This is the Happy Gilmore sequel I dream of. Carrey as the villainous cocky new golf pro supported by a bitter Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen returns as Happy's girlfriend, Ben Stiller running first aid in the clubhouse, and with Carl Weathers passing, Michael B. Jordan as his son for Happy to mentor into the pros. Let Jim Carrey be Jim Carrey as a jackass with a golf club and it's destined to be a winner.
Between SNL, voicing Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz on The Simpsons, NewsRadio, and some funny supporting parts in movies, I’d say he’s definitely close to the top for that decade.
His Bill Clinton was amazing. Going for a jog with secret service into fast food joints to talk to the people just to garble up all their fries, burgers, and shakes. So good. He's very very missed.
All good. I loved the space episode. Andy Dick gives up his sleep pod for his sex slave robot, even though she doesn't need it. Then Phil Hartman refused his due to his conspiracy theory laden mind, and still wouldn't let Andy have it.
Or, and hear me out, any answer to this is going to be viewed subjectively through the lens of the person responding, and a smug counter full of ellipses isn't going to magically make anyone right or wrong.
That video was filmed 5 miles from my childhood home... And then one of our local DJs named JoJo got drunk one night, locked himself in the studio and played Amish Paradise on loop for hours straight until Police came and arrested him. The guy carved his name into the bar at "Your Place" restaurant.
Follow for more useless trivia... jk...
I taught a history of rock class at a community college and my favorite piece of trivia was asking the class who the top three selling solo artists were in the 1980s.
It’s 1) Michael Jackson 2) Madonna 3) Weird Al. And it’s now even close with the rest
I would say top 3s in every category with the first being king -
Standup - George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Dave Attel
Sitcom - Phil Hartman, Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Bar
Movies - Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy
Comedy Albums Music - Weird Al (Undisputed king) South Park (they made a few)
Comedy Albums Skits and Bits - Adam Sandler, Jeff Foxworthy (not a fan but he was popular) and I would say The Jerky Boys
Animation - Southpark, The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead
He was heavy in the stand up scene in New York and the East Coast in the 90s then took off in the early 2000s on tv then kind of... well .. suffered in the modern era I think.
He was going to go on the list I could easily say Tim Allen was better in Sitcoms than Phil Hartman and add a Skit / Comedy show category for SNL, MadTV, Kids in the Hall etc and say Phil Hartman is there .
I liked his stand up but he frequently used sitcom/ movie bits in his standup. It was really common in the 90s but he had some good comedic efforts movie wise.
Carrey was better to me. Sandler was funny but in a cheesy kind of way. He seemed like he was trying not to get out of line by being funny (maybe he was afraid of setting a bad example for kids) and some of his comedy seemed forced at times. Carrey was pretty wound up and seemed like he was a handful but he was damn hilarious. He played the best Riddler
I think you're right but it's closer than you think. Billy Madison, happy Gilmore and the water boy are good comedies and big daddy had lots of heart. I still think carrey wins but only because dumb and dumber is just so much better than Sandler's comedies. But I think Billy Madison goes toe to toe with Ace Ventura. And if we go beyond the 90s Sandler does have a lot of films that show off his acting range and it's definitely on par with Carrey's if not slightly better. Reign over me was amazing and he doesn't get enough credit for it.
>Ace Venture, Dumb and Dumber, and the Mask all in the same year is hard to top.
And then 2 years later securing the highest payday earned by an actor for a single movie, ever. $20 million to star in The Cable Guy.
Of course, that's small potatoes today, but back then it was a huge deal, just an unprecedented amount. It didn't take long for that shit to spiral out of control.
His Cable Guy salary isn't even in the top 30 of biggest actor paychecks anymore, but the $30 mil he got paid for Yes Man has him at #22.
That’s why comedy is all subjective. I’ve never found any of Carrey’s over the top stuff funny at all. I hated Dumb and Dumber. I did enjoy Cable Guy. That said I have always loved the stupid shit from Sandler. His best movies for me though had some heart like the Wedding Singer and Big Daddy.
>I did enjoy Cable Guy.
That's funny. It's the one Jim Carrey movie that I never cared for much. I just can't watch it without thinking Farley and Spade would have made it a WAY better movie.
I'd say Mitch's peak was after the turn of the century, but he was gold in the late 90's too. I wish I was clever enough to make this statement into his famous one-liner like the other commenters.
Sandler could save his career. I've had this idea for a while. What if he made a movie where he was a tragic underdog that needed to overcome insurmountable odds to save the day and win the girl? Somebody get me his agent.
This is the answer mostly because of how versatile Robin Williams was
Hook, Mrs. Doubtfire, Fern Gully, Aladdin, The Birdcage, Jumanji, Flubber
Live action, animated, adult themed, child friendly...he really was the GOAT
That was the only cool thing he ever wore on that show and they made a point of him thinking it wasn't cool because Seinfeld was for dorks who weren't actually living in the 90s and still thought it was the '80s.
That whole show is as dumb as Friends : it might as well be an '80s show it's so misunderstood the zeitgeist.
The Seinfeld show was definitely king of comedy for tv. Despite Jerry being in it. I thought he was funny, but the other actors were the best part. That and Larry's writing.
*Seinfeld without a*
*Doubt. His show ruled the entire*
*Cultural zeitgeist*

Between these two, Carrey. Carrey can actually act. All Sandler can do is recite whatever lines he’s given while doing his mentally handicapped impression.
Love Letterman. His early years were unmatched by anyone else at the time, but he got content and lazy during most of his time at CBS. The zaniness which initially made him a late night legend was replaced with routine during the last half of his career. Still miss him.
Adam Sandler isn’t even in the same league as Jim Carrey as an actor and comedian. Norm MacDonald is probably the only other one that belongs in the conversation.
They give him $25M+ per movie for making a baby voice then switching to an old man yell. He is pinnacle man-child turned success.
He has some funny hits early on but I'm surprised people never got tired of his shtick passed his second film.
Can't beat just how massive a star Carrey was in the 90s. I'd say Sandler's had a more interesting career overall, though wildly inconsistent. I think some other names deserve a mention, but these two are a worthy choice for head to head. Someone mentioned Phil Hartman, and I'd totally agree if he'd had more lead roles. Mike Myers is another great name in 90s comedy.
If you expanded it to both 80s and 90s, the answer's got to be Bill Murray. He couldn't lose for like 15 years.
No Jay Leno? (kidding)
Between those two, I gotta go with Jim. 1994 alone he had 3 of the Top 25 highest-grossing movies. I could be rewriting history in my mind, but it feels like Adam Sandler wasn't really taken seriously as an actor until *Punch Drunk Love.*
Yeah, but Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, the Longest Yard, Big Daddy…. We’re not talking about the greatest actor here, we’re talking about comedy. Sandler was HUGE in the 90s. And pretty fucking funny back then
Between these two? I have to admit, I have never once found Adam Sandler funny. I know people do, I just never understood it. Carrey did some hilarious stuff for a few years then I didn't care anymore. Maybe Mike Myers? I loved Wayne's World and So I Married and Axe Murderer.
Bill Murray has some absolute treasure in the 90s. Maybe not as prolific as the man talking out of his ass, but still pretty great.
But I don’t think you can argue against Jerry Seinfeld.
