No, that works fine for losing weight, too. Or gaining it, for that matter. Track your calories. See if the scale has moved in your desired direction in a week. If not, reduce/increase your calories by 200ish. Repeat until you have a reasonable surplus/deficit that causes a small amount of weight change per week. Its really more of "lose the two big bottles of Coke per day and work from there" and less of "eat only grass/goat gonads for every meals".

I mean, there are two aspects to it: 1) The literal, surface-level. CICO is absolute fact. You MUST eat fewer calories than you burn to lose weight. It's fundamentally true. 2) The behavioral. How to get there. HOW do you eat fewer calories than you burn? That's where things get complex, and as far as I am aware there are no good answers. People find stuff that works for them, or they don't. That can be everything from a pure single-minded iron will, to the most convoluted and bizarre bag of mental tricks and lifestyle changes you've ever seen. Much of the failure in this discussion comes down to communication I think. The basic description of CICO can sound like it's implying overweight people simply lack the willpower to eat less. Then people will try refuting that idea, but it sounds like an attack on the logic of CICO itself (obviously there *are* many people who think weight is simply a matter of will, and there *are* many people who think special diets will let a person get around CICO. But I'll see conversations between two people who both seem reasonable, but are making different points and not realizing it)

CICO is just a small and honestly not interesting part of the equation, as you when you lower your calorie intake your body often just goes into power saving mode so CO is lower as well. It becomes harder and harder to get to your goals if what you're eating still creates insulin spikes.

Eat what you want. See if you're still fat. If so, reduce a bit of the portions. Repeat until desired result. That's like, the definition of "moderation" - not eating in excess. If you'd prefer not to track your calories and just eyeball it ("I'll just reduce all my portions by 1/5"), by all means. It might still work, at least in the beginning. You just won't know what exact levers you can tweak if progress begins to slow down.

you see, the thing is, "moderation" is not a good solution when we're talking about addictions, you wouldn't tell an alcoholic to "just drink once a week", or a smoker "just smoke one cigarette every other day". I agree that if they could do that that would be a great way to slowly get over the addiction. You need to understand that obese people are addicted to food, be it using it as coping mechanism for something else, or maybe just because you enjoy it too much. Food addicition is so much harder to overcome cause at the end of the day, you HAVE to eat everyday, you can't just stop eating.

It's much harder to calorie count every single thing you do while hoping you can figure out your losing calories ratio, than it is to just not eat the shit you want and save eating shit you like in moderation for when you're down in the weight. A lot of stuff do not do calories correctly, or do not give them at all. For example, I have a diet right now of around 800-1200kcals a day, with quite a strict diet of what I eat specifically because if I want anything I like in moderation the portions are beyond tiny to still be able to keep up my consistent weight loss. If I was eating what I wanted in moderation now, I'd basically be eating 1 meal a day and still be very fucking hungry.

My calorie intake is that low due to my ADHD. If I eat low calories and keep it roughly KETO, I get a lot less mind fog and my symptoms lessen, however it takes a week or so to get into then the mind fog helps it keep going. Even then, to lose any sort of weight without waiting a year, dieting really needs to be that strict, it's easy enough. Hardest part is saying no to my gf for takeout nights lmfao

I honestly found it really easy to lose weight once I had a clear picture of why I *wasnt* losing. Cico is just basic math and it works. I have habits and routines, and all I had to do was tweak those to eat slightly less and burn slightly more calories. I didn’t change everything at once tho—I changed like one or two things at a time until I cemented it as a habit (a week or so) and then I added in a new change. I lost forty pounds in a year that way (and I’m a woman so a man doing that would lose even more). I purposefully gained back 5, and have been maintaining that for, like, three years now.

I’m trying to gain weight, I’m at 5’10” 175 rn with moderately low body fat, trying to lean bulk. I need to hit the gym though I’m getting to the point where my home equipment isn’t enough. I’m not lucky though, I run a 5k often and go for bike rides a few times a week, I do a lot of calisthenics and lift weights, I’m mostly careful about what I eat and I don’t drink alcohol. People who are obese(speaking from experience, used to be lmao) often have no fucking clue what moderation is. Seriously, its insane how out of touch you can be about how much you eat as a 300lb dude when your frame of reference is that of a 300lb dude. It hit me when I wanted to try calorie counting, but called bs cus i "swore I wasnt eating that much, my bodies just weird". I decided to count how much I ate by weighing the food and using myfitnesspal. Deadass fr no bullshit I ate 5000 calories that day, a day that looking back was one of my better ones. Ever since then I decided to actually count my cals instead of just relying on my broken intuition, and after a year and a half I was in the normal range. AFTER that weight loss was when I built the intuition, cus I finally realized what a "meal" was supposed to look like, and what it FEELS like(most fat people eat till they're full when the average person eats till they're "satisfied", an alien concept unless you know what satisfied is). The experience is the reason why i always call bullshit whenever someone online says theyre body is "weird". Like yeah maybe you DO have a thyroid issue or something but 99% of the time they just have no clue how much/how little they eat. Thats the benefit of shit like keto/counting calories, it reframes what the hell a meal is supposed to be instead of letting fat dudes rely on an instinct that they clearly don't have

