Topics like Naomi Wildman needing to know what is happening to her mother, or how to accept someone different from you, or even questions about AI. Star Trek teachs the kindest, most logical way to deal with interpersonal relationships.

My entire moral compass growing up was informed by Star Trek. I grew up on reruns of the original series and was there at the beginning of TNG! To this day I am an avid fan, I go to conventions, and I collect memorabilia! I even have my favorite Star Trek quote tattooed on me. "The names of the many outweigh needs of the few... Or the one" which is adequate for someone who works in social services. Nerd out my friend!

GenX geeks unite! 🖖🤓 As a kid, Doctor Who, Star Trek and Twilight Zone were it, the only sci-fi on tv. There is so much more now, it’s great! But I’m nostalgic for having fellow geek friends irl, to gather round for the latest TNG episode. We sometimes even discussed the moral issues and how it applies to the real world.

Nurse Christine Chapel in TOS, Deanna Troi, Beverley Crusher crushing it. Christine Chapel might have been the first woman who was an SME that I saw on TV - not saying she was the first woman portrayed as an expert in something, just the first in the limited scope of shows we had on our 4 TV stations. Deanna Troi and that episode where she studies for the test to be a bridge officer - that's an episode I think about all the time. There have been times during my career where I thought about her pursuing professional growth that was important to her and I decided to follow her example. Beverley Crusher who balanced parenthood and career and who often raised her voice over what she thought was right.

SNG has been a huge influence on my, my hubby’s and our two sons’ (they are grown men now!) lives. For me, it has given me a hopeful outlook that one day a lot of problems in society will be solved, and humans will learn to work for the greater good. At times it seems like a delusional viewpoint given the state of the labour market and poverty/homelessness. But things like the EU, or space station, shows we can work together sometimes! So I will hold fast to that dream, and continue to enjoy SNG and other Star Trek franchises. And just enjoy that they show/showed people/species who are different and situations that are new or marginalized like the first interracial kiss on tv!!
