I'm in lake county Illinois and right now it's 65° and humid, we're also supposed to get a storm sometime tonight. Normally it's around 30-40 until mid march
Don’t worry. The hailstorms and tornadoes are coming to cool things down. The freezing temperatures tomorrow night will take care of the new green grass, the blossoms, and the buds. And things will seem normal. For a couple of days, anyway, until the heat returns.
One girl at work today looked out the window at the February thunderstorms complete with hail and said, "nothing to see here, just the world ending." We chuckled nervously.
Well you're gonna love what I said to this guy at work -
Guy - I love this! ( regarding weather)
Me - well you make sure you let your grandkids know how awesome today was when they're dealing with the consequences in 25 years.
My neighbor keeps saying he is going golfing and I’m like about to cry because this weather means something completely different to me than the idea of fun.
We may have avoided eye contact for the rest if the day after accidentally revealing ourselves to be collapseniks.
And no you can't she's my disaster buddy in case the apocalypse happens while we're working.
LOL
I'm in North Florida and the azaleas have been blooming in February (maybe that's normal?). But they almost immediately die bc we get a freeze. Probably not great.
It beat the all-time record by 4°, which is crazy when you think that we have reliable records going back 150 years. In a stable climate, any record should be an uncommon event. Breaking a record by 4° is crazy.
Family and friends in Kansai posting photos that are nuts to me after having lived there myself on / off over a decade period. Drastically different now.
Ok quick maths tell me that yes, my área has also been 10Cs over the norm. Cuz that's like 18 Fs, and definitely yep, that is happening here too.
When you think you don't have to have the panic dial turned all the way up but turns out, you do.
Hijacking the top sub comment to help folks out with units:
* °F
* °C
Just copy and paste the one you need, remembering to leave a space between the number and unit (i.e., “22 °C”).
At one point where I am we had a severe thunderstorm watch set to expire at 5am, and a winter weather advisory set to start at 4am. Did one of those head tilts and went "huh"
Oh! It was 70° when I walked to work and I left with it being 27° with intense wind and moderate snow (felt more like an angry-ass flurry). It’s been hot since it deep froze earlier this year (KCMO).
Same here. Our average high for February is 30F. It was 65F today. One day this week is randomly dropping down to the “normal” of 28, but then it goes right back to 50 degree weather for the next 7-10 day…
But this is fine. Everything is fine. /s
It used to kinda be like that in r/ABoringDystopia, but the wry ennui faded just like its namesake. The Israel-Hamas war broke them for good and now it's just another place be angry on the internet.
I hope your new sub fares better.
Glad I'm not the only to notice the brigading on that sub now. I mean, the genocide in Gaza is horrific, for sure, but that's not what I'm looking for as a member of that sub.
I think the brigading is coming from inside the house. I messaged the mods back in October saying the flood of off-topic posts was making me consider leaving. I was told to not let the door hit me in the ass, and spitefully muted for a month as an added FU. It looks like they even changed the sub's rules as a post-hoc justification.
I checked it out for the first time in months to see how it's going and yeah, there's really nothing there for me anymore at all. It used to be one of my favorite subs and now it's just angry noise.
Blue Ocean Event (BOE) is a term used to describe a phenomenon related to climate change and the Artic ocean, where it has become ice-free or nearly ice-free, which could have significant impacts on the Earth's climate system. This term has been used by scientists and researchers to describe the potential environmental and societal consequences of a rapidly melting Arctic, including sea-level rise, changes in ocean currents, and impacts on marine ecosystems.
**When will a BOE happen?**
Scientists predict that the Arctic could experience a BOE within the next few decades if current rates of ice loss continue. When a BOE does occur, it is likely to have significant impacts on the Earth's climate system, including changes to ocean circulation patterns and sea level rise.
**Has a BOE ever occurred?**
A BOE in the Arctic has not yet occurred in modern times. However, there has been a significant decrease in the Arctic sea ice extent in recent decades, and the Arctic sea ice cover has been reaching record lows during the summer months. This suggests that a BOE may be a possibility in the future if current trends of sea ice decline continue.

I'm in the Midwest. The high temperature in my town yesterday was 77F, the low was 17F. Two counties over had tornados and hail as the cold air moved in. I ran my fan all day, then had my electric blanket on at night. To say it was mind-boggling (and scary and surreal) is an understatement.
