Improve my coin collection. It’s something I’ve always loved and spare cash to add to that would be awesome. Something I can’t always do

What's your fav coin that you have? What coin would you get?
View on Reddit #24273316

buncorbust@reddit

Favourite coin of current circulation is the Newton 50p as that was the most current coin released when I went to the royal mint and got to strike one myself so that’s a bit special for me. Favourite old coin is a Gothic godless Florin but I don’t own one yet so a really nice example of one of them would be my go to coin with the money.

Yeah that's a good shout, I awanted a bean to cup machine for ages but can't afford, so I'm stuck with my nespresso pod machine that I scored off FB Marketplace for a tenner, and regularly hunting down cheap, past-their-best pods in bulk from the likes of approved foods, clearance bargains xl etc. Still better than instant...
View on Reddit #22117113

DeifniteProfessional@reddit

cafetiere and some decent ground coffee is a solid middle ground for me. Whittards if you've got the spare cash, or Tesco Finest if not. You don't quite get the same airyness to it though, which I think is part of the charm with espresso. Still, would rather that to paying £30 for a piece of shit plastic Aeropress
View on Reddit #22125320

RealMover@reddit

The aeropress is fantastic - not sure why you're so dismissive of it. Made of robust, food safe plastic that is very durable so withstands wear & tear. Very portable and makes fantastic coffee with the versatility of using either paper or metal filtration. It's a genuine icon within the coffee community, people swear by it and it has its own international competition.
View on Reddit #22131503

ClingerOn@reddit

No point arguing with someone who thinks Whittards is the ‘good’ coffee.
View on Reddit #22160906

RealMover@reddit

True, you can actually find much better quality coffee in the supermarket from Union, Roastworks etc. There's even some own brand stuff that's better than Whittards. I always thought they were a tea specialist anyway!
View on Reddit #22165808

DeifniteProfessional@reddit

Because it's £35 but it feels so cheap that if I didn't know what one was, I would genuinely throw it away believing it was part of a bigger, missing product
View on Reddit #22140009

RealMover@reddit

Never heard that criticism of it before. It's designed with hard-wearing plastic so it's durable enough to withstand the force you use to brew with it and transport it without it being too heavy to do so. They've never made it from glass or metal for that reason. It's also similarly priced to other manual brewers, and while it increased by £5 recently I'd still argue it's the best value proposition alongside the V60. You can brew french-press-style coffee in an aero press, quicker, and with less cleanup. You can make bright paper-filtered brews, or even concentrated espresso-style shots. I wouldn't look to throw one away if you haven't even tried it.

Yeah... Trouble is, I keep my coffee machine in my home office so that I can dispense coffee while I work. Constantly getting up and going downstairs to boil the kettle, empty the grounds, clean the thing, just isn't going to work for me I'm afraid

Get yourself an aeropress or a v60 and a half decent hand grinder, then buy whole beans from a local roaster. I pissed around with pod machines for way too long. They're quick and convenient, but no where close to a cup made with a decent freshly ground bean

Check out Delonghi outlet on ebay. They sell refurbished ones and you can usually use the 10%/15%/20% offers that ebay do semi-regularly there to get the cheaper ones for around £150. I've had the ESAM 2800 for a few years now, it was a brilliant purchase. Some of their more expensive ones have the same internals but you pay more for the shiny metal exterior instead of plastic or a few extra functions. If you're only having espresso and americanos though, the model I have is all you need.

This, paired with my Delobghi EC680 (£150 John Lewis sale) has kept me in decent coffee for years. Not integrated, but both are compact, don't really take up any more worktop space combined than a lot of integrated machines. You're probably the same, but there's no way I could go back to not having a real coffee machine now.

We have a similar mindset in that way, I get joy out of giving - it was drummed into me growing up in my religion (Islam) albeit I don't practice anymore and am westernised, drink etc. I appreciate how fortunate I am, being content with what you've got makes you the happiest! I have that perspective thus the question. I didn't have anything, once upon a time. I remember I wore a hole in my black shoes walking 45mins each way to work everyday as I couldn't afford bus fare. Then, I couldn't afford new shoes so used to use black tape the hole on the bottom. If it rained I'd take spare socks. Now I'm comfortable, I can give back, the £500 in question was to treat myself out of a 7.5k bonus but still felt guilty spending that much in one go on myself so was looking for ideas!

Yeah it’s crazy how it scales down the more you buy with drugs. Back in my ket addicted days, it was £20 a gram. (Think it’s about £40 these days, this was over a decade ago) and £60 got you 3.5g. It got to the point where I was doing so much that my small time dealer would go halves with me on bigger amounts as it saved her money to make more and didn’t lose out too much selling to me at “retail”. I was doing 30g a week at £8 a gram due to the quantity I was buying. Was so cheap. Also the worst years of my life. So glad I got clean.

