What's wrong with Bradford ?

In discussions about the UK's and sometimes even Europe's greatest shitholes Bradford is a name I always here thrown around a lot. But looking at pictures on Google it actually looks...kinda nice ? There's a nice looking town square with a water feature, nice looking Victorian architecture common in the North of England and a relatively clean looking high street. What makes this place bad enough to be thrown in with Luton, Blackpool and Slough ? Seriously considering getting the train halfway across the country just to see what all the fuss is about
SerpensPorcus@reddit
I used to live there my main memory is getting the shit kicked out of me by a group of guys and then people literally stepping over me before eventually somebody calling an ambulance. There were areas I just didn't feel safe walking through by myself (this as a late-teens guy).
I ride a motorbike and I still won't ride through certain parts of Bradford alone I'd probably end up walking home after somebody bike-jacked me. Do ride through it with my mates though safety in numbers and all that. Friend who lives there had death threats a couple of years ago etc etc

Omg what area was it?

It has the worst driving Iāve ever experienced in the UK. I still refer to pulling out of a junction when thereās clearly not enough room āpulling a Bradfordā.
NomineNebula@reddit
Everyone drives smarter in bradford, they base their driving off of what they see, id argue you are safer driving in bfd than leeds
Ive seen way more phone users while driving in leeds too
chanjitsu@reddit
I drive through occasionally and the mad driving starts as soon as you enter Bradford every time like a switch. It's uncanny.
One_Toe1461@reddit
100% its on the motorway stretch just leading to bradford and the bad drivers begin from there, which is a good early indication of knowing ur nearly there
Michaeljaaron@reddit
I remember coming off the motorway way a few months ago entering Bradford, a group of Chinese men in an audi suv blew right though the red lights next to us. Luckily thier was an ANPR interceptor right at the roundabout that took off after them.
Aggressive-Worth-179@reddit
Must be bad thought driving in birm was bad enoughĀ
macleod2024@reddit
Bradford is a nightmare for driving. I havenāt driven around in it for about a year. Had to do it this weekend and had a stark reminder.
Even just the outskirts are terrible. People cutting you up, just pulling out of junctionsā¦.the list is extensive. Soon as you get into Leeds areas it calms right down.
Fabulous-Move930@reddit
I so disagree. I love north or Bradford and driving round Leeds is much worse
Fit_Manufacturer4568@reddit
I drive all over the north and Midlands following football. To get back to where I live in Leeds it's easier going through the edge of Bradford.
No matter where I've been. The worst part of the whole day is coming back, between the end of the M606 and Dawson's Corner.
macleod2024@reddit
I feel your pain. My work drive used to be to and from Dawsonās Corner. I live in Keigjley so itās Greengates, Saltaire, Shipleyā¦ā¦.all of it a nightmare.
My friend lives in Crossgates so I have to do all that to the Rodley roundabout when I visit. I saw 2 near misses on Friday along with one actually nearly taking me out. Crazy.

In Bradford red, yellow and green lights all mean go.

Apparently, Bradford is the worst place in the UK for car insurance premiums
Scarboroughwarning@reddit
It used to be Bradford, Birmingham, Luton, that were the worst for scam claims. Industrial levels.
Beorma@reddit
Do you have a source for that? Having driven in both extensively, I have to question the sanity of anyone who thinks Brum is anywhere as bad as Bradford.
Scarboroughwarning@reddit
I used to work in the industry. We didn't have sirens on our computers, but if we had ....
I worked in anti fraud for a while. Those ones, and London (forgot to mention that, until a reply comment).
There would be certain things we'd look for. I'll not go into details. But, those areas. There were other concentrated ones too. One in Wales. But that was a single group (they used a fork lift truck to administer damage, lol).
There was a Leeds company... Jesus, every one was dodgy.
If a claims company is set up in the same office as a money transfer place...not good.
Several each had family/friends doing different bits. One did the claim, one did storage, one did hire.....etc. When you get a £4000 storage invoice for a £400 Renault Mégane...
Beorma@reddit
That's what I was asking for a source on. Insurance fraud must surely have numbers.
Scarboroughwarning@reddit
No doubt. If it is location based, I suspect there has been plenty. Trade mags/websites etc will cover it.
I used to be interested, when I did that. But now, not something I think about.
https://www.thinkinsurance.co.uk/part-time-motor-trade/top-10-crash-for-cash-insurance-scam-hot-areas-revealed
Is the one I found, and likely more up to date. Bradford and Birmingham are top. Then Oldham.
My experience ceased 4yrs ago.
To be clear I have no axe to grind. I'm just telling you where we had issues. London was nuanced as the gangs would use various immigrants as they had minimal history and may not be staying here long.
The West Yorkshire, West Midlands and Lancashire groups were a little different. More sophisticated, and end to end. They were slick and covered all bases. The Luton issue reduced quicker, as the likely had more lucrative options, and we got better at knocking them back.
The Manchester/Liverpool ones were not as end to end. Much may have changed. I'm not surprised that Bradford and Birmingham haven't.

Kitchen_Part_882@reddit
Adding from my experience, there do seem to be more crap drivers in some parts of the Birmingham conurbation than in Bradford in my experience, I drive around both on a reasonably regular basis for work.
No accidents so far in either but way, way more near misses and horrible lane discipline in Brum's suburbs.
TeaLimp9576@reddit
There must be some common factor shared between these three places, can't quite put my finger on it

kaynegold400@reddit

That's more due to their being a significant industry in insurance scams.
Scarboroughwarning@reddit
I've added more details to my other replies.
Jburli25@reddit
That's true. And having a huge number of uninsured drivers in the area doesn't help, as your insurance will have to pay regardless of who is at fault.

