ULPT: If your Amazon package arrives later than Amazon said it would, you can get a full refund and keep the item

Not sure if actually unethical since it's just something Amazon does willingly
False-Act-9609@reddit
Since the people at the top spent so much effort to avoid taxes etc by making sure a corporation doesn't need to abide by the same rules as people do, I don't see it as theft, it's asset reallocation.
leakyswipe@reddit
can someone answer this for me? so i had a trip for Easter and of course my package was delayed in transit, now expected by April 20th. which is tomorrow. well i already talked to customer service and i can't somehow just pick it up, so i can wait for it or cancel or something like that he said. i really can't postpone this trip to Canada any longer. will it actually show up tomorrow? or am i taking a gamble on it showing up, if i attempt to postpone my departure time until later tomorrow evening. had anyone had it say oh next day then sorry delayed and then got it? or like sorry delayed it'll be there tomorrow and then wasn't? it's a very specific sleeping pad in a good price range and that's a product that i can't just buy anywhere and i am definitely not sleeping on the cold hard ground. i mean i feel consumerist grossness because i expect a package in one day but it's like dude don't tell me and then lie to me and then the customer service guy the first time earlier today said, oh i spoke to the warehouse and it will be there in the next 2-6 hours. like dude wtf
SomeJerkAtWerk@reddit
Half the time I order something it's because they specified a date that suited my needs. If they fuck it up and it's not there when I need it, I'm not paying for shit.
Viveforlife@reddit
And you will have to return it for free as “did not arrive on time”. They don’t just give it to you.
Due_Peak_621@reddit
Actually they do. Ypu get the refund and if under $50 you keep the item as a gift for your inconvenience. I am a business owner If I order something and it is late this has happened everytime. They can track and tell if the package was late or not. It's actually a policy. Does Not happen to me often bit I spend about $3000 a year there so if they say they are going to do something then it simply should happen.
brasscup@reddit
I have been on Amazon Prime since it's inception and I promise you this isn't the case for everyone by any means.
Perhaps your orders constitute enough volume that you get special consideration.
I still maintain my prime membership because I get a half price discount, but over the last two years as prices became less competitive and deliveries increasingly late, I only buy items on Amazon that I can't find elsewhere.
(Supplements for example -- after receiving a couple of counterfeit and or relabeled bottles I buy mostly from Vitacost now, timing my orders with their 20% off sitewide coupons).
Anyhow Amazon never tells me to just keep anything any more no matter how late it arrives. Often I have to call customer service, just to avoid the $6.99 fee for a shipping label even though their policy is indeed not to charge return shipping for late items.
Of course I can always return free to Wholefoods or Kohls but I refuse to drive through several towns to return items that arrived so late I was forced to buy them elsewhere ... I will only go as far as the nearest UPS dropoff point.
Anyhow, I am pretty sure low volume customers do not get to keep stuff. Nor do the folks who make higher than average return requests so if anyone reading this falls into that category be aware that Amazon is keeping count.
As someone who doesn't even watch Prime video I don't think membership is even worth the half price rate I pay.
I only keep it because I regularly need consumables that aren't available anymore outside of Amazon.
Weekly-Chocolate-710@reddit
This is all so true!! I finally received a purchase that took weeks to get here, they said it was lost. They said they would refund me, but only if I return the item. Bunch of BS!
NFLdoWORK@reddit
So I ordered something 3 weeks ago. Amazon is shipping it through USPS and the tracking updates haven't changed in 17 days. Amazon is telling me that if I don't receive my package by tomorrow, I can request a refund. Are you saying that if I accept a refund, and then the package gets delivered, I have to return it? Will I have the option to keep it and pay for it?
Weekly-Chocolate-710@reddit
Yes, pretty much 😕 not sure how it would work if you kept it. I'm assuming they would check tracking and probably charge you.
Hoggbox@reddit
uhhh no more like "it never showed up"
Dear-Ad9468@reddit
Yes they do "just give it to you". That only applies to "prime" items however.
DarianYT@reddit
They are trying to charge for returns. They screwed a lot of people over Honestly, we should watch the FTC do their job and they made people pay for Prime without consent.
BetterIntroduction70@reddit
I hate it they charge for you to ship it back now it's not free to ship back. Even though they have UPS my items. And instead of a ton of boxes for each persons items Amazon is saving money by having UPS ship tons of different peoples returns all together in one box. They want to charge me full shipping cost when they themselves use freight shipping much cheaper. What a scam.
DarianYT@reddit
They need to stop saying free prime shipping when you pay for prime and returns are annoying when they ship it in a bag or envelope.
StabledGenius@reddit
Stealing from Amazon is very ethical actually.
DocSadness@reddit

