Hey All, Everybody is recommending getting class 1 medical before ground school. Spoke to local flight school. They said at this point they would recommend a class 4 by a local family doctor to get the ball rolling AND class 1 applied for, because the class 1 takes 6-7 months for review/approval. Anybody shed some light on this? What is taking soooo long? What are key test differences between 1&4?

I wouldn’t waste your energy with the cat 4 medical. Just get the cat 1 or cat 3. If you get a cat 1 it reverts to a cat 3 after 12 months, and you’ll still have an additional 48 months validity at cat 3. Just make sure to renew the cat 1 medical prior to writing the CPL exam.

Thanks. Insightful and helpful. Your comment. Cat 1 drops to cat 3 after a year & valid for addition 4yrs etc. I was told a VALID cat 1 must be in hand prior to writing your CPL. which if it takes up to 6 months, some planning would be required. This accurate or Is it - you must have passed your cat 1, and submitted to T/C. Can do all your certifications but just can’t be hired on as commercial for hire until it’s in hand? I more or less don’t want to waste time, money or energy going down a wrong path because I didn’t ask

That’s right, as long as you have a valid cat 1 before you write your CPL. The reason why I suggest doing the cat 1 first is because they’ll do a few tests (ECG is one of them) that they won’t do on your cat 3. If you’re under 40, you just need the ECG on your initial cat 1 so when it comes time to renew, you won’t need to do it again. To answer your question, no you can’t do your CPL ride without a cat 1 or get hired anywhere unless it’s valid.

Thanks for your help. Ground school starts in sept (PPL). They suggested between 40&60 hrs of flight time. I kinda figured, if I go get my cat 1 now, theoretically if the stars align. I should be exiting ground school end of December with hours required, ground school done and hopefully the medical would have shown up by then. Does that sound far fetched or miss something? I estimated it’d take me 4 years to go from nothing to sitting in a commercial jet as a F/O. This is a career change so I’d like to be aggressive on my time scale. But probably can’t afford more than couple hours a week in the air (2-4 out of pocket)
