Why do some shops in UK don’t display prices?

So I sometimes go to a small phone store and a local grocery shop, the prices other than what’s printed on the limited products are the only ones priced. Do some shops now set prices based on what the owner can charge, depending on the customer?

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

2 years late but this saying was definitely created by someone who wanted to flog something overly expensive and said it to make people feel ensecure enough to buy at whatever price is set.

They don't have to, they make up the price as they go along.

In Finland, it is impolite to engage in small talk during sauna sessions, as Finns appreciate the sacred silence of this cultural practice.

In India, it’s considered impolite to eat with your left hand as Indians is that hand for cleaning themselves after the toilet.
WarmTransportation35@reddit
I use my right hand to clean my shit and eat food

In Soviet Russia, product haggles you
7ootles@reddit
*haggle. Barter means to trade goods for goods instead of paying with money.
SilyLavage@reddit
Yes, but in the UK you have to display the price in almost all cases.
WarmTransportation35@reddit
Yes but these places don't cater towards people who care about these standards.
sagima@reddit
They’re free samples - just walk out with them
Paracosm26@reddit
And the local bobby will be round for a chat and a cuppa later.......

I hate this. A local pharmacy does this, about 5 items on each shelf might have a price (hand scribbled on a scrap of paper). I buy nothing from there anymore after they charged £3.99 for the exact same VitD tablets the Tesco Pharmacy sold for 99p, but they’d run out.
Cafes that don’t display prices don’t get my business either.
cbob-yolo@reddit
No price displayed haggle like this guy

WarmTransportation35@reddit
For me that means prices are negotiable
PintSiz3dPrincess@reddit
So the staff can make up prices as they go along
Happy_Boy_29@reddit
Just ask for some free items on display and walk out the door, if they say you have not paid tell them there is no price to pay. Simples obvs.
MrSquigles@reddit
This is a thing that always irritates me when I'm outsode of the UK. Where are you from that the occasional plave in the UK is a culture shock?
WiseBelt8935@reddit
if a shop doesn't have prices just walk out.
it's either "if you have to ask you can't afford it" or it's a ripoff