I've heard stories of people walking out of amaxon warehouses with TVs and such, and security doesnt GAF
rebel_skum69@reddit
When I was applying for Amazon a few years ago at the warehouse they definitely made us empty our pockets and go thru a little security check point before going in and also before leaving. Maybe it changes once you start working there tho idk
Chochahair@reddit
Some centers have security like metal detectors n others likel ine have mothing
Gullible-Welcome-658@reddit
We have to carry clear bags and go through security every time we leave. If our bags aren't clear, they get searched. Hell...our water bottles have to be clear or we have to open them for security. Nobody is walking out with anything...especially tvs😂

There's no security at our warehouse, least none noticeable. Amyone can walk in

Loxatl@reddit
Dude a lot of small businesses sell on Amazon.
whimsigoth222@reddit
For the ones that are sold by a small business and shipped through Amazon, wouldn't Amazon still have the responsibility of eating the cost rather than the small business?
Loxatl@reddit
Lol no. They dont even give us a say. They can refund a customer who hasn't even received the product and they don't have to return it after. It's insane.
Hoggbox@reddit
better sell elsewhere then because people are livid about the misleading delivery times lol
nambiscuiti@reddit
It's not stealing. If the package is late, you have the right to refund all the money
Hot_Huckleberry_9291@reddit
Agreed, its considered a breach of contract if the item isn't delivered on time. And are Amazon is legally required to give them a full refund ,and the buyer has no obligation to return the item if it does show up eventually.
That if Amazon bans someone for following the law, or refuses to give the buyer the refund Amazon is illegally withholding and demanding the item to be returned. Will open up a whole other can of worms if the buyer sues Amazon. Which they have no case to fight it for them breaking the law. Although they do have the right to refuse service , but not in lieu or the reason is because Amazon was forced to obey or broke the law..
Because what if someone purchased an item they needed for their job before a certain date. That because it didnt arrive on time who is going to reimburse the buyer for lost revenue not having it when they needed it. That if they knew it wasn't going to be on time in the date Anazon said it was to arrive. That they would have bought it somewhere else that would .
Or lets say someone needed an item before their once and a lifetime trip to Tahiti.( underwater camera, drone, electric surfboard) that they bought it on Amazon because it said it was to arrive before they left , because they knew they wouldnt have time or the items are not available in Tahiti to buy. Who is going to reimburse them for losing out on a memorable experience that they will never get another chance again.
Not much good a refund help the buyers after. That it only leaves a bad taste in their mouth for not having and giving buyers what they paid when they said they will receive it. its like ordering stuff that arrives after Christmas when it said it was going to be there before it. That its not the same thing or ever going to be the same experience when you show them a picture of the item(s) that are not there
Hoggbox@reddit
exactly what happend to me lol....i needed an item by next day and amazon said "we can deliver this item for sure tomorrow if you order with X amount of time" here we are 3 days later with "oops sorry theres been a delay itll be out for delivery tmrw" ...so when it does arrive ill be keeping the package and letting amazon know it never arrived.
Weekly-Chocolate-710@reddit
I agree with you 100%!!! Today, Dec 22, 2024, I am still waiting for Christmas gifts to arrive when I purchased them dayssss ago. When I originally signed up for Amazon a few years ago, the ads that caught me always said next day or 2-day delivery. Probably 75% of my purchases are always late, which I usually never get notified about til the end of the supposed arrival date. I will definitely be taking action if my items arrive later than Christmas Eve (the day they are supposed to come). Also, I am currently at a dogsitting job way out in the country; In these cases, I only order things that are absolutely needed and I can't go out driving in the snow/ice. I only order next day items, but I am still waiting for one. It would definitely be helpful if I got something the dogs needed (and I paid for) before the job ends.
rrrrob66@reddit
stealing from anyone is unethical, but when you steal from the platform, you are usually stealing from independent sellers. In what world is stealing ethical?
Hoggbox@reddit
should probably start selling on a platform that isnt obviously misleading customers with false delivery dates

