Where would you move in Europe with a fully remote UK job&salary?

Hey, I'm a Head of People, I spend my life helping start-ups with employment law, and one of the things everyone has been asking lately is how much freedom companies have with their remote working policies. It sounds like your company policy is to fully support remote working. That's great, but it *may* also be naive and unlawful. The main consideration here is your tax residency status. For British citizens to maintain their tax residency, they must either work 183 days in the UK each year, or own a UK property (and continue to do so). Assuming you do not own a property, It might take a while before the UK govt works out that you're no longer living here, but the moment they do your tax resident status will be revoked. The good news is that this doesn't automatically mean you can't work on a UK contract, the bad news is there are a bunch of complications. - The first thing to worry about is double tax. Now you're probably covered in Europe for stints under 183 days, but the minute you lose that status you will be expected to pay tax in the host country, and more often than not, you will need to pay tax again to the UK gov. This can be a serious hit to your earnings. - Secondly, you'll lose most of your national insurance benefits in the UK, possibly including use of the NHS. (So look into health insurance in the host country) - Finally, once an employer is paying income tax on an employee permanently based in another countries, many companies will consider that company to have opened a company there. There is a very real risk that the host company can demand corporation tax on the overall global revenue of your employer. This can be existential. The most important thing is that you know the company is well informed; and has a plan for the eventual loss of your tax residency. Make sure to ask them about permanent establishment and double tax.