It's funny, because it seems almost every taxi licence is also from Bradford

ScottOld@reddit
Saw an Asian driver today in a bright yellow Range Rover, usual fare, illegally dark tinted windows (not enough in this case given his face was practically in the window due to the sharpness of the turn he made) custom plate, speed down the road overtake a car 30-40m from the lights which split into a left lane and 2 forward, overtakes car, then right across back into the left lane to get through the lights.
ScottOld@reddit
Should see the Facebook pages for crap parking, loads of Bradford in there, make mr khans yellow merc look well parked. And on the drivers, round here Asians fall into 2 categories, taxi drivers, plodding along in poorly maintained hybrids parking and stopping wherever, or the ones that have a ācool carā so drive like complete and utter entitled self important idiots
ordeci@reddit
Can confirm. It was absolutely mental how people would drive there. Constant near misses, always having to watch out for someone handbraking at a roundabout for insurance scams and just general insanity.
I blame the reduced oxygen at altitude.
Harrry-Otter@reddit
It has some good points (great food, a couple of good galleries, the surrounding countryside) but other than that itās a pretty standard issue post-industrial decline northern town/city. Not much to do, little investment, little in terms of quality jobs. IMO it struggles a lot having the much bigger, better cities of Leeds and Manchester both being so close by that thereās little draw to Bradford.
It also famously has a large south Asian community, but has historically struggled with integration. Parts of the city almost feel you walked from West Yorkshire to Karachi. This has been quite controversial for a number of reasons.
The_39th_Step@reddit
Itās interesting to see how integration has gone so badly in Bradford but much better in Manchester (and I assume Leeds). Some of the areas surrounding Manchester like Oldham and Rochdale are much more reminiscent of Bradford in terms of integration.
Fit_Manufacturer4568@reddit
The community is so large in Bradford they don't have to. In fact Bradford is the 'capital' of the Asian North. People of Pakistani heritage from all over go to Bradford to socialise, shop etc.
The_39th_Step@reddit
Bradford has a large South Asian community but itās not the ācapitalā of the North. That title doesnāt exist. Bradford has 140,000ish Pakistani people while Greater Manchester has over 200,000.
MCLidl123@reddit
greater manchester is a county where the pakistani community is spread over multiple cities/towns.
Fit_Manufacturer4568@reddit
Greater Manchester isn't one place is it?
Asians in Dewsbury/Batley, Huddersfield, Halifax, Leeds, Oldham, Rochdale and even as far away as Middlesbrough and Newcastle. Go to Bradford for shopping etc.
GrizCuz@reddit
'Asian North' was the original quote, not the North, different things. There's towns in the North with plenty of South Asian folk living in them, but not one city with such a large Asian %. Those Greater Manchester folk are shared around, in Bradford a large proportion of that 140,000 people are in city centre Bradford [with a few in places like Shipley and Keighley].
AdSoft6392@reddit
I agree it's not the capital of the North but GM covers a much wider geography than Bradford so it feels much more concentrated in Bradford than GM
throwawaytypist2022@reddit
Yet this is something to celebrate because diversity. I'm an expat until mid-2026 and I can't wait to get my family out of the country. It's a White minority country in 30 years, in Europe, what the fuck. The English are mad.
YorkshireTart@reddit
Have a drive through Harehills in Leeds... I think you'd reconsider...
I_have_arms@reddit
It's not much better in Manchester. Have you been up towards Chetham Hill recently? Hated the place.
But you're absolutely right regarding Oldham and Rochdale. There's massive problems with integration in those areas which isn't getting better.
OctopusIntellect@reddit
Why? We had some nice meals there.
The_39th_Step@reddit
Cheetham Hill is the worst part of Manchester, the vast majority of the city is a lot better
I_have_arms@reddit
Having worked in GM as a Paramedic, there's plenty of places I wouldn't willingly live.
If you superimposed a clock over a map of GM, I'd avoid everywhere between 12 and 4 - admittedly there's nice areas of Oldham, up in the hills, Mossley too. But the rest of Rochdale, Oldham and Ashton, I couldn't sell myself to live in.
The_39th_Step@reddit
Agreed - the nature is great. Lots of that is GM and not Manchester and I think the distinction is important. Integration in Rochdale is not the same as Manchester
SmashingK@reddit
Part of the problem with minorities moving in is the willingness of natives moving out.
Then the natives complain about integration lol. You moved away from minorities which reduces their contact with the majority.
Integration works when there's another major community to integrate into.
The case of Bradford is a majority moving away allowing the minority to become the majority.
FelicityCuntsworth@reddit
The reason why nobody moves in is the reason everybody moved out.
ScottOld@reddit
Cheetham hill is a massive pile
Nice-Tap6199@reddit
Pakistani community, why keep using the euphemistic "south Asian".Ā
Last_Entertainer_136@reddit
Typical uncultured Ignorant racist Brit š. Karachi is one of the largest most advanced educated cosmopolitan southern coastal cities in South Asia , with a large Sindhi population. Bradford is mainly made up of a Kashmiri agricultural Pakistani diaspora from small towns and villages in the tribal regions of northern Pakistan/ Kashmir who were asked to help with textile factory shortages in the 70s as invited migrants , hence struggles with integration , along with a HUGE helping hand from northern working class Brits in northern cities/ towns , who have had xenophobic/ racist views for generations.

Muslim state within UK basically who fail to integrate.
Consuela_no_no@reddit
As a south Asian Muslim it is so foreign to me whenever I see how people in our community live in Bradford, foreign and low key terrifying.

Mate, I am mixed pakistani having studied in bristol and lived in the south west for most of my life and having travelled up there from time to time to spend it with my family it is backwards as hell. There are no job opportunities and the surrounding areas that are somewhat okay like bingley, saltaire/shipley, ilkley and haworth are completely segregated from bradford and so are the good views, me personally I donāt like the way Bradford looks compared to the more rural areas and around Leeds. My family live in keighley and in that community a lot of people I know are great people but the main issue i see is monoculturalism between whites and asians which has caused racial and wealth inequality the likes of which i have never seen before (worse than all other urban areas iāve been too). The other issues other than social cohesion include the complete lack of solid job opportunities (stayed there for 6 months trying to find a job with one agency completely snubbing me and another place offering up Ā£4/hour), the police force, lack of educational opportunities for young people and the culture which is SO based around cars the amount of times iāve gotten sick of the conversation and walked off canāt be counted on one hand, drug use is also a serious issue with most people in my family and on my street doing them with the exception of my direct family in my house thankfully, in keighley there are alright levels of ammenities but the danger and deprivation on the streets doesnāt make it worthwhile or enjoyable going to as evidenced by the getting beat up on the way back from the gym, although I have to state that the crime level is not the number one issue here as incidents are rare because i know a lot of people around the area (canāt say the same about newcomers). The only thing I enjoyed is going on that canal to ride my bike as far away from the place as possible lmao.
There are two goods things that I will say, the food is delicious and is honestly worth travelling for maybe for a day and there are some good activities that you can do, some include golf course in keighley, the railway line, new swimming pool at the bottom of bradford (think its called the sedburgh centre) and probably a lot more which I think is a great direction for the city and keighley to focus in on if it wants to become liveable in future, maybe it will in a decade or so who knows?
For now though, unless you want to visit for the day to go out to eat like ratemytakeaway or go to swim or something I would completely avoid living in and around the bradford area. It just is not worth it if you want to have a good quality of life not to mention the issues with being a southerner living up north making the situation even worse, but even if youāre a northerner do not live in those places. The other nicer surrounding areas are again okay but only marginally and unfortunately youāve got the same issues there.
AbdouH_@reddit
Thanks for the detailed answer. Yeah that matches exactly what Iāve heard about the place
ExoticPossibility360@reddit
I donāt think iām ever going back i canāt lie
bleak_gallery@reddit
I donāt understand why they come to new counties if they donāt want to integrate.. genuinely.. why not just stay where they are if they like them laws etc? if theyāre fleeing their countries like Afghan, why would they flee but bring their beliefs here? Surely they would want to flee their current situation due to laws, lack of rights etc they would want to come to a country and integrate to a place with equality etc.. otherwise the cycle just repeats and they may have well saved themselves to stress and money and stayed where they were. I genuinely donāt understand.
youllbetheprince@reddit
They get to retain the bigotry of the old place but enjoy the affluence of the new place. In short, they get to have their cake and eat it and no one stops them.
bleak_gallery@reddit
But itās not affluent? Ive never been to Bradford but by the comments it seems like a shithole so surely they would prefer to be a in a hot country and living by the laws which they like. Itās bizarre and honestly as a female, scares me that one day myself or my children will be subject to oppression or unable to walk freely without judgement if itās as bad as what everyone is saying.
CptBluemax@reddit
Lool have you seen these people's home country šĀ
youllbetheprince@reddit