Do this too much, and you will be banned from buying on Amazon permanently.
Exercise caution.
No_Okra8899@reddit
What are you talking about? People aren't "doing" anything to make this happen. If you order a package, it doesn't arrive and amazon offers a refund then you seemingly have had no control over the package being delivered late or not at all. How is this something that a customer can control to the point of "do[ing] this too much"??
PM_ME_LEFT_BOOB_ONLY@reddit
People who lie and say their order arrived late and request a refund.
People who lie and say their order never showed up and request a refund.
Amazon has massive amounts of data. They know they have an expected error rate of X%, which they can track against your total orders. They can see whether or not your experiences in terms of orders arriving correctly and whether you ask for refunds or replacements is (roughly) in line with most customer accounts. Obviously, there's differences, but you can plot these on a basic bell curve.
Once a customer's account gets several standard deviations away from what is "normal", it'll get flagged, because it is enormously unlikely that this would happen, and it's almost 100% of the time that the customer is lying and trying to scam Amazon, and they will ban the fuck out of you.
ViaLacteaSystem@reddit
The point is when is PROVED by shopping track that item was late.
Master_Ramaj@reddit
How can people lie about a package arriving late when Amazon has all of the tracking information? Not to mention they are the ones offering a refund
PM_ME_LEFT_BOOB_ONLY@reddit
Packages are marked as arrived all the fucking time without arriving. Do you seriously not believe packages get dropped off at the wrong address?
Master_Ramaj@reddit
You missed the entire point of the comment dumbass. The comment mentioned people lying about packages arriving late..I was questioning how can you lie about a package arriving late when Amazon is the one that initiates the refund talk. I didn't say shit about being delivered the wrong address. Learn how to read
Hoggbox@reddit
weird. ive had an amazon package say delivered and never saw it anywhere....requested a refund got it...4 days later it was magically sitting in my garage....almost like someone just lied to say it was delivered. I kept the package and my refund....about to do the same with an item i paid for next day delivery and here we are 3 days later with the ol "yea we rushed you to buy this item and pay extra and use prime to ensure quick delivery ,,,but ooops we have a delay in the delivery. I needed this item 3 days ago not 2 weeks from now...therefore when it finally does show up....it didnt show up if you know what i mean. Stop misleading customers...period.
fauxpolitik@reddit
This is completely different from the situation the OP described
SnooPuppers4679@reddit
I had to file a police report after finding a box open and items missing on my porch: they treated me like I was scamming them when really I was just mad they were telling me they wouldn't refund me unless I filed a police report (which I did). Ultimately try to order as little as possible from Amazon after this experience.
I originally had a package supposed to arrive today that is going to now be delayed to tuesday: How does one file a complaint without being accused of trying to scam them?

Hoggbox@reddit
get used to that...ive never once had an amazon package come on time to the point i just cancelled prime entirely due to the same shipping times without having prime smh
death1414@reddit
Actually no, the FTC has consumer protections in place such that if an item is late and you get a refund for it then it is as you never ordered it, if you later receive it it is treated as a promotional gift and you are allowed to keep it.
Same for packages meant for another address, if it lands in your mailbox or on your doorstep it is considered free and the company is supposed to refund or replace the item for the original customer.
Sorry for the lengthy necro, but it is important to know they have to allow you to keep the item.
PM_ME_LEFT_BOOB_ONLY@reddit
I didn’t say anything about being allowed to keep the item. I said that Amazon, a private company, would ban you from using their service. Which they can do. Apparently reading comprehension is not your strong suit.
How do I know? I used to work for Amazon. People got perma-banned for this shit all the time.
Hoggbox@reddit
did you tell amazon to try sucking less and deliver on time and stop misleading customers and they wouldnt do it back or nah?
Alert_Ad_9815@reddit
I'm guessing your ignorance is why you USED to work for them. Canada, Australia, USA, UK and most other EU/commonwealth nations share the same set of consumer protection laws and all of them confirm the O.P's statement.
As for Amazon, they also have a strict policy for late/improperly delivered items. They strike the item out of the inventory just like if you had bought it, insurance covers the cost for them. It's really the seller who loses money, and if the seller is amazon themselves, it's covered. Once the refund is issued for a late item, the item has essentially been purchased for all record-keeping purposes.
I say this as an escalation representative at Amazon who has overruled this exact kind of decision made by challenged CS employees who neglected to read the orientation PDFs. It's the hands-down the most irritating part of my job (tied with handling dragonfly for Canadian customers).
Taboo422@reddit
Does this apply with A to Z guatentee?

