I like the view from the top, so if possible I always go for the front seats on the top deck. I only sit downstairs if I'm on the bus for 1 stop or something. Not that I ride the bus anymore, that's one thing I miss about living in Edinburgh! Their buses were great.

Very rarely travel on buses these days but I would always choose the top deck. It just gives you a view of your home town that can't get any other way. Same thing goes when I fly on a plane. I must, must, must have a window seat. Because how many times in your life do you get to look down and see whole towns and cities, mountains and coastlines from that viewpont? Make the most of it I say.

Have you ever gone "bus surfing"? We did that bavk in college, and occasionally I'll do it with my lil one now. You stand at the top back of the double decker in a surfer stance and try to keep your balance. It's great fun.

Depends on the distance. If I’m not going too far I sit downstairs. When it’s a longer journey I sit upstairs. But that is only for when I’m by myself. When I have my kid with me it’s upstairs all the time so he can sit at the front and pretend to drive the bus.

Non-optional bottom deck for me now, top deck in the past if the trip was longer than about 15 minutes. But it's hardly ever more than 15 minutes, so it'd probably be the bottom deck. Otherwise you'd risk missing your stop, or you'd spend half your time getting up and down the stairs and through the mash of people. Top deck for a proper long trek, like from Trafalgar Square to Bethnal Green, was fantastic. And even if you didn't get the driver's seat you could usually move quickly and get to it when someone else got off.

If I'm carrying shopping, it's bottom deck. On a quiet bus, I use the tip-down priority seats so I can put my bags down comfortably or the rear for the extra floorspace if it's going to be a busy bus. All other times, it's the top deck. If the bus has a bell behind the front seats, then I sit in them (front right is my favourite) else it's the seats immediately behind the stairs. They tend to have more legroom and a bell.

Generally downstairs, just take the first available seat that isn't an elderly/disabled priority seat for the quickest exit when I get to my stop. Last summer I did "treat" myself to sitting upstairs at the front directly above the drivers seat. Felt like a kid again pretending to drive the bus home.

The top deck, in my area anyway, tends to be for younger passengers. So I sit downstairs. In the old days people used to go up to smoke but now it's often just full of kids. I think they go up to get out of view of the driver and other passengers.