-Blue_Bull-@reddit
It's affluent compared to the middle East. Most middle Eastern countries offer nothing or very little in welfare. The UK is offering housing and enough money to live on and raise a family.
Any-End5772@reddit
Because bradford is full of ARABS right?
Every_Piece_5139@reddit
Middle East ? Indian sub continent more like.
Legend_2357@reddit
Also remember that most British Pakistanis are miripuris who are very backward compare to most Pakistanis
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
No, British Pakistanis are more than likely born in the UK so British. There's no excuse.
Every_Piece_5139@reddit
Typical Reddit. There are parts of Bradford that are ok. Itās not much different to other towns/cities in the north with relatively large south Asian minorities that essentially have been abandoned by the government. Certainly donāt be scared by it. There are equally bad areas of deprivation for some of the poor white working class British community too but also fairly affluent ones.
AdSoft6392@reddit
The data shows that Bradford is still miles worse than most other places. Higher crime rates, higher unemployment rates, higher rate of relationships within a family.
CptBluemax@reddit
It's to invade them......and to out breed the native populationĀ
msully89@reddit
It's a lack of intelligence, it's not that hard to understand
bleak_gallery@reddit
Honestly itās just ignorance on my side.. I live in the middle of nowhere and Iāve never met a Muslim or spoke to anyone similar, Asian, Indian anything.. not by choice, Iāve just never came across anyone with them beliefs. I sometimes see TikTokās of them in London and stuff but I never go to London so never seen it irl.
I donāt even follow wars abroad or anything because imo I canāt do anything about it so I just donāt care to consume the media relating to it.. so I probably also lack intelligence due to ignorancešš
Emotional_Plate_1501@reddit
I am not anti islam but some genuinely do not want to integrate. Saying that I have met lovely muslim progressives from the likes of Morrocco, Algeria etc
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
It's against their religion to integrate, it's forbidden and considered a major sin in Islam.
Any-End5772@reddit
Absolute bollocks.
Reasonable-Cup9712@reddit
Are you feeling okay? Hindus and Sikhs are are considered examples of multiculturalism working in the country. And what's wrong with arranged marriages? Child beating is something done in many white English households, it is not exclusive to those you mentioned and there's no evidence to suggest it has. And what other backwards practices, may I ask? Your statements reek of ignorance and lack of familiarity with South Asians in general, drawing doubt on the authenticity behind your claim to be South Asian.
tremorinfernus@reddit
Families that have arranged marriages generally have an element of coercion towards the womenfolk. They are supposed to marry within the community or face ostracism, and sometimes violence. Such families make sure their children as are weak and lack a spine, so they don't resist.
It is largely a backward system.
Tldr: A lot of arranged marriages are forced, and most are coerced.
Reasonable-Cup9712@reddit
Where's your evidence? This seems like information that you just made up lol
tremorinfernus@reddit
Common knowledge. Ask women. Don't ask guys.
Reasonable-Cup9712@reddit
I'm afraid that's an inadequate source. I have so many relatives that have had arranged marriages. Literally zero issues were present with them. And when there was, there was a divorce. And I know many more who aren't relatives that didn't have an issue. Maybe it was an issue with your inadequate sample size, but for the majority, it is no issue. Try again lmao.
antelope__canyon@reddit
Can we please change the view on arranged marriages? Arranged doesn't mean forced. It just means you're asking someone (usually your parents) to suggest potential matches. You then meet and make a decision.
Back in the days arranged used to mean you had no choice but that's not the case any more. Nowadays it's hardly any different from matchmaking websites.
Emotional_Plate_1501@reddit
But usually dating websites have controls like 18+, a choice for you to make decisions and not an overhead of your parents watching you make decisions or approval from them especially when you are living under them letās say which can be pressuring. Most donāt say but the teens cannot wait to taste bit of freedom hence the car culture is big there. Itās an outcry of whatās going in homes whereas at least with a car they feel sense of freedom going anywhere they would like. Point being, freedom of choice and privacy we value in this country does not exist from what I have seen and spoken to.
antelope__canyon@reddit
Again, what you're describing are old fashioned arranged marriages. That's not the case any more. I was arranged married and had a lot of say in terms of what I'm looking for in a partner. There was 0 pressure from my parents and in fact I said no to the first 4 matches and my parents didn't even once try to make me change my mind.
tremorinfernus@reddit
Would your parents have been okay if you chose a spouse from a different race/faith?
antelope__canyon@reddit
Yes absolutely, but they know just as well as I that it's not my top choice

I worked at the college as a sens teacher.Ā Arranged marriages were a big thing we had to look out for (especially with our students).Ā I was suspicious of one student who kept disappearing for a week or so over the year and wasn't able to tell much of where they'd been.Ā
Really great student, 16/17yo, she had Williams syndrome but I saw her actually doing really well in her future if she was given the opportunity and support. Left a smile on everyone's face she interacted with.
I reported it to the head of the course, she brushed it off, repeatedly. I was zero hours so my reporting route was with her rather than safeguarding.Ā
End result was her being married off toĀ a 43yoĀ bloke in Pakistan and then was subsequently planed off to there once the year ended I believe.Ā
I left before then. Upon bringing it up with the course leader after she'd said she had been married, the course leader replied: "It will probably be the best thing that ever happens to her".
Absolutely disgusting. Half the team was just vile peopleĀ
CaradocX@reddit
I also taught at the college. Before it got handed insane amounts of money. The amount of corruption there was ridiculous. The majority of staff in my department were lovely. But one was straight up evil.
Slow_Perception@reddit
Not 100% when they got handed loads as I remember they were vying for more when I was there. It was in the new building after the fire. But I definitely remember thinking I could smell corruption around.
It even had that baked in type of corruption you find in public bodies where the sheer lack of organisation from management warranted theirs & their mate's jobs in the first place.
It really tainted my view of how our institutions operate. Then I went to work for the NHS š
CaradocX@reddit
I was in the Performing Arts Department doing my teaching qualification. We got moved into one of the big art rooms as our staff room and were with the media and music department. Media was just one guy who had come from the BBC, in his first year and had yet to do his teaching degree and he had also had no say in which students were accepted to the course that year. They had accepted everyone because it was money, regardless of whether they were capable or not. One day Head of the School came down and took him aside, but because the room was so big, we could all hear exactly what he said.
It was over a decade ago so I paraphrase, but it went along the lines of:
'How many students are passing the course?'
'About 50%'
'I need 80% to pass'.
'No chance, half of them don't even turn up to class'.
'Do you ring them to find out why they aren't in attendance?'
'Yes.'
'On the phone, do they show any understanding of the course?'
'One or two of them.'
'Pass them. Ring them all up and get something out of them so you can pass them. Pass 80% or I have to sack half the staff next year.'
Poor bloke spent the next couple of months looking like he'd been condemned to a firing squad. Of course the next year the money came rolling in, but I qualified and ran. I try not to worry about how many people may be wandering around with qualifications they got based on a phone call.
I can only imagine the NHS is even worse.
Slow_Perception@reddit
Oof.. Yeah that's brought back some memories.
Similar discussions with my manger and their above too.
I made a basic form thing on word for tracking my students progress at their work placement because they didn't have anything to really prove our students had done anything. I'd been saying this since I started (above 4 months in iirc) and no one took any notice.
Ofstead came in and kicked off saying exactly what I'd been saying about our department.
Talks with management turned from: "You won't have a job soon because we can't see learner progress. And no, it's our job to make the system for tracking. You have to make each student write an essay for each placement session, we don't care if they can't write, you do it for them!". To "Oh our favorite person in the whole world! You know that thing that you've been trying to make time for you to do? Can you do it now? No we haven't made any extra time and can't pay you overtime. But pretty please?" (proceeds to give me 'or you'll loose your job eyes'.
Talking of this has just reminded me of Beacon Recruitment! How our great institutions start these little businesses to not pay their staff correctly and add another layer of faff to deal with in order to get paid. Likewise NHSP for the NHS... The amount of emails that had to be remembered by multiple people in order for me to actually get paid was ridiculous. I wasn't paid for 3 months once because my boss's boss kept 'forgetting' to send an email...
NHS is a slightly different flavor of it. (from my experience and what I've heard from others) It's got that same C-suite/ bloated managers that then use/manipulate the well-meaning medical and frontline staff to do all the work with little help.
And the waste/corruption caused just by general bad management... They didn't renew my contract. I wonder if it was something to do with me sending an email to a lot of department heads explain exactly why the IT department at the hospital was so bad and broken (i.e. Band 2 Managers never actually coming in and doing anything to help/ ridiculous money wasting policies/ favoritism towards c-suite/management/finance).
Sorry this has ended up a right wall. Best not to get me started on all this...
I'm making something now that will hopefully stop this in the future. That's where the trauma energy is supposed to go, not into internet rants XD
Hope you've got somewhere better to work now
Emotional_Plate_1501@reddit
Yeah, its backwards and there should be a portal where you can report these backwards practices in UK to police especially if they are given british citizenship.

I live half in Leeds, half in Bradford these days.
My girlfriend lives in Leeds and 3 or 4 nights of the week, I stay with her. The rest of the days, I live in Bradford with my mum.
But I was fully raised in Bradford. It is only the last few months in which I have had these living arrangements.
marquess_rostrevor@reddit
Do you enjoy living in Bradford or is more of a "well this is where I'm from so I shall continue" type of thing? I have met some people who claim to hate it but refuse to move anywhere else.
MunrowPS@reddit
I live in north if Bradford just outside of saltaire, is quite nice around here tbh.. moved in from a more affluent city and will raise kids here, know people who've moved from London to the place.. good networks of decent folks about, across a lot of races/cultures down at kids clubs.. a lot of interesting heritage and history to the area aswell
I'm in a nice bit... But most of the city is a shithole tbh, just deprived with nobody looking after it, people quite happy to dress/drive flash while having a front garden full of waste and house falling apart...
The architecture in the city centre and places like manningham can be incredible, like parts of Kensington or something... But I wouldn't live there

The architecture in Manningham is stunning but that positive is outweighed by the fact that these properties are in a terrible state of disrepair. They are grounds for fly tipping, uncontrolled and unmanaged vegetation, crack houses and shockingly bad driveways and roads.
You quite rightly mentioned this in your second point. It is amazing how such an affluent area has been relegated to such... crap.

