Who wants a Airbnb in Plano anyways lol
View on Reddit #2006728

TheFeedMachine@reddit

Only thing I can think of is people who travel for work and are sick of staying in hotel rooms. No other reason why I could see someone wanting an Airbnb in Plano.
View on Reddit #2008373

stewartdesign1@reddit

It is young local people who rent them for big loud drunken parties. They are the ones ruining it for everyone. We have ones in our neighborhood that are a constant problem.
View on Reddit #2025409

truth-4-sale@reddit

The onus should be on the landlord to monitor loud noise. You can do that with a doorbell cam.

I agree, but the owner is often living in another state and doesn’t give a damn.

I had a short term rental in Plano at one point. It was mostly families visiting relatives, families moving to Texas, local families who needed to move out of their houses during renovations, or people traveling for work along with their family. Maybe the reason we never got crazy parties is that we had a crib and high chair and allowed pets which made it attractive to families.
View on Reddit #2046731

tx001@reddit

Parties, sex trafficking. Two of the major problems Plano is tired of.

I swear y’all use the word sex trafficking way to loosely y’all act like the “heroes” and “for fathers” of America didn’t spend half there life’s in a brothel…

So I read the whole article promotion of prostitution and sex trafficking are two very different things that should not get confused as the same I think they love to use the words sex trafficking in regards to prostitution busts in red states because it helps dramatize the situation and the general public’s fear. I am completely in favor of legalizing sex work in order to remove any kinda of organized crime from the situation prohibition creates more crime and lack of regulation… witch is exactly what senator Cruz and abbot want to get more money from the feds to reinforce policing budgets but it just goes straight to there pockets. And if you think Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott aren’t screwing 1k an hour prostitutes every single night with are tax dollars you are an absolute fool.

So what is this about, exactly? The site is paywalled and I've never heard of this issue
View on Reddit #1993000

xenokilla@reddit (OP)

Lots of housing is being used for short term rentals. This causes a few issues, less inventory of housing available to buy which raises home prices. Also the home owners don't give a shit about who rents them, so lots of parties and disruptions go on.
View on Reddit #1993119

robbzilla@reddit

I mean, hotels could be torn down and a high rise apartment could be built in their place too. I don't see you griping about that.

View on Reddit #1993561

air bnb's, VRBO, etc
View on Reddit #1993700

throwtheclownaway20@reddit

Ah, I see. Yeah, fuck them. Us hotel folks been saying for years that nothing good could come of that and everyone told us, "oH, yOu'Re JuSt mAd ThAt tHeY'rE tAkInG yOuR mOnEy!" Nope, we just know why all the regulations & laws governing hotels exist and why it's bad when someone circumvents them.
View on Reddit #1993905

azwethinkweizm@reddit

I don't want to antagonize you but I've found airbnb rentals to be superior to hotels as a consumer in almost every way except for the ridiculous cleaning fees and chore list. Those two reasons are why I've moved on from STRs
View on Reddit #2006360

throwtheclownaway20@reddit

They're only superior because it's supposedly a whole house to yourself. You can get a big-ass suite if that's what you want, though. My whole philosophy, though, is "I'm on vacation, I'm doing the absolute bare minimum of work to stay alive this weekend."
View on Reddit #2016525

truth-4-sale@reddit

I know STRs that rent to different people at the same time. The kitchen, laundry room, living room, and shower (but not a the same time) is shared.
View on Reddit #2076700

Texas121183@reddit

The one thing I do like about Airbnb is having a place to cook. If I’m staying somewhere for a week, Jr sucks having to go to a restaurant every meal.
View on Reddit #1996002

robbzilla@reddit

I'll take an AirBnB over a hotel almost every time. Having a real kitchen is one reason. Having a real fridge and separate rooms for the kids is another. You start getting into rarefied prices if you want that in a hotel. One of the best experiences ever was an AirBnB in Montreal. $40 a night and we were in a charging neighborhood with friendly people, and a quick drive to anywhere. Hotels were triple the price and didn't have the amenities or charm.
View on Reddit #2028336

throwtheclownaway20@reddit

Buy a hot plate and some camping cookware or just a slow cooker, LOL. Way better than AirBNBs.

View on Reddit #2014319

throwtheclownaway20@reddit

Only if you set off the smoke alarm. If you're that worried, just ask the front desk if it's okay. If you're that responsible and forthright, they'll probably say be cool about it. We used to have a guy with us that had a whole-ass setup and would fill the 4th floor with the smell of whatever he was cooking. It was usually better than our restaurant, LOL

Not to mention that the prices of these VRBO's have gotten higher than hotel room prices. Also you're expected to clean the place, and pay a cleaning fee. It's stupid. Since no one is forcing people to rent them, I don’t see the problem with that. They would rent for what they’re worth and no more. The noise pollution to neighbors, that I understand.
View on Reddit #2014938

xenokilla@reddit (OP)

They're taking housing off the market that could be rented by long term tenants or purchased by people.
View on Reddit #2016508

Given that DFW is all about sprawl and is in no way land locked, that seems like a weak argument.

