VMWare by Broadcom: call for speculation

Hoping for some advice or at least informed guesses from real sysadmins. Please be gentle. :) I use the free version of WMWare Workstation Player. A lot. It is easy to use and running a browser or a word processor in a seperate Win10 VM is super easy to back up, plus I get to mess around with virtual copies of Windows 3.11, Slackware, FreeDOS, etc. When I see things like this: [https://news.vmware.com/company/vmware-by-broadcom-business-simplification](https://news.vmware.com/company/vmware-by-broadcom-business-simplification) It does not bode well. It makes me think that maybe I should look for an open source alternative before Broadcom decides to fsck me over or fstab me in the heart. Does an easy to set up FOSS alternative exist? Which one should I try first? Realistically, are we free users doomed? Is any FOSS alternative as easy to set up and use? I don't mind completely setting up new VMs, so being able to run my existing VWare Workstation Player VMs isn't important to me. Has Broadcom given us any hint about the future of player? Speculation welcome!
