I had a 2010 Santa Fe and the transmission was a problem from day 1. Was "reprogrammed" multiple times and finally replaced at 30,000 miles. That was only one of 25+ other problems. Too bad because it really was a great package...if it ever worked. Never again, Hyundai, never again.

Their transmissions always seem to suck. I wish they contact someone like Mazda or Toyota for transmission control (obviously won’t because competitors).
View on Reddit #20649312

Toyota is only good for transmission durability. Software tuning and gearing-wise, they absolutely suck.

If my car would have been available with it i would have bought it instantly but sadly i only get the 7 speed DSG from VW wich isnt that good espacially for tuning wich is why i stuck with the manual

Well they beat Hyundai in their durability. Toyota doesn’t care to be fun, they care to do their job as almost all of their drivers do not care how it drives as long as it doesn’t hesitate or stall.
View on Reddit #20649867

chiriwangu@reddit

They have the best off-roading SUVs, Supra, GR86, GR Corolla, and GR Yaris. If you include Lexus, they have the IS500, RC F, LC 500, and even more top off-roading SUVs. What more do you want them to do? They have more fun cars than most manufacturers.

I can attest to this. My dad has a 4Runner that I drive occasionally, and it refuses to kick down in any circumstance other than wide open throttle. It’s going to be as durable as a bank vault, but it’s about as fun to drive as one, too.
View on Reddit #20650627

theholylancer@reddit

its been like this since early 2000s, the reason why my dad went with a 2004 accord over a camry was there was a noticeable artificial? lag between when you stepped down and when you get actual power in the engines not sure why but they put that lag in, so if you were to play with the throttle it gave a smoother driving experience, but if you want a responsive thottle.... and when i personally drove a new one of these due to a rental for work, it was the same thing, except now there is a sport mode that actually tightens up throttle response. and i suspect part of the reason why honda lost a lot more ground when toyota can be more or less just as sporty in their normal trims with these sport modes
View on Reddit #20669003

huhwhat90@reddit

My 2005 v6 Camry has one of the dopiest transmissions I've ever driven. At first I thought something was wrong with it, but that's just how it is. It really doesn't like going down hills.
View on Reddit #20669004

theholylancer@reddit

i don't know why they made what they made, i don't know if its a programmed throttle lag, or if it is the transmission, or if it is something else but given that the new 2015 or w/e at the time camry had the same default behavior that changed when I hit the sport mode, I assume it is something that they intentionally programmed in. be it to preserve reliability of the engine or transmission so you don't hammer it hard, or because it is like my dad thought that if you are a driver with a bad habit of playing with the throttle or an unsteady foot, then this makes for a smooth ride, it was a weird annoying quirk of the thing.

You misunderstood the above comment. It translates into "it doesn't matter if it is or isn't faster if it hasn't been proven to be able to do so reliably," not "it hasn't been tested to be faster." It's easy to design to design a high performance part that provides high performance for a low amount of time. Reliability is a whole different beast.

That's fair enough, but I'd still give Toyota the benefit of the doubt here.

_The_Real_Sans_@reddit

I haven't spent enough time with their newer traditions autos to know anything about them, but the eCVT they use for their hybrids is probably the best 'boring car' transmission out there. In stuff like the new Sienna it completely blends into the background.

View on Reddit #20698171

I had a coworker that got that 2012 redesign immediately after release, lots of bragging about all the features for the price. Then it spent 6 months in and out of the shop because they couldn’t track down a suspension rattle and basically had to get engineers involved. He kept bragging about how they brought in all these important Hyundai people to help diagnose and they were basically replacing all of these components with “new and better” ones. All I could think of is how the car was brand new and shouldn’t be sniffing the shop for years. Granted it was an all new design and there will be bugs but that was insane.

the worst thing about putting computers in cars is that carmakers have more or less universally decided that they can use them to avoid fixing obvious mechanical defects by throwing supposed software revisions at them - not to actually fix anything, but to kick the can down the road without spending a penny on parts and, functionally, nothing on labor either.

