When we are watching the women’s England team, it’s Go Lionesses! But we don’t say, Go Lions! when the men are playing, why?

Lionesses is an identity for England women while the men’s team are already identifiable as just England

Possibly? I don’t know, I’ve never heard a commentator refer to the men’s team as the Lions, but they refer to the Lionesses quite easily, I’m just positing why is all?

Because the women's team are nicknamed the Lionesses and the men's team aren't nicknamed the Lions. It's that simple.

You might see someone tweet #ThreeLions but physically shouting Go Lions sounds very American to me, whereas 'come on England' seems more natural. I'd assume it's the same for the Lionesses.

Oh yeah I get that, the men’s team as far as commentators go are never referred to as ‘Lions’ where it’s just Lionesses when it comes to the women’s team
