Three incidents all with good outcomes, good news. But three incidents back-to back-to back is not a good look. I would not want to be United's PR head at the moment.
I do find it funny how buttoned up aviation is compared to everyone else. The automobile industry will have failures that cause thousands of vehicles to accelerate into walls killing everyone inside, and they just pay a fine and move onto the next model.
Nope
> February 8, 2011 – US: NASA and NHTSA inquiry reveals that there were no electronic faults in Toyota cars that would have caused acceleration issues. However, accelerator pedal entrapments remain a problem.

No, I'm going to argue that it is largely user error due to inappropriate use or maintenance of floor mats.
Floor mats weren't an issue until 80+ year olds needed to invent an excuse for their shitty driving.
Totally fair to say that there was a large amount of user error involved, however having to recall millions of vehicles and paying out large fines for not reporting to regulators still seems like a bit of a failure.
Then don't look at their job fairs because that the only thing they care about and what they promote. If it hurts your feelings then so be it, but I'm not the one who pushing it, that's from United themselves
Ah yes keep the blatantly racist conspiracy theory running moron. And while your at it, keep ignoring the fact that aviation was significantly more dangerous and deadly before these "DEI" policies you people keep getting triggered about were in place.
Can't understand that? Maybe I should be the one getting you the coloring book to connect the dots, but I'll make sure to not have any black or brown crayons as you might get triggered by them. Idiot.
Show me the statistics of collapsing landing gears tires coming off and doors blowing out mid flight in just a 1 year period that surpass this. You can't because you're too busy about pushing forth a false agenda and lies that aren't based upon reality. Your feelings is why the public suffer.
Again, there's is nothing but circumstantial "proof" tying these things together. Not even the NTSB knows the cause of the incident yet, but here you people are shouting "DEI" like its the one and only cause for this.
If you make an acusation like this, then SHOW THE PROOF OR STAY QUIET.
And please explain why air travel had a SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER ACCIDENT rate for decacdes before DEI was even a thing.
Is it just me or does it feel like we're going to be actually dealing with a full-fledged crash unless Congress or these companies do something about safety
This is mostly just an increase in reporting, not an increase in incidents. It's good that airlines and manufacturers are going over their procedures and it's good that there's some scrutiny, but at the same time, this is mostly analogous to how we suddenly heard about every minor train derailment after the East Palestine incident, even though they were happening before that too and nobody was bothering to report on them.
Here's a list of how often minor stuff like this happens, for reference:
https://avherald.com/
Can’t remember the last time I heard about a train derailment on the news. This news cycle will die out, replaced by something else that will get as many eyes on as much advertising as possible.
Rudder stuck issue on Max
Engine limit surge 739
Wheel fell off 777
Aborted take off main cabin door light went off 739
Runway excursion Max
hydraulic failure A320
Engine failure 757
“Owned” is a bit of a misnomer. Almost every plane that’s owned has a mortgage against it.
When I was working on Alaska Airlines 737-200s in their dying days they were still mortgaged to Wells Fargo.
These people are so dumb they'll claim the UA 777 incident was caused by the fact the wheel that fell off had a black tire attached to it, hence DEI. To them it wouldn't have happened if the tire was white.
This shit is up there with the COVID 5G and 15 minute city conspiracies, all based on incomprehensible levels of ignorance and stupidity.
Complete hydraulic failure in an A320? That's sporty.
The odds of all three systems failing are huge. I wonder if only one system/pump failed, but the news got the info wrong.
The article says that down at the bottom. It says (paraphrased) preliminary reports indicate 1 of 3 redundant systems failed.
Which makes more sense. 3 system failure would put them in manual backup with basically trim as the primary flight control. Also flaps would not be extended so you are landing with trim at 170 kts lol.
My memory/understanding is that the A320 is strictly fly by wire so no control with total loss of hydraulic systems. Only option is differential thrust but that would be rather iffy !!!
All the B737 that I worked on had a mechanical reversion for ailerons and elevators so they would be OK except for loss of spoilers & rudder. Rudder had a separate standby hyd system.
Long time since I went to school and worked on it but I recall cables that go to the hydraulic actuator but still need hydraulic power to move the rudder.
Yes, I remember they had a hard over rudder deflection that was eventually traced to the rudder actuator. Not clear on the fix but seem to remember changing or adding filters account of suspected 'debris'. Going by memory here.
