Why is British Lamb expensive?

Why is British Lamb so expensive? Everywhere I go i see hundreds of sheep in fields, yet its seem to be one of the most expensive meat. Is there a reason for this, are these sheep somehow different from the imported and cheaper lamb. Or are British farmer profiteering from home grown lamb.