As soon as I get my degree, I am out of here. I stayed in Bradford to look after my mother who had health issues but she has since recovered enough to look after herself.
If things go to plan, I should be out of this city in about 2 or so years. It cannot come quick enough.

It's interesting that the top-voted comment here is from someone who obviously doesn't live in Bradford, but actually lives in Northern Ireland.
Why is that? I have no idea. (I live in northern England.)

Wise_Addendum_1135@reddit
Here's my experience as a lefty multicultural-loving- studied-to-be-an-RS teacher southerner who moved here with my husband.
It's hell.
We don't have a normal life.
I was ready to adapt and be friendly and show I wasn't like the racist white people some folk might have grown up around. My daughter went to nursery and is now in a primary school.
She has never had a playdate. She has never veen invited to a friends house (at least she has by the children, but the parents won't allow it). No one will come to our home. No birthday parties. We tried multiple times and no one will attend so we tried other types. No spooky or halloweeny parties, or dress up parties or friendship parties or meeting in town to play or shared meals or park dates or anything.
She's 6 and hasn't experienced a single normal aspect of childhood that I'd expect. And its not that she's not got friends at school. She just isn't allowed to have anything further to do with them.
It doesn't matter whether I'm willing to adapt and serve halal food or book halal party venues and work around payer times and wish people happy Eid etc.
We're not part of life here. And no one wants us to be.
It's been a learning curve and when multiple people tell you you'll never be good enough to socialise with... it's time to leave. Of course now we're financially trapped here while I try and move my daughter to a school where someone anyone will let her visit a friend's house or let me take them to the cinema or shopping.
It's not normal for a little girl to feel she's not welcome. We've tried clubs and groups outside school...
Its all the same. No one wants to see us or wants to talk to us.
That's why it's awful. Because I watch my daughter crying because she just wants a party. Any party. She just wants friends to play with. And it's something after three years I know I can't offer her.
It's not normal and it's not fair.
Arrakis_Is_Here@reddit
That's a big question with lots of answers. So I shall do my best.
Crime: It's always been pretty bad for crime. It got worse in the early 90s after there was a riot and then we had the infamous race riot in the late 90s. After that happened, the Asian youth in the city seemed to become emboldened. I've had a number of friends be attacked for being white in an Asian neighborhood. I've seen fights break out in the city centre and if an Asian person was involved, it would be guaranteed every Asian within sight would go charging in, a common saying I've heard; "if you're going to fight an Asian, be prepared to fight 40 of them". It's not just Asians (and to clarify, it's not all Asians either, just a minority giving others a bad rep). White people are just as bad...(again, not all white people) a lot of council estates are just awful, notable shout-out to Holme Wood. I wouldn't walk through Holme Wood during the day. Whereas I'd happily walk through any Asian majority neighborhoods during the day. It's possible I could get away with it, if I name dropped the right family, but it's not something I'd risk. For every scumbag Asian I've met, I've met just as many scummy white people, eastern European people and black people.
Drugs are rife, homelessness is rife, violent crime is terribly high.
Antisocial behavior: Pretty much anywhere you go in Bradford you'll witness some level of Antisocial behavior. Feral teenagers go unchecked. Last time I'd been in city centre after dark with my kids, we'd been for a meal in Halifax. We had a 20 minutes wait for the bus to my house and the feral teenagers were just roving in packs. In just shy of 10 minutes, I'd witnessed half dozen assaults. (I hailed a taxi and got the fuck out of dodge). Last time I challenged antisocial behavior, I was walking along the canal and 2 kids were pelting swans with rocks. I called them out and within seconds I was surrounded by over a dozen teenage scumbags. When I used to pick my kids up from school, they'd be threatening the teachers soon as they were off school property. Their parents weren't much better either and this is in what's considered a decent school and an ok area. Obviously antisocial behavior isn't just teenagers, but it goes up to all ages.
Police are too underfunded to effectively tackle both crime/antisocial behavior. So they resort to big displays of traffic stops during rush hours and impound uninsured/no MOT cars to make it look like they're doing something.
Lack of vision: This applies to the council and residents. If anything remotely good or hip or cool etc opens in the city, it doesn't last long. Point of fact...Five Guys, awesome great something different from McDonald's and Greg's. It closed down after approx a year.
For years residents have called for something to be done about the city center. The council responded and in short said "these are our plans for regeneration of the city center" and everyone said "yes! Brilliant, this is exactly what Bradford needs" and the council said great, work begins next week. Now everyone is complaining the regeneration is taking too long, or it's killing the city centre, or it's short sighted. Now I'm no city planner or an engineer or an architect. So I don't know how these things go, but if does feel they should have done one bit at a time, instead they seem to be do most of it all at once.
If you know anything about Bradford City Centre infrastructure, you'll know all it takes is one little hurdle in the flow of traffic and it can and does have a knock on effect around the whole city centre and causes huge backlogs of stuck traffic. These roadworks haven't helped. Then take in to account all the building work for the old Odeon. There's been works going on outside Alhambra since before all this started, which has a serious effect on footfall flow. Then there's building works going on just off Canal Rd next to Broadway centre. Now add to all that, the Interchange bus station is closed indefinitely, due to safety concerns, which means all the buses that normally go through there and now overflow in to the city centre, which is already cramped due to the ongoing works.
The People: This has been mentioned loads, so I'll try to be brief. First, the elephant in the room, it's not a multicultural city like the powers that be claim it to be. It's a culturally divided city. I won't go in to why's or how's. There's exceptions, as with anything good or bad. I hold out a little hope, as I often see groups of teenagers with different ethnicities, downside these are the aforementioned, feral teenagers who's sole aim is to terrorise decent folk.
Racists aside. No one is happy. I did genuinely see comments, asking for Bradford City Centre to be regenerated and now those same people are complaining about it happening. People tend to unfriendly, again there are exceptions.
Driving: It's just awful. You are literally taking your life in your hands once you enter a vehicle and travel through Bradford. I once spoke with a fella who claimed he had driven in New Delhi and that it wasn't as bad as Bradford. A sensationalist claim, but I'm inclined to believe him.
I think I've covered most of it. I've been typing a while and fed up tbh.
On a personal note. To those who like to point out the good places in Bradford, Shipley (why this is considered a decent part I've no idea) Saltaire, Bingley, Haworth, Skipton. Ask anyone from these places if they consider themselves as living in Bradford, the answer will nearly always be a resounding..."Fuck no"
And as for "there's beautiful countryside surrounding Bradford" the optimal word there being...'surrounding' as in, far from anything resembling Bratfudd.
Common-Spend5000@reddit
Culturally divided hits the nail on the head, and it feels more divided than in other former Mill towns and cities.
Bradford reminds me a lot of the rougher parts of Northern Ireland in that way, whenever I've been there.
Holme Wood, as you mention it, especially reminds of the sketchier Loyalist estates in Belfast.
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
I can't believe you just listed five guys as something positive and "hip". You really are from Bradford!
Worried_Bed_8324@reddit
Iv been in Bradford 2 years, They recently did it up and looks nice but it's unfortunately full of crack heads taking poos everywhere, homeless people sleeping all over (I feel bad for them), drug dealers, anti social teens and road men. It's not a town for white people.Ā
michaelington@reddit
The physical side of Bradford is lovely. Like you said, the water feature and the architecture is great. I even have a soft spot for some of the brutalist architecture that remains. The broadway on an evening looks quite beautiful when itās all lit up on a night.
I donāt like to say this, but the problem is the people. A walk through Bradford would demonstrate this quite easily. A large amount which are addicts or in poverty. Itās clear that any business that opens will not suit the demographic of Bradford.
Bradfords last chance for me was circa 2016. The council offered investment opportunities within the centre and North parade was buzzing for a couple of years. Broadway had just opened. Sunbridge wells had opened. This was a regeneration of the tunnels under Bradford centre which were converted into shops and bars. A really cool and niche idea. This should have been what Bradford needed. The football team was doing relatively well too. I actually thought Bradford was going somewhere. For whatever reason, this didnāt work. I do think Leeds being so close doesnāt help.
Nothing nice lasts here. People are too poor to afford nice things and the people that are not poor will go to Leeds. I think that sums it up.
I love Bradford, itāll always be home and it makes me sad to see that itās such a dump.
The old odeon will be reopened this year as a gig venue. Another brilliant idea. It will not last. Does the demographic of Bradford require a gig venue? No. It needs to pull people in from surrounding areas and I struggle to see this happening. I would absolutely love to be wrong. Halifax has done it so why canāt we? I have no doubt someone will mess it up somehow.
Things that last in Bradford are pound shops, pound bakeryās, betting shops, vape shops, charity shops, cash converters.
evenstevens280@reddit
Bradford should really be a top tier city. It's got a good location in the country, great road and rail connections, plenty of history and culture, plenty of lovely architecture and attractions... It just... is shit.
I grew up close by and remember going to the city as a kid. It always seemed really nice. We stopped going in favour of Leeds at some point. I remember going back to Bradford as a 20-something and wow - I get why we stopped going.
remountro@reddit

