They come on automatically after a crash in case the driver is disabled or otherwise unable to activate them so that rescue/first responders can see into the vehicle and see if someone needs help.
Not sure what you're smoking but you clearly misunderstood what kind of safety measure it is.

2. That is still pointless. Even if it did clean the mud, or whatever off the windshield you still won't be able to see inside from the smoke from the airbags. Even if you could you still need to open the vehicle and make sure there isn't anyone in the floor, under the dash, the seat, or in bad wreck the trunk.

I could be wrong here but didn’t they only put airbags on trucks for a couple years? It’s definitely safer without them as you can continue to steer after a collision. I personally haven’t ever driven a truck with airbags and it would be a red flag for me.
It's better to have multiple views into a vehicle. Every angle of light, can be the difference between moving someone and shoving a rod the last few mm into their heart, or not. And no you can't just break the window, if it isn't already.
I, too, had a buddy with 1G Laser.. and it did the same thing when he’d dump it off the line. Also, when he was running his.. around 55-60 mph the passenger side headlight would pop up on it own.. since it didn’t have any of the guts to keep it down during normal operation. That thing was scary fast for what it was, but you didn’t know if it would crank when you jumped in it from day-to-day.
One of my best friends back in HS got a Laser as his first car and it did the same thing! I just figured the stupid amp & ridiculous sub he stuffed in the car had something to do with it, and the fact it was a Plymouth. Still, my Dodge Shadow wasn't much better with it's own electrical gremlins. Good times.
Definitely happens automatically, I booped a tree in the snow at like 5mph in my old Sunfire and they did that, and my hands never left the wheel, not to mention the thousands of car crash clips I've seen where they did the same thing lol

Cops used their cruisers as roadway barriers and they kept their fellow officer, a K-9, in the vehicle that’s acting as a barrier. Would a human officer be sitting in either car in this situation?? Officer on the left could EASILY be chilling roadside with pooch on a leash.
And maybe there’s something procedurally in dispatch that should acknowledge a K-9 officer and that cruiser NOT be assigned to road detouring if the poor police dog paws can’t get handle a brief stint in the cold.
OR just use one cruiser to block the road perpendicularly.

However with context, that doesn't really apply here. Seems the highway was shut down, this truck shouldn't of been there. On top of that, they were simply there to ensure people got off on the exit.
You make it sound like the officers were out of their vehicles due to the danger. But, having seen officers at these roadblocks hundreds of times - they are usually inside their vehicle. Just like the K9. I think it's just good/bad timing. Cops were talking to each other when the trucker came into sight.

Context is a highway with multi-ton vehicles traveling at high rates of speed. Fleeing vehicle or not, no matter the likelihood, as an emergency responder, you prepare with safety and preservation in mind.

Yeesh are you implying that these cops need to be here blocking this road with their cruisers for 8 hours in a day?? As you eluded to, the truck needed to be off the road, and this is a temporary solution while they properly close the road from the on-ramps.
There will ALWAYS be an officer outside signaling. And hey, if an officer wants to sit in his barrier car facing oncoming traffic, more power to Darwin.
Calculated risk and while, by your admission, there shouldn’t have been much risk involved here, I wonder if the officers will calculate that risk differently in the future.
I surely hope this does come up in their safety talks. As per DOT and MTO (Canadian version, as I am Canadian), they require a Crash truck to be present with pylons. This is usually set up to start, but should have the crash truck and pylons to guide traffic set up within 30m.

You could just not have dogs on the force at all but then that would significantly setback a myriad of services Leo uses dogs to assist with like trauma emotional support or search and rescue just to name a couple no decent person can point at and say they shouldn't have and be used for
Building from there, what good is the asset if it stays in a central kennel all day and never gets out and sees their working environment and conditions regularly, if you have a drug dog training is all good and well bit you still need to take the dog out live and make sure they can navigate new/unique situations that you didn't think about training them on back at base
So obviously it just makes sense to have your dogs actually out working if you have them even if it's just finding busy work to keep them sharp. Which means out of the 8 cruisers you might have driving around from your department that day, 1 or 2 may have dogs in them and might be the free unit to deploy when you need a road shut down because your other units are on other calls or on the wrong side of town to be the right unit to dispatch.
It's still tragic for the dog, but it is a legitimate line of duty scenario to have taken place (by that I mean it doesn't appear to be any kind of incompetence that led to the dog being in the car while parked there, there's no reason to bring him out and the officers are paying attention to things that the dogs presence would distract from)
The only real failure maybe, might be flares and signage but even that wouldn't have done shit for this driver if whole trucks on the road with flashing lights didn't get their attention
He should have parked his car on the shoulder a half mile back and busted out a fabric sign that said "warning, stop ahead!". The cops here set themselves up for failure.