Don't forget the taxes lol.
View on Reddit #2009721

throwtheclownaway20@reddit

For real. Hotel taxes are, like, 18% now. That sucks, but this is also an industry where you *really* get what you pay for
View on Reddit #2016453

AntonOlsen@reddit

AirBNB and VRBO were both more expensive than even some nice hotels in South Austin when I was booking a trip down there for Sept. Ended up booking an Extended Stay America for 1/3 the price.
View on Reddit #2006616

superdude4agze@reddit

It's a catch-22. I like AirBnB/VRBO when I'm traveling because *hotels fucking suck* (service sucks, noise sucks, amenities suck, location sucks, housekeeping sucks, etc.), hate short term rentals where I live because it hurts locals. There's a space for both, but just like hotels shouldn't be unregulated, nor should short term rentals. Same thing happened here as it did with Uber and those shitty scooters that were everywhere. Zero regulation makes a company move in and expand quickly, then regulation arrives that will either kill the industry or bring it back in line. Happens all the time, rinse, repeat.
View on Reddit #2001350

throwtheclownaway20@reddit

Short-term rentals being regulated the way they need to be would literally just make them very tiny hotels. IDK where you keep staying that literally every facet of hotels suck, though. Sounds like a you problem

View on Reddit #2008419

Kassialynn@reddit

We’ve lost out on countless offers to all cash investors only to see them on air bnb a couple months later. That and all the hidden fees and the crazy cleaning procedures are why I don’t use rental sites. Also short term rentals can and do generate a lot of noise and parking issues.
View on Reddit #2077003

PeteyandLove@reddit

I completely understand your point of view and I'd be real pissed too. 1st-time home buyers should come first before investors.
View on Reddit #2077495

50bucksback@reddit

If you ask Reddit it's because every single AirBNB makes you mop the floor, mow the lawn, clean the gutters, etc etc The actual problem is corporations buying up single family housing to turn into AirBNBs and lowering available housing.
View on Reddit #2042981

truth-4-sale@reddit

Limit STRs to homes owned by people and not corporations.
View on Reddit #2076774

robbzilla@reddit

I prefer them personally. Hotels uniformly suck in comparison, though I've had to get more selective with which STR I rent. I avoid the ones with outrageous cleaning fees and cleaning requirements. But then, we always leave the place in good shape, and have the owners messages to us to back that claim up.

Do you know if there are plans to work on the existing short-term-rentals before the ban? 1. Banning them is a great first step. 2. Preventing those existing ones from continuing would be a good next step. 3. It would be nice to see this ban applied to the rest of the metroplex.

In Houston it happens. But your example is not remotely apples to apples within the context of the article and this discussion.
View on Reddit #2006253

azwethinkweizm@reddit

Houston has relaxed zoning requirements. Dallas does not. My example is about as apples to apples as it gets. In what way is a Motel 6 operating in a residential zoned neighborhood not comparable to a short term rental operating in a residential zoned neighborhood?
View on Reddit #2006729

View on Reddit #2004142

Are homeowners now offering short term rental of bakeries, retail stores, or petrochemical plants? Does your “residential” argument extend to operating any manner of home based business? Headquartered your lawn care company there? Disallowing macramés classes for profit? Banning part time eBay sellers? Renting your home for longer than 28 days?
View on Reddit #2004276

miraclegun@reddit

View on Reddit #2017802

trufus_for_youfus@reddit

Nearly every STR is in a residence. And the majority are in areas zoned residential. My point is that if the argument is you can’t have an STR because it’s residential then you can’t do anything when it’s residential. Which would cripple many small business owners and service providers. Folks act like some sort of magic occurs at day 28 of a booking.
View on Reddit #2017899

_____hi_____@reddit

Damn the thing is I am on your side but your argument is poor. The issue is parties and excessive noise. Small businesses have nothing to do with the issue.
View on Reddit #2028708

The landlord could easily monitor noise with a door bell cam.
View on Reddit #2076358

View on Reddit #2025411

trufus_for_youfus@reddit

Define “harm”. My neighbor mowing his grass at 530am causes me harm if I work nights.
View on Reddit #2025426

delicate-fn-flower@reddit

Considering that most cities have ordinances against making that kind of noise at that time, yeah, you could absolutely report them for going against it. I feel like you are trying to find a strawman argument though, because anyone who has worked night shift knows they will be dealing with loud noises during their rest time and find ways around it. Kinda comes with the territory.
