Forklift tablet / computer system solutions

Hello All, I am currently investigating what type of cost effective solutions (Computer system) people are using for forklifts in warehouses. Currently, we are using rugged tablets with extended range USB Zebra scanners to scan pallets 10ft away into our system that is entered via an RDP session on the Windows tablet. I am looking for a replacement for one that is failing and to implement at another location. The $3000 (Canadian) price for the rugged tablet is a hard pill to swallow for our management. I was asked to find something closer to $1500 (if possible) but that seems to be a pretty tall order these days lol. The words rugged & Windows usually translates to $$$ Needs to be Windows based for the RDP session. Thoughts / Suggestions ? Thank you!

There are also apps for linux based systems (eg. Remmina) and android that support the remote desktop protocol to connect to rdp servers ( eg. windows). If it isn't some custom rdp version but the windows default rdp in most cases that shouldn't be an issue.

Yes, all our units are Android and we use RDP on all of them right now. (although we are in the process of moving away from RDP to a web front end) You do have to get picky on the version of RDP client though, as sometimes their updates tend to break the automatic carriage return after scanning a barcode.

Refurb Dell latitude 7220 ex should work. The fans suck but other than that bulletproof.

Yeah, VMU's are expensive. We use Honeywell Thor VM1A's on our forklifts which are around 3k each. Our pallet jack drivers use handhelds which are Honeywell CK65 units. These are also around 3k each. I would suggest staying far away from Zebra units. One thing you will find with mobile units in warehouses is that they are beaten to death and you want a company that you can trust to honor your warranty, repair these, and get them back to you within your contract window. I moved completely away from anything Zebra because their warranty / repair support was taking 6-8 months to turn around units for me when I had 3-day repair contracts. Honeywell has been much better to work with.