TurbulentData961@reddit
Yea nothing to do with lack of industry and anyone with a brain leaving the place for a well paying job since the 90s
Beorma@reddit
They're racist dog whistling. Birmingham has the same demographics but not the same problems, but they'll ignore that.
tkylivin@reddit
Good joke.
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
I'm confused by this comment. Are you saying that Bradford is just as good as Birmingham and everybody is in fact just lying because they are racists?
I've been to both cities and Birmingham is nothing like Bradford. Brum is like London. I actually prefer Brum to London.
Bradford is an absolute shit hole.
Beorma@reddit
No, I'm saying the opposite. Both are cities with large Asian populations, and the dog whistlers are blaming the state of cities entirely on those populations.
But Brum is in a much better state than Bradford, so their argument doesn't hold.
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
Here's an idea, let's prove your side of the argument. Let us deal with the dog whistles once and for all.
I invite you to Bradford, walk around with a gay pride and star of David flag and see what happens. If you do it and let me film it, I'll bet you a grand.
If you haven't been physically assaulted or killed by the end of it, you win a grand. Else, I win a grand.
I'm in Bradford next weekend, so put your money where your mouth is and let's celebrate the peaceful non racist people of Bradford and their never-ending tolerance of diversity.
Of course we all know that like most left wingers, you're all talk and don't even believe your own rhetoric, else you'd be here collecting an easy grand.
Edit: Sorry, when are you messaging me to set this up, I still haven't received a message?
Beorma@reddit
On a scale of 1-10, how bad are you at reading? Because I told you that Birmingham wasn't as bad as Bradford, clarified that Birmingham wasn't as bad as Bradford, and then you spat this unrelated verbal diarrhea out at me still thinking the opposite of what I said.
Now to address your nonsensical ranting:
I live in Bradford, and while you might get heckled with a gay pride flag or star of david...you won't get assaulted. Considering they have a gay pride event in the city centre every year...you'd think all these murders would make the news?
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
I can't tell if you are trolling at this point, so I'll just give up trying to respond to all that.
Instead, I'll just ask..
Do you think being Heckled for being gay is acceptable in modern multicultural Britain?
TurbulentData961@reddit
No I'm saying both are full of South Asians but one was fucked with no condom by thatcher and its been a poverty and addiction filled brain drain ever since .
I'm also saying people saying bradford is fucked because of Asians are racist since its not like Birmingham is fucked ( you know better than me on Brum )
-Blue_Bull-@reddit
I still have no idea what you are talking about.
I'm not going to visit Birmingham because there are Asians there, what are you on? Spark Hill is full of Asians and that place is a dump too.
yummychocolatebunnny@reddit
Birmingham absolutely has the same problems
TurbulentData961@reddit
Yep
Fit_Manufacturer4568@reddit
It doesn't have great rail connections. That's one of its major problems. The train lines are a bit of dogs dinner.
evenstevens280@reddit
Doesn't it have direct services to Leeds, Huddersfield, York, Manchester and London?
CaradocX@reddit
Yes. But Bradford is sat in a geographical basin. There are few routes out of the city that don't involve getting up a gradient. This is why Bradford has two stations. Both of which are termini. From Leeds you can go North, South, East or West. From Bradford you can only go South or West from the Interchange. You can also go East to Leeds, but to go East, you first have to travel West out of the Interchange and then do a massive 180 curve around the city. The trains are a bit better now, but the old rolling stock up to about 2005 could only take that route at about 10mph and the screeching of the wheels on that commute was like sitting between two banshees. If you want to go North, you have to walk across the whole of town to get to Forster Square station.
Bradford does have direct services, but they are completely inadequate to a major city. They just about cover the needs of a commuter service to Leeds.
As for bus connections. Try getting the direct X6 bus from Leeds to Bradford in rush hour. Stand at the bus stop and watch them whiz past you for hours refusing to stop because they are jam packed full. Completely inadequate for the need.
Beorma@reddit
Does it have better connections than Leeds though?
evenstevens280@reddit
No. Leeds has fantastic connections
Beorma@reddit
Exactly. People won't choose Bradford over Leeds based on connectivity.
evenstevens280@reddit
I never said they would?
Fit_Manufacturer4568@reddit
A shit and slow connection to all bar Leeds and London. The train to Manchester is very slow. Plus it used a dead end station and had to go out the way it came in.
Beautiful_Net2409@reddit

Every_Piece_5139@reddit

CaradocX@reddit
Even the pound shops are closing down...
We'll have to see what this latest round of regeneration brings. Knowing how utterly corrupt the council is, I have been extremely pessimistic so far (and the new block of completely unnecessary and still 100% empty offices next to the courts has not improved my outlook), however now that the new market, the renovation of the Odeon, the regeneration of the tower blocks along Manchester Road into new build estates and the reorganisation of the road network are all starting to take shape, I can see that some actual thought has gone into the place this time instead of the utter mess that was the planning and execution of Broadway or the transferral of the massive eight floor central library into a poxy two tiny rooms. The forced redevelopment or replacement of the Interchange is no bad thing either. In a few years it will look like a brand new city centre.
The question is, how long will it retain that look?
Porkchop_Express99@reddit
Hardly any jobs, retail and nightlife are dire (Marks and Spencers have just announced they're pulling out of the city), chronic lack of investment and infrastructure development.
The square you mentioned is a magnet for drunks and drug addicts. It's really not pleasant, especially after 5pm.
The thing with Bradford is its one of the largest cities in the country, and in its heyday was the richest in the world.
It has some very miserable stats as well, some recent ones were it has the highest rate of retail closures in Yorkhsire (I think).
For people like me who remember it 25-30 years ago it's regressed so much you wouldn't think it could get so bad - there are some bad places out there, but I don't think city any gone backwards as much as Bradford has.
CleanMyTrousers@reddit

