Weird Al was my first ever concert and when I got older, I made sure to take my teen sister to a Weird Al concert! He is such a cultural touchstone for me.
I went with my mom in 2000 and my husband and I have gone twice since 2015. Hoping he does another more classic tour to take the kid. When she was truly up for it, it was the more recent indulgent one and she’d have been lost lol
When I was about 10 or 11, my cool grandma took me to see UHF in the theater. I remember us both laughing our asses off pretty much the whole time. Also, we were the *only* people there for that showing, so it was like having our own private movie theater!
I went with my older brother and his friend when I was around 10 and we were the only people in the theater too. We were dying laughing and I still quote the show to this day (no one gets the references of course.).
I almost sent him a suggestion for a papa roach song once.
>Cut my lunch into pieces,
I've reached my last dessert mastication no breathing,
Don't give a F if I cut my carbs completely,
Do you even care if I die from eating?
Would it be wrong would it be right?
If I eat black beans tonight, chances are that I might,
Mastication out of sight, and I'm contemplating supersize
I think he had someone read his messages for him and reject them. Music artists who do parodies usually avoid even reading fan suggestions to avoid being accused of plagiarism.
My husband is from India, I'm American. We're both Xennials, but with very different cultural upbringings, obviously. We are routinely discovering that something from my childhood is totally unknown to him...Recently, one of those things was Weird Al. I mentioned Weird Al randomly in a conversation, and when my husband asked, "Who is that?" I showed him "Amish Paradise." Friends, my husband went on a 3-day Weird Al YouTube binge and is now a huge fan! It was adorable!
Back in the day, I used to cover [one of my faves of his tunes.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p11hFgnBm0U&pp=ygUgT25lIG1vcmUgbWludXRlIGV2aWwgcm9ib3Qga2V2aW4%3D) Weird Al rules.
My first real album ever when I was like 7 (outside of little kids albums) was Weird Al in 3-D. An older kid up the street made me a tape copy. I listened to that tape for like three years straight, I still know all the words to Eat It and The Brady Bunch and I Lost On Jeopardy.
This man is a gift to mankind and music. My parents got me into his music when I was a wee lad with the "In 3D" cassette tape. I think I still have that. Must have come close to wearing it out. Eat In, Fat, I lost on Jeopardy. Great times!
I have positive feelings for him, but negative feelings for people who gatekeep friendships based on whether someone is a fan of a pop culture artist or not.
Ex won Weird Al tickets over the radio. Went to dinner, where she decided to be a see you next Tuesday. Broke up with her after three years of dating. Went to concert anyways and laughed the whole time.
> Why couldn't Coolio see past his own ego?
Especially considering that he borrowed from Stevie Wonder exactly the same way Weird Al borrowed from him.
I've been a member of the 501st Legion for years (if you don't know, it's a global Star Wars costuming collective, mainly based around charity work). Weird Al has used the 501st in nearly every town he has toured to to have them dance/act on stage with him during "The Saga Begins" for years now. He usually requests a Vader and any white armor Stormtroopers he can get.
Because of this, I've been on stage with him four times now, and it has been such an awesome experience. First, if you've never been to a live Al show, you MUST go see one - he and his band put on a SHOW. Costume changes for nearly every song, video packages, the whole thing. It's a massive production. To see it from the backstage angle is even more impressive. His crew is also the nicest folks, people he's worked with for decades in some cases. They treat everyone really well, and Al comes and meets with us after the show, takes photos, etc. each time.
It's the best. I love Al.

Absolutely! He also hires new dancers in each town for the Smells Like Nirvana cheerleaders. We all learn the choreography before the show (it’s really simple for the SW folks).
As a kid, I loved his song parodies.
As an adult, I have a newfound appreciation for his Style Parody pastiches that are made to sound like other bands. Lots of “aha moments”. For example:
Dare to Be Stupid- Devo
Everything You Know Is Wrong- They Might Be Giants
Frank's 2000" TV- R.E.M.
Genius in France- Frank Zappa
Why Does this Always Happen to Me - Ben Folds
Mark Mothersbaugh from DEVO came out and said he "hates" Al because he was able to get a synth sound in "DTBS" he was never able to get. You can tell he respects the hell out of Al for what he's done. His pastiche work is amazing.
Actually, ‘why does this happen to me’ has got Ben folds playing piano on that track. I think they’re kindred spirits because Al was in the video for ‘Rockin’ the suburbs’ which parodied popular videos of the time.
