AI will, 100% with certainty, be able to outperform humans (by orders of magnitude) at almost any task that requires logic, reasoning and critical thinking within the next 15 years. You’d be a fool to bet against that.

And it may also purely be the result of situational understanding and probability computation. Which computers so infinitely better than humans. Even now it’s easy enough to feed all the live aircraft and environmental data into an agi (actually specific rather than general in this case), which has been trained on billions of historical flights and weather patterns, and have it give you highly accurate info. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Elon ventures into this space based on all the automation work he’s doing with cars and rockets.

Automation and AI are very different things. The former is predictable, hard-coded, straight-line. That’s what you want in emergencies, and to a degree, that already exists. You don’t want some creative algorithm that you now have to second-guess and verify.

How many times have you heard people in a GA plane say “the engine died and I didn’t even THINK of the carb heat. I think that people here are 121 people that are imagining that there will be an LLM that “makes up a checklist.” But saying “Siri, show my engine out checklist. Or Siri, read my engine roughness checklist could be very helpful when a pilot may not have time to pull out and read the checklist or may miss a step by memory.

Yup - LLM's in a constrained environment can be made a lot more useful. A basic read-out of the non-normal procedures would be a start. But I would be interested in an "Alfie - call out any anomalies", then "Alfie - suggest potential causes" ... would at least force the pilot to pause and consider options, if there is time, of course.

If voice recognition in a cockpit could be reliable, I wouldn't want something to read out a checklist at it's own pace, I need to go through something at my own pace. I'd prefer something that automatically displays information about what has failed, and what to do, on a screen which I can then action at my own pace. Actually, they've had that since the 80's, it's called ECAM in Airbus and EICAS in Boeing. Not even remotely close to AI and it does the job. No voice recognition needed and it shows you what you've done and what's next, all without the distraction of yet another noise in the cockpit during an already high workload period. In terms of suggesting potential causes. If the computer doesn't know for sure what an issue is, based on sensor input, the last thing you want is for it to start guessing, because clearly it's already outside the scope of its programming. It either knows what's wrong, or it doesn't.

Downvotes will come (not from me) because it's a solution in search of a problem. We don't need an AI to read checklists off, many modern airlines do that already, and for those that don't, that's why there's two pilots. We don't need an AI to say "hey somethings wrong", the airplane already does that. This is another circular runways or detachable cabin with a parachute. It's not solving problems that flight crews are actually facing, it's solving made up problems that outsiders think pilots are facing.

Machine learning would be great for predicting failures before they are critical. For example, by systems monitoring. Like, “there’s a weird vibration so I predict this door plug might blow out. Many emergencies in (mostly single-set, but sometimes with multiple seats) aircraft have historically been made worse by people not taking their time to handle them properly, so an AI that could read the checklist and point out things you might have missed would likely save someone somewhere sometime. One nice thing about an AI would be the ability to detect simple unforced errors such as to announce "I'm receiving conflicting flight control inputs from both positions" (something roughly like this is being worked on in some aircraft). It'd be an interesting project because it could be integrated into something like xPlane fairly easily for testing and market validation.

A warning that means “I'm receiving conflicting flight control inputs from both positions" already exists in most Airbus aircraft and has been around since the 80s. Most transport category aircraft already have systems that warn pilots about threats, and anything AI could warn the pilots about probably already has a warning system in place.

I don’t need to scream at Siri to bring up an engine out emergency checklist and get an electrical malfunction checklist instead. AI would just another layer of expensive bullshit added to something that already works without it.

No. The information you need in an emergency needs to be recalled exactly, not generated from learned with a max-probability approach. There are already hybrid products that use LLMs together with regular TF-IDF search engines to guarantee exact retrieval... but at that point why not just use a regular search feature? It's not that you have to retrieve from a corpus of petabytes and petabytes. The checklists for a specific type are probably 100kb total.