I think it's proximity to Leeds also hampers it. I live in Bradford council district, would never think to go shopping, to the cinema or out for a meal there when Leeds is so close.
Porkchop_Express99@reddit
I live in the North of the city, somewhere in BD17. We never go unless it's something we can't get elsewhere. Kid goes to a local school up here - we know the parents in our circle are the same as us. Barely step into the centre.
If we want to go out we go to Saltaire, Bingley, Guiseley, Ilkley, Skipton... apart from the odd hour or drink, the last night out I had in Bradford was nearly 8 years ago.
I've been to Halifax more times that Bradford in last year or so for shopping / a ganeral day out. They've got their shit together much more.
Desperate_Office_454@reddit
I live in Baildon but do not understand why people are so anti-Bradford - especially with children. We have a few decent museums within and nearby. The centre over summer was full of young families enjoying the fountains. I find it sad that people are so snooty about it. I work there and the vibe is good. I grew up with Asians and I can only think itās an unconscious or overt racial bias. Over Christmas there was so much happening in Broadway for the kids. People -especially this year of Culture 2025 - need to get over themselves and look at what we have got rather than what we havenāt. Additionally, the places you mention (except Guiseley) are Bradford anyway.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
I live near you I think. We actually go out to Barnsley more often then Bradford. It will take a lot to recover from that.
Porkchop_Express99@reddit
I don't think it will.
When I first started going out in the 90s, Bradford arguably had the vest alterative music scene in the North, maybe outside London. It was a big pull every weekend for nightlife, while Leeds was seen as the more upmarket / 'clubby' night out.
There's the odd bar now, North Parade is alright but not as good as it was.
Bradford Live will improve things somewhat as it'll help create some business around it, but the problem is the current nightlife is spread so thin it'll pull the people who do go out away from North Parade and Sunbridge Wells.
And eating out in the centre is awful. Absolutely dire. For the reputation we have for curries, there's not one good place in the city centre itself.
i_smoked_salt@reddit
I went to the Fozzy gig at nighttrain in Bradford the other day and it was literally a Saturday night but the place was like a ghost town. Nighttrain itself was packed during the gig but once it was over it was like they couldnāt get out fast enough. Also some guy started creepily massaging my shoulders from behind thinking I was a girl (long hair) so I see why people stay away lol
Porkchop_Express99@reddit
Ever go to Rios?
One of the last gigs there was Kreator on a Saturday I think, the place wss full.
I remember being in the gents and 2 blokes were having a talk, one from Liverpool, the other from Newcastle. They were both saying it was the closest venue for them that regularly had this sort of music on (more than Manchester I think at the time), they always came and stayed over / made a weekend of it when a gig was on. They didn't know what the going to when it closed.
Yes, bands started going to Manchester more, but that was the real niche Bradford had - no forced, remedial 'City of Culture' award or artificial 'culture' created by councils and art groups.
i_smoked_salt@reddit
Iām 22 now so I definitely wasnāt of age when Rioās was around š Iāve heard about it though, I know a guy who used to work there. He said it was one of the best places heās ever worked even though the girls got more tips than him š
Porkchop_Express99@reddit
I know it seems like eons ago, but a lot of us (I'm mid 40s) can remember the centre being a really vibrant place for all types of people and interests.
You'd have bands from all over the world come here on tour. They'd play like London, then maybe Bradord or Rock City. It was a great place if you were into extreme /niche bands.
We had a few good record shops, and music shops (i.e real instruments) that were part of that scene. All long gone.
i_smoked_salt@reddit
Man that sucks, nowadays if you walk through Bradford wearing anything that indicates you might be into alternative music, you get barked at by chavs. Literally barked at like dogs, or they scream āEMO!!!ā at you. Iām in an alt band myself and we wouldnāt dream of playing Bradford (no crowd, plus weād probably get jumped by said chavs) so to hear it was such a hotspot for our kind of music not long ago is pretty sad.
Tbf instrument shops everywhere are dying out. I snapped two of the strings on my bass guitar recently and went out to two different cities in search of somewhere to buy some new ones, only to realise most of the music shops on Google are now permanently closed. Had to give up and order some online, which I felt pretty guilty about because online shopping is exactly why these places are having to close down.

As well as the real problems, Bradford also has a very high proportion (for the UK, at least) of first and second generation asian immigrants. It's why it gets lumped in with Birmingham and other places as the alleged "no go zones for whites" in the UK, or "UK under shariah law". Sometimes the anti-Bradford stuff is coded racism.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
While this is generally understood to refer to an irrational generalised fear of muslims whihc canot be justified by any sort of statistics, there are pretty good and statistically rational reasons to fear what Bradford has become.
Its not all down to Muslims, its as much down to poverty, white flight and the collapse of local industry, but it's disingenuous to claim that the insular and non-integrating nature of the immigrant-descended communities of Bradford isnt part of the overall problem here

CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
I don't live in a city and would hang myself before being forced to. But safety deposit box companies are a side effect of a large Asian population. Cultural need for lots of gold jewellery..and a security need not to keep it at home
AF_II@reddit
I said "sometimes" not "always".
Anti-Bradford stuff is parroted by people who have never been there, know nothing about the UK, etc. and who aren't basing it on actual experience but assumptions and vibes.
Significant_Spare495@reddit

I never had a problem with more recently, but in the past some Pakistanis told that was very much the case - both ways around, it was very ghettoised and if your skin colour was wrong you'd have real trouble.
There's still significant racism on all sides (as seen by a white friend of mine that knew enough to understand what Pakistanis were saying about him when they thought they he couldn't understand.)
xParesh@reddit
I was born there and left as a kid. Iām brown but look more Mediterranean in terms of skin tone. Even I have had racial abuse by the Pakistani kids there because they seem to think I might be white. Bradford is so god forsaken, it should be nuked from orbit.

Yeah the idea that this stuff doesn't happen is just ignorance. Some friends and I were attacked in Dewsbury at night by a gang of Asian youths. There are areas of the country in which being white can be dangerous. Deflecting from facts with cries of racism doesn't help anybody.

jsm97@reddit (OP)
I think there's a difference between high levels of an immigrant population and a poorly distributed/integrated immigrant population.
I would argue than London (and possibly central Manchester) is the only place in Britain that is truly multicultural. You have white English, Caribbean, Chinese, French, Polish and Indians living together in close proximity. In cities like Leicster you have a white English area, a south Asian area and an African or Eastern European area with little cultural mixing. That isn't multiculturalism. That's a failure of goverment policy
The_39th_Step@reddit
Iād agree regarding London and Manchester. The outskirts of Greater Manchester are much more segregated (Oldham and Rochdale) but the centre is much more cosmopolitan and international.

I've been attacked in the street because of my skin colour (white). I've also been in a restaurant listening to a young asian man who was quite calmly but loudly telling his mates about how he hated white people and was going to murder us all.
There's plenty of racism in Bradford. None of it comes from the white people who live here.
TuMek3@reddit
None of it? Really?
CaradocX@reddit
I've live in and around Bradford for 20+ years. Attended the University. Attended the College. Taught at the College. Worked at numerous schools and other places in Bradford. Been involved in the local arts scene. I've met, known and worked with hundreds, maybe even thousands of Bradfordians. My next door neighbour is related to JB Priestley. Short of being born here, I'm as Bradfordian as it gets.
I've yet to hear a single racist word from any white person here. Trust me, any white racists in Bradford left long ago.
Let me recount you one story.
I was doing private tutoring for a Pakistani student of mine at the time. Third generation Bradfordian. This was a few years ago so I paraphrase a bit.
I rocked up as the family were coming home. Dad is in the car spitting feathers over the new neighbours who were burning rubbish in the garden. Goes over to have 'words'. When he comes back he apologises to me that I had to see that, and in a broad Yorkshire accent starts complaining about the 'bloody Bangladeshi neighbours' who were bringing the street down. This had been a nice street when his family moved in some decades ago.
Made me chuckle (at the irony).
Now. What's your experience of Bradford?

An urban planner once told me that Bradford really slipped up by allowing major roads right through the city centre. Leeds, by contrast, made a conscious decision to protect the Victorian arcades, the covered markets and the Corn Exchange. Consequently Leeds has an entirely walkable centre which makes shopping, and office-based business much more pleasant. Bradford by contrast has been chopped into pieces and too many shoddy office blocks and shopping centres built in the place of the handsome Victorian buildings that used to be there. Even now, you turn a corner and thereās a really magnificent building marooned in a sea of tat.

The architecture of Bradford is amazing. Most of it dates back to when the wool and cloth trade made it a fantastically wealthy city.Ā
A lot of colonial workers were brought over to help keep up with the demand.Ā
Then the make up of industry changed and the city ended up poorer as a result as the mills closed.Ā
Itās also struggled to make a new name for itself due to the close proximity of Leeds. All the new wealth and commercial prospects all went there, even at a social level a lot of the nightlife declined as a night out in Leeds was a better option which meant the only people going out in Bradford are those wanting to drink on a budget.Ā
Many of the businesses in the city are now just fronts for people laundering money, there is still a lot of wealth in the city but the legality of it is very questionable.Ā

There's a serious lack of pride in Britain when it comes to preserving Industrial revolution heritage. It's looked down upon imo. The lions share of the Heritage money funding traditionally goes to the estates of the landed gentry and Royalty. Attitudes are changing. But far too slowly and much has been lost in the process.

