Maybe because once someone flies Spirit the experience is so bad that they never fly that airline again? I know someone who had to learn that lesson the hard way.

You've just described my only experience with them

You may be onto something there, I don't know anyone who's flown with them twice. If your business plan is dependent on first time customers, I guess you can only remain profitable for a limited amount of time.

Spirit will survive just fine.

Their stock is down 65% in the last two days alone because of the denial of the merger, and the company is now at a market cap that is 15% of what it was 2 years ago. They are clearly going to have to go into some sort of survival mode here.

As a pilot for one of the involved airlines ..you're mistaken.

The judge basically said in his ruling report “this one is for you spirit customers” when shooting down the merger in favor of the DOJ. Said basically people are “entitled” to low spirit fares. Well this one’s for you. Spirit can’t operate selling tickets at the prices people expect of them anymore in the Bidenflation economy. Fuel is expensive, paying people to fly, service, throw bags, and board the airplanes is expensive. You aren’t going to make money filling up a 321 for $50 a seat with those passengers bringing trash bags filled with their luggage (I’ve seen it in Ft. Lauderdale, many times) to maybe avoid a $100 bag fee. Add to this their new fleet of NEOs, the most economically efficient narrow body in existence right now, are paper weights thanks to those junk engines. I don’t have a horse in the running, but as an airline pilot I know and feel for what the pilot group is about to endure……but congratulate the judge and the Biden DOJ. He just put a company’s entire workforce soon to be possibly on the street because he won’t let Jetblue merge with them and pushed them down the bankruptcy cliff…all in the name of people being “entitled” to cheap tickets.

If they can’t make a profit on $50 tickets, please explain how Ryan Air / easy jet are profitable?

RealGentleman80@reddit

What is the employee cost at Ryan vs Spirit? Does Ryanair have a fleet where 30% of the planes will be grounded at any given time over the next 2 years?

Seems like they need new leadership then

Yeah I think they were trying that…..

So you think Trumptard would be any better than Biden in this situation. What are you smoking?

Wow, what a clickbait title. The article talks about unrelated stuff for several paragraphs before actually getting around to the point that “Spirit is on the ropes”.

Yeah, that’s why I tried to give a clue in the body text

Eh, that’s not on you, that’s on what passes for “journalism” these days.

Yeah at least the article doesn’t look like it’s written by a 6 year old

No matter how hard UA Airways management tried to scuttle that airline, they could not figure out how to go out of business. There are simply too many invested constituents involved in seeing an airline limp along instead of liquidate. Credit card partners, airplane lessors, engine manufacturers, employees, airports, etc. Pretty much everyone is willing to chip in something to keep the lights on and that's why shitty airlines seem to have nine lives. If Spirit is too big to fail? IDK, but my guess is they will always be an acquisition target even if they can't survive as a stand-alone airline.

Yep. The DOJ "won" this case based on shortsighted arguments with a political learning. They wanted to look like they were protecting a particular segment of the flying population. But in the end, they're potentially completely removing that player from the market.