I LOVED “The Night Santa Went Crazy” back in high school, before gun violence reached the point of mass shootings being a normal part of life in America. Now I can’t listen to that one anymore. It makes me sad, less about not being able to listen to it, and more for the reason.
I missed out on Nine Inch Nails back in the '90s and I've been going back and rediscovering songs of my youth by listening to artist backlogs.
"Terrible Lie" came on in the car the other day and I just about went nuts. "I've heard this song!" I kept saying, "I know I've heard this song before . . . and often. But I can't put my finger on it!"
And then I finally did. I wasn't remembering "Terrible Lie."
I was remembering "Germs" from Al's "Running with Scissors" album.
The man is a genius and I love him.
Al is life. He serenaded my mom, singing one more minute with you, on one knee at a show years back. Pre cell phone years. My family still laughs at it.
People are saying that AI will take over and destroy society as we know it. But I think they're secretly taking about Al
If we get and AI Al, it'd just be too confusing
Al should have a hard stance on AI
/End nonsensical rant
Soy un perdedor! I'm a loser, baby!
So why don't you kill me? Everybody!
Soy un perdedor! I'm a loser, baby!
So why don't you kill me? HEY!
I am, I am, I am
I said I wanna get next to you
I said I'm gonna get close to you
You wouldn't want me have to hurt you too
Hurt you too
I know you want what's on my mind
I know you like what's on my mind
I know it eats you up inside
I know, you know, you know, you know
Here I come, I come, I come, I come
Here I come, I come, I come, I come
'Cause all I wanna do is have some fun
I've got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I've got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
Until the sun comes up
Over Santa Monica Boulevard
HELP ME! I broke apart my insides
HELP ME! I got no soul to sell
HELP ME! The only thing that works for me
Help me get away from myself
I wanna (BOING) you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna (BOING) you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to god hey! Hey! Hey!
You bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
Blame, blame, blame
You bang, bang, bang, bang, bang
It's not my thing so let it go!
'Cause that love that you gave that we made
Wasn't able to make it enough
For you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you die, 'til you die
But you're still alive
And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me of the cross
I bare that you gave to me you oughta know
HEY!
Despite all my rage
I am still just a rat in a cage
Despite all my rage
I am still just a rat in a cage
And someone will say what is
Lost can never be saved despite all my rage
I am still just a rat in a cage
I love all of you hurt by the cold
So hard and lonely too
When you don't know yourself
I don't owe you anything!
I don't owe you anything!
I don't owe you anything!
I don't owe you anything!
Black hole sun won't you come
And wash away the rain black hole sun
Won't you come, won't you come
Black hole sun, black hole sun
Won't you come
Black hole sun, black hole sun
Won't you come
Black hole sun, black hole sun
Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything all at once?
I am one of those melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone no doubt about it
Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps all adding up
I think I'm cracking up
And am I just Paranoid am I just stoned?
Or am I just stoned?
I'm not into parody music in general, with the exception of Flight Of The Conchords. It feels like a punchline that gets old after the first time I've heard it. I Love that Wierd Al exists, and I hope he keeps making music. I hope people always enjoy his music, even though I may not be one of them.
I saw that tour (I think it was 2021, maybe 2022). He included I’ll Sue Ya in his set and I was simply delighted, that’s my favorite! But yeah it would have been amazing to hear all of the hits for sure.
What are you talking about. The tour I saw was specifically labeled as primarily singing his originals. I was fine with that for the chance to see him for the first time!
I saw him in concert at Six Flags back in, shoot, the late 90s or early 00s. It was legitimately the most fun concert I’ve ever been to, and probably the only one I would drag my old ass to today given the opportunity!
Fun fact, if you are traveling thru Albuquerque on I-40 and start playing Albuquerque by Weird Al shortly upon entering City limits, the song will last almost all the way until the other side of town. Within a couple miles at least. Don't remember specific mile markers or anything. I was very impressed with timing, almost like it was supposed to be that way.
Also, if you head north on I-25 about 2 miles you’ll pass the world famous….ALBUQUERQUE HOLIDAY INN! Double check with yelp for current towel fluffiness reviews. All hotels are also non smoking so you can’t eat your soup out of the ashtrays anymore…..bummer.
Well just don’t take it seriously and you’ll be fine. It’s a not a documentary, despite how they marketed it. I mean he fights the drug cartels if that tells you anything.
Not only extremely talented and one of the few parody artists that are a household name, but he is wholesome and fun irl too, or so I’ve heard and seen in interviews
I was at Whole Foods at the yogurt cooler. My wife said something I could hear and I yelled back at her “you want something?” And the dude next to me turned around thinking I was talking to him.