There are so many hand car washes, 99p chicken shops /barbers and, more recently, an explosion of shipping container businesses. There is a strong feeling, especially with the containers that they are set up for money laundering. Or, even if legit, to distract from the illegal ones.
One of the stories in the Bradford paper this week this week was one shipping container had applied retrospectively for planning permission 6 times and had it turned down every time (for car parking, I think). Some locals are thinking it's a distraction as I mentioned above.

VERY occasionally legitimate businesses do, shipping containers are fairly cheap and flexible.

The biggest problem Bradford has is Leeds. It sucks out all the talent (because the average wages are getting on for TWICE what Bradford pays), it's easy to get to with two cheap rail routes taking you there, and so it sucks out all the talent, all the money, and all the destinations that people want to go to.
Leaving Bradford with the shit ends of everything - which is why it has the problems it has.

The biggest issue with Bradford, is it's occupants - they're mostly hateful, tracksuit wearing tosspots.
You only have to spend a bit of time there to see what I mean, it's absolutely lawless, full of thugs and crime is a daily occurrence on the most part.
You see young Asians driving around like Colin McRae in (often stolen), unregistered cars.
Sure, these issues are in every city, but there's something different about it and just the look and feel of the place puts me on edge.
Also, do not ever buy a car from Bradford, unless it's like a proper main dealer.

Saying "people of culture" (a term created to replace "people of colour") is still problematic in just the same way. It's a weird term to use as it's clearly intended to be more inclusive but somehow ignores the logic that stopped us using the original term.
Every nation has a mix of cultures, and othering specific groups with this term doesn't exactly help enable the integration these communities so desperately need.

I live in Bradford, near the town centre, and i'll tell you exactly what's wrong with Bradford as a whole.
1) Bradford Council are a bunch of money grabbing cunts and constantly look after there own pocket and constantly increase council tax each year with no improvement in anyones life e.g. doing a cycle lane all through major city centre route and now scrapping it because no one actually uses it, literally pissing money up the walls. Every Jan-March they do a lot of road improvements so it gives them reasons to get more money for the new year which causes misery to every driver in the city.
2) The driving standards are low, too many uninsured drivers or ones that buy policy off social media thinking they have full insurance when they do not and not enough police patrols to clamp down and arrest.
3) Too many ethnic minorities (am a minority) are benefit scroungers, and stay at home wives. The men in the household can't be bothered working most of the time but get full benefits because they have a disability e.g. mental health, which is easy to fool a GP with, but realistically, it's because their parents are related they tend to be a looney.
4) Boys parked up in unlit areas smoking weed or doing baloons (gas inhaling)
5) Lack of jobs, major ones are Vanquis Bank/Provident Group, Santander HQ & Yorkshire Building Society being thr major employers in Bradford which is a monopoly for treating staff like shit knowing they can't go anywhere.
6) No social clubs/ youth centres for teenagers, which in turn causes ASBO
7) Town centre is a dead beat place, nothing exciting happens unless you're getting robbed, also too many vape, mobile shops as well as bookies.
These are just a tip of the ice berg of what the problems are in Bradford
Scarboroughwarning@reddit
I think Bradford will be the next council to declare bankruptcy.
Head_Of_TheTable@reddit
Wouldn't suprise me. They love pissing money up the wall for ridiculous things. I genuinely think all councils should be investigated to where the money actually goes and who comes up with stupid ideas to do stupid things.
pizzainmyshoe@reddit
It's not pissing up money, basically council budgets now are all going to social care and that's had massive inflation and the privatisation of it has let to care companies making massive profits.
Head_Of_TheTable@reddit
But at the same Bradford council are spending £12million on a city centre cycle lane HOPING people use it, which is bollocks. In the same way, they spent £80k on a cycle lane on Wakefield Road, which is scrapped because no one bloody used it. So yes, they are pissing money up on things that doesnt require consultation from the public.
Dry_Pick_304@reddit
The cycle lane is a right joke. Current road works in the city center have been going on for 8 months, and still not due to be complete until christmas.

It's called a city but despite wider Bradford covering a massive area the centre is pretty small, you can walk from one end to the other in 10 minutes. Generally speaking the entire Bradford area is quite poor, there are lots of grand old buildings but you'll be hard pressed to find a 'nice area' that's bigger than a couple of streets unless you go into the villages on the outskirts which probably wouldn't class themselves as being Bradford. It used to be a massive manufacturing base but now a lot of this has gone abroad. There were a few banks and the HMRC who moved in which helped to replace the lost jobs but a lot of these have also been moving elsewhere since the early 00s. There are now very few decent jobs, anyone wanting much beyond social care work probably ends up working in Leeds. The city centre is devoid of people most of the time and the 'top end' is mostly abandoned by traders. 25+ years ago it would have been heaving but they built retail parks on the outskirts of the city, massive supermarkets sprung up all over and at the same time the council made it more difficult to get into by car which caused a rapid decline and then internet shopping started. The only people who do bother shopping in the centre tend to be those that travel by bus and there ain't that many of them. The city centre probably has more flats in it than shops and offices. In recent years there has been a big increase in rough sleepers but I believe this is the same everywhere. The area around the city hall that you referred to is actually pretty nice, especially in the summer, though if the police aren't around it can be a hotspot for small groups of pissheads and druggies who can be a smelly nuisance. It is a relatively safe city centre, you're less likely to get hassled or robbed etc than most (probably because there's no bugger in it). The one thing that is definitely booming in Bradford is takeaways. The main arteries running through the 'asian' areas in particular are heaving with them, I'm not exaggerating when I say they go on for miles in some cases and these areas are much busier than the city centre.

The people that live in Bradford believe in a sky god that will grant every good citizen a mansion with 40 virgins in it. Everybody gets a mansion, am I'm really not quoting Ricky Gervais.
Think about the logistics of this, and then honestly ask yourself what's wrong with Bradford, and other places that have large concentrations of religious people.
It's totally crazy and doesn't belong in the modern world, let alone the UK.

Bradford is also home to a number of druggies who inhabit the town centre on a daily basis. While they have treated me to the spectacle of starting two fistfights with random passers by on two separate and consecutive occasions while I was having lunch at Wetherspoons, I also recall watching a massive fleet of rented supercars arriving down White Abbey road into town. These convoys are an occasional nuisance from a certain contingent of the young male asian community who like to look as flash as possible and beep their horns to get people to look at them achieving nothing of consequence.
As they were coming down the hill in both lanes but slow because of the inner ring road traffic, at least two dozen of them. There appeared in their midst, the dirtiest beggar you ever saw, in a wheel chair, with one leg, rolling down the hill in convoy with them. He got a massive cheer and applause from the crowd on the pavement. Legend.

It's upsetting hearing people talk about Bradford in such a derogatory way. BUT, as a South Asian Muslim man who grew up in an Asian dominant area in Bradford, I can't deny many people's complaints.
Some backwards culture being an issue. I fortunately now live in a much nicer city with a large Muslim community that's very involved with it's city and non-Muslim neighbours who are very happy and full of pride regarding their city. Which is a stark difference to Bradford only difference being is the south Asians Muslim are a minority amongst a minority.
Education is on a lower standard. I can attest to this, as speaking to family and friends who schooled outside of West Yorkshire had drastically better experiences and opportunities.
Crime is rife. I'd relate that to a combination of a lack of education and austerity. The roads are horrific. I do about 15k a year across the north and London and have never seen worse road etiquette than Bradford drivers. Hate driving there and worry about the other half when she does.
I'm not gonna protend I have a solution. Loads of my friends and family live happy and successful lives in Bradford of both white, Asian and Ethiopian descent. I couldn't do it. I feel for those who don't have a choice.