View on Reddit #20716476

the reason they have that warranty is because the theta engines were so unreliable and they have so many other various issues they were basically forced to. their transmissions are like the one thing that isnt consistently shit on every model but i still hear about them going out before 150k, there was a guy who put 800k on an elantra with like 8 engines and i believe 6 transmissions.
View on Reddit #20697782

Plantherblorg@reddit

The warranty came out of the recession - except when Ford pulled theirs back to normal Hyundai and Kia kept theirs where it was. The Theta issue was later.
View on Reddit #20698290

Mr__Snek@reddit

the warranty they started during the recession was only for certified pre owned afaik. the longer powertrain warranty they started offering on factory cars came more recently, and it was literally part of the settlement for the original theta lawsuit. it was extended to any older cars with the theta ii motors, and specifically the bearings in the rotating assembly now come with lifetime warranties covering the entire engine (or maybe just the short block, been a minute since ive read the specifics) because of the issues they have.

With the 2.5l engines they had an issue where the piston rings don’t seal right and oil leaks into the combustion chamber. Might’ve fixed it, but who knows.

It's kind of hard to keep track of all the major mechanical failure modes that Kia/Hyundai engines have.
View on Reddit #20702648

billythygoat@reddit

Usually has to do with engine oil leaking somewhere. Some have way too much carbon buildup at 30k miles that’s supposed to look like 300k miles of driving. But keep in mind, this is for like less than 1% of all Hyundais and Kia’s with these engines have a problem till the 100k+ mileage. Its the vocal minority as my uncle had those 2012/13 Kia optima’s with no issues at all, until it got hit lol
View on Reddit #20704290

Apexnanoman@reddit

Well I know the 2.4s they had to recall in the millions for major mechanical failures. I drive a lot for my job and for a few years my co-workers were buying. She is in Hyundai's left and right because they were dirt cheap. And almost every one of them had premature engine failures and now the parking lot at my job. So I only has a handful. Ymmv.

Not surprising at all. Hyundai and Kia have been making some hot garbage the last few years. Absolutely does suck but it could happen with any vehicle. Even if a fraction of a percent fail that fast because something was out of spec or assembled incorrectly it fails on someone. The real key is to make sure that they find the real root cause of the failure so that you don’t end up with multiple failures.

Car and Driver also killed the DCT and had a failed coil and thermal management system (electric valves that replaced the thermostat) on a 22 Sorento long-termer with the same 2.5T and DCT. DCTs have no business in normal cars. You’d think others would have learned from Ford but I guess H/K thought they knew better.

My coworker bought a brand new Elantra N line back in '21 and took me with him for his first pull. He blew the DCT on the 2nd pull. After two months in the shop, he had it back for a week and a coil bit the dust. After another week at the dealership, he got it back and someone smashed in the window and stole nothing his first night back to work in it. So... Hyundai life? I hear stories like these about Hyundais more than any other car by a long shot.

View on Reddit #20678855

Bored_lurker87@reddit

Lots of single data points pointing directly at shotty build quality. My mother's Sonata almost burned her house down too when the turbo leaked oil on the exhaust and it caught fire at 83k mi. Had another coworker's Elantra ate crankshaft at 20k miles. These are real life experiences and it seems to be the only people I know that actually don't have their Hyundais in the shop at least one season a year are the 1.6 n/a cars with the manual. Nobody else I know is taking in their cars this many times for this much warranty work with this much downtime. Not saying you can't find a good car with a Hyundai badge- it's just harder. And for God's sake if you do find a good one change the fucking oil. Just sharing my experience and experiences of others important to me. Keep shilling and living in denial if you like, but Hyundai has a quality problem.

