Why do people not take to the streets over the price of train tickets in this country?

I'm fairly lucky at the moment as I'm still in the age bracket where I can get a railcard, but I'm looking at prices for trains and it's pretty shocking. To get to London for work from where I am, it is a £50 day return on peak times for a journey that takes an hour and nine minutes.
Today I'm going to visit my parents by train and the journey is less than an hour, it's £20 for a day return ticket.
Contrast that with the fact that I've flown to Edinburgh recently for £11.
How is this sustainable? I dread the day where I can no longer get a railcard, I feel like I won't be able to afford to get the train at all.