You do get mechanical stab trim, so that's something. Rudder needs at least some hydraulic, but can still be used with complete computer/electrical failure too, at least until the newer neos that ditch that.
You are correct- there would only be differential thrust available as the A320's rudder requires at least 1 of 3 hydraulic systems to be operational to function. The loss of all 3 hydraulic systems in the A320 are so remote pilots are not trained for this eventuality.
how do they achieve manual backup with fly by wire? is there a way to establish direct mechanical connection to trim tabs? or do only the trim tabs have direct linkage to the stick (or trim wheel)?
The A320 is uncontrollable except with differential thrust in case of a total hydraulic failure. Mechanical backup, where there is the use of rudder and trim, still requires at least 1 hydraulic system (out of 3) to be operational.
Since the chance of a total hydraulic failure is so remote pilots are not trained for such an eventuality.
Huh, the A320 has a mechanical backup if hydraulics failed? Didn’t know that considering the A300 doesn’t to my knowledge (an A300 once landed after a total hydraulics failure due to being hit by a missile and they did it United 232 style using differential engine thrust.
If the green system fails on the 320 you have to gravity drop the gear. Also on the classics (this case) you only have accumulator pressure for braking and lose nose wheel steering.
Pretty clear they had at least one other system if the flaps were down big hoss.
Guess your 22 years at mainline hasn't taught you how not to be an absolute dick.
The correct term is "extremely improbable." The FAA regulations (and similar regulations at EASA And other regulatory agencies) require the manufacturer to prove that "catastrophic incidents" are less likely than one chance in a billion flight hours.
https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/22680
I agree. There are three redundant systems for a reason.
However, the story indicates that it was a failure of one system:
> "Preliminary information shows there was only an issue with one system on this aircraft."
For those not in the know. There is essentially a library of incidents over the last basically three months of things that have happened inside the company. They get published regularly.
The differences they haven't made it to the media. Now everyone's ears are to the floor and they're looking at it. This isnt an a string of accidents that all of a sudden are happening all at once. They've always been happening.
I read those emails every time they come out and there’s usually 2-4 emergency landings for Airbus hydraulic failures alone. This incident is just standard Airbus shit.
I've [read recently](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2024/03/01/bedbug-panic-was-stoked-by-russia-says-france_6575870_7.html) that Russians are being blamed about media furore regarding parisian bedbugs.
Would you think there is maybe something similar here at play? Seems to be a lot of negative media around boeing and the yanks flying lately.
If you want a real laff, have a look at [BigJetTV](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkQef3Fidr7tm3gNuXgGKPw) when it's a windy day in London. The 'host' is absolutely bonkers, great entertainment
Really? This sort of thing happens weekly at all 3 of the majors, the media found a semi-hot topic and is running with it. Media is gonna media...
Also, 3 incidents, 3 safe landings ... seems like things are going *really* well at UA.
I’ve been looking at tickets to Japan, I always fly Japan Airlines or All Nippon. I was considering United because tickets are much cheaper, but they’re not in the running anymore!
People are so weird about being extremely vocal about their airline opinions. Nobody cares dude, just go book another airline without announcing it to the world.
It’s a public forum, specifically to talk about aviation.
“So weird about being extremely vocal about their airline opinions”
Feel free to scroll past the conversation that in no way included you, right? It’s called a dialogue
Just an FYI. Things like this DO happen. Airbus has 3 independent hydraulic systems. One of them might have failed. Media is just ape shit now having breaking news on every single 7700 alerts on Flightradar.
I started getting suggested one of these FR24 crawling groups and every hour someone's posting some screenshot of a plane squeaking 7700 asking "OMG WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THIS GUYS" with literally hundreds or thousands of people just shooting off opinions into the ether.
The best are the ones that are over water and the comment that always comes up is "are they gonna make it back!?"
If I recall correctly, I read a post from a few years ago on this sub about a pilot or mechanic saying how this shit would become the norm soon. Like comparing it to breaking down greyhound buses. Does anyone else remember that? I can’t seem to find it.
This is not news. This is exactly why redundancy exists. Hydraulic leaks or pump failures are not rare failures. In most cases a single hydraulic failure is a minor event hence the multiple pumps/systems.
People are on planes every day that have failures or even dispatch under MMEL and passengers dont realize it....