Weird al, standing in front of me. I don’t freeze a lot. I don’t do the fanboy thing. Except this time. “Holy fuck weird Al” and I couldn’t move. It took him a second and he realized and smiled. I just gushed for a minute and he and I grabbed our yogurt and left.
Amazing moment.
Weird AL has been through a lot and is still a good and relatively wholesome guy in spite of it. Dude just wants to make people laugh with his quirky songs.
I like my music and comedy separate so no, This guy doesn’t rank very high with me.
The people who fine weird Al funny are the same people that laugh at fart jokes.
The man wrote an entire song in palindromes in a pastiche of Bob Dylan. It’s called Bob, even the name of the song is a palindrome. Every line in the song is a palindrome. I asked him how long it took him to write that song the last time I met him and he replied, “Half an hour” and then he laughed and said, “I don’t know exactly how long”. I could never write this, period, and neither could you. He’s a genius and he’s hilarious. I won’t downvote you just because I disagree because I *never* do that, but you’re *so* *wrong* lol.
I mean, all his stuff is clever, but listen to / watch this. Then go watch Word Crimes. Just go check all his stuff out. I’m assuming you don’t know much Weird Al. Saying Weird Al = fart jokes is like saying The Beatles = a boy band lol

i had this friend in middle school who was absolutely obsessed. went over to his grandparents one night for a family get together, and me, him and a couple other friends just hung out in another room having a weird al dance party while the family all just got drunk. definitely one of my strangest memories. I could never imagine doing this later in my adolescense (or ever, really) but during the time didn't seem weird at all. good times
Weird Al’s band was once staying in the hotel I work at. I told his guitar player that I was bummed I had to work and couldn’t have gone to the concert. He said, “We could have used you. There are never any good looking women at Weird Al concerts.”
If anyone remembers the show At Midnight with Chris Hardwick it was a game show with comedians and they’d have to come up with ridiculous responses to vine videos, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc. one episode had Weird Al and he “won” and did his whole schtick of “This is the greatest moment of my life” and hugging everyone. It was one of the best episodes along with the deputies from the Reno Sheriffs Department(Reno 911).
All I remember is that once while winning on Remote Control on MTV I clearly saw "Weird" (Al's) ability to suck his own balls and wondered how he possibly kept his personal work ethic in place.
I almost sent him a suggestion for a papa roach song once.

I used to have a whole version of the song.
What if I have strong strange, almost weird, feelings for this man.
I would even help him carry his big leather suitcase, and his garment bag, and his tenor saxophone, and his twelve-pound bowling ball, and his lucky, lucky autographed glow-in-the-dark snorkel as he crawled across the desert on his hands and knees for three full days.
there is an episode of gilbert gotfriend’s collosal podcast with weird al as guest and they were talking about his (WA’s) brief saturday morning cartoon show, and gilbert was cast as his imaginary friend. three minutes of amazing throwback comedy.
Has the pleasure of running into him at a Spike and Mike’s Twisted Festival of Animation back in like 02/03. I remember it was cold (for CA anyway) and he was just chillin in this wild vibrant Hawaiian shirt. Real laid back, he talked with/signed stuff for literally everyone who approached him.
One of my friends from high school met him at an event about 10 years ago. She got him to sign her ankle in Sharpie. She immediately went to her tattoo shop where she’d given her artist advance notice and had the autograph tattooed on her. She came back and showed him. He was thrilled as fuck that someone would do that, because normally people only do that for celebrities like Stan Lee. (RIP)
I have his autograph, from the early 90s! He was on one of my mom's flights (she's a flight attendant, currently in her 51st year of flying). It's a timeless treasure!
The source of all my “don’t take entertainment professionals too seriously, folks” ideologies. Having No Weird Al would’ve resulted in me idolizing the likes of several music and other entertainment stars. I forever raise a glass in salute to Weird Al … in a non idolistic way … somehow.
My two teenagers spent the Christmas holiday “corrupting” their very sheltered 9 year old cousin by teaching him all about Weird Al, and it was the most wholesome thing ever.
Dude, I got made fun of a lot for liking Weird Al back in the day. Same thing with Dragon Ball Z. And now they're both all sorts of popular. Wish I could go back to teenage me and be all "This is all good entertainment, it's the haters that suck."
The night his parents died I was at my buddies house, his grandma called and told him that Al had died. He turned to me and relayed the message in a panic. We put on UHF and watched the whole thing teary eyed and listened to his albums all night.
Next morning his grandma woke us up and told us she was wrong, he was alive, then made us waffles.
I never forgave her.