I'm pretty sure the guy said something about a 5th of fireball and had someone else that looked just like him steal the truck or something driver stated he couldn't remember the crash therefore it didn't happen.
Most likely doing something on his phone. Sleeping driver wouldn't have held such a straight line, most likely. Drugged up driver almost assuredly wouldn't have held such a straight line. Driver having medical emergency also most likely wouldn't have held such a straight line.
Another classic sign of texting and driving is not braking until the very last second, if at all.
Road blocks are for the most part considered use of "deadly force". To block a road like that with no early warning would require an extreme situation. If no situation is there then the police are often negligent.
If I ever blocked lanes a multiple lane highway. I would use a crap load of flares along with cones to slowly merge traffic to the off-ramp or other lane.

Unlikely. Highway hypnosis usually has you falling asleep. True it is indicated by a general lack of awareness, but a change like this, especially with the flashing lights would draw you out of it pretty easily.

Honestly to me it just looks like plain ole indecision. He didn’t know why the high was closed or if it was fully closed. He didn’t know what was on the exit and was moving too fast to take it. Wasn’t sure if he could apply the brakes or swerve and by the time he processed all this at the speed he was moving, he smashed the car.

Not defending the trucker, but I really have to wonder why cops are so stupid as to park in places that purposely put other people in harm's way. They seem to get a kick out of exercising their power to disrupt and inconvenience people.
Recently I was coming out of a parking lot with only one entry/exit, and a cop had pulled someone over into the first parking space and was writing a ticket. He had parked diagonally across the drive and there were about 4 cars stacked up on the street waiting to turn in and several of us waiting to get out. It was more than "mildly" infuriating.
There was apparently a rolled semi further ahead. I don't get what you guys want first responding cops to do in this situation. It's good they did this because otherwise this driver would have hit the rolled over truck and been way worse off. They parked on top of a crest with lights flashing blocking the road. The truck driver is 100% at fault. He should see hasards like this and had plenty of time to brake.
Just like we are required to do, put out reflective triangles, flares, cones, etc...

Looking at the lines at the side of the lane it looks like he was slowing down, but not expecting to stop - reasonably so on an empty interstate. There is massive lag in the speed indicator so not representative of what is going on.

After reading this and watching the video setting a road block at a hill crest in a vast stretch seems like a terrible idea without staging the police cars further down the road in intervals

Cops do this all the time, but there's usually a lot of other traffic that gets backed up and slows things down naturally. Not so much in central Kansas.
One of the counties here, their highway police units have these light bars that swivel up 4' from the roof and it looks like you're attending a police rave. The county I'm in, just tons and tons of lights on the bar.
Usually it's the state police that like the low profile package in their cruisers... Which is awful when you want to block off the highway and sit in the road for your cuppa tea. ☕ Some more visibility please?

Once saw a truck rear end a pickup on a straightaway south of Dallas going 65.. Last second turned and threw both vehicles into the ditch. They both survived but even if they were on the phone, it's just crazy to think that they drove at least a mile and didn't see both stopped vehicles with hazard lights on.. And the pickup didn't attempt to move before getting hit-- wasn't looking in their rear view mirror...
If you intentionally hit the cop car why pull over afterwards? "Sorry officer that was a really poor decision on my part, I have a broom and a dustbin in the back of my truck, maybe I can help gather the pieces of your car?"

I'm not a fan of KHP or Police with their notoriety of the Kansas 2 step lawsuit BS even though it was outlawed last November. Its still up to citizens to recognize it and tell them NO. (I used to be a fan because my dad was an officer in KS... but this was years ago before the started doing the 2 step BS). Google Kansas 2 step lawsuit to learn more.
