I miss my cd binder. I don't have a cd player but browsing was fun.

You didn’t have a collection if you didn’t have at least 1 booklet stolen (from your car, during a house party, what have you)

My binder was lost to a junk yard. Some classics in there I’m gonna miss.

Left mine behind in my divorce. We had combined our collection and I decided it was too much work to take just mine out. I did, however, take all the spare tooth brushes.

My CDs were all neatly organized on a shelf at my dad's house. Then I started packing up to move out and discovered at least 50% of the actual CDs were missing with the jewel cases left in place. My stepsister didn't even like the same kind of music I did; she was just a bitch.

that you were white and middle class lol Crazy how segregated musically we all were compared to todays generation. Guilty of it as well. I'm black latina so mine was lots of rap, latin pop, and rmb.
View on Reddit #20989129

junko_kv626@reddit

I hate that our music was segregated. I got ripped on for listening to Mariah Carey. Now I feel cheated because I missed out on so much music, Run DMC, Selena, Living Color (the band), and others.
View on Reddit #20992402

Material-Imagination@reddit

Same! I'm making up for lost time now, although I did hear a lot of hip hop classics from the rich write kids at my school I'm so curious if it was a teenage "forming my identity" thing, a peer pressure thing, or specifically just the times we lived in. I mean, I know those first two factors play into it no matter what, but I hope it's not as bad anymore.
View on Reddit #20995872

My son is 12 and has a diverse mix of friends, but they all listen to 'everything' from rap to pop to even country, and a lot of classic rock. I would have been stabbed by my friends if I listened to country lol

littlewing745@reddit

I just wrote OP needed more black friends 😂 I had the best of all worlds: I was a black kid from NYC that moved to Atlanta in the 90s and went to a predominantly white private school. Nothing fucking got by me, man. I heard it all 😂😂😂
View on Reddit #20992483

EccentricAcademic@reddit

I will argue this...I had a way more diverse cd collection in the mid nineties thanks to the popularity of R&B and black girl groups and what not. But then I went into the stereotypical awkward white dude alternative/rock spiral.
View on Reddit #20994971

FriendlyPea805@reddit

Uh, many of us white kids were banging hip hop along with rock/metal/grunge back in the day.
View on Reddit #20992598

panjier84@reddit

Buddy you grew up in Atlanta. That’s why you had hip hop. This was probably a north eastern or mid western kid (maybe SoCal but I’d like to think it would be a little more diverse there as well). I’m white and born and raised in SC. I had that section in my binder as well as all the country and I lived in a predominately black town, so I had a lot of hip hop, r&b, and soul music. The only thing I really missed out on was Latin music, but thanks to my Mexican wife I am slowly catching up.
View on Reddit #20994951

CelebrationKey@reddit

there is always outliers. Personally, none of my friends or family listened to grunge or rock, at least not publicly. I had no white friends until I was much older.

I am an 84 baby and I have a few cds like this but due to circumstances I didn’t have too many. But my husband (born 76) found his box of cd binders I was super excited to go through and he had some cool stuff in there. He worked at a radio station right after high school and did some graphic art stuff for bands local stuff and because of that he was able to meet Manson and a few other smaller then but blew up soon after artists. But because of that he has tons of signed band shirts and cds. What’s weird is our child took out all his memorabilia, and with his permission took his non signed shirts and other various clothing and took his boxes of CD binders because apparently she and her roommates listen to a CD player on cleaning days.

It was. I joined the military in 1996, went to bootcamp the last week of 1995 actually (left for bootcamp the day after XMas 95) . When I got out 2½ months later, I remember when I finally got near a TV, I put on MTV to see what videos may have came out in the time I was away from TV. I remember specifically seeing Tonight Tonight, and Insomniac/Jaded by Green Day. This would have been spring of 96. Both videos were cool for the time. Different from anything else. Go watch them now..... it seems so dated. Time flies. That was 28 years ago now. Feels even weirder to type that out.

I know a lot of Slayer fans don’t particularly like this album, but I fucking love Diabolous In Musica. Bitter Peace and In The Name Of God are bangers. I personally would have trashed this whole collection. Get some of that good rap in there man, no need to be stuck in ‘77

Sounds like you’re limited as a listener. All my friends surrounded me with great hip hip from 85-99 and funk/soul/reggae from like 65-95. These were only like 1/3 of my CDs. And at least 1/3 of these were from the 80s-90s probably

At least you wrote album and artists on everything! I have quite a few labeled "rap" or "dance" It's a total crapshoot when I play one, so actually kinda fun I guess

Totally. Then, I got a discman that could read mp3s. I’d burn countless hours of music onto a CD. Also spent hours fine tuning playlists, making cover art, and slipping it all into a jewel case. Kids these days will never know. Now it’s just spotify playlists.