Definitely not a trope, especially with newer Hyundai/Kias. https://www.carscoops.com/2022/10/hyundai-kia-initiate-recalls-on-122000-vehicles-for-8-speed-dct-transmission-failure/ We also had a 2022 Kia Sorento SX with the 8 speed transmission, 33k miles and the transmission needed to be replaced. Luckily our local Kia dealership is pretty good and it was fixed in 2 weeks, but after that we traded it in for a '24 Honda Pilot.
View on Reddit #20661981

Showing me an article about a failure doesn’t make that point. You have to [compare it to other cars](https://www.kbb.com/car-news/consumer-reports-these-are-the-least-reliable-cars/) And [this one](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/more-money-most-least-reliable-201135669.html) has Hyundai at 13 out of 24. Just talking about Hyundai problems ignores that all car companies have issue like this, some much worse than Hyundai. Cars are far more complicated now than they were 20 years ago so these kinds of issues from the factory are going to come with the territory.

View on Reddit #20666959

Beneficial_Syrup_362@reddit

Do you actually know what was wrong with the engines? Is it outside the bounds of reality for you to imagine that they had an unlucky oversight, and that this design flaw was not indicative of a systemic engineering culture problem? What’s more? They replaced them all for free. Looking back, my mother is quite happy it happened to her because now she has an 8 year old car with an engine with 7,000 miles on it. Didn’t cost her a dime. Hyundai/kia does not attain the track record they have, with regard to gaining market share, if their products are shit. >Dumb hill to die on. I will always die on the hill of lazy car tropes.
View on Reddit #20667207

Conch-Republic@reddit

Yes, nearly their entire line suffers from lubrication problems that cause them to shred main bearings. There's even a big class action lawsuit over it. https://www.kiaengineclasssettlement.com/ It was traced back to a shitty electric oil pump that is part of the start stop system. Stop being dumb.
View on Reddit #20667498

Beneficial_Syrup_362@reddit

> Yes, nearly their entire line suffers from lubrication problems That doesn’t answer the question. Do you know *why* they suffer from lubrication issues? Keeping it relevant to the discussion, was it a systemic culture of poor engineering, or was it an unlucky oversight? It’s the latter. > On some models, it was traced back to a shitty electric oil pump that is part of the start stop system. And has anyone concluded “Hyundai should have known better” or does shit just happen sometimes and sometimes that shit can cause huge down-stream problems? > I'm sorry too bought a Kia, but stop being dumb. I bought an EV so I’m totally insulated from this problem. And Kia is industry-leading in the EV sector.
View on Reddit #20673097

Conch-Republic@reddit

No, you fucking moron, it's a design oversight. An 'engine whoopsie' doesn't lead to an issue that affects nearly every single engine they make. Like god damn what a dumb argument this is. Did you also defend Ford over the DPS6 disaster? Even the recall page on their website mentions bearing failure as a cause. https://www.hyundaiengineinfo.com/engine-recalls/ Listen, I understand that you love your Kia, but you're just going to have to come to terms that it's a piece of shit.
View on Reddit #20673734

Beneficial_Syrup_362@reddit

>No, you fucking moron, it's a design oversight. An 'engine whoopsie' What’s the difference? An oversight, by definition, is a whoopsie. No car company is impervious to oversights. Where is your evidence that they knew they were risking this engine problem but forged ahead anyway? >Like god damn what a dumb argument this is. Did you also defend Ford over the DPS6 disaster? I would not say “ford suck. Avoid all fords” specifically because of that. >Even the recall page on their website mentions bearing failure as a cause. What is it you think this discussion is about? Because it seems like you think the debate is “did Hyundai have a problem”. That is NOT the discussion. >Listen, I understand that you love your Kia, but you're just going to have to come to terms that it's a piece of shit. And you base that off of what? It doesn’t even have an engine or a transmission to fail. You asked why I’m “dying on this hill.” Youre demonstrating exactly why. Brain dead tropes that get repeated for internet clout.

