Sandler had 2 good comedies in the 90s. Carrey had a half dozen. It's Carrey.

Mike Myers. Wayne’s world, Austin Powers, Shrek. I didn’t check the dates in these so I may be off.

Shrek is the only one not from the 90s...that was 2001. Technically Goldmember was 02.

This is the Happy Gilmore sequel I dream of. Carrey as the villainous cocky new golf pro supported by a bitter Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen returns as Happy's girlfriend, Ben Stiller running first aid in the clubhouse, and with Carl Weathers passing, Michael B. Jordan as his son for Happy to mentor into the pros. Let Jim Carrey be Jim Carrey as a jackass with a golf club and it's destined to be a winner.

Between SNL, voicing Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz on The Simpsons, NewsRadio, and some funny supporting parts in movies, I’d say he’s definitely close to the top for that decade.

His Bill Clinton was amazing. Going for a jog with secret service into fast food joints to talk to the people just to garble up all their fries, burgers, and shakes. So good. He's very very missed.

I would say top 3s in every category with the first being king - Standup - George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Dave Attel Sitcom - Phil Hartman, Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Bar Movies - Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy Comedy Albums Music - Weird Al (Undisputed king) South Park (they made a few) Comedy Albums Skits and Bits - Adam Sandler, Jeff Foxworthy (not a fan but he was popular) and I would say The Jerky Boys Animation - Southpark, The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead

Carrey was better to me. Sandler was funny but in a cheesy kind of way. He seemed like he was trying not to get out of line by being funny (maybe he was afraid of setting a bad example for kids) and some of his comedy seemed forced at times. Carrey was pretty wound up and seemed like he was a handful but he was damn hilarious. He played the best Riddler

View on Reddit #19875471

Messijoes18@reddit

I think you're right but it's closer than you think. Billy Madison, happy Gilmore and the water boy are good comedies and big daddy had lots of heart. I still think carrey wins but only because dumb and dumber is just so much better than Sandler's comedies. But I think Billy Madison goes toe to toe with Ace Ventura. And if we go beyond the 90s Sandler does have a lot of films that show off his acting range and it's definitely on par with Carrey's if not slightly better. Reign over me was amazing and he doesn't get enough credit for it.

>Ace Venture, Dumb and Dumber, and the Mask all in the same year is hard to top. And then 2 years later securing the highest payday earned by an actor for a single movie, ever. $20 million to star in The Cable Guy. Of course, that's small potatoes today, but back then it was a huge deal, just an unprecedented amount. It didn't take long for that shit to spiral out of control. His Cable Guy salary isn't even in the top 30 of biggest actor paychecks anymore, but the $30 mil he got paid for Yes Man has him at #22.

Can't beat just how massive a star Carrey was in the 90s. I'd say Sandler's had a more interesting career overall, though wildly inconsistent. I think some other names deserve a mention, but these two are a worthy choice for head to head. Someone mentioned Phil Hartman, and I'd totally agree if he'd had more lead roles. Mike Myers is another great name in 90s comedy. If you expanded it to both 80s and 90s, the answer's got to be Bill Murray. He couldn't lose for like 15 years.

For me, it’s definitely Jim Carrey. To this day I still laugh my ass off to Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber.

Between these two? I have to admit, I have never once found Adam Sandler funny. I know people do, I just never understood it. Carrey did some hilarious stuff for a few years then I didn't care anymore. Maybe Mike Myers? I loved Wayne's World and So I Married and Axe Murderer.

Bill Murray has some absolute treasure in the 90s. Maybe not as prolific as the man talking out of his ass, but still pretty great. But I don’t think you can argue against Jerry Seinfeld.

To be fair though, Larry David was half of Seinfeld. It didn't hurt that his supporting cast was insanely talented as well.

This skit aired in April, 2000. And I don’t remember him being popular on SNL until the late 90s.
