Received a 1099 today...

From the State of Minnesota for a "surplus" check. Money collected through taxes, sent back to state residents because we're grossly over taxed apparently needs to be taxed again through the federal government as "income". Kicker: I never even received the fucking surplus check. This system is a fucking joke. Rant over.

Add your expenses on the schedule C like lawyer and accounting fees for incurring this 1099 so and this might turn into a loss/write off.

Refunds aren't taxable if you take the standard deduction or didn't get the benefit from deducting it on itemized deductions. They're going to issue a 1099 but it's not an issue if you report it properly on your return.

As far as I'm aware, these aren't state taxable, but ARE fed taxable. Minnesota screwed up and didn't file it by the time the Fed imposed cutoff, so it's seen as fed income. IIRC it's because it's not a true "refund". It was a hand out to people making under a certain amount of money. Like for instance, I made more than the cut off, so I didn't get the "refund".

$17.5B surplus, here's $260, go fuck yourself. My favorite part is never even receiving the money. I know that there are many Minnesotans who also never got a check. They're taxing phantom money.

And don't forget they also raised the budget tremendously after spending the surplus. They jacked up sales tax, DNR taxes and other taxes. This state just continues to get more expensive for taxpayers. People just roll over and take it and ask for more. Same thing with the free breakfast and lunch for all students. There's already been some pretty decent free and reduced lunch programs for kids that can't afford it, but now we need to apparently subsidize everybody having kids even more.

Same from my city. Overpaid on taxes, got a letter from the city saying they were keeping the excess and applying to next year's taxes. Just got a 1099-G stating the money was refunded and needs to be claimed as income.. Have to call city to get this fixed now. It's not fucking income if it was taxed already.