Whats insane is that to those people, 12 sodas a day is perfectly normal. It sounds and IS fucking lunacy but at that weight(and obesity in general)there's an actual disorder at play. You simply just don't end up at that extreme without completely fucked eating habits, rock bottom discipline, and a bitch of a coping mechanism. Kinda like how 60lb anorexics live with the reality that their 200cal lifestyles are their average day to day, while being a slave to body image issues and restricting so much to feel control over them. Yeah I agree. There's absolutely no way a mentally healthy person can get to 500lbs. You have to obsessively eat the worst possible food every day for years to get that heavy. High cholesterol is an indicator that you're doing something to inflame your inner vascular walls. It's mostly there to patch holes, and your body manufactures at least 80% of serum cholesterol. Stop making the holes, and the serum cholesterol drops. Lower your cholesterol intake, and you're only slowing your body's ability to patch those holes. The holes are the problem. Not the cholesterol. Unless you're too stupid to stop doing unhealthy shit, then lowering your cholesterol might give an extra year of your miserable life and let's be honest, you probably dont want it if that's you.

Sv trve. The keto diet is just for people who don't understand shit about nutrition, and/or are not disciplined enough to track their calories, and maintain a calorie deficit. It's pretty much impossible to gain weight from eating nothing but meat and fat (as some retarded people in this thread, who think 300 calories of carb heavy junk food is somehow worse than 300 calories of rice have stated), but if you don't eat carbs, you're going to start using the protein in your body as fuel, ultimately burning muscle mass in the process. My parents have been doing the keto diet recently, and my dad says he wants to go to the gym and start working out after he loses a bunch of weight, but that's basically just like showering before you shit (on an unrelated note, he thinks it's a good idea to expend all of his energy doing a 30 minute cardio session before lifting weights, lol). But hey, at least he doesn't have to keep a log of his calories and macros, or think that hard about anything.

Well if you (royal you) know the average amount you eat, and are above the weight you want, then every time you eat anything you would eat some percentage of that. Like if you always eat a whole frozen pizza, eat half of one and stop. Or if you eat a plate full of food, eat 3/4. Or 1/4. Basically just less, but consistently less. This reduces the calories in, without affecting any other variables like calories out or nutrient proportions.

Because you track the weight change over time. If you are at a calorie deficit calculated to lose 1lb/ week, and you only lose 0.5lb, then you simply reduce the calorie target to accommodate that. It doesn't matter if the individual measurements are super accurate, as long as they are recorded consistently you can adapt the target calories based on weight change over time. If you add exercise you will lose more than planned, and can add more calories to stay on track. There will always be short term variations in water retention, physical activity, base metabolic rate etc, but CICO and your weight will on average will change as planned when measured and tailored over weeks/months, and not on how accurately your lunch or treadmill workout was measured.

I can tell you from experience the moment you revert back to bad habits or introduce something that goes way off what's intended, it all goes to shit. Diet is a lifestyle change if you're doing it correctly. On keto, I went from 200lb to 170lb. Once you get past the addiction to carbs (i had intense cravings for bread and spaghetti) and discipline your mind away from it, it becomes your new habit. I haven't had gastrointestinal problems since and my A1C is perfect. But there are plenty of diets out there that seem to work for people. Just make sure you're getting the proper nutrition.

Yea carbs are a real mother fucker. The more refined ones give you a fat dopamine hit obviously, and the fact that they can be converted to energy or stored as fat so easily is what makes us crave them. What's always helped me with my diet is hydration. I just set a timer on my fit bit and every 3 hours I consume 500ml. Helps a lot with satiation, not to mention metabolism. Like 99% of all chemical reactions in the body require an aqueous state (aq) to occur, and helping facilitate that helps a lot. Helps with everything. Helps with energy, helps with skin health (this is a HUGE one), sexual health, muscle recovery... It's not fucking rocket science, drink more water. Get a good stainless steel water bottle and a Britta pitcher if it helps.

As far as the gym goes, its hard to start a habit but its even harder to break one. Force yourself to make it part of your routine and after a few weeks you'll feel unsatisfied if you skip a day.

Intermittent fasting did the most for me, eat enough protein and add some workouts. And my brain just stopped with all the nonsense. Didn't have to diet after that. Just adjusted my lifestyle. But, my body also punishes me a lot harder if I have a drinking night or smash some McDonald's out of convenience. When you're living day to day @ 50% you get use to it. Once you improve that, you're body let's you know when you put posion into it.