Not true what so ever from someone who works at Amazon and per The Consumer Contracts Regulations. It gives you the right to request a refund for a late package.

This is what happens. Best case you get 5$. They don’t give you anything free for a “delay” only if it’s a no show then they will refund you but only if it’s like 5 days late or a no show and you are on top of requesting a refund.
JalapeTV@reddit
I’ve done this with multiple PC parts, I’m from USA.
Ok_Alternative7120@reddit
Were the items at the carrier facility when you requested the refund and still received the items? I have a power supply that's been sitting at the carrier facility 20 miles from my house for 3 days. It's now 5 days late. I'm hoping it gets in today, but I'd like to file the refund and hopefully get it for free too lol.

I've got both the refund and the product on two separate occasions. I live in Australia, so maybe it's our consumer protection laws.
Kaze_Number_1@reddit
actually here in the states that applies too because it's Amazon's policy.

Check your Eligibility to Request an A-to-z Guarantee Refund If the following conditions apply, you can request a refund under the A-to-z Guarantee:
You ordered from a Marketplace Seller AND the last possible delivery date of your order is 90 days or less AND at least one of the conditions listed on the next section applies. A-to-z Guarantee Eligibility for Delivery and Item Condition Issues
Three days have passed since the latest estimated delivery date OR the tracking shows a delivery confirmation (whichever is sooner) AND you have contacted the Seller more than 48 hours ago but they did not respond or resolve the issue.
AND you have requested a return more than 48 hours ago and the seller hasn't authorized your return request.
A return address within the United States A prepaid return label A full refund of the item without return Note: For authorized returns with an international return address, allow the seller five days before requesting an A-to-z Guarantee.
OR the return was authorized but a prepaid return label with invalid tracking ID was provided.
Seven days have passed since the return was delivered to the seller. The return with label provided by seller was lost, is undeliverable, or is being returned to you.
Hoggbox@reddit
I literally just did this because i broke my neck to get next day delivery for something I needed that day and amazon decided yet again (not once have i had a package delivered on time) so i just told them it never showed up and got the refund then cancelled prime. I had an order on Amazon that arrived late. I submitted for a refund before. Even though the website told me to return it, i spoke to an Amazon agent and I was told I could keep both the item and the refund. It came about over 2 weeks later passed delivery date. This was ordered before the holidays and the item was about $200 value
Banana8686@reddit
My only option is to “cancel and refund” .. that’s the button I see. You actually had to reach out to an agent?

Yes I had a chat with 2 agents at different times. I had a product that still arrived anyway evem after the delivery date. It helps to speak to an agent so they can log it
Banana8686@reddit
Did you ask for a refund and for the product to still ship?
TIC321@reddit
I originally did ask for a refund. I received the refund.. then the product still came in. I reached out to the agent about it and told me I can keep it.

Ordered 170$ worth of amazon prime items. They got delayed. Contacted customer support at 1am. They offered 5$ for my trouble, I said I prefered if they honored the guarantee. Rep left to go speak with supervisor. Returned 5 minutes lated saying since I'm a good customer they'll issue a full refund and if I receive shipment later that I get to keep it. I got refunded and got package next day.
This was august 2024.
NerdTurtle1@reddit
I've done this a lot at my last apartment. The numbering system was fucked and it was difficult to find the right building. Almost every time Amazon would hand the package off to local USPS to deliver instead. This would cause a delay of about a week. After 3 days, I'd open a support chat and usually get a refund of the item, then still get it a few days later.
Got a 250$ microwave and a ~50$ toaster for "free" this way. The kicker is just waiting until 72 hours have passed since delivery time. This is what all the support reps would ask me to do when I contacted them.
captaincharanxd@reddit

In my own experience I think there might be a price decider as well, I’ve done for honest reasons 3 separate times as there has been postal issues in my area before.
2 out of the 3 items were instant refunds both valued under 50€ and I ended up getting the items a few days later as well. The other was over 100€ they told me to wait another week to see if it arrived and provided 5€ gift card. Obviously the item arrived but was late by over a week.
So make your own conclusions from that but I’m starting to believe that anything under 50€ they just refund without a care and let you keep the item.