Most slicers are free, Autodesk is free for hobbyists, PLA is like £15 a kilo and goes a long way, spare nozzles and if needed bowden tubing is cheap but most printers have been direct drive for a long time. The most expensive bit is when you have one printer you'll want another one.

View on Reddit #22117476

LanguidVirago@reddit

You buy a 3d printer to make things, you need consumables to make things, I have 8 different types of resin, boxes of gloves, cleaning solution, tools for deburring tools and a few upgrades. Easily £500 quid, I can start walking to Spain for 10 quid, a couple of maps and what clothes I have, that doesn't mean people only spend that. You can get started playing golf with a ball and a 5 iron. Doesn't mean that is all people will need to play golf. I think £500 is a reasonably total budget for a complet set up suitable to make stuff. I never said you couldn't get started cheaper. But you will always wanting to be adding more until you have spent £500 ish.
View on Reddit #22119217

Same-Literature1556@reddit

Yea I agree with you that you could quite easily spend that, but you can just get started with a few rolls of cheap filament whilst you’re still getting your bearings. And also on olio and apps like that people sometimes give away useful stuff for free.

I felt the same, fancied skydiving, had a bit of spare cash, luckily my parents lived next to one of the best schools in the world. It cost me £550 for a week's course, 20 free fall jumps over 2 weeks, with a hefty discount for being local. It is rare things work out so easily.
View on Reddit #22116935

Same-Literature1556@reddit

That’s surprisingly reasonable. Do you know how much it would be without the locals discount?
View on Reddit #22117505

Blackintosh@reddit

The AFF course generally ends up a little more than £1000 in most places in the UK I think. If I remember right It's 8 or 10 jumps with progression to doing it totally solo. Then you have to do (I think) 10 more consolidation jumps which are about £30 each for the flight ticket and whatever the hire cost is for the rig. After that, so I've heard, your bank account will never know peace again. Skydiving isn't as expensive as people think to start, but it's expensive to do it as often as most skydivers want to.
View on Reddit #22118133

Dear-Door-6762@reddit

7/8 jumps with a hop n pop , then ten consolidation jumps. My local DZ is 3 hours and a ferry journey away, so I only did levels 1-3. (Four jumps, failed lvl 3 twice). Now life is in the way and am getting a mortage but I’d love to get my A-license one day

View on Reddit #22138284

LanguidVirago@reddit

I guess 10% less. They have, or had, i haven't been in a while, a free to use campsite, a couple of cabins that I thought were shockingly cheap to rent. Quite a few regulars used to leave caravans there year round. Then the facilities were all free to use too; pool, climbing wall, movie room, tennis court etc, plenty to do on a rainy or cloudy day. Bouloc in France. It was quite a while ago, I expect prices to be much higher.
View on Reddit #22117768

Same-Literature1556@reddit

That’s not bad at all, sounds like a great place. Definitely looking this up as often not too far from Bouloc! Thanks for the tip
View on Reddit #22118051

That’s a bargain! AFF courses nowadays range from around £1250-£2500 depending on where you jump, how often you have to repeat a jump etc

It’s the best purchase I’ve ever made on a happiness to cost ratio. It keeps my place tidy, it motivates me to keep the place tidy, and it saves me a lot of time. Cleaning gets done while I’m at work. I’ll say though, I do live in a flat so it can clean the whole place, and if you live in a 2 story house, it’s half as effective .

You can even fit in a hotel, pub, food and a trip to the club shop and still be under £500. No idea how much hospitality is at Liverpool but I assume it's a lot. Looking at other clubs around me, Everton starts from £250 and Burnley £120. So even hospitality can be done for £500 and under.

I ask myself what I have in my live that is tired, dated or in need of an upgrade; and replace that. I don't need MORE stuff in my life, I need the stuff I already have to be better. Last year, I got a 3.5K 'refund' (money I would have had anyway if there was no issue) from E.ON after taking them to the ombudsman but it arrived as a big payment so felt like winning I spent 2K on a Herman Miller Aeroon chair, something I would never normally consider but figured I had the money available to blow on something expensive, and the rest went into savings. Recently remembered I had ~£200 of M&S gift vouchers due to expire in the next few months. Bought a new dressing gown and completely new bedding (sheets, covers, duvet, pillows). It sounds boring as fuck, but the day to day QOL improvement they bring is noticable.

