Cash (or other currency)

I keep the equivalent of a few thousand US in the local currency at home. I've also got a couple hundred in the currencies of some nearby countries. Last year, when the EU placed sanctions on Russia, my (Russian owned) local bank was suddenly closed. It ended up getting taken over by the national bank and liquidated. For a few weeks, all of the money that was in the account was totally inaccessible. For me, it was an inconvenience. I was able to get my salary redirected to another account I already had, and I was able to use the cash in my safe at home for day-to-day expenses. If I didn't have the cash on hand, it would have been a much bigger inconvenience. Also, a lot of small businesses around me like to deal in cash to avoid paying taxes. Our car mechanic works entirely in cash. We paid the guys who built a veranda for our house in cash. Fresh fruits and eggs get paid for only in cash. You get the idea. Having a stockpile on hand means I can visit the ATM when it's convenient, not every time I need to pay for something big.