So that explains why my GPU costs 50.01$

I order a big item for 250$, it was late, and late, and late, .... amazon pushed the date 4 times, at the end, cannot get refund, never get my item. Only on certain items. I've had many items arrive late and Amazon wanted me to send the item back (will re-charge I'd they don't receive it in 90 days, IIRC). It happened with a JBL speaker I bought.
Dear-Ad9468@reddit
Stop buying shit from 3rd party sellers. If you buy a "prime" item sold by Amazon there is no return fee and half the time they tell you to just keep it AND give you a refund.
Theunknownreap@reddit
Did they see the item arrived and contacted you or you contacted them saying it arrived?
IsoAgent@reddit
I didn't say anything. The original tracking kind of got stuck in limbo, didn't show a delivery, didn't show where it was currently, etc. So the company sent me another one. Then one day I get the message to send back the original (which finally showed up many days later) or get charged for it. So maybe the tracking finally showed it as delivered? I didn't check. I just sent it back.

OddTelephone3004@reddit
I can confirm, that Amazon does penalize contractors for missing quotas and deadlines which would contribute to late deliveries as I work for a trucking company that has a contract to move packages between Amazon warehouses. They have strict timelines for these trips and track closely then at the end of the month the contracted company get heavily penalised for any and all delays. This would certainly cover at least PART of the cost of letting a buyer keep a late item with a refund, and ensure they continue shopping with Amazon. So even if you get to keen an item and get a refund. Amazon still wins
GnarlySocksG@reddit
Ordered something on the 9th, was meant to be here the 14th, that got changed to the 24th and now it got changed again to the 30th. Since it's "shipped" I can't refund despite not wanting it anymore and just wanting my money back.
Happy_Ad_6509@reddit
How much is the maximum amount they are willing to refund? I have an iphone14 on the way which is late, today is the final estimated delviery date, the site says: "We’re very sorry your delivery is late. If you have not received your package by today, you can come back here the next day for a refund." Just have some doubts on this since it was sold by a third party but shipped by amazon.
Chisiokami@reddit

Speed-711@reddit
With mine it said come back tomorrow for a full refund but then then it updates to an option to cancel the order for a refund. So it is basically just a way to cancel a shipped order but if it is delivered they will still charge you. You may be able to sort that out with Customer Service but when I tried I decided I still wanted the item to be shipped to me so they gave me a $10 credit voucher
AuroraBoreale@reddit

3080 box was empty and had no damage or signs of being opened or tampered with
carthoblasty@reddit
How much did it cost at the time?
Age_Correct@reddit
$800ish
carthoblasty@reddit
Ah, I kinda figured stuff like that would be too expensive or they would try to fight it hard. I’ve never done this before, but am kinda considering trying to get a 4070 or 4070 TI or something (or 4080 but that’s probably pushing it lol) soon.
I am going to spend my summer at a University doing research, where the put me up in a dorm. I also did this last summer and noticed that every time I’d try to have them deliver something it would never actually be confirmed as delivered (it’d give a delivery date, then perpetually say running late or something, even though it would be delivered.) Because of this, there were no pictures or anything of delivery either. I think I refunded a small 20 dollar purchase like this but didn’t really touch it otherwise. If this happens again, though, I may try to get something big out of it. Even if it doesn’t I may try it, though it’ll probably be harder
Age_Correct@reddit
4080 def pushing it since its outrageously expensive, 4070 should be able to do they might do a “investigation” they did with me but after 2 days no response I opened up another ticket and they refunded it right away.
carthoblasty@reddit
Should I try to exploit the “never arrived” thing do you think, or should I just say it’s not in the box. Also, do you know if the investigations are in any way legit or is it just the bare minimum? The dorms do have cameras, but I doubt they’d go that far, and otherwise they couldn’t prove that I never received it
Age_Correct@reddit
Never arrived they’ll probably tell you to open a police report first as that’s mail theft you’re claiming on a high end item. Wasn’t in the box is how I did it
carthoblasty@reddit
How old was your Amazon account and how many legit purchases did you have
Age_Correct@reddit
Few years and probably 20-30 or so
carthoblasty@reddit
If an account is a year old and has maybe 40-50 legit purchases with no refunds ever, do you think that’s good for a 4070 TI?
captaincharanxd@reddit
Hey dude have you been successful with the attempt?
Age_Correct@reddit
Can’t guarantee but worth the shot
sfd9fds88fsdsfd8@reddit
You found a 3080 on the side walk?
captaincharanxd@reddit
Wait for real wtf?
backspacer92@reddit
I ordered a stopwatch, delivery was delayed so I refunded it and made a new order. The delayed stopwatch was ultimately delivered and I got two stopwatches in the end, but Amazon just emailed me and told me to send back the original stopwatch or let them charge me for it.

