I do a lot of G1000 intro training: 1) Audio panel (no idea why but like 75% of the struggles I see are people trying to change frequencies, turn up volumes, transmit on the right comm, etc.) 2) How to setup and fly an approach (for the IFR pilots). Also, how to setup and fly an unpublished hold. 3) How to use the autopilot. Then double check this actually stuck. Mismanagement of the autopilot is a HUGE gotcha. The KAP140 in unintuitive but was kludged in there and works. The GFC700 is way better but not foolproof. 4) How to find information quickly so you can get back to flying the airplane. Don't get distracted, make the automation work for you not against you. 5) How to setup the map the way you want (common things like north up/track up, NEXRAD, terrain, declutter, range rings, airspace warnings, traffic, METARs/ADS-B in, etc.). 6) How to use the AUX page effectively (learn how the G1000 calculates the ETE, ETA, fuel remaining, etc.) 7) Engine management, fuel totalizer usage, lean assist (and why it's probably better to just don't use it). 8) How to recover when the automation steers you astray. In IFR this can be deadly, in VFR this can be a dangerous distraction; learning to recover quickly and in a stable manner is a key to safety. 9) Vertical descent planning. That little cyan arc is your best friend. Also, that little purple diamond on the HSI showing your GPS track is also your friend. If you have synthetic vision, then the flight path marker is your best friend. 10) Experience in king. Expect 5 hours until students can fly without completely getting distracted. Expect about 10 hours before they're generally proficient to fly single pilot IFR or in a complex flight. Expect like 20 hours before one can truly master it. I have over 350 hours behind the G1000 and am still learning new things on occasion. The G1000 is a complex system but extremely powerful. It makes single pilot IFR so much easier and safer. The automation can make some previously difficult tasks trivial. Read through the pilot's guide and/or watch some videos on the G1000. Then practice with it. Then go back and re-read/re-watch the study material as it will stick a lot better the 2nd time around.

Thanks for the detailed rundown! I'm a student pilot nearing my PPL checkride in the DA40, and these are all great reminders. For #7, can you explain why you don't recommend using the lean assist functionality of the G1000, and what technique you like to use instead?

The lean assist feature is slow, often hits a false peak, finds the first cylinder to peak instead of the last, and generally doesn't work as well as just watching the temps yourself. I just look for which cylinder will peak last and lean off of that cylinder leaning 50 degrees rich of peak if I want to go fast or slightly lean of peak if I want to save fuel. Not sure if the DA40 recommends anything different for leaning. Watch some Mike Bush videos on leaning if you want to learn more.

Hook up to ground power and push buttons. The G1000 has a bunch of "gotchas" in what you feel should be the correct button to push, vs what actually is. Off the top of my head: >Biggest one is probably the FMS Knob click vs Enter button. >FMS Knob click for cursor. >FMS menus with outer ring vs inner ring of the Knob. Go in with a list of tasks you want to accomplish with the FMS, and screw up the button pushing. Flight plan: >Build a flight plan >modify flight plan >invert flight plan >add/remove wp from flight plan >use range knob to add a custom wp anywhere on the map Radios: >Tune freqs >Volume >Squelch >Intercom panel for switching radios Moving map: >Center click range knob for cursor, pan to scroll >Identify airspace and airports with cursor. Hit enter with them selected for more info WPT page: >Airport info page, you can load frequencies from this page, as well as retrieve information Basically just dick around in the G1000 on the XC legs and learn it.

The best way to learn it is buy the garmin trainer and drill the knob twiddling and use MSFS to play with things like VOR. There's also a pretty decent workbook on Kindle "The G1000 Exercise Book." The Garmin manual itself is unusable.

There's a pilot guide that should be in the plane, I'd start by cracking that open. Max Trescott has also been publishing guides on G1000s for years. Personally I think learning how to use a computer from a book is freaking impossible. I'd advocate plugging the plane in to ground power and playing around with it. Or pony up for one of the simulators that are available from Garmin or others. It's also not a particularly complex system. If you've used Garmin stuff before (such as a 430 or 530) you already know the basic architecture. Chapters and pages, and then the soft-keys across the bottom for context specific functions. The few hard keys around for the obvious stuff like FPL, -D->, etc.
