, and is it not available elsewhere? If the answer to all three is yes, then it's price gouging. Otherwise it's a higher price because it's more convenient to get it now where you already are, rather than wait for it at home where you order it at a much better price.

palebd@reddit

Not to mention truck stops bear higher operating costs with the bigger parking lots, garbage collection, pickup up after us truck drivers, larger property taxes.

Really doesn't matter the reasoning or their business model, although I do agree with you and I know there really isn't much profit in fuel at the retail level. The bottom line is, they're free to charge what the market will pay. 7-11 on the corner charges more for a candy bar than Walmart. Feel free to drive all the way to Walmart, park in the huge parking lot, walk 800-1000 feet into the store, find the candy aisle, grab a king size Snickers bar for $2.23, wait in the check out line, pay for your candy bar, walk all the way back to your car, then drive all the way home. OR... for just a 38% markup, $3.09, you can get one at a 7-11 and be in and out and back home in just a few minutes.

Precisely.

This. Selling bottled water fater a hurricane for $20 a bottle is pruce gouging. Selling a bottle of water at a gas station for $300 in a non-emergency is not price gouging.

How does this compare with trucker path?
View on Reddit #22193874

Suicidal_Baby@reddit

it just overlays restrictions on google maps. it does use a ton of data, but you can prune it. it does have pins for stops and stations. no ads. multiple options for routes.

Price gouging. It goes for anywhere between 300-500 on Amazon.

This 4 year old model from Rand McNally has a suggested retail price of $429. Why a store would try to sell a GPS at a $200 markup from msrp is anybodies guess.

DIRTY SECRET: Google Maps works JUST FINE, often times better. Just double check your final miles with a dose of common sense and read reviews for destinations you will usually get someone telling you the "best" way into a weird spot.. 6 years in.. just fine.
View on Reddit #22167132

robexib@reddit

Eh, depends on where you are and where you're going. I wouldn't use Google to get a semi around in NYC, but it'd probably be fine in, say, Green Bay.
View on Reddit #22168932

teb1987@reddit

Yeah that's what most people throw but truck GPSs struggle with NYC too from my understanding.. and usually if you're IN NYC, that's probably in the "final miles" category..
View on Reddit #22172616

Largofarburn@reddit

Man if I was going to nyc or anywhere similar I would want a truck approved route either from my dispatch or the receiver. And I’d still dry run it on street view.

Which store is it? TA/petto are selling Garmin GPSs at retail price. This one isn’t according to their [website](https://store.randmcnally.com/tnd-750-truck-gps.html) $200 higher than retail price…