Who was the courier?

DHL.

related question- what’s with the random items that you try returning, for a regular reason- but amazon just decides to let you keep it? i’ve had that happen with a few things
Dark__prince777@reddit
Yeah if the item doesnt say 30 day return but is defective at all tell amazon and since its a non returnable item they let you keep it and refund you
DonRastamanLV@reddit
How do i make request for refund for not delivered packagde? It just gives me run around the app and i cant vonplaon in any way about not delivered packadge?
AuroraBoreale@reddit
Has it arrived? Who was the courier?
pulchritudinouser@reddit
This used to be but is no longer true. They’ll issue the refund if the item hasn’t been delivered yet but once they get confirmation the item was delivered even if super late , they will charge you for it again
ThinCrusts@reddit
Any idea how long does the refund option stay available for me to use? I just noticed it on a package that was delivered to me, but on my orders tab it says its "running late, etc.." with an option to refund by chatting to an agent. Been like a week since it was actually delivered..

7 months later and its still a thing.. Like they push you to accept a refund, meanwhile you can also track it and clearly see its on the way (most of the time). I have a Pole saw in transit right now that amazon is trying to refund me for.
I ended up getting a $800 mini split unit for free about a year ago. It was suppose to arrive on Friday before I finished construction on my garage to turn it into a game room. It didn't show up so I was going to drive to home depot and just buy one. I clicked refund me and a day later the credit hit. The unit shows up on Monday. I was like wtf, I had assumed it never even got shipped. I guess they never scanned the package before it left the warehouse, tracking info never had anything besides "Label Created". I contacted Amazons support to figure out what to do, all they asked me was if I received my refund yet, i told them yes. They said well what else would you like sir? I said what do I do with this unit I no longer need. They told me they would not be paying for return shipping. I said me neither I guess its going in my shed. They told me to have a nice day and we both hung up. My guess, it must be cheaper to just dish out refunds rather than pay several hundred employees 30K a year to oversee and facilitate tracking and receiving refunded items.

Times have changed at amazon!
I had a package due saturday. it shows delivered to agent. there is no agent and i did not receive package, called amazon on sunday said i had to wait until today. I talked with post office yesterday they do not know where package is since it was signed off as delivered falsely they have no further tracking. Called amazon tonight now they say i have to wait until October 8th. I have already canceld my prime account. Called synchrony and verified i can challenge the cost of the items i didnt receive. Tommorw i will have post office contact amazon that package is lost. If they dont refund than (i didnt want a refund jsut waned parts resent but not now) I will challenge the cost of the items, and pay off the rest of the card and cancel! Amazon use to be great, but now we all see what they are! Just wait till the FTC wins their lawsuit prices will rise again.

Nope today i was suppose to get parts for computer they sent only part of it then it said the rest was delivered to an agent. what agent. I called amazon and they said they wont due anything until tuesday as that is the guarantee day. it was guarantied today. not tuesday. "that is our system" this has become a regular thing with stuff not coming when it was suppose to. he said once it leaves our warehouse it isnt our responsibility, I beleive we pay them for 2 day delivery, how is it not their responsibility
Abec13@reddit
I've had items say "it's going to be late, sorry." Then offer a refund. Happened for a $114 order of Noctua PC fans. Was pretty Niiiice
ThinCrusts@reddit
did they ever charge you back? some other comment said that it might get updated to "delivered" even after a long time
Abec13@reddit
I have not experienced that
