1. Because they are tired from all the strain of daily life 2. Because they haven't slept in ages and spend their energy on their kids 3. Because they struggle with their mental health 4. Because they feel more comfortable that way 5. Because they aren't obsessing over what piece of fabric somebody has on their body Or a million other reasons. Either way, it would serve you well not to judge people, especially if you do not know their circumstances. I personally don't go out in pajamas, but I have plenty of times gone with unbrushed hair or old clothes - simply because that was the only way I was able to drag myself out the house for the first time in weeks to go and buy some food. In my case it's depression, other people will have different reasons and none are any of your business.

Presumably as they’re dressed like that at home then see no need to change. They jump into their cap, run down to the shops and come back. I’m not saying it’s right but I kinda get it. It’s all about their values and if they care how they’re perceived. I dated a woman who would never leave the house unless she was properly dressed with her hair and make up done. It wasn’t necessary an ego thing; she simply had a rule if she’s going outside whether that be the store, doctors or cinema, she will be presentable. There was once a time when almost all men in this country wore hats, trousers and shirts. Things change (for better or worse).

I’m a man but this is how I feel. Even when I was young I recall disliking how other kids dressed. Basically what I would describe as ‘slobbish.’ Now I’m not asking for you to look Dickensian, but I a am a bit like your ex, I guess. I won’t go outside unless I have jeans or nice trousers on, proper shoes or boots, and a shirt, jumper, or jacket that meets my definition of ‘presentable.’ I won’t even open my door for an Amazon package or take-away in joggers and a jumper, I just won’t. I’ll at the very least put jeans on. In my mind, it’s just part of the social contract we all subconsciously take part in. I believe that my clothing reflects my respect for you. I’m sure critics of my stance would say ‘well what’s the line?’ and I don’t know. No doubt Jacob Rees-Mogg would take issue with _my_ dress. I just expect more than the bare minimum, I guess. It seems more prevalent now, too. I wouldn’t say women, but in my experience people in general just dress more slobbish now.

I told u/JennyW93 we still might be! As I said, to me it’s a sign of a lack of respect. I’d not come to your house without showering, and in grubby clothes. Why? Because I respect you. I would not present myself to you in a way that screams ‘you do not warrant a shower and clean clothes.’ I’m sure most ‘sane’ people apply that logic to friends, interviews, their job, etc. I just also apply it to everyone and everything else. Every person is worth my respect, and as I said, I view my presentation as an extension of that.

I don’t wait for him or her to ring before I change. If I’m expecting a package or delivery, I put on proper clothes well in advance. Also, I am almost never in ‘slobbish’ clothing, even at home. I’m always in jeans and shirts or jumpers. The times I have to change are exceedingly rare.

I’m sure many chronically ill/disabled people would love to make an effort every time we leave the house but unfortunately for us it’s a choice between having the energy to put makeup on, do our hair and put on a pair of jeans (not something that’s easy to slip into, especially with certain disabilities) but stay in, or not spend all our energy getting ready and go out to run our errands. Should I just not meet up with my friends because I feel awful and can’t bear anything that’s not soft touching my skin. How is that disrespectful to them? On the contrary, it shows how much I want to see them. The fact that you think it’d be a reflection on you if someone came to your house in joggers with messy hair is just insane to me. I can assure you it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them and their wishes. Also, delivery people really don’t give a shit what you’re wearing, unless you answer the door naked or partially dressed it doesn’t even register, they’re too busy to give a fuck about what people wear in their own homes.

My girlfriend does it because her pyjama bottoms are comfy, she thinks they look cute, and if she already has them on and she’s just going to Tesco then she might as well save herself the effort of getting changed into her jeans - because, seriously, how do you muster up the energy to give a shit what someone else is wearing in fucking Tesco? This same girl is currently at university five days a week, goes home and works on her dissertation all night and revises for her upcoming exams, gets graduate job application stages done, and works 8 hour shifts on her weekends. She’s certainly not ‘lazy’ or a ‘bum’ like some people in this post have suggested people who wear pyjamas in public are. Would I do it? No. I don’t put pyjamas on until right before bed anyway (while the gf puts them on as soon as she gets in). But I don’t care about people who nip out in them 💀

I don't do that and never understood why would you want to wear what's been outside in grime to bed? That's what regular clothes are for. There's only for me an exception to the rule if you're sick and desperately need some kind of medication I can understand a in and out with PJs on or if coming home from a hospital situation I've been there! Wore my PJs in hospital during an ER visit husband stayed with me the whole 4-5 hours to make sure I heard everything properly *hearing impaired* it was a urgent 1am ambulance ride and we had no one to call to grab some clothes for me upon discharge it was 5am and I was still in my PJs at the time I couldn't even walk properly couldn't even put socks on from pain. So I sat in the car in my PJs and if anyone saw me walking to or from the car in PJs I apologized as I always make sure to change into day clothes.

To give you the complicated answer: This is generally the reserve of working class/unemployed people. A lot of whom suffer with depression and general feelings of hopelessness. pyjamas are comfortable. if you’re already wearing them, the convenience shop is right near your house, and you’ll only be picking up a few items, lots of people don’t feel the need to change out of them. maybe it’s not a good look but for someone who plans to spend no more than 10 minutes outside their house it’s pretty convenient

So many judgy people here make all sorts of assumptions about how their house must look or how little they must think of themselves, or how they have no manners, or how it's about "values" etc. Suggesting we all need to be worried about our "public image" popping out for essentials :D They all need to get a fucking grip. Gosh, so much judgement about people wearing things that are essentially just comfy clothes. As long as people’s genitals aren’t hanging loose and visible what does it matter? Anyway, to answer the question, I imagine it’s a heck of a lot easier to just pop out for something you’re in need of without doing an entire self-care routine beforehand.