This sub whena BMW has issues "omg so unreliable never buy it" Also this sub when an Asian car has issues "oopsie guess can happen to any car"
View on Reddit #20667605

Eguot@reddit

I've noticed a lot of people are like this no matter where you go, be it certain subreddits, facebook groups, tracks, etc. European = Expensive and unreliable Japanese/Asia = Extremely Reliable American = TRUCKS AND MUSCLE CARS ONLY But truth is the matter is, every manufacturer has issues. Every car will have some sort of issue, even if a car was produced that never had issues doesn't mean that something could happen at the factory where a single worker may have had an off day and missed something so small, that no one picked it up until the consumer got the product. Part prices vary wildly as well, if you get a luxury car no matter the manufacturer, the prices are going to be high. If you get a car that is mass produced throughout the world, the prices are going to be quite inexpensive. If you buy a brand new model year car, no matter that brand, parts are going to be unavailable and if available, that part is probably going to be expensive. In regards to aftermarket parts, if consumers don't have a demand for a part, a company isn't going to waste anything on producing that part to just never sell. So yes, maintenance on a 30 year old BMW may be expensive, because that part you need is not produced by anyone anymore, and only BMW has that part, or the aftermarket part doesn't even work. Yes your labor rates are going to be higher because Joe the mechanic doesn't want to work on something he isn't familiar with so you go to the German Specialty Shop, that knows they can charge you a higher rate because no one else wants to work on your vehicle. Every new year model release, such as the OP, are littered with issues, hence why a lot of people say to skip the first year model cars. Again those issues may not even show until years down the road. The best way to go about owning a vehicle is maintaining it, just like anything else in your life when something breaks or isn't working properly, get it fixed. People seem to fail to realize that all cars, are in the end, cars. They all have doors, windows, engines, wheels, tires, bushings, wires, etc. If you can work on one, you can work on them all, it just may be a different process on how you work on it or diagnose the issue.
View on Reddit #20688447

crazyjatt@reddit

Every manufacturer may or may not have issues, but some have more issues than others. It isn't subjective. We literally have data supporting that. That's where the perception comes from.
View on Reddit #20697055

Eguot@reddit

Correct, but the issue I am saying is it is a lot more than just a manufacturer, model, country etc. Just because it is a Honda, doesn't mean it will be cheap to repair. Just because it is a BMW doesn't mean it'll be unreliable.

The comment was under an article about yet another recall for one of their engines. I can't help but feel there may be some truth to that. I know depending on the area people live in that Hyundai/Kia dealerships are inundated with warranty service customers. There was one person that said all 4 dealerships in her local area were booked with warranty services for the next 6 months. Yikes.

I actually really like the Ioniq 5, but I don't think I would ever buy one unless it was a gently used one around $20k because they really skimp out on the audio on it. A base Ioniq 5 has a 4 speaker audio system (which btw they hide that fact from you because if you look on the spec sheet it doesn't say how many speakers come with it). So you have to pay for the Limited version that costs $53k+ just to get the Bose system which has an 8-speaker setup. I just find it ridiculous that a $40k car would only have a 4-speaker setup and you are stuck with that setup unless you spend $53k+ for it. I enjoy listening to music on my drive so audio systems are important for me.
View on Reddit #20651696

You could upgrade the front speaker setup with a 2way component set(Focal or similar) and amp that will destroy the factory Bose system in terms of sound quality for under 2k.

I was just thinking about this today. I had a tundra that I had to take back to the dealer at least six times for various issues before it became "bullet proof." That required a few aftermarket "best practices" and independent dealer issues I had to get past. Now I have a Silverado and no issues. I expect they will start happening once I get out at a certain mileage but honestly it is a relief not to have to deal with problems and a service department on a newer vehicle.

Its not even a new powertrain, so there is no excuse like teething problems of the first batch or anything. And one thing that people don't realize about Hyundai's seemingly amazing 10 year warranty? The dealers kind of suck. They often take ages to diagnose and repair issues, and courtesy loaners are not common. That can get expensive really fast when you're paying a loaner week after week out of pocket. My best ever dealership experience was Audi followed closely by Mercedes (they really do pamper you and are hyper professional, and will even upgrade you to a high end loaner if you just ask nicely and suggest you are considering upgrading).
