I just realized that Christian Bale is OUR GUY. From childhood to adulthood.

Are there any other actors as respected as Bale, who have been in consistently good movies their entire career from childhood? I know he’s had a few stinkers, but I can’t think of too many other actors whose bodies of work are so solid.
Fair_Active_3373@reddit
He's my fav actor but Sadly he has no romance movies like The Note Book,500 days of summer, Titanic I wanna see him in a romance movie but I think I will never be able to see him in a romance movie bc he's old😞
Th3seViolentDelights@reddit
I truly think Christian Bale in Newsies was my sexual awakening. First movie obsession and looking back it's kinda obvious why haha
rarepinkhippo@reddit
I think Jack Kelly was also THE formative character (and performance) that made a lot of teen/tween straight girls and gay boys want to FIX a tortured yet hot guy.

I thought OPs point was going with a Xennial actor. Keanu is firmly gen x

He's a shit actor dude lol why is reddit so obsessed with him?

Goodguybadd@reddit
He is the one
DeathCouch41@reddit
That’s my man! Although I do love me a good American Psycho, so CB can take second place.
Keanu Reeves, my boyfriend. For the past 25 years. This is the way.

I first saw him as a “newcomer” in one of those teen magazines. Fell in love that instant and that crush has never gone away
manxram@reddit
Still is!
Luce55@reddit
Did he work as a child actor? I think OP is saying that Christian Bale was in movies beginning as a child himself…(although, I def think Keanu is one of ours too.)
Another actor I love is Sean Astin…seems like a genuinely sweet person, and he definitely had a career from childhood and made great movies as an adult…although I guess he’s not quite as prolific as Bale or Keanu…
terriblystupidjoke@reddit
White Water Summer was one of my absolute favorite childhood movies. I lost count of how many times I rented and re-watched it.. a dozen times at least.
AlgoRhythMatic@reddit
Not technically a child actor - his first role was at age 20 in a Canadian show called “Hangin In”. From my POV, his 39+ years in the industry mirror a chunk of my own formative years, so close enough. I 100% agree on Sean Aston, or pretty much ANY of the actors from The Goonies!
methodwriter85@reddit
Yeah, but while we did see him playing teenagers, he wasn't an actual child star like Christian Bale and Jason Bateman were.
bump909@reddit
Except for that one quote.
guitar_stonks@reddit
Excellent! air guitar shreds
macjoven@reddit
Love him. Born in ‘64. Early gen x.
Rcararc@reddit
1964 is a baby boomer. Unless generation X has a group like xennial that I don’t know about.
Vox_Mortem@reddit
They do, but I don't know if has a name. My mom was also born in 64 so she's technically a boomer but she has always acted much more like Gen X. I guess it's fitting because 17 years later I was born into a cusp group as well.

Yeah I almost put booxer but I always associate him with Gen x and he is maybe a year out.

