Candlestick holder, grew up in midatlantic area. A candlestick is interchangeable with the word candle, meaning the wax candle itself without the holder. The base is the holder.

Candlestick. Grew up in PA. It's literally a device that "sticks" a candle in place. As a verb, "to stick" means "push a sharp or pointed object into or through." There's often a spike in the bottom of the cupped part that does this, hence the name.

I’m wondering if this in generational since younger people would have grown up with parents who think of candles as something that comes in a jar so they mistakenly think that candles/tapers are called “candlesticks” since they’re stick shaped.

I'm younger- and we know what candles are. Catholics, for instance, just use plain candlesticks during mass. And they're common decor for Thanksgiving and whatnot. All the more likely is people just shortened it for sake of ease. If I said "grab the candlestick" and gestured to that, someone would probably figure it out and grab the candlestick holder.

Tapers aren’t often used in Jewish home observance. Common Shabbat candles, bought in large boxes, [look like this](https://fantasticinc.com/pub/media/catalog/product/cache/afad95d7734d2fa6d0a8ba78597182b7/0/6/06500-3.jpg). They’re cylindrical without much taper, and I think about 3/4 inch in diameter. For years Hanukkah candles came in a standard size and shape [like these](https://www.greenfieldjudaica.com/itemimageslarge/_DSC4547-Edit.JPG). Tapered Hanukkah candles for home use are relatively recent, and still not as tall as what I think of as a wax taper. That doesn’t mean that people are never fancier. Also, a synagogue would often use taller candles that might be tapers.

I guess I've used both - but candlestick holder should technically be wrong. I think people assumed stick style candles should be be called candlesticks - hence candlestick holders. But they are stick style because they fit in a candlestick, not because they look like a stick.