> NOAA projected that there’s a 22 percent chance that 2024 will be the new hottest year on record, and a 99 percent chance it will rank in the top five.
I am really curious to revisit this later this year…
I hiked in the mountains in shorts and a tshirt, and threw the ac on in my car driving home from work here in the south, because it was hot as fuck.
We used to have snow days in February here.
Honestly concerned about the upcoming summer
Me too buddy. Also Canada. This is the time of year where I should be looking out at piles of snow...frozen lakes etc. and *maybe* in a very mild year, *juuuust* starting to see the first signs of spring. It was fucking June today.
Was for a walk in my neighbourhood and gave a casual “unseasonably mild today eh?” to a neighbour and he actually replied “yeah it’s beautiful”. No sir, it’s fucking terrifying actually.
I was talking to a coworker last night about this winter and told him (to which he readily agreed) there's 3 types of people at this point - those who are upset they can't ride their snowmobiles, those who are "I'll take this kind of winter every time!" and those like us who see this happening and go "oh... shit... this ain't good". I just wish there were more people in the third category.
My mom loves the warm weather in the exact same way lol. She's like "finally canada is worth living in." Meanwhile I keep reminding her summers are probably going to be unbearably hot :/ I guess she prefers it since she's Indian
Sweden (Scandinavia) had a really weird weather anomaly, giving us a traditional 90's winter for the first time in at least 10-15 years.
I fear it'll be the last real winter in my life..
Crazy. I feel like I’m losing it too since people around me don’t seem to care. They’re like, “eh, nice day, anyways.” Like, this is NOT normal. It’s fuckin’ summer weather out here in February.
I started smoking as part of my 2024 new years resolution... I only have like one a week because I'm not really into inhaling toxic smoke that much, but I do it as a symbolic gesture to the times we live in. Well that and I like nicotine.
I've been asking the same thing. Idk what to do anymore aside from just doing the best I can and keep moving forward, love the things around me. But it's tough even to do that... 😞
Like what's causing this? Like serious question. I mean, where I live at least, last winter we actually had some pretty good snow, it felt relatively "normal". Idk what is up this year...
It's going to be 75 tomorrow where I am in NC. 75. In February.
I need to mow my lawn. In February.
I've got spring allergies starting already. IN FEBRUARY.
Every day in March on the ten day outlook is 60's or 70's.
Every tree is beginning to bloom.
And someone on my FB was excited because she could sunbathe at her pool yesterday.
Guess I'll go buy some plants and pretend it's all very normal. Might as well feed the bees and give shelter to the creatures while I'm here.
> And someone on my FB was excited because she could sunbathe at her pool yesterday.
That reminds me of people doing 'business as usual' in Pripyat after the reactor blew up.
In some Latin based languages, including my own, we have spring and summer as a series, instead of discrete seasons. Spring is "first spring" (prima~vera) and summer is (true) "spring" (~vera). It's not super clear, but it could be expanded, serialized. Just "vera" all year.
I've often thought about that. There really is technically only two seasons (summer and winter), and everything else is just a degree between them transitioning. Fall and Spring don't technically exist.
South Carolina. I can't sleep because of this. We go from 30F nights to 60F nights on what feels like every other day. House is sealed up like a box to keep things consistent, but it feels like it's counterintuitive.
We are getting three 40 degree F swings in 3 weeks. This is messed up. There is a huge state change underway. Freaky.
I don't necessarily hope for the collapse of everything, since I think we have some pretty great things, but this is ominous.
Got a mosquito her in Northern vt today with grossly abnormal high temps. Sugaring that should be happening in a month is happening now. Birds that should be 750km south are at my feeders. Ponds, lakes, reservoirs that should be frozen have open water.
Big things are changing here. Harbinger of times to come to say the least.
It was so warm we had an explosion of hatching spotted lantern flies. They were crawling all I er the foundation or in big clusters. Hopefully a cold snap will kill them if but the weather here in northeast PA has been mildish with little snow.

Collapse related because it shows how bad things are getting that we're now having to talk about how to make sense of "winter heatwaves," a term that wouldn't have made any sense to people 30 years ago.