I loved him in Little Women.
Expensive_Art_2273@reddit
I don't know about "consistently good," but Arrested Development is one of my comfort shows and I often think how crazy it is that Jason Bateman has been around my whole life and is still going strong. It's like we grew up together. Sounds kinda parasocial, and I guess it is, ha!
ennuiismymiddlename@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I remember him on Little House on the Prairie, and Hogan’s Family - then not thinking about him again til Arrested Development, and I remember thinking “wow I can’t believe he’s THIS funny!”.
CY83rdYN35Y573M2@reddit
Ozark on Netflix is definitely worth a watch for anyone who hasn't. The whole cast is great, but Bateman is the heart of it.
BreadfruitHot2947@reddit
Laura Linney is the best actor on that show. She is the heart
NotAboutMeNotAboutU@reddit
He’s Michael Bluth in Ozark, too. They’re the same character.
hoarseclock@reddit
I don’t know shit about fuck
MyNameIsntFlower@reddit
I said that at work the other day, and my coworker and I talked about Ozark for a hot minute. It was great.
gertrudeblythe@reddit
I quote this daily.
midlifeShorty@reddit
Yeah, it seems to me that he always plays the same character. I am not a huge fan because of that. Certainly not comparable to Bale.
khrispants@reddit
In the context of Ozark I think the Michael Bluth-ness of Marty kind of keeps the show in perspective. Despite them playing pretty much the entire show straight, having Bateman slip in some of his signature awkward pauses and mini-Bluth moments reminds us of how absolutely absurd the premise of the show is and that they are aware of it.
Expensive_Art_2273@reddit
I agree on that. Bale is a class of his own acting-wise
Famous-Reputation188@reddit
I always thought that. Kind of like Malcolm in the Middle/Breaking Bad and Terminator/Matrix.
analog_jedi@reddit
My most memorable comedic appearance of his was as a minor character in a silly action flick called Smokin Aces. IDK why but it just sends me when he plays a dark character that cusses like a sailor.
commandantskip@reddit
That movie is better than it has any right to be
analog_jedi@reddit
Totally agree, the sequel was godawful though. Shoot'emup was another fun/absurd action flick I sometimes revisit, from the same era
commandantskip@reddit
Haven't seen it, but it looks like it's going in the queue!
A_shy_neon_jaguar@reddit
I had no idea Jason Bateman could play Charlie Kelly.
analog_jedi@reddit
Funny you bring up Always Sunny, because it reminds me of Cricket when he thinks he's back on the upswing.
Electric_Sundown@reddit
Did you not see his Oscar snubbed performance in the timeless classic that is Teen Wolf 2?
Gotumn@reddit
I mostly remembered him from Teen Wolf Too, but any alter ego-type movies have always stuck with me harder.
Figgywithit@reddit
Once again the Christian Bale vs. Jason Bateman argument. lol.
Expensive_Art_2273@reddit
ha is that a thing? I'm def not against CB!
Figgywithit@reddit
It's not a thing.
Moteltulsa@reddit
He was on Little House on the Prarie. Seth green is another lifer.
Expensive_Art_2273@reddit
Oh wow! Earliest I remember him from is Clueless. Never heard of this movie. Is it good?
ThisKittenShops@reddit
Except Seth Green wasn't in Clueless.
Expensive_Art_2273@reddit
oooh what am I thinking of then?? Off to IMDB...
Moteltulsa@reddit
I liked it because I had read the book and was a fan of writer John Irving. He also did The World According to Garp. It is a comedy but fair warning, THNH has scenes of incst and grpe scenes, I don’t think it holds up to modern tastes and morals.
Expensive_Art_2273@reddit
eek ok, I'll tentatively put it on the nostalgia-watch list
Moteltulsa@reddit
Definitely, look it up first. My teacher actually recommended those books to me in highschool.

MSK84@reddit
It's funny because I don't think I have seen Empire of the Sun before and I'm really surprised. It's on the list now. It's just incredible how well he can do an American accent. He's definitely one of my top five actors of all time.

BlueFox5@reddit
So has Bill Crosby. You going to call him Our Boy too?
carlitospig@reddit
I don’t see Cosby still working, do you?
BlueFox5@reddit
Working to get out of jail. Not that it matters. He had a big impact on our generation as Dr Hucksable. For the longest time he was a major influence to our generation until he got caught. You wanted to move the goal post, well now you gotta let the creeps in too.
carlitospig@reddit
We should definitely do a creep post, now that you mention it.
BlueFox5@reddit
I’m game. Crosby, Rob Lowe, Danny from Full House. Would Peewee count? Yeah he did a thing, but in a place one might expect the thing to happen, and it wasn’t like he was forcing himself on anyone.
carlitospig@reddit
Peewee definitely counts! He basically traumatized us; we had to rewrite his relationship with Chairy! 😳
BlueFox5@reddit
It’s pretty wild to rewatch that show as an adult. Like, what were my parents thinking?
Luci_Noir@reddit
I think he did get out because his conviction was overturned due to a technicality.

Imo he could go toe to toe with Daniel day Lewis. His career is basically Daniel day Lewis’s with not breaks/retirement

Bale:

My brother and I had a joke about that movie:
"The land of Faraway? Is it near here?"
We would laugh and laugh every time one of us said it. Thank you for the memory.
sleepwalkfromsherdog@reddit
Ah-hem!
Folks, Sean Astin exists. Through him, we explored caves looking for pirate treasure, flew the Memphis Belle, saved our schoolmates from terrorists, made friends with an unfrozen caveman, played football for Notre Dame, carried Frodo carrying the One Ring to Mordor, and saved the Stranger Things kids.
Only thing dude didn't do is play Spider-man (although he did voice Shazam a few times!)
carmelainparis@reddit
Great call. Bale was my first celeb crush and is unquestionably a generational talent. But Sean Astin’s a national treasure and his LOTR performance, IMO, doesn’t get the praise it deserves. I watched some BTS footage of LOTR and he was so crazy committed. At one point he impaled his foot in a riverbed and urged them to keep rolling.
