Disc drives not working with my computer

So I ended up corrupting something when installing a graphics driver and now I need to reinstall Windows XP as no options let me boot into it. I burned a new copy of it to a cd but I kept getting a "retry boot error". I tried both IDE and sata optical drives. So I figured I messed something up and burned another copy. Same deal. Then I put the disc in another computer of the era and it managed to boot it. (Although I couldn't install it as I'm trying to install to a sata drive which worked before on the other machine tho that had actual sata ports, I assume the IDE to Sata adapter I'm using now is 1-way). So I put the CD back in the other machine and changed a bunch of bios settings to no avail. I assume my machine is dying, it's 20 years old and has gotten some pretty heavy use over the years. The sound chip is dead so I wouldn't be surprised if the other stuff is going too.