By coincidence, I won £250 last night on the Set for Life (4 numbers + lifeball). I am spending: 1. £80 on a meal with my Mrs tonight for the sake of it. 2. £60 on a good bottle of Scotch, to take the edge off of having been 1 number away from retirement. 3. I banged £20 on the EuroMillions tonight for giggles against my usual beliefs. (I never play more than one ticket normally, 1 ticket means you've a minute chance to win it all and vitally, can daydream about waking up one day to having no worries, buying any more means you don't understand the statistics of a few extra tickets vs \~168,000,000 to 1 (odds) not being improved by spending £10 more to make it 168,000,000 to 5) 4. I am going to spend £40 frivolously on restocking my favourite guitar picks, so I won't need to think about buying another one until at least 2034, 5. I gave £50 to the local charity kitchen that does free meals for people in the CoL crisis down the road when I went to buy some milk on a whim. I know charity is best kept secret, but this is Reddit I am hardly going to get a PR boost, but it did feel lovely to be able to do.

If I won £500 it would realistically most likely just go to regular expenses/savings. But outside of that I'd probably use it on or towards a flight somewhere? Cost of long haul international flights are a lot more than they used to be, so it would probably cover most or half a return flight. Either that or put it towards camera gear.

Depending when I win this I'd go down one of these routes: 1. Win in the next few months: I'd have enough money to repair and convert my old touring bike. It needs new dropouts and as it's showing it's age I also want to get it sandblasted and repainted silver. I'll then fit a red saddle & bar tape, convert it to a single speed or 1x and use it as my around town bike for popping out to the cafe or to see local friends. It'll be a fitting retirement for it. 2. Win in the next couple of years: I'm saving up to give paragliding a try, so £500 would either pay for one of the courses or go towards the cost of a wing and equipment if I like it enough to take up as a proper hobby. 3. Win later: I'd spend it on books. Some big history ones, but also one or two that are a bit more experimental to my usual tastes, maybe on art or architecture or similar - then there's no real loss of it's not for me.

I would probably use it for some tattoos if I hypothetically wasn’t allowed to save it or invest it. Or maybe put it towards an all-inclusive somewhere. Can I just say OP, I like this question. It’s on my list. Not sure where I would want to go. I’ve never done an all-inclusive before. But I feel like after many years of no holidays, one where I didn’t have to do ANYTHING would be very nice.
View on Reddit #22118706

bazzanoid@reddit

>Not sure where I would want to go. This is a fairly straightforward thing to narrow down, although at first it can be daunting: When do you want to go, and what temperature do you want on holiday? Immediately reduces your country options Then you need to think about what you want to do when you're there. Do nothing except sunbathe and read some books? A beach location Like nature? Somewhere like Gran Canaria, where you can cheaply all inclusive near the beach and the island has multiple ecosystems within a short distance Like to be active? Somewhere like one of the Spanish coast towns near Port Aventura or Terra Mitica Etc etc A lot of people make the mistake of looking for a location before figuring out what they actually want to do - look for your activities first then find locations that offer it nearby, you're guaranteed a better holiday because you're putting experience and memories before location
View on Reddit #22119308

StardewObsessive@reddit

That is brilliant advice. Thank you so much for taking the time to write that. I didn’t know Gran Canaria had interesting ecosystems!
View on Reddit #22119355

bazzanoid@reddit

I didn't either. One of my colleagues goes there regularly in winter for a week to do nothing at an all inclusive beach hotel. How much is a taxi?! Is it that it's in the middle of nowhere?
View on Reddit #22119400

Crab-Turbulent@reddit

It’s £260 quoted from where I live. It would be annoying to get a train because I’ll need a taxi to the train station as I’m in a village and the bus times are horrible on Saturdays. Then you need a taxi from the train station to the venue and people said the price is either inflated or they outright refuse to drive there. I’ve had taxi drivers refuse to drive to my village and pick me up so I believe it 😭 it’s much easier to get a local taxi and get dropped off directly. I’ll also need a taxi on the way back home from the train station as the last bus is at 5pm.

See if you have an outlet type place near you - we have a whirlpool factory nearby and they have appliances for sale for below RRP because of some sort of quality issue. My partner picked up a Kitchenaid because it had a tiny blemish in the paint that you can barely see. It wasn’t masses off, but I think more than you ever seen them on sale for. I read a statistician saying how - rathre than play the lottery every week (I never play the lottery), you should buy all you lottery tickets on a single week for the whole year, and your odds of winning are greatly improved. So one year, after getting some burthday money and having no idea what to spend it on, I decided to put it to the test. I bought 52 lucky dips on a single draw. I managed to not even get a single number, which I think statistically is even less likely than not winning anything. Lucky me!

Some bits I need for my car. Namely 2 new tyres (£190), 2 new rear suspension arms (~£75-£80), then a small fee to a mate to fit the tyres, then however much ATS charge for a 4 wheel alignment because that's miles out (I think around £90). Then with the remainder, I'd try and find a second-hand working aircon compressor, although that may go over the £500 mark.