Google is always gonna show the best of any place tbh. The times Iāve been there the streets are littered with needles and glass and god knows what else. You donāt wanna walk past the Drum and Winder pub because you will get leered at by crackheads/junkies. You mentioned the water featureā I used to work security and we did an event in Bradford centenary square, water feature was on, ended up having to escort a man out of the event because he was taking pictures of the kids playing in there and when asked which one was his he couldnāt point to one (not the first time thatās happened apparently.) My mate used to live in the Velvet Mills (one of the more āupmarketā apartment blocks in Bradford) and even though it was literally opposite a police station you could smell weed and tobacco all down the corridors, which would be littered with wrappers and bin bags and bottles. Thereās no nightlife, last time I was in Bradford was a Saturday night and it was like a ghost town. Every time I go there I get jeered at or hit on by men thinking Iām a girl (long hair). It doesnāt feel safe whatsoever, especially at night, and I canāt imagine what itās like for actual women. I literally spend the majority of my time out of the house in Sheffield despite living closer to Bradford (Leeds isnāt rly my scene). Also Broadway sucks, full of gormless idiots who will be walking in front of you and then suddenly stop to look at their phone, kids running around screaming and getting under everyoneās feet, and thereās about one shop with an affordable menās section. I challenge anyone to go in there and leave without a headache.
On top of that, the council might as well be run by monkeys operating typewritersā I used to know someone who worked there, and he told me this guy transferred from the youth service to the Covid team, got caught sending inappropriate texts to his 17 year old coworker (he was in his 50s), and rather than fire him the higher-ups quietly transferred him back to the youth service. THE YOUTH SERVICE.

It was a huge textiles city that went into decline from the 1950s onwards and has struggled to reinvent itself so has a lot of poor areas. It drew in huge waves of migrants, originally to work in the textile mills. If you avoid the bad areas it's nice and the people are friendly. Wouldn't have said it is as rough as a lot of London to be honest.

I don't know an awful lot about Bradford but I did go there once for work. I was sat at some traffic lights by a pub when a guy walked out the front door of the pub, unzipped himself in front of the whole queue of cars and proceeded to take a leak into a drain at the edge of the road. Zipped up and went back into the pub. This was about 2pm on a weekday about 5 years ago. That was my takeaway from my day in Bradford.

Here's a recent walk round of the town centre. As you can see loads of shops are empty and a big shopping centre is due for demolition soon. There was a thing recently on the news here it's was something like 20% of shops in an average town are shit but in Bradford it's 30% can't remember why they said it but tbh all the towns apart from Leeds near by are very similar.

It is a lack of public transport which makes it hard to get around and access jobs and opportunities. You can see this with the places along the airedale line being nicer as they can get to leeds quickly and access economic opportunity. Two terminal train stations make it hard to going from north of the city to south and the trains that do go there are local whereas in leeds you can get a train and basically go directly anywhere in the country. Even the direct train to london from Bradford Interchange is only like 5 times a day and spends an hour winding its way around west yorkshire. And transport in the city is just dire, it's just buses and they're slow and the frequency just keeps getting worse. Look at an old tram map they used to go everywhere and a modern tram system would help things. The ruhr and West Yorkshire/Northern England are quite similar but the ruhr has a massive integrated system of buses, trams, undergrounds and regional trains and that has helped to reduce decline there.

Grew up on the outskirts, you used to fear for your life when going into the centre.
As a lot of others have said, it's generally the people that are the reason. With it being quite cheap housing it used to attract a lot of people who aren't the nicest, so it got terrible reputation for crime and anti-social behaviour.
As with all places though, there's a lot of shit places and there are some nicer areas such as on the outskirts. Maningham always had the worst reputation, I'm not sure if it's improved.
It's had a lot of investment recently, at least in the centre so it looks quite nice now.
When I moved out of the Bradford postcode, my car insurance got a lot cheaper as there was a lot of crime there.
Used to go to the Alhambra a lot when we were young, last time I saw it during the day time though it looked really decrepit and run down. The only reason I'd go there now was for the bank and the Waterstones.
I think they're finally sorting out some of the huge old buildings along Valley Road now, they were derelict for many years. I think that'll be nice.
It's been a while since I've been though, things most likely have changed during the COVID and cost of living crisis times.

I lived there for a year. We did live right in the top North Western corner though, almost at a point where there was nothing but fields to the West of us. If you went the other way down towards the town the atmosphere got more and more well, Bradfordy. You only really understand what I mean if you know the place well. The two cultures (white and Asian) live sort of out of phase of each other but in the same space. I've lived in a rough part of Keighley too and both places were same, there is no point in even trying to have a relationship with Asian neighbours. There is definitely an atmosphere of complete lawlessness too. Then there are odd pockets of unusualness like the 1 in 12 Club for example (an anarchist club).

Around the edges there's your typical suburbia and a quick look on Street View (I've been to Bradford once, to the TV and Film museum, didn't seem that bad driving in but can't remember it much) shows a mix of normal semi-detached 1930s housing and those older Victorian terraces built from that yellow stone you get in Yorkshire. No where appears to be on fire or looking like a WW2 bomb site.
As someone from Liverpool, there were places in Liverpool even in the 1980s that literally looked like the "10 years after the attack" scene from Threads. Like Liverpool, most places in the UK look much better than they did 30 or even 20 years ago.
Sticking my neck out, and having heard "Bradford is a shit hole" a lot over the years, I'm basically going to say it is probably racism. Bradford, like most of the UK, was vast majority white British until the 1970s and has had a massively expanding ethnic population since then, I think faster and to a greater level than any other city in the UK (presumably excluding parts of London). Non-white people are still a minority as in all the UK, but at 33% Asian, it's a significant number.
So my guess is probably that it stems from racist types saying the usual "this country is being taken over by (insert racial slur here)" combined with it not exactly being a pretty city in the first place being a product of the Industrial Revolution and then suffering from the decline in industry a century later.
Zombi1146@reddit
This 100%, the reputation stems from racism, just like the Luton one.
I've visited the Bradford suburbs many times and it's an unremarkable northern English town. But, I visited the town centre once about 20 years ago and it was a wasteland, everything was shut and dilapidated, can't imagine how bad it is now.

Fabulous_Plenty_1144@reddit
It's to do with how the demographics are placed within the geography of the city.
The town centre is multicultural, but immediately surrounding it on every side is 90%+ non-white. You can't get into the centre without going through those areas. The postcodes beyond that are mostly mixed and then further out it gets predominantly white.
So essentially anyone going to Bradford will spend most of their time in central areas that are like you say 66%+ non-white, but the overall data is pulled down by suburbs much further out as well as the rural areas and whatnot.
King_0f_Nothing@reddit
Nah its not racism, as someone who lived in a village between Leeds and Bradford. I can confirm that Bradford is a shit hole. Walk round the city center shops in the middle of the day and you will see drug dealers and prostitutes on the corners.

I visit Bradford every week for work. My biggest issues are poor driving every turn and people not looking after their properties. Basically itās a big city but the city center is small and pointless. There are very limited shops and if you live nearby you might as well go to Leeds.
They have done work to make it nicer but thereās still not a massive amount to do there. Itās a pretty city if you think of the architecture etc but beyond that itās just not that attractive
It has fairly rough areas too. Like anywhere I guess. But coupled with everything else it doesnāt help.
Thereās not any draw to the city so modern high paying work isnāt really there either. And because of that the people who could be successful move away. And that creates a cycle of less businesses meaning less jobs meaning less candidates so even less businesses want to open.

Bradford was a mill town, and suffers the same problems a bunch of similar towns in the north do. When the mills closed, unemployment went up, and average wages went down. This led to the increase in crime and antisocial behaviour that increases in poverty always lead to. That being said in a lot of ways people are exaggerating as they do about a lot of places, Bradford still has nice areas as well as the rough, and is large enough to support cinemas, theatres, restaurants, and plenty of other amenities.

It's very economically deprived: few employment opportunities and a lot of people living on very low incomes. Health outcomes are worse there than many other places. It has some very insular cultural groups living there. It has few cultural activities. There's a strong drain of more skilled, higher income, and ambitious people to Leeds (or places further away) which leaves Bradford with only lower skilled, lower income people. That affects the local economy and also the local services, as there are more people needing public services but fewer people to pay into them.
